It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness...

—Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities, 1859

Stressed & Blessed. I’m usually fairly quiet at the Thanksgiving table and my prayer is generally the “these thy gifts” recitation even though, in my heart, I am grateful for so many people and blessings—so much so that if everyone took a turn around the table to say what they were thankful for the food would surely be cold when I was finished and everyone would’ve been happier if I had stayed home. I often say I’m lucky—to which my mother always replies, “Never say lucky, say blessed.” And because I have been fortunate in countless ways in my life, I’ve tried to give back whenever possible, donating time, money, items being collected as well as providing space in Neighbors so that others might find gratification from contributing to worthy causes. I had no idea how trivial my efforts had been until my mom was recently admitted to Westlake Hospital for hip surgery after a simple stumble in her bedroom. Blessed that my amazing mom had never spent a day in the hospital in her life but stressed that age and anaesthesia and pain would forever change the landscape of our lives, I held my breath for what seemed like days. Like everyone else who faces adversity, I ran the gamut of emotions and my mind raced like a hamster on a wheel. But while I paced in desperation, I had no idea that this place where I drop magazines each month was a commune of compassion and exceptional care. From the emergency room to the operating room, from 5 West to Rehab, from the cafeteria to the maintenance staff, from administration to the physical therapy graduation chicken dance, I learned the hard way (don’t I always) that Westlake Community Hospital is truly a gift to the western suburbs. While some may disagree, having different or disappointing experiences, I am compelled to use my platform to publicly acknowledge those who go above and beyond their job description and pay grade. We may never see an impressive television commercial for Westlake with violins playing in the background but I did see the words of the Alabama song “Angels Among Us” play out before my eyes: When life held troubled times and had me down on my knees, there’s always been someone to come along and comfort me; a kind word from a stranger to lend a helping hand, a phone call from a friend just to say I understand. Now ain’t it kind of funny at the dark end of the road, someone lights the way with just a single ray of hope. Medicare doesn’t care if patients eat their lunch, brush their hair, watch Maury or get terribly homesick and sad. But the Westlake staff that has become cherished friends cared for us, two anxious strangers, like we were their own family—through quiet companionship, through holding a hand, with a round of applause, with a much-needed hug and a tremendous amount of patience and personal attention. I’ve done a few good deeds in my life but they pale in comparison to the kindness shown to people you’ve never met, who are at their lowest and most vulnerable. For the past 16 years, I’ve worked hard to make Neighbors your community publication, to shine a light on the unsung and the noteworthy; but for the past 91 years, Westlake has worked even harder to be a rock-solid community institution that people can trust with their health—and their emotions. This Thanksgiving, I have two words: Westlake Hospital.

★ VETERANS DAY ★

A POWERFUL COMMITMENT

Veterans Park District Observance

Few things withstand the test of time like a solid relationship. At Raymond James, we take great pride in the fact that the recommendations of our clients are our primary source of new business. It attests to our success in sustaining long-term relationships —ones that not only endure but improve with age.

Hillside’s 16th Annual Veterans Day Parade

Each year for the past 12 year, Veterans Park District invites the community to Bulger Park located at 16th and Hirsch in Melrose Park to observe Veterans Day with a ceremony that brings residents, schools, churches and war heroes together. Everyone is invited to this year’s ceremony set for Friday, November 9 beginning at 10 am. For more information, call 343-5270. The Village of Hillside along with the Broadview/ Hillside American Legion Post #626 will host the 16th annual Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 3 beginning at 1 pm. The parade starts at the Village Hall, 425 Hillside Avenue and proceeds east on Butterfield Road to Wolf Road and north to the Veterans Memorial in the Hillside Commons. Grand Marshal for the event is U.S. Army/Korean War Veteran Ken Patete. Ken was one of the original volunteers of the Hillside Civil Defense, known today as the Emergency Management Agency of Hillside. Triton’s TRIUMPH Program gets $500,000 grant to expand

Minority male students enrolled at several Chicagoland community colleges will soon have access to increased resources to help them keep their goals on track and achieve academic and professional success. Triton College recently received a $500,000 grant from the Educational Credit Management Corporation (ECMC) Foundation to broaden its TRIUMPH (Transforming and Inspiring Undergraduate Men Pursuing Higher Education) Program, which provides resources and support to minority male students. The five-year grant also allows Triton to take the lead on developing similar support programs at other regional Hispanic and minorityserving institutions. Recently, leaders from Waubonsee Community College, Elgin Community College and Malcolm X College gathered at Triton to lay the groundwork for the expansion of the TRIUMPH Program onto their campuses. “The ultimate goal of TRIUMPH is to empower our students to not only succeed at the community college but to move on into the workforce and into four-year institutions with a high degree of confidence,” said Deborah Baness King, Triton College interim dean of Student Services. TRIUMPH began at Triton in 2014 with 25 students participating. There are currently about 130 students enrolled in the program. Isaiah Negron of Schiller Park is currently a TRIUMPH scholar. He and several peers shared how the support they receive through the program is helping them find success. For more information on TRIUMPH, visit triton.edu.

Get in on Deck the Mounds this holiday season

The holiday season is right around the corner, and you’re invited to get in the spirit with Triton College while supporting scholarships for hard-working students. Triton’s #DecktheMounds Festival of Trees has become one of the most anticipated holiday events of the season for members of our communities and we are excited to once again turn the River Grove campus into a winter wonderland. The Festival of Trees returns Thursday, Dec. 6, 5-7 p.m., on the Triton College Mounds located on the west side of campus. Here’s how you can get in on the fun: 1. Sponsor a tree (Triton will provide the lights) on Triton's campus as an individual or on behalf of a village, town, school, business or organization. Each lighted tree is $150 with proceeds to benefit the student scholarships through the Triton College Foundation. 2. Come decorate your tree on campus, at your convenience, anytime between Nov. 29 and Dec. 6 (all trees must be decorated by 4 pm on the Dec. 6). 3. Attend the big event! Enjoy complimentary hot chocolate, cookies, holiday music and seasonal photos with Triton’s mascot Troy. Also, take in a free holiday movie in our cafeteria during the event. Purchase of a tree is not necessary to attend the event. Be sure to share your photos with us using the hashtag #DeckTheMounds. For more information or to sponsor a tree call 456-0300, ext. 3165/3172, or visit http://www.triton.edu/tritontree/.
