Reflecting back on this techtonic it was my weakest. Although seemingly a simple concept i found it difficult to translate this into a built form. Precedent researched helped me understand the Philosophy of Point Line and Plane. As the design process goes however, It took me many attempts to create something that was what i thought Point, Line and Plane represented.

In this Techtonic i learnt how the weight of the material can enhanse the atmosphere of a structure. In related to the built form however i found it interesting that most Mass structures are in fact mock architecture, with a cladding of a harder material and a light weight frame. For this techtonic i focused on the mass or “weight of the structure to be above a smaller form so their is an euphoric effect. As the design process developed i learnt how drawing techniques and conventions are critical in portraying your ideas. This took many attempts to portray the atmosphere i was wanting to stimulate.

1.3 Frame & Infill
Frame and Infil was the strongest of the techtonics and i found it easy to incorporate this into the conceptical. Researching precedents i found alot of Japanese architecture exploring this techtonic as well. The traditional Japansese house was something used as inspiration for my models. The idea of the ‘beyond’ for this form of arhitecture is a core idea of this architype, views are frame yet not fully revealed until the person moves toward and beyond the space, for them to find another frame. It was here that i found a connection between Techtonics and could move forward to my conceptical.

1.4 Conceptical
To design the final project i needed to connect the three techtonics together into a single form. The common deliniation i made was the idea of “frames” and the “view beyond”. With a connection between the three techtonics i could move foward and explore a conceptical for the Herring island Project. My initial intension was for a grided system however it was here that i began to explore with elongated blades slicing through the landscape. I wanted an intial reaction of confusion for the person walking around the site, however the more they engaged with the site the more the architecture would reveal to them.

2.3 Design Development

A Turning point in the design was found through precedent research. “Reframed by Paul Scales and Atelier Kit offered an elegant solution to my ideas of how to achieve numerous frames in my structure. By extruding through each blade of the design i could hide more secrets within the architecture. I found i could use this to meet the brief to provide a space that children would identify as secretes and a place to view an object. Week 12 feedback offered me an insight on how to improve my design furthur by placing the blades on angels and instead of flattening the ground plan allow sections to follow the natural contours of the site. From here i was able to move onto my final 2

To understand the physical parametres and complexities of my design i chose to construct a model. Here i posed a question of what was i framing? what are the indevidual views beyond the frames i am creating? To answer them a detailed analysis of the site on both the mega and macro occured

3.0 Reflection

Architecture Studio Earth has been a short and sharp learning curve for me in both the design process and learning a new form of graphic representation of which my ideas can be expressed in. Overall i am very pleased with my design process and journy to the final project. Time permitting however i would have liked to have worked on the three techtonics more. Due to not having a concept in mind at the beginning of the semester my techtonics were hard to pull a conceptical out of. Precedents were a crucial form of knowledge for me as they explained the concepts and helped demostrate how they can be translated into a built form. As for the final project this is a radical building and imposition onto the landscape. Instead of flowing with the earth i deliberatly chose to juxtapose and create a bold statement that incorporates the ground plane and above and below. Time permiting earlier on dureing the concept phase i would have continued with the idea of a frame as this is a very imposing structure and in terms of design is out of my usual style. I found this challanging and to conteract this bold statement the materiality of the building became a key manipulating tool to pare it back into the island. I also justafied this concept by addeding a green wall of which native flora can be displayed on.
