Measured Drawings 1.1 Object: Fan.

The fan was measured using a number of techniques. Firstly, the fan was photographed with the paper skin still attached. Once complete the skin was removed and the fan was scanned and drawn onto tracing paper as can be seen by the image (a) and (b) on page 2. The final technique used was done with a ruler and pencil as scanning alone did not show enough detail. This was used for sections such as image (1) and (2) (a) Plan: open, (b) Plan: Half open,

Analysis
Once Measured Drawings of the Fan had taken place, the object was then studyed for a system analysis. From this the basic fundametal rule of how the fan worked and created volume was established. For this excersise the skin of the fan was removed and only the panels of the fans were evaluated. The rule found was that a series of panels were connected by a pin, and with force, open up to create a larger surface area. The panels were only connected at one point and twisted on themselves so they did not rub against each other

(c))
By analysing the fan it was found to have three main stages of movement. The first was fully closed as can be seen by image (a), the second is a half or semi open stage (b) and the third is fully opened (c). The materialistic quality of the fan is all to make the lightest object possible whilst still being able to preform its function of moving air. The panels of the fan are made out of a light weight timber, with the pin connecting them made out of plastic. The skin connecting the panels was made out of paper however this was removed in the next stage to find the fundamental rule of how the fan works.

After measured drawings and a detailed analysis of the fan had taken place the object was digitally modelled. This was done in the simplest way possible to gain a basic understanding on how to use the Rhino 3D software, for these purposes the paper skin of the fan was removed and only the panels of the fan were modelled. The fan was constructed useing one basic shape (Image 1) this was formed through two Interp curves and a single Polyline. Once joined together to form one shape, it was then extruded to form one panel of the fan (Image 2). This shape was copied, rotated at one consistant point and moved to sit above the previous panel. This was repeated several times until the fan was completed. (c)

How does this respond to your personal space? (b)
Sketch Design #2 utalises the same idea as sketch design #1, allowing privacy whilst not being disconnected from the world around. It is however, excecuted differently.

How does this respond to your personal space? (a) plan elevation of model, (b) section elevation of model, (c) preliminary sketch ideas of sleeping pod with the panels and pins, (d) preliminary sketch ideas of the panels and the connections

This sketch design responds to my personal space by allowing privacy but still being able to see parts of the world around me.
The precedent for this sketch design was the Dalian International Conference Centre. This building is wrapped in a series of metal sheets that when folded and twisted allow for light into the building.

How does this respond to your personal space? Following the previous sketch models, this design creates volume through the connecting and twisting nature of the panels. This design also allows for both privacy and connecteness with the outside world. (d)
