A phenomenon is, as you know, a rare occurrence; but two extraordinary events on the same day is off the charts. On Monday, August 21st, millions of people around the country looked toward the sky to catch a glimpse of the impressive total solar eclipse that lasted only a few minutes. But before I could get in position for one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights, first I had to track down Melrose Park’s very own phenomenon—mail carrier Garland Gralow, who has lasted an unbelievable 60 years on the job. He has managed to fly under the radar for a very long time, quietly and proficiently doing his job until CBS Chicago reporter Jim Williams caught up with Garland shortly after he finally put in for his retirement. When the story aired on Channel 2 news, Garland went “viral.” The idea of him walking 56,000 miles, the equivalent of two trips around the world, was possibly more stunning than a peek at the sun’s corona. And, anyone who saw the Channel 2 story found out in a flash that Garland isn’t much of a conversationalist; he’s not thrilled with the hype over his possibly record-breaking longevity with the U.S. Postal Service. Still, since they say the only way to know a person is to walk a mile in their shoes, I parked my car and walked with Garland from house to house along the 24th Avenue portion of his route, which begins at the Post Office at 25th and North Avenue, down 25th to Lake Street and up 24th to Lemoyne Avenue—a six-hour mission on a four-mile route on a good day. But according to Garland, “There’s aren’t too many normal days anymore.” He’s been my mom’s mail carrier for decades, someone countless residents have relied on for generations. When he started in 1957, I wasn’t even born yet—and he didn’t even have a cart to push. Only Chicago and Oak Park had carts so other letter carriers were forced to strap on heavy bags until the union finally stepped in in 1963 to offer some relief. At the end of August, Garland will wheel his fourth cart up to the relay box for the last time. He says it’s been “a good run,” having nearly perfect attendance, except for getting a pacemaker 30 years ago. It all began “when we were young kids,” Garland recalls, at a company called Standard Coil (once located on Armitage Avenue). Garland and his friend, Ron Adamczyk, decided to apply at the Post Office. Ron stayed only three years; Garland, well, he made history. Most people count the days and minutes until they can retire, putting X’s on the calendar, but not Garland. When I asked him why, he simply said, “I just never thought of it.” As we walked and talked, the sweat poured off of me but he was calm, cool and deep in thought as he sorted the junk from the bills, citing that one of the most important skills on the job is “you have to memorize a lot. It’s the biggest thing. And you’re gettin’ me all confused.” Story continues on page 6. Garland

After 60 years on the job, a favorite mailman retires

Tina Valentino’s column, continued from page 3 No doubt Garland Gralow had more spring in his step back in the day but today, at 83, he just shuffles along— and no one seems to mind because the job still gets done with the highest degree of accuracy. One of his regular customers, Barbara Carlini at Carlini Agency Farmers Insurance office, 2405 W. Division, is among those who find the occasion of Garland’s retirement to be very emotional. “Garland was proud to be a postman and knew so many people on his route in a personal way. Other substitute mail carriers are very nice but Garland is special. His retirement means the end of a way of life for everyone on his route and especially for us. We were always happy to provide a warm place for him to stop in the winter and a cool place to stop in the summer. We will miss him very much,” she added. For others, like Diana Battelli Susek, the bond is even more personal. She was the first one on the route that he told about his retirement and she considers that to be a huge compliment from someone she’s admired over the years. “I first met him when I was 14 when I started to date my Ron in 1965. When we moved to 24th in 1976, we got Garland as our mailman! Rain or shine, he was here and he became just like family,” she said. “I used to freeze water in the summer and leave it on the porch for him. When my knees were so bad I couldn’t get up, I would leave the front door open and he would bring the mail right in to me. One thing is for sure, he’s a legend in his own time,” insisted Diana. Lori Ferolo-Treffens (pictured at left with Garland) stopped us on the route to wish him well. “Do you remember me? she said. “You were our mailman when I worked at Vine & Roses!” After a brief chat, Garland looked at me and said, “I don’t know why everyone wants to take a picture with me. It’s been happening a lot these days.” Then we took a selfie and he looked at me like I was crazy. “You know I’m backwards on a lot of things,” he remarked. One thing Garland is very sure of though is that he wants no part of this hoopla and legend stuff. This tough U.S. Army veteran, husband and father of three is not thrilled with the attention coming his way. He’d much rather take on snowstorms, walking barefoot in floods, getting up-close and personal with growling dogs because that’s all in a day’s work. He has been bitten only once and still remembers the address: 1732 N. 24th. He fell down some stairs only once and remembers that address, too: it was a grocery store that was once at 1214 N. 23rd. But no big deal. The thought of trudging through another winter, however, was a big deal and the biggest factor in deciding to retire. Other than that, he might’ve worked that route indefinitely. He has no plans to travel. Garland says he traveled a lot with his wife over the years, visiting some of this country’s natural phenomena like the Grand Canyon and the Statue of Liberty. He doesn’t have any plans to be lazy either. A member of Veterans Park District’s Cimbalo Fitness Center, 1203 N. 24th Avenue, he said he’s “gonna keep moving, even though it might be kind of slow.” I know this to be true because every time I see him I yell from the car window, “Can’t you go any faster?” And he always replies, “This is full throttle.” Garland Gralow had no pearls of wisdom to offer about the past six decades as we walked. Finally, I asked, “What do you think will cross your mind on your way home from the last day of work?” Not surprisingly, he replied. “It’s been good and bad like everything else.” Best of luck to Garland and, moreso, to his replacement (or replacements)—they will find out very quickly that Garland’s shoes are nearly impossible to fill.

MAYWOOD BATAAN DAY

Service and Sacrifice: This year marks a milestone for the Maywood Bataan Day Organization: the 75th anniversary of the (MBDO) first memorial event held in September 1942. From that day until now, Maywood remembers the nearly 100 young men who faced one of the most horrific events known to man: The Death March of Bataan. Through its H20 for Heroes program last month, Firehouse Subs Stone Park, located at 3124 W. North Avenue, collected over 60 cases of water to distribute to local first responders who are frequently overheated on the job. Inspired by the push from Neighbors Magazine, preschoolers in Diane Lullo-Hendricks’ class at Bright Horizons in Western Springs (pictured above with Neighbors publisher Tina Valentino) were among those who proudly participated in a big way to make the event successful. Also last month, Firehouse owner Sam Stanovich (center of the photo) and Robin Peters, Executive Director of the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation (not pictured), presented over $48,000 worth of life-saving equipment grants to Melrose Park’s Assistant Chief James Wrosch and Capt. Frank Islami; Franklin Park Chief William Brehm; Hillside Chief Jeff Pilz, Lt. Marco DeVito and Capt. Ken Carling; and Walther Christian Academy Head of Schools Wayne Wenzel. Last month on Thursday, August 24th, Mayor Ron Serpico and Jewel Food Stores President Doug Cygan celebrated the grand re-opening of the store at 800 W. North Avenue in Melrose Park. “Listening to our customers has always been a basic principle at Jewel-Osco and upgrading our Melrose Park location only allows for a more favorable shopping experience,” explained Jewel Communications Manager Mary Frances Trucco. “When our customers go into the store now, they will see an enhanced produce, O Organics, bakery, including a gourmet bakery case, deli with a wing, soup and salad bar, meat, floral and liquor departments,” she added. At every grand opening or grand re-opening, Jewel-Osco donates to a non-profit organization. At this event, Store Manager Jim Anderson and longtime store employee/ Melrose Park resident Lisa LaCalamita presented a check for $1,000 to the MAP of Hope Foundation. LaCalamita (at left) was instrumental in introducing MAP of Hope to Jewel management and making the donation possible. FREE Annual Fall Family Fun Fest September 24 Families are in for a treat when Triton College’s annual Fall Family Fun Fest returns to the college’s Botanical Gardens on Saturday, September 24. From games and activities to fall favorites, such as the ever-popular pumpkin patch and straw maze, families will enjoy a harvest of fun so much so, they won’t want to “leaf.” It’s FREE and open to the public. The free community event will have face painting, mask making, cupcake decorating, an obstacle course, Fun with Legos™, family portraits to capture the experience, and also back by popular demand, Maggie the Cow, which provides children with the learning opportunity of “milking” a mechanical cow. There will also be pumpkins for sale, plus a giant pumpkin will be on display for families to take pictures with! Attendees can get physical with Chicago-style stepping and get a lesson in fire safety by venturing through a Fire Safety House supplied by the River Grove Fire Department that is also bringing a fire engine to the fest. Back again will be The Great Triton Treasure Hunt that encourages families to work together to figure out clues that takes them to various areas around Triton’s campus.
