Object Analysis & Rule Using the Fan as an object to explore the panel and fold system the first step in our process was to undertake a system analysis

Sketch Design Development RECAP: Sketch Deigns from our indevidual work was brough together to find common themes and ideas
Sketch drawings revealed four main areas that we were keen to explore: a tree system of panels connected by pins. stacking of panels in a horizontal manner, transpereancy and movement.

Refined Sketch Model Reconfigured Object/System: Through a series of sketches our design developed to become a develpable surface on the human body
By combining both ideas together the first proposed design revolves around the repetition of the same form. Both sketch designs were exploring the idea of using mulitple pins to create volumn around the human form. The final form is a structure that wraps around the shoulders to provide protection on the side of the head and supports the back from the base of the spine. This sketch design was used for the Rhino model. 4
Sleeping Pod proposed design
2.3 Proposal 1: Using the digitilzed mesh of the body as a base we modified our second skin ideas.

Sleeping Pod proposed design
6
To understand how the sleeping pod works around the body we first had to understand how the subject would sleep. Initially the pod was designed for a subject to lean back into when sitting down. After personal space mapping had been undertaken however, the design changed to accomodate a student laying down on a desk. This position was chosen as it was the most common position for a student to sleep in when analysiing university students. With this Space mapping we descovered that more room at to be given to allow for arm movement.

Precedent Research
Transperancy
Digital Weave by Phillip Skewes
Description of precedent Although this precedent does not use a panel and fold system it was used as a precedent as it has key features which we identified in our design and offered a logical solution to how to achieve them. The transpereancy and .... achieved was able to create movement throughout the piece achieved by panels closer together and furthur apart was something we wanted to achieve in our own design. The material of this system however would not support our own design as seen in later prototypes paper could not hold the weight of the pins.

Precedent applied to design Transperancy
How can you use this precedent to influence your design ? Transperancy was a key idea from the begining of this project yet we did not know how to tranlate this into our design. The presedent showed us that if we placed the horizontal panels at different sections (some closer together, others further apart, that we could achieve our goal of transperancy. 9

Testing Effects Photographing Effects: To describe the effects of the jointed panels the following photographs were taken.
The desired effects of the sleeping pod is to create a sense of comfort for the person using it whilst providing protection on the outside. The inside curve of the panel when conneced to together with all of them creates a bubble, with no sharp lines or intrusions. The inside will look like the sloping topography of a landscape. The outside curve of the panel however uses extrusions and rolling panels to provide a sense of protection.
