We are not here merely to make a living. We are here to enrich the world with a finer spirit of hope and achievement— and we impoverish ourselves if we forget the errand.

Woodrow Wilson
Class of 2021. I’ve never been asked to give a commencement address. Clearly, I’m not famous enough to warrant an invitation; as a result, a class of graduating seniors, perched and anxiously waiting for some words of wisdom to spew out of my mouth might be predictably disappointed. My notoriety is confined to this magazine’s circulation area and sometimes my comments have no filter: two more reasons that an invitation may never come and that’s fine with me. Despite lacking the qualifications of a memorable keynote speaker, there are some thoughts I would like to share this graduation season. First and foremost, with all due respect to the actual kindergarten, grade school, high school and college graduates who comprise the legitimate Class of 2021, this shout out is for all of us— every single one of us who has persevered during this past pandemic year. It’s our graduation, too. We’ve earned the right to celebrate what we’ve accomplished and use what we’ve learned to forge ahead. Every college and university has within it different schools (majors) from which students can pursue their passions. Throughout this crisis, without entering a classroom, most of us have double majored and graduated with high honors. Humanities. Surely, there are subjects to be learned from tenured professors but there’s nothing like a pandemic to separate the selfish from the selfless. I have been privileged to witness, write about and even help people who checked on neighbors, cooked and gave away hundreds of dollars worth of food to strangers, donated lunches for first responders, put themselves at risk in hospitals and nursing homes—not for the money but because they were called to a higher purpose in this life. You, my friends, have rightfully earned a degree in Humanity because, in the face of the ultimate storm, you remained calm and gave hope to those who needed it most. Economics. I can hardly manage the solar-powered calculator on my desk but I witnessed first-hand, the devastating toll the pandemic took on businesses, particularly food service, floundering month after month to survive the crippling regulations that eventually wiped out thousands of establishments across the nation. I salute those who fought tooth and nail to keep their doors open, reinventing the wheel at every turn, surviving on to-go orders, creating websites and QR codes and taking on challenges they never anticipated in their wildest entrepreneurial dreams. You, my friends, deserve a degree in economics for prevailing and remaining the backbone of our communities. Child Studies. Buying school clothes, making lunches, volunteering and coaching at school is one thing but parents who were once waving goodbye at the bus stop on their way to work were catapulted into a stressful twilight zone of e-learning, homeschooling and motivating isolated and often depressed kids who were deprived of the socialization that is as important as classroom studies. You, my friends, deserve the degree in early childhood education. I honestly don’t remember any commencement speeches. But I will never forget the Candle and Rose Ceremony at Dominican University. Seniors and underclassmen exchange a rose—a symbol of beauty, love and compassion (Caritas); the candle symbolizes the light of knowledge, the light of Veritas (truth). A tradition since 1928, I was proud to participate twice. We don’t always remember what we learned in the classroom or who spoke at our graduation ceremonies but even non-Dominican grads can embrace the ideals of love and truth as we move forward out of the ravages of the pandemic and go mask-free into the future, using the past year’s experiences to “enrich the world.”

YARD SALE EXTRAVAGANZA Shop the fundraiser: June 3, 4 and 5
Madison Street’s longest-running restaurant is now in its 44th year of making heavenly sandwiches, gourmet soups and a full line of catering items for your next event, meeting or party.
The Westchester Food Pantry’s Yard Sale Extravaganza is a huge fundraiser for the Pantry which works to end hunger in Bellwood, Berkeley, Broadview, Hillside, Hines, La Grange Park, Western Springs and Westchester. Thanks to a tremendous surge in donations, there is more merchandise than tables, so new items will be put out often throughout the three-day sale: Thursday, June 3, 8am-3pm Friday, June 4, 8am-3pm Saturday, June 5, 8am-12pm ($5/bag sale Saturday only) The sale is generously hosted by the Westchester Community Church, 1840 Westchester Blvd. This event has many volunteer opportunities: setting up the sale, working at the sale and cleaning up when it's all done. For more information on volunteering at the sale or at the pantry, visit www.westchesterfoodpantry.org.

Glena Temple, president of Viterbo University and a veteran of higher education leadership as well as a scholar in botany and plant sciences, has been named Dominican University’s 11th president. She will take office on August 2, succeeding Donna M. Carroll, who has served as president since 1994 and led the institution through nearly three decades of extraordinary growth to becoming a U.S. News & World Report Top 10 regional university. “The Board is thrilled to welcome Glena Temple as Dominican’s next president,” said Tom Abrahamson, board chair and member of the search committee. “The search process brought forward a diverse field of extremely accomplished candidates. Dr. Temple brings with her an exemplary record of achievement and leadership at multiple levels of higher education and a keen awareness of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Dominican.” Temple s ays she was not looking to leave Viterbo, where she has served in multiple faculty and administrative leadership roles since 2001, but felt drawn to Dominican’s mission, its record of advancing social mobility and student success, and its commitment to equity and inclusion. “I am truly humbled and grateful for the trust placed in me by the Dominican Board of Trustees and search committee,” Temple said. “Dominican’s justice-driven mission and values deeply rooted in the charism of the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters spoke to my heart and strengthened my desire to be a part of this amazing university.” Temple began her career at Viterbo, a Catholic Franciscan university in La Crosse, Wisconsin, in 2001 as a member of the biology faculty. In 2017, Temple became Viterbo’s ninth president. During her four-year tenure, Viterbo increased its retention, graduation and job placement rates for students. The university’s endowment grew from $43 mil lion to more than $60 million, and it expanded graduate enrollment, while adding programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. “The Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters join in congratulating Dr. Glena Temple as the next president of Dominican University,” said Sister Colleen Settles, corporate chair of Sinsinawa Dominican sponsored institutions. Dominican University is located at 7900 W. Division in River Forest. For more information about Glena Temple, Univer sity programs and events, visit www.dom.edu.

MEMORIALIZING A LOVED ONE During these difficult times
Among the many struggles since the start of the pandemic are finding ways to grieve and honor a loved one who has died. The missed opportunity for a traditional funeral or memorial service has left some at a loss for how to honor their loved one's life and start their grief journey. Even if you are unable to hold a traditional service, there are still ways for families to remember a loved one and find support during this stressful and emotional time. Consider these ideas from Remembering a Life, an online resource from the experts at the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA). hold a small service now. Restrictions have eased in many areas and families may be able to have small services in a funeral home, a place of worship, at a cemetery or another meaningful location. A funeral director can provide guidance on what is permissible. consider Going virtual. With almost half of NFDA-member funeral homes offering livestreaming options since the onset of COVID-19, this option provides family and loved ones the opportunity to attend services and gives out-of-town family and friends who may be concerned about travel the chance to participate. host a Private service with a memorial service at a later date. Since the onset of the pandemic, many families have opted to postpone a loved one's service. A funeral or memorial service, regardless of when it is held, offers the opportunity to gather, support one another, share memories and say goodbye. While immediate family members may have been able to gather for a service and other family and friends could participate virtually, there are often many friends and family members who would appreciate being part of an inperson service to pay tribute to a loved one who died. No matter the circumstances around a death, funeral directors can help family and friends find ways to memorialize their loved ones in meaningful ways. Find support and resources for planning a funeral during the pandemic, including a free printable guide for planning a service in the future, at RememberingALife.com. Novena to st. jude
O Holy St. Jude, Apostle, Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need to you, I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Mary’s and three Glorias. Publication must be promised. St. Jude pray for us and all who invoke your aid. Amen. This Novena has never known to fail. I have had my request granted. p.z.
