The lazy virus. As if COVID-19 didn’t wreak enough havoc on businesses, I think there’s a new virus on the horizon fo f r whcih there’s no vaccine. And it’s not the Delta. It’s the lazy virus. Over the last several months since businesses (especially small businesses) started to reopen, trying desperately to recover fr f om economic devastation, all I see are “Help Wa W nted” signs everywhere. We W deliver Ne N ighbors magazines to over 100 locations in the western suburbs each month and I can’t even keep track of the places fr f om Schiller Park r to We W stchester that have a sign in the window. Ve V ry oft f en the Help Wa W nted sign is accompanied by an additional notice that reads: “We W are very short staff ffed and no one wants to work r anymore. It’s the new pandemic. Most of us are work r ing doubles everyday. Please be patient and kind to the ones that did show up fo f r their job today.” Google it. There are millions of images and conversations on this topic but in the end, it’s really not because there are no good jobs—the Melrose Park r Chamber of Commerce and Speaker of the House Emanuel “Chris” We W lch just hosted two huge job fa f irs with stellar employers ready to hire; there are just too many people unwilling to work r because they simply make more money staying home collecting anything the state and fe f deral government will give them. Apparently, they aren’t using the time to read or educate themselves either. Let me off ffer the unwilling this quote fr f om Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “No work r is insignifi f cant. All labor that uplift f s humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.” Garbage man. Brain surgeon. All jobs matter. It’s heartbreaking to me to watch local business suff ffer all over again over the new lazy mantra: “Can’t reach it. Don’t need it.” On the fl f ipside, every issue of this magazine gives me a peek at people who rise up and conquer, don’t expect a handout and do what is right not what is easy. I have the greatest respect and admiration fo f r people who make sacrifi f ces—people who invest their time, talent and their own savings to fo f llow a dream, no matter how big or small. For example, I am in awe of the f rmer doctors and nurses fr fo f om We W stlake Hospital who personally committed to fu f nding and staff ffing an urgent care fa f cility to ensure that area residents would have walk-in access to healthcare. There’s no f me or fo fa f rtune involved in work r ing long hours without pay—just the gratitude of a mother with a sick child. Then there’s Jimmy Stramaglia, owner of Harlo Grill in Melrose Park r , who not only survived moving fr f om his landmark r location but prevailed through the mounting bills during the pandemic and pursued the dream of opening a second location in Elmhurst. There’s no fa f me or fo f rtune in the fu f ture fo f r him—just the gratitude of the person who wants a fr f esh cup of coff ffee and a hot breakfa f st. I’ve been in the kitchen with Jack and Nella Curatolo, owners of Gioacchino’s Pizzeria in Bellwood, on the hottest summer days—where the pizza oven is like a blast fu f rnace. No one wants to do the work r with the same integrity so, fo f r over 40 years, they’ve sacrifi f ced their health and fr f ee time to not only serve up authentic Italian fo f od to loyal customers without compromising quality but wash the dishes, answer the phone and make deliveries. Labor Day originated in 1894 aft f er a dismal chapter in American history when people, even young children, work r ed insanely long hours in unsafe f conditions. Labor Day 2021 mark r s another dismal chapter and the collapse of the work r ethic. Still, we salute those neighbors who embrace these words: Every job is a selff portrait of the person who did it. Autograph your work r with excellence.”
