That’saweirdwaytostartacolumnisn’tit?Notwhenyougettobemyageand yourwholeworldseemsupsidedownlikeafiercely-shakensnowglobe.Funnythethingsyou rememberwhenyou’reoldenough,likewatchingmymommakestuffedartichokesforThanksgiving— oneofmymostfavoritetraditionsintheworld.Keeptheturkey,stuffingandcranberries,justsaveme anartichoke.Ofcourse,Ididn’tpaycloseattentiontohowshediditbutIknewitwastime-consuming andtediousfromtheget-go:buyingjusttherightsizeartichoke(toobig=tootough),washingeachone andcuttingdelicatelyneartheheartandsnippingtheouterleaves,thenstandingeachoneupsidedown andsmushingit,forcingtheleavestopart,makingenoughroomforthebreadcrumbstofilleach crevice.Idon’thaveaclueaboutwhatwentinthebreadcrumbsorhowlongtheysimmered,clearly evidencedbymyfirstattempttomakethem—Isetoffthefirealarm,someoneinthebuildingcalled 9-1-1andIwassufficientlyembarrassedwhentheMelroseParkFireDepartmentshowedupinfull gear.IthinkI’vemademypointveryclear:thelittlestthingscanoccupyahugeplaceintheheartfora lifetime.Andit’snotatallaboutdwellingonthepast,it’saboutrealizingthatsomeofourgreatest blessingsdon’tcomewithaheftypricetag.
