When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself.

Guilty.

—Tecumseh, Indian leader

I think it comes from years of retail brainwashing that I have come to see holidays as just one day—when, in fact, they are not. They’re not even seasonal. Significant calendar days such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, Veterans Day and, even as far down the food chain as Small Business Saturday, are not one-hit wonders. These days are mile-markers to slow us down and make us take notice, colossal compasses to keep human beings on the right moral path every day of the year and yet many of us, including myself, continue to be completely derailed by the commercialization of these holidays instead of their extremely important essence. This isn’t a lecture. I’m just thinking out loud. Christmas has managed to earn an entire season, shortlived as it might be—and not because of Advent. How fortunate for retailers that the Christmas “season” starts in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner, causing heartburn, panic and pushing and shoving that quite often include injuries—none of which coincide with my delusions of the spirit of giving. Despite the corporate price-gouging and limited quantities, people camping out for the toy of the year and bullying by selfish shoppers, giving, in general, is generally on the uptick during November and December. Food pantries and non-profits thrive slightly, benefitting from people’s generosity (or guilt); consequently, coats and mittens, turkeys and hams, toys and books, warm pajamas and slippers get distributed by well-meaning individuals and compassionate organizations that work hard to make a difference in the world. But what about the rest of the year? Do we really think that homeless people, people who have fallen on hard times, veterans, seniors and the disabled don’t need food, underwear, socks, and necessities January through October? Other holidays are strangely observed exactly the same way. How often do you see police directing traffic at the cemetery? Never. Except on Mother’s Day, when everyone comes out of the woodwork with a bouquet of flowers, as if the cemetery wasn’t open seven days a week, 12 months of the year. Do the people we care about only deserve flowers on Sweetest Day or Valentine’s Day? And how ridiculous is the pressure to conform on these days, to buy boxes of roses and chocolates and pay for the most expensive dinner? As for Veterans Day, I’m not quite sure I can even confine my thoughts to paper. Each year, the number of heroic neighbors honored at local ceremonies dwindles and the handful of people, families and students who attend observances is infuriatingly sparce. Apparently, freedom is a “given” so why bother thanking a veteran for his/her service. After all, they only left the comfort of their homes and hometowns to travel halfway around the world to the most desolate and perilous places, put themselves in harm’s way and oftentimes return mentally and physically torn apart. A handshake is clearly too much to ask of most Americans. So Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away and I wonder: How many times do we actually bow our heads and say grace or, go one step further, mention a word or two about why we are thankful for everyone around the table? I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that it appears many of us are guilty of being thankful for the blessings in our lives only once a year, on the fourth Thursday of November. For the record, I’m thankful more than I let on. Albert Schweitzer once wrote: At times our light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us. As difficult and as thankless as publishing Neighbors can be some months, it never fails to provide that spark when the lights seem to go out. I have deep gratitude for the advertisers who have placed their trust in me to reach thousands of people with their message; to the owners of the businesses where we drop the magazines, we are nothing without you; and to the readers, like Lorie from Hillside, someone I’ve never met who sent me the most inspiring email last month. Some days, it just seems like all we’re doing is pushing a huge boulder of burdens up a hill only to watch it roll back down again. Maybe that’s because we live and rush from holiday to holiday instead of embracing what they really mean and making their meaning part of our everyday lives. Happy Thanksgiving, neighbors.

Operation North Pole (ONP) is a volunteer-based public charity that works with Chicago’s major children’s hospitals to provide a day of fun for families who have a child battling a life-threatening illness. Each year, 75 families are treated to a fantasy trip to the North Pole. Once again this year, ONP is collecting unopened, new bags of candy for its amazing candy station. Last year, nearly 4,000 pounds (two tons) were donated! “Never worry about ONP collecting too much candy,” said one volunteer. “Excess has been sent to the troops and other worthy causes. A few dollars can go a long way toward putting a smile on a child’s face.” For more information on ways to help, call 708-715-4717 or visit www.operationnorthpole.org.

With over 55,000 American centenarians, our nation boasts more people who are at least 100 years old than any other nation. And as this rising segment of our population attains the milestone, they hear a recurring question: “What’s your secret?” Their answers typically can be sorted into four categories—diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity, and social engagement. Not coincidentally, those four subjects were the focus of a free presentation hosted and sponsored by River Forest Township in October at the River Forest Community Center, 8020 Madison Street. The 90-minute program, “Healthy Living for Your Brain & Body: Tips from the Latest Research,” was led by Mayra Ligeza, manager of education and outreach at the Alzheimer’s Association, Illinois Chapter. The session kicked off National Memory Screening Month, which is designated as November. River Forest Township Supervisor Carla Sloan added that the program is part of the township’s Brain Health Initiative. It’s a hallmark project developed in conjunction with River Forest Township’s 100th anniversary this year. The Brain Health Initiative involves education, outreach, support and safety programs related to brain health, memory and dementia. River Forest Township is in the early stages of forming a collaborative effort around the initiative that could include Township Senior Services, Oak Park Township, and the Village of River Forest, among others. The Brain Health Initiative also dovetails with the recently completed Community Health Needs Assessment, the results of which will help to decide future public health priorities. In addition to the “Healthy Living” program, there are two other upcoming programs: On Thursday, November 2nd, from 9 am to Noon: Free and confidential memory screenings at Oak Park Township Senior Services, 130 S. Oak Park Avenue in Oak Park. This “healthy brain checkup” tests memory and other thinking skills, is simple and safe, and is an initiative of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. On Friday, November 17th, from 10 am to Noon: “Alzheimer’s Research: Embracing the Future,” at River Forest Township, 8020 Madison Street. Speakers Dean Hervochon and Steve Satek of Great Lakes Clinical Trials will present the latest research and discuss the role played by clinical trials. For both November programs, register by contacting Steve Smith at 708-383-8060; walk-ins are also welcome. River Forest Township efficiently and actively funds and directs the delivery of essential human services in the areas of youth, seniors, mental health and general assistance. The Township is online at www.RiverForestTownship.org.

TAVERNA ANNOUNCES PLANS TO OPEN YEAR-ROUND

Taverna On Division, previously open only April through October, recently announced that it will remain open year-round “to give customers what they’ve been asking for” since the Melrose Park restaurant launched in 2015. Taverna has received rave reviews on Yelp and on Facebook for its stylish architecture, expansive outdoor patio which offers a spacious Al Fresco experience during spring, summer and early fall, its breathtaking fire pit and, of course for its food, which includes specialties such as Shrimp Taverna and Grilled Skirt Steak with Chimichurri Sauce. Taverna, 1707 Division Street, centered in the middle of the Melrose Park neighborhood, is open Wednesday and Thursday, 4 to 10 pm; Friday and Saturday, 4 to 11 pm; and Sunday, 3 to 8 pm; the bar remains open until 2 am. Available for private parties, holiday parties, banquets and catering. Call 338-3333 for more information and reservations and follow Taverna On Division on Facebook and Twitter. Gift certificates are also available.

While it was bad news for H.H. Gregg, the appliance and electronics retailer, that the company went out of business, it was a reason to celebrate for Binny’s Beverage Depot, which jumped at the chance to open up in the 30,000 square foot retail space located at 7250 Cermak Road in North Riverside. Binny’s, the Midwest’s largest retailer of fine wines, spirits, beers and cigars, will add North Riverside to its list of over 30 stores in Illinois. Tentative plans are to open the store just in time for Thanksgiving. Visit the website at www.binnys.com for updated information.

Ballet Legere, founded in 1984 by Donna Vittorio, has been giving aspiring dancers the opportunity to perform in a professional production for over three decades. Once again this year, in the longest running production of “The Nutcracker” in the Chicagoland area, over 100 of Vittorio’s students will demonstrate their talent while giving audiences, young and old, the chance to experience the magic of Christmas from December 7-11 at Dominican University’s Performing Arts Center in River Forest. Weekend shows for over 4,000 are held annually; through the matinee shows, Donna is able to introduce nearly 6,000 students to her passion— the fine art of ballet and classical music.
