Click here. I check my email diligently. While I learned a long time ago to disable the alerts on my phone every time a new email comes in (talk about annoying), I can tell by the number of notifi f cations that shows on the app that it’s time to take a look if I’m not perched at my desk. Rarely have I gone an entire day without hearing “you’ve got mail” but it happened recently and it was time to do something I have put off f fo f r too long: unsubscribe. Like everything else in life f , there’s an easy way and a hard way. Most of us probably just mark r the boxes next to the junk emails and delete because it’s fa f st and let’s you get to the substantive emails quickly. Anytime an occasion rolls around like graduation season or Father’s Day, the mailbox fi f lls up f ster than my gas tank at $5.93 a gallon. Groupons I’ve never signed up fo fa f r, public relations agencies in other states and countries, special off ffers, “this is your invitation,” “save 30%,” “you’re running out of time,” “today’s deals fo f r you,” “open fo f r a perk r ,” “our lowest prices of the season” emails abound. I have to give them credit fo f r trying but, aft f er reading emails since the mid-1990s, the pool of catchy opening lines has run dry. Aft f er tallying up nearly 300 emails, I did the most boring, time-consuming thing I could think of and started to open up the junk, scroll to the very bottom tiny print and remove myself fr f om the mailing list. Unsubscribe over and over again. The whole time I was purging the list I was thinking that it might not even help but I was intent on doing it anyway fo f r my own peace of mind. I’m an editor with a fu f riously fa f st red pen—and the daughter of a declutterer. It was inevitable. I oft f en said to my mom when we watched our fa f vorite PBS program “Antiques Roadshow” that we didn’t have any hidden treasures in our home. We W pretty much had a one-year rule, if anything. Not worn, not used, didn’t fi f t, gotta go. We W didn’t have any toys that my great-grandfa f ther played with, no Picasso paintings picked up at a garage sale, no Chinese cups or vintage baseball cards or Navaj a o blankets. Whatever we did have we sold in the garage sale to make some extra money. In fa f ct, there were times I sold things we actually needed. It’s diff fficult fo f r some people to let go of things. I get that. But sometimes clutter smothers. Donating, repurposing actually helps others and provides peace of mind. Thinking about the W stchester Food Pantry’s June Ya We Y rd Sale Extravaganza and our fr f iends at St. Paul Resale Shop in Melrose Park r , I commend those people who take the time to eliminate life f ’s excess and fo f cus on the essentials, while giving someone else the opportunity to fi f nd something gently-used and usefu f l. The only thing that distinguishes a new fr f om a previously-owned baseball glove or gardening tool or camping supplies is probably the cost. I certainly didn’t solve any of the world’s problems by unsubscribing fr f om hundreds of junk emails but it fe f lt good to get rid of that little bit of baggage. Sometimes we can’t tackle everything that weighs us down but I saw something recently by Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle that’s worth sharing: “Can’t clean up the whole room? Clean a corner of it. Can’t do all the dishes? Do a dish. Can’t get in the shower? Wa W sh your fa f ce. Always look fo f r the thing you CAN do, with the energy and fo f cus you DO have. Little wins pave the way fo f r bigger wins. 1% beats O%.” So to the hoarders, the work r ing moms, the Class of 2022, to the dads with garages and sheds fu f ll of stuff f —anyone—this is fo f r you. Little wins pave the way, neighbors.

ranger’s-eye view of the Pa P nama invasion at italian american ve v terans museum Former Army Ranger Salvatore “Sammy” DiTusa will offer a boots-on-the-ground view of the U.S invasion of Panama at a 3 pm presentation on June 5 at the Italian American Veterans Museum in Stone Park. On Dec. 17, 1989, President George H. W. Bush gave “Operation Just Cause” the green light, setting the invasion in motion. The goal was to capture Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega and restore democracy. A scant three days later,r the lead element of the invasion parachuted into the Panamanian sky at 1 a.m., in the U.S. military’s first combat night jump since World War II. Among those parachuting in was Specialist DiTusa, a member of the U.S. Army’s 2/75 Rangers. In those pre-dawn hours, the Rangers and several other elite military units knocked out radar installations, secured several critical objects and paved the way for the almost 26,000 U.S. troops to follow. On June 5, DiTusa will offer a blow-by-blow account of a dictatorship’s end. The Italian American Veterans Museum is located on the third floor of the Office Center at Casa Italia, 3800 Division St., Stone Park. The museum will be open at 2 p.m., with light refreshments served. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Seating is limited, and reservations are a must. Call 708-338-0690 and leave your name, phone number and the number of people in your party. celebrate soloists as the symphony of oak Pa P rk and river Forest concludes its 90th season The Symphony of Oak Park & River Forest concludes its 90th season with a concert featuring three soloists on Sunday, y June 5, at 4 pm in the Chapel of Concordia University in River Forest. TRITON HONORS Newest Grads

Held at the Rosemont Theatre on May 14, 439 graduates walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. Triton administrators, including Triton College President Mary-Rita Moore and Dr.r Susan Campos, vice president of Academic Affairs, gave speeches along with Diane Viverito, vice chairwoman of the Triton College Board of Trustees. Those in the audience were moved by the recognition of all graduating veterans by Dr.r Jodi Ko K slow Martin, vice president of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. The program also consisted of a reflection by Triton College Student Association President Jasmin Garcia, as well as a video presentation highlighting several students and their accomplishments throughout the school year.r Nakea Blount of Bellwood was feeling “ecstatic” to be graduating from Triton College. Blount explained that she chose to attend Triton College because she felt like it was convenient and close to home. She said she felt inspired to attend Triton because her mother had attended Triton. Northlake resident Manuel Ruiz said graduating felt “really exciting.” “I was a member of the high school class of 2020, and we didn’t get to have a graduation,” he said. “This feels really special to actually be able to graduate today. The best part about Triton are the teachers and how they are always available. My professors were able to guide us down a good path. I really enjoyed my time at Triton.” Ruiz plans on going into construction management.

FILING FINANCIAL AID DOCS ONLINE New program now o activ ive

Triton College now allows students to complete their financial aid documents online using “Logic Student Forms.” The new program became active on May 2. “Thanks to ‘Logic Student Forms,’ students can complete their financial aid documents without having to come into our office,” said Outreach Coordinator Mariana Hernandez. “It’s a virtual submission option allowing students to complete their forms and view the process as it happens.” After Triton students complete their FAFSA or “Alternative Application,” they must then sign in to triton.studentforms.com to see if any further documents are needed. After they complete all required forms, they are finished with their financial aid submission for the upcoming academic year.r This program removes common issues we’ve encountered before such as being unable to read handwriting and lost papers,” she said. “It allows for very easy access and students can use it simply by following step by step.” For more information, contact marianahernandez@triton.edu or (708) 456-0300, Ext. 3468.
