Speechless. It doesn’t happen very often that I am speechless. There’s always something on my mind that manages to make its way out of my mouth, on this page or into a Facebook post. This is one of those times. After attending my godchild’s graduation ceremony held at the Rosemont Theater last month, the idea for this column was born but I put it on the back burner hoping for something more inspirational to come to mind.

If you’re expecting the next few paragraphs to be pearls of wisdom instilled in me by my Rosary College mentors; inspired by the world’s greatest and most profound poets and essayists; comingled with my own life experience and sentiments about commencement; or just a robust “hitch your wagon to a star” message to the Class of 2018, you’re about to be greatly disappointed. If you graduated with honors, you should be quite proud. If you got the most applause and whistles at your graduation ceremony because your friends and family were thrilled that you even made it to graduation, you should be ecstatic because there were probably more than a few days when it looked like a diploma was out of your reach. But here’s the rub: at the end of any given day, it doesn’t matter how many cords you have on your gown, how many sashes, stoles, hoods or doctoral velvet tams you can stockpile—in my opinion (maybe because I don’t have a velvet tam), it’s about a simple Proverb: A handful of common sense is worth a bushel of learning.

As I attempted to exit the Rosemont Theater parking lot after the graduation ceremony, all I kept thinking to myself was, “I hope the kids that graduated have more common sense than their parents!” Some people walked aimlessly in the street in front of moving cars, police frantically waved their orange wands but when mom and dad, driving expensive SUVs, aren’t paying any attention then the flow of traffic grinds to a halt and folks who were forced to park in the parking garage languished there for well over an hour. What?

Someone wrote, “It is a thousand times better to have common sense without education than to have education without common sense.” I’ll drink to that. On the news, at your jobs, out with friends, anywhere in the world you’ll find a big void where common sense should be. During a heat wave, do we need to be told not to leave our children and pets in the car? Is storm chasing something that should be commended? Why is it a law that we have to stop for pedestrians now—too hard to look both ways? Who are these people who don’t wash their hands? Do you truly believe that money can buy happiness? Does having a Ph.D. make you smarter than an uneducated grandmother with a lifetime of experience? Does refusing to ask for help when you need it really build your character? You can’t talk on your cell phone and ride your bike at the same time. You can’t drink and drive. Hello, don’t expect rewards for doing what’s right because that’s what you should be doing.

It’s not rocket science. And it is actually cheaper than a degree in rocket science. Use your brains to be mindful, compassionate and practical. Of course, I always advocate hitching your wagon to a star—just be careful and watch the speed limit.

Mrs. Northica Hillery-Stone passed away on her late husband’s birthday, May 16, 2018 and a celebration of her life is set for June 2 at Second Baptist Church in Maywood.

Mrs. Stone was featured on the cover of the January 2008 issue of Neighbors Magazine, long before today’s flourishing circulation so we proudly reprint her story as our tribute to her truly unselfish life.

he has worn many hats in her life. Dedicated social worker. Inspired choir director and soloist. Survivor of the loss of her husband and a child—prevailing to answer a call, to take on a mission. Her crowning glory, perhaps, is a fusion of each of her passionate undertakings, woven together—a colorful pattern, literally knitted together with the threads of American, local and family histories and individual successes. She is Northica Stone, President and CEO of Operation UpLift and the West Town Museum of Cultural History, located at 104 S. 5th Avenue in Maywood. Recognized by U.S. Presidents and bequeathed the possessions and legacies of some of Maywood’s and this country’s most notable citizens, Mrs. Stone is the keeper of dreams. And for all the citations, she is still an unsung caretaker of connections of human experience.

Northica and George Stone shared Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream. George especially dared to follow in King’s footsteps.

He sought out community leaders, members of private industry and clergy members—two of them, Rev. Sykes and Rev. second floor. “People have lost sight of the fact that Dr. Julian ever lived here,” Stone insists. “It is significant to the image of our community to remind people that success stories like Dr. Julian, with international status, have lived here among us.” Stone has many favorites among the thousands of items collected, but two remain a focal point. “Colonel William T. Nichols, who with the Maywood Development Corporation, founded Maywood in 1869. A senator, state representative and white soldier from Vermont who served in the Civil War, he is best known for surviving the wreck of the SS Republic, a ship that has since been pulled from the ocean floor and yielding a treasure trove of coins. And then there is the Hurst family, the first black family to make their home in Maywood. “The Hursts still have a descendant living in Maywood,” Stone says with pride.

“The paradox of these two families, the beginnings of our community are the first things I see at the beginning of every day.” At the end of each day, Stone remains convinced that, with her curator, Jeri Stenson, a void in the community is being filled. “I feel at this point in my life that it is my mission to pursue this cause but I hope and pray that I can influence somebody else to follow in my footsteps. Dr. King was undoubtedly the impetus to the group that founded UpLift. So many things took place because of him. That’s why we have been celebrating him and what he was about for the past 20 years.”

Museum hours are limited but one historical site is open to the public every day of the year. At the McDonald’s at 1st and Lake Street, a monument to the Underground Railroad marks the exact location of a “Ten Mile Freedom House.” Big Macs and milk shakes now make their home where black slaves once

secretly took shelter. The public is invited to appreciate this Museum “annex” and also view Museum artifacts prominently displayed in a glass case inside the McDonald’s.

Northica Stone is relentless in her pursuit of excellence, in her allegiance to her husband’s dream, in her adherence to Dr. King’s dream. As Thoreau wrote, “most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” Not Stone. This choir director and Second Baptist soloist continues to sing the praises of the past and pray for a harmonious future. “When we’re gone, all of this— our history, genealogy, our impact—will be lost unless it is preserved. For nearly 20 years, Northica Stone, Laurietta “Jeri” Stenson and the West Town Museum of Cultural History Board labored to let the world know that Dr. Percy and Mrs. Julian lived in Maywood during the most accomplished 15 years of their lives. Mrs. Stone wrote to the U.S. Postal Service after the release of the 29¢ Dr. Percy Lavon Julian postage stamp was released; she wrote to the Chicago Tribune; petitions were circulated to rename Proviso Academy or Washington School but all efforts were unsuccessful. Finally, after many attempts and numerous property owners, on September 17, 2010, the corner of 14th and Oak in Maywood, which should have been packed with students from local grade schools, high schools and colleges, and people of all ages, was renamed Honorary Percy Lavon Julian Family Way. Dr. Julian’s daughter, Faith, spoke to the modest crowd, of her mother’s cultural achievements and her father’s more than 100 life-saving patents.
