MAY22

2011, began as a warm, sunny spring day in the town of Joplin, Missouri. The Joplin High School Class of 2011 commencement that afternoon marked an important moment in the lives of the graduating seniors as they looked ahead with bright hopes and dreams for the future. Little did they know that just minutes after they accepted their diplomas and threw their caps into the air a massive tornado with winds of 190-200mph and a path nearly six miles long would tear Joplin apart, taking the lives of at least 159 of its 50,000 residents.

5:41PM

the tornado struck, leaving families separated, homes destroyed, and lives forever changed. Three school facilities and ten of the district’s learning spaces were lost, including the high school. Seven students and one staff member perished. Just as this moment is ingrained in the community’s collective consciousness, so is the ticking time before the start of the school year. As the district, families, students, and community members struggle to prepare for a return to some level of normalcy and a year of academic

excellence, they need support more than ever.

1.1

Organizers.

We are a cross-industry

group of professionals who are connected

to design, education, and Joplin, Missouri.

Whether it is our hometown or where our clients have called home, at 5:41pm on May 22nd, part of

us was shaken when this devastation struck. As

professionals dedicated to creating places to learn,

particularly striking was the loss of and damage to the public schools of Joplin.

This year, summer

break is a time of rebuilding - a town, classrooms, and hope. In this spirit, we are moved to issue a very different RFP - a Request For Poster.

The founding coordinators represent Perkins+Will, izzy+, Tandus and Maharam. However, as Joplin has taught us, communities are better together. We invite all those individuals

and corporations committed to education, design, and rebuilding a community to join us with your talent and sponsorship.

1.2

Beneficiary. Our beneficiary is Bright Futures, a community-based education

nonprofit that directly supports the Joplin Public Schools. In the wake of the

tornado, they are coordinating the Adopt-A-Classroom. The Bright Futures

Adopt-A-Classroom provides funding to individual teachers as they replace materials central to the classroom not covered by insurance. In many ways, teachers are the

designers of their classrooms. The classroom supplies tools and materials lost in the tornado, a majority acquired over years and with personal funds, crucial to making learning environments that are warm, personal, and dynamic.
