I give up. Well, not entirely. But, if we’re talking about Lent, it’s true: I didn’t give up anything. What’s the point of giving up one thing only to overindulge in something else for 40 days? Then just revert back to old habits right after Easter. It makes no sense. If, in fact, I did give up sarcasm, slots, sub sandwiches, hot fudge and an occasional swear word, would this lame sacrifice really pave the way to heaven? I don’t think so. For more than half a century, I’ve been getting ashes rubbed on my forehead, fearfully contemplating the “dust to dust” symbolism each and every time. I don’t want to be dust. And, if I keep eating from all the restaurants in Neighbors magazine, I’ll be a lot of dust. But leave it to our veteran priest Fr. August Feccia—a favorite, funny and very wise man of the cloth—who offered a homily of exceptional analogies as Lent began. To be the best pilot, he said, you have to work at it, keep your navigation skills and recall of emergency procedures as sharp as they can be; to be the best doctor, you must constantly learn ever-changing treatments and medicines; to be the best married couple, you may have to work even harder than pilots and doctors, listening, sharing, caring unconditionally. Lent, then, is a simple reminder to the best, worthiest person we can be while we walk on earth—even if you insist on giving up candy or coffee. For many of us, sacrifice happens on a daily basis. We sacrifice the bulk of our paychecks and pensions, our free time and our sleeptime, even our sanity for a greater good—for our children, parents, friends and people we love. But, like Jell-O, there’s always room for more sacrifice—as noted in our special section on page 8, “Do a little good today. Do a little more tomorrow.” I saw for myself how much more I could sacrifice when I set my alarm for 6 am to get to the early Sunday Mass. I looked around at the handful of people in church on a cold and windy day: three young boys with bed-head, older folks with canes, neighbors who walked over and I thought to myself, “They could’ve stayed in bed but they made a real sacrifice to be here.” I saw for myself how much more I could sacrifice when I drafted the story about the American Legion Post #974 Stand Down event for homeless veterans—men and women coming together, chopping vegetables, organizing coats and blankets, preparing to welcome and comfort veterans who served our country, willing to give up their lives, who now have to be grateful for hot homemade soup, a pulled pork sandwich and the chance to talk to someone who will truly listen. I realized I could do so much more when I saw that Misericordia is in desperate need of willing people to stand on local corners for just a few hours passing out jelly beans to help children and adults with developmental disabilities experience more compassionate and purposeful lives. I realized I could do more when it comes to preserving fragile traditions like the St. Joseph Table, close to my own Italian-American Catholic heart. Yes, we are all busy, we’re all worn thin when it comes to time, money and stamina but as another old Irish blessing goes: May there always be work for your hands to do, May your purse always hold a coin or two. There’s always a little more we can do for others who need our assistance. You can count on Neighbors magazine to show the way when you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and pitch in.

While these events are called a “Stand Down,” Post #974 stood up for hundreds of homeless veterans It’s a labor of love that began in the kitchen and sprawled into the massive hall at Franklin Park American Legion Post #974, home to a hugely successful Stand Down event that welcomed over

100 veterans in need on January 14. Stand Down events are held across the country, providing food, clothing, VA counseling and referral services to homeless and struggling veterans.

Legion and Auxiliary members got back up from Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops, church groups, local businesses, community members as well as township and village support together with the Illinois Department of VA Services, Veterans Assistance Commission of Cook County, Forest Park Vet Center, Inner Voice Chicago and the Edward Hines VA Food Pantry. “With everyone’s help, we were able to serve these patriotic Americans a hot meal of soup, salad, pulled pork, chicken, side dishes and dessert and every person received a bag filled with toiletries, fruit and cookies,” explained Auxiliary member Cathy Zito. “Each veteran was able to browse through tables filled with coats, clothing, blankets, shoes, gloves, mittens, hats and scarves and take whatever they needed. Together, we can do so much to thank and help our veterans.” According to the Veterans Administration, other Stand Down events will be held in the Chicago area on May 19 and June 8-9. Blue Star Ceremony

TheAmerican LegionAuxiliary Unit 974, based at American Legion Post 974 at 9757 W. PacificAvenue in Franklin Park, will host a Blue Star Banner Ceremony on Sunday, March 18 starting at 2 pm. The Blue Star Flag first appeared in 1917 when anArmy Captain who had two sons serving on the front line designed it as a tribute to their dedication and service. Today, families who have a loved one serving in the military still display a Blue Star Flag inside the front window of their homes to show the family’s pride in their loved one and to remind others that preservingAmerica’s freedomdemands much sacrifice. Kiwanis Bowling Event for disabled children

The Kiwanis Clubs of Division 6 will host an indoor bowling fundraiser on Sunday, April 15th at Circle Lanes located at 7233 Circle Avenue in Forest Park from1 to 3 pm. All funds raised fromthis event will benefit the Kiwanis Neuroscience Research Foundation, enabling children with disabilities to enjoy outdoor activities such as swimming, boating, gardening and playing on playground equipment adapted to their needs at YMCA Camp Duncan near Volo, Illinois. Kiwanis members bowl, sponsor other bowlers, donate raffle prizes and help at the event. Everyone is invited to attend. Tickets are $20 per bowler and $15 for non-bowlers. Leyden Eagles Hockey Club beats Lake Zurich for title

In January, the Leyden Eagles Hockey Club took part in the Big Bear Polar Vortex hockey tournament held in Madison, Wisconsin. The Eagles played 4 games, winning three, tied one game, scoring 15 goals and only gave up five goals to the opposition teams. The Eagles, pictured above, won championship game 5-2 over the Bears from Lake Zurich, Illinois. The local group had outstanding goaltending from freshman Adam Johnson and senior Mikey Pasterz. Solid defense from Adam Brimie and Mason Perri limited opponent's scoring chances. Offense was sparked by series MVP/Freshman Joe Gulino. Maywood native Regina Thomas Dillard publishes wellness cookbook featuring over 150 simple, healthy recipes for busy lifestyles

First reported by Michael Romain in the Village Free Press, Maywood native Regina Thomas Dillard has published a wellness cookbook entitled FEED: Living Food Recipes to be Made and Eaten with Love. Dillard, the founder of Inner Sanctum Wellness, a health and wellness company, said she wrote the book so she could demonstrate how food can be used to heal bodies from sickness and disease, particularly since she once healed herself by integrating living food into her diet. FEED features more than 154 recipes, including her favorite—a buckwheat and flaxseed bread. Copies of FEED are $14.99 for softcover and $9.99 for an ebook and can be purchased at the Oak Park Visitors Center, 1010 Lake Street, Sugar Beet Food Co-Op at 812 Madison in Oak Park or online at Amazon.com.

Throughout the competition, the work of talented students throughout the area in seven different categories including drawing, painting, photography, mixed media, design, sculpture and ceramics was displayed in the Triton College Art Gallery. West Leyden junior Bart Saminski (pictured above) was awarded Best in Show for his photo entitled “Interior,” which featured a black and white image of his mother and grandmother. Top prize winners in other categories included: Elena Buenrostro and Nyah Peaches from Proviso Math and Science Academy; Shakty Granados from West Leyden High School; J.C. Abueva from Guerin College Prep; Aalia Galati and Karolina Kedzior from Ridgewood High School. Artwork was judged by Triton faculty members.

Triton Health Careers Campus Visit Day The Wednesday, March 7th Campus Visit Day is a great opportunity for current and future students to learn more about the many health career programs offered at Triton College in River Grove. Special Saturday Performance/Pancake Breakfast Performing exciting shows since 1972, the Triton Troupers Circus has announced the schedule for its 2018 performances at Triton College: Thursday, March 22, 7 pm; Friday, March 23, 7 pm; and Saturday, March 24, 1 pm and 7 pm. The 1 pm Saturday show is interpreted for the hearing impaired. Performances are approximately two hours, including an intermission. Drinks and snacks are available for purchase. Memorial Park District presents “HIKE FOR IKE” and Eisenhower Park Ribbon Cutting Memorial Park District is inviting everyone to come out and help support the local park in your neighborhood by walking along the newly-renovated sports campus memory “ribbon” trail on Saturday, April 7. Registration for the walking event begins at 10 am sharp, immediately after the ribbon cutting ceremony to rededicate the multigenerational recreational campus at Eisenhower Park, 700 Speechley Boulevard in Hillside. The campus features sports courts (tennis, basketball and volleyball) as well as state-of-the-art field lighting, inclusive play for therapeutic recreation and the existing football, soccer and baseball fields. Area residents are invited to come out and be part of the campaign by joining the walk called “HIKE FOR IKE.” Participants are asked to raise pledges or donate $50. Pledge $75 and receive a 4”x 8” memory brick; pledge $100 or more and receive a 12”x12” memory brick at Eisenhower campus. Each participant will receive a t-shirt, refreshments and prizes. Collection jars for smaller donations will be available on the day of the event and park staff will be manning computers for anyone who wants to buy a brick “on the spot.” Individual and corporate sponsorships are also available.
