BecausemybirthdayisthedaybeforeHalloween,ofcourse,therewereafewcostumeparties.We werecutelittlecatsorcowboysorwewerewearingplastic-maskghost,skeletonorsuperherocostumes probablypurchasedat“BargainTown,”whichlaterbecameToysRUs,whichnolongerexists.Afew neighborsandclassmateswerethereandoneoftheonlythingsIremembervividlywasbobbingfor apples.Icanstillpicturethebucketofredapplesfloatinginthewater.AsIlookedattheoldwrinkled photo,Ithoughttomyself,“Anothertraditionbitesthedust.”Itwasfun,laughable,messyandmaybe evenalittlecompetitivebutsoonenoughitbecametaboo—waytoomanygerms.
Whenwewereoldenoughtogotrick-or-treating,wedidn’tneedachaperoneoraflashlightbecause weknewalltheneighborsforblocks—andtheyknewusevenbehindourlameattemptstobeprincessesandscarecrows.Wehauledinsomuchcandy,taffyapplesandevenalittlecashthatwehadtomake pitstopsathometoemptyandhitthestreetsagain.Sometimes,wegotalittletoogreedyandlazy, venturingoutofourcomfortzonetoapartmentbuildings.Itwasn’tlongintoourtrick-or-treating careersthatthetraditionwastrashedbythereportsofrazorbladesinapples,poisonedunwrapped candyandothertalesoftampering.Accordingtoonestudy,therewereactuallylessthan100casesof legitimatecandytamperingthroughoutthe20thcenturybuttherumorswereenoughtoruinthesugar rushofbulgingbagsofBazookaandBabyRuthsandoneoftheoldestU.S.holidays,startedinthemid1800s(yes,Ihadtolookthatup).Aswegotevenolder,weretiredourelastic-backmasksforthethrills ofAmling’sHauntedHouse(nowanAldistore).Believedtobethefirstofitskindinthecountry,this landmarkwasrightinourbackyard.Ifyoumadeitthrough(whichIneverdid),thecovetedBrave HeartAwardbuttonwasyourstocherishforalifetime.And,downthestreet,whocouldforgetTom NaplesMarket—thousandsofpumpkinsandone-of-a-kindcreationsbyPatNaples.
MypointofthisstrolldownmemorylaneisthatHalloweenhasbeenhandedplentyoflemonssince itsinceptionbutmanagedtoprevailtobecomea10.6billiondollarindustry.Alwayshappytoseelocal businessesprosper,butmyhatgoesofftotheparkdistricts,libraries,municipalitiesandnon-profits whodedicatepartoftheirtightoperatingbudgettokeepingthisfamily“ritual”alive,safe,and,forthe mostpart,free.Opportunitiestowearyourcostume,pickandpaintpumpkins,petlittlegoats,joina parade,sipappleciderandhotcocoa,sitaroundacampfire,goonascavengerhunt,takeaStoryWalk, hopaboardahayride,challengeyourselfinacornmazeandenjoyliveentertainmentarewithinminutes ofyourhouse,thankstothecreativemindsandresourcesputtoworkforyoubyLeydenParksand Recreation,VeteransParkDistrict,RiverForestParkDistrict,villageslikeHillsideandBerkeley, MaywoodFineArtsandTrailsideMuseumofNaturalHistory,TritonCollegeandothers.Soshutoffthe television,Xboxandcomputerandputdownyourphones(exceptfortakingpicturestoremindyouof whatanawesometimeyouhad).Kudostothefolkswhocoordinatetheseelaborateevents.MaybeI’ll seeyouthere...butfirstI’mgoingtofillupabuckettoseeifIcanstill“bob”justbecause...

TritonCollegeisnowofferingaDieselTransportation Technology(DTT)Programforthoseinterestedinreceiving certificatesintruckbrakeandsuspension,truckenginerepair andtruckdrivetrainrepair.Theprogramwascreatedtomeet thedemandsoftheindustry’stechnicianshortageandwants ofthestudentbodytolearnabouttrucksandvehicles.Allan Hertko,Triton’sTruckDepartmentcoordina torandinstructor, saidstudentswilltakeavarietyofclasses,suchasIntroductiontoAutomotive Technology,ElectricityandElectronicsI/II,DrivetrainI/II,EngineRepair,Steering Suspension,Heating,VentilationandCooling(HVAC),andPreventativeMaintenancein thisprogram.ThoseinterestedmustenrollinIntroductiontoAutomotiveTechnologyto starttheprocessofreceivingacertificate.Uponcompletion,Hertkonotedstudents couldseekemploy mentinanoriginalequipment(OE)specificdealershipsuchas PeterbiltorFord.Theycouldworkforfleets,localgeneralrepairandforamunicipal entitysuchasTritonCollege,thecityofChicagoorthestateofIllinois.

Helpsstudentswithdisabilitiesgainskills
TritonCollege’sCenterforAccessandAccommodativeServices(CAAS)hasanew programtohelpstudentswithdisabilit ies—theSkillEnhancementandEmployee Development(SEED)Program.SEEDallowsgreaterface-to-faceinstruction,according toDeborahKaczmarek,directorofCAAS.KaczmareksaidSEEDisanupdatedplanfor students,givingthemtheskillsnecessaryforfutureemploymentinthecommunity.
“TheSEEDProgramreallyhelpsstudentsgaintheskillsneededtoseek independentcommunityemploymentthroughinstructionandemployment experiences,”saidKaczmarek.Like thepreviousprogram,SEEDprovidesthesame typeofemploymentskills,suchasprofessionalism,financialmanagement,social communication,copingskills,jobexpectationsandresumewriting.However,students nowhaveclassroominstructionwithlecturesandhands-on,practicalactivities.
SEEDiscomprisedoftwocohortswitheachcontainingsixstudents.Thecohorts aresmalltomaintainindividualattentionandassistance.FromOct.20-Dec.16,the studen tswillperformcommunityworkexperiences.Uponcompletionofallthreeparts oftheprogram,studentswillgraduateandwillreceiveacertificatefromtheSchoolof ContinuingEducationonJan.12,2023.RegistrationwillbeacceptedthroughDec.12, 2022.
