A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.

Washington Irving

No manual. Can you just imagine some of the things you’ve purchased over the years coming

without an instruction manual? Long before Google, Siri and YouTube videos, any significant project came with a booklet or a piece of paper that unfolded into a giant map of parts included, diagrams with arrows, the step-by-step process and tools required to get the job done right. When I followed the directions, I managed to do an okay job of putting together bookcases, LEGOs, exercise equipment, bed frames and desks, installing software, ceiling fans and mini-blinds and even hooking up antiquated cable boxes and VCRs. But when I was a know-it-all and executed the “how hard could this possibly be” mentality, there were inevitably parts leftover, wobbling, error messages and creaking noises as a result of my arrogance. Maybe that’s one reason I never became a mother and that I have immeasurable admiration for some of the most exceptional mothers I have known in my life—including my own. There’s no manual. When they wheel you out of the hospital with your balloons, the baby gets a ski hat and a swaddle blanket. Moms get a wave goodbye from the staff. No manual. Getting pregnant and having babies is one thing; in fact, now it’s actually a profitable endeavor—the more kids, the more free government assistance. But the best mothers, even adoptive mothers, seem to navigate their way simply by instinct, with unconditional love and a complete willingness to make a lifetime of sacrifices. Yes, the world is full of amazing moms but my guess is that the numbers have dwindled. The days of the mom who never sat down at the table for dinner to be sure everyone else had enough to eat are long gone. The best moms that I’ve known weren’t afraid to say no to their kids; they were well aware that discipline and child abuse are two distinctly different things and that time-outs are a total waste of time; that manners and hygiene were as important as homework and prayers; that one stern look could stop a child’s misstep in its tracks; that white bread, bologna and Twinkies weren’t a death sentence; that curfews, eating what was on your plate and detentions built character and didn’t require behavioral therapy. When I was in grade school, it was easy to spot the classmates who suffered because their moms weren’t willing or able to make the simplest sacrifices of a washed face, combed hair and clean clothes. We were the lucky ones whose moms were in the kitchen for hot lunch day, never missed parent-teacher conferences and were in the bleachers cheering at every game. Today’s headlines are riddled with violence and crime, teens roaming the streets at 3 am carrying guns. These stories never end well and the whole story is never really told. A neighbor will say he was a good boy, a friend will say he was an honor student and relatives will be screaming with grief after a tragic death. Sadly, someone failed these victims along the way and, very often, their wayward lives lacked a loving, attentive home. As Emerson once wrote, “Men are what their mothers made them.” I’m one of the lucky ones. Yes, I caught a crack when I had a smart mouth; I did chores every week that I dreaded; I taught myself to type in 8th grade so I could work; I gave up fun times for family meals. Big deal. In exchange for boundaries and responsibilities and loyalty, I got one of the best moms God ever gave the world. For the second year in a row, the pandemic prohibits us from being together but, like scores of blessed children around the world, I echo the words of Abraham to her under my breath: “All that I am, or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” Happy Mother’s Day, neighbors.

Meat King

Opens In Melrose

NINO AND SILVANA FASO FILL A BIG VOID Nino, who grew up in Schiller Park, and Silvana who is from Melrose Park, both knew there really wasn’t any place nearby where people could get fresh, quality beef, pork and chicken so they opened Meat King, 1710 W. Lake in Melrose Park. Open seven days a week, choice products from filets to taco meat, chicken wings to Italian sausage are now available. Call 708/223-4650 for info.

The toll that COVID-19 and state-mandated lockdowns placed on Illinois businesses has been staggering. According to statistics, more than 35% of small businesses were forced to close, leaving approximately half a million Illinois residents out of a job. Robert Steiner, district director for the Illinois office of the U.S. Small Business Administration, told TheCenterSquare.com reporter Kevin Bessler, “All these small businesses, they are not just businesses,” he said. “They are the focal centers for their communities and provide jobs for their communities and really drive things in our economy.” Despite losing their jobs and low morale, many people are taking a risk and turning their passions into profits, becoming entrepreneurs, utilizing vacant retail and commercial space and, at the same time, giving communities what they need and want. Nino and Silvana Faso are among several entrepreneurs celebrating grand openings last month. The couple, pictured above to the left of Melrose Park Mayor Ron Serpico, opened Meat King, 1710 W. Lake Street, giving area struggling residents exactly what they needed: fresh, choice meats at wholesale prices. “When my husband lived in Italy for five years and cared for his grandpa’s farm, he became even more aware of how healthy and essential it really is to eat the freshest products available. We’re excited to open Meat King and give our suburban neighbors something we know they’ll love,” said Silvana.

Celebrating a grand opening and grand re-openings in Oak Park, Elmwood Park & Forest Park last month JOE FARINA

Victory oak Park

Though the pandemic has pummeled the restaurant industry, chef Joe Farina shines through like the impeccable flavors of the Italian classics, signature dishes, steaks and seafood that he has been serving Chicago area diners for decades. Victory Italian, which opened at 100 S. Marion in Oak Park, is appropriately named—it’s the latest establishment from the Victory Restaurant Group founded by Farina and Anthony Gambino.

Joining Victory Meat and Seafood in Elmhurst and Victory Tap and Doc’s Victory Tap in Chicago, Victory Oak Park is exactly what people have been hankering for: comfort food in the form of handmade pastas, his award-winning “Mama’s Meatballs,” “Nanna’s Gravy,” a glass of wine paired with a socially-responsible patio as well as indoor dining, carryout and delivery. Farina not only rolled out a welcome mat to hungry customers but recently held a career fair to hire more employees at all of his loca tions. Call 708-434-5766 for more information.

CONSTANCE CONTURSI

Hit It! Fitness: Better than ever in elmwood Park

Constance Contursi, the trainer/founder of Hit It! Fitness, which offers bootcamps for kids, teens and adults, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), weight training, personal training and nutrition counseling had been improving the quality of life for countless clients for nearly a decade until the neighbors of her Oak Park studio began calling the police for alleged noise violations. An unsuccessful mediation through the Village of Oak Park hit her harder than any kickboxing session. “One chapter closed, another opened,” said Contursi (pictured at far left with her trainers) as she made the tough decision to move her studio to 7730 W. North Avenue in Elmwood Park. Warmly welcomed by Mayor Skip Saviano and Cook County Commissioner Pete Silvestri, the Grand Corridor Chamber of Commerce was thrilled to cut its first ribbon in over a year. For more information, visit www.hititfit.com or call 708-506-1614.

BROWN COW

A Sweet Success Story

The Brown Cow Ice Cream Parlor (BC), 7347 Madison in Forest Park, founded and owned by Connie Brown since 2004, was a lick away from total disaster when the outside company she worked with to manufacture her homemade recipes closed its doors without notice. The single mom pivoted to keep her business “relevant and vibrant” during the pandemic, including a walk-up window and online birthday parties, but

without $50,000 toward the purchase of in-house creamery equipment, the party would be over for BC. Ice cream lovers rallied and flooded Brown’s GoFundMe page with donations; eight months later, her factory got the thumbs up from the health department. On April 17, Brown and her staff cut the ribbon at a grand re-opening and the doors are now open 11 am to 11 pm everyday throughout the summer. To stay updated on events, offers and share photos/stories, follow the new Brown Cow Community Group Facebook page. Call 366- 7970 for more info.

EUGENE GIUDICE

receives law librarian Award

Eugene Giudice, a native of Melrose Park, was awarded the Advocate of the Year Award by the Private Law Librarians and Information Professionals Special Interest Section (PLLIP-SIS) of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL). This award is presented annually to a librarian who demonstrates leadership and excellence in advocating for law libraries and law librarians. Eugene was nominated by Jim Senter, formerly a law librarian with the Jones Day law firm in their Los Angeles office. Jim had high praise for Eugene’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic in that he has been holding weekly ZOOM “coffee breaks” with librarians across the US and internationally. Eugene has also been sharing daily inspirational/motivational emails to offer hope and a vision for the post-pandemic world. These messages will be published on Amazon in a volume entitled Reflections During a Pandemic: Thoughts While Sheltering in Place. Eugene said, “To be honored for one’s work is affirming, but when that honor comes from colleagues in your profession, it makes it all the more special. I shall ever endeavor to be a steward of this award.”

After seriously weighing the pros and cons of hosting the 2021 Taste of Melrose Park, I had to make the difficult decision to postpone this year’s 3-day event for the following reasons. Health and Safety Concerns In 2020, with the Covid-19 pandemic raging across the country, it was a much simpler decision to forgo the Taste. However, this year, with the advent of Covid vaccines, we were cautiously optimistic that we could host the Taste, but with the Covid numbers in a constant state of flux it soon became apparent that this would not be possible. My administration and I have made helping residents to safely navigate the pandemic our number one priority, distributing hand sanitizer and face masks to every Melrose Park residence and hosting multiple free testing and vaccination days while conducting an aggressive social media campaign about Covid safety. Taking all this into account, I felt it would be counterproductive to our efforts to host an event that draws over 100,000 people, who most likely would not be practicing social distancing or wearing face masks while enjoying all the tasty foods. I would never consider hosting any event if there was even the slightest risk of anyone becoming fatally ill. Our Sponsors Are Financially Hurting It is no secret that our local businesses have suffered great economic losses over the past year. The State of Illinois estimates one-third of businesses have shut their doors. The Taste could not be held without the generous financial support of our sponsors. To ask these business owners to donate $500 or $1,000 dollars when they have endured such great economic hardships would be wrong. Logistics To put on an extravaganza of this proportion, planning must begin in earnest around December. Since much of this preparation had to be put on hold due to the volatility of the pandemic, I felt that it was really too late in the game to live up to the high standards we have set over the years. I feel confident as vaccines continue to roll out, that next year’s 40th Taste will be our best event ever as we gather together again as a community. If you have any questions concerning the Taste of Melrose Park, please call Peg DiFazio at 708-343-4000, ext. 4448. Sincerely, Melrose Park Mayor Ron Serpico

XAVIER SKINNER NAMED TO Coca-Cola Academic Team

Triton College is proud to announce Xavier Skinner was named a 2021 Coca-Cola Academic Team Gold Scholar and will receive a $1,500 scholarship. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver and 50 Bronze Scholars with nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each scholar also receives a commemorative medallion. “We are pleased Xavier has been named to the Coca-Cola Academic Scholar Team,” said Mary-Rita Moore, Triton College President. “He remained committed to his studies during this unique time, and diligently persevered. That leve l of dedication will serve him well as he continues on his academic journey.” Skinner, a River Forest resident and Walther Christian Academy alum, is a member of Triton’s Chi Zeta Chapter of PTK, Triton Undergraduate Men Pursuing Higher Education (TRIUMPH) and the Computing Society. Skinner will complete an Associate of Science degree in the summer of 2021. He plans to attend the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) to pursue a bachelor's degree in computer science and a minor in entrepreneurship. “When I first heard about this award, I felt truly honored.
