on the Runway Development Program with Melbourne Airport speaking to the community, businesses, organisations, schools and residents.

At the centre of the program is a proposed third runway, needed to meet expected growth demand for travel to and from Victoria. Runway Program Director Kerr Forbes said planning was underway as part of a major development plan. “We are undertaking traffic, social and economic assessments along with environmental, health and

“Melbourne Airport will reach a point where we need more airfield capacity, making a new runway system pivotal to unlocking aviation capacity for Victoria,” Mr Forbes said. Mr Forbes recently joined the Runway Development Program to lead the team, combining his extensive years of experience in project and airfield operations at Melbourne Airport. “This is a great project to be involved in, one that will contribute to the prosperity of Victoria and Australia and leave our state and the country with a great asset,” Mr Forbes said. “It is very exciting to be part of this program, which will ensure the airport is ready to manage

the growth being driven by the Victorian economy and support job opportunities for residents living close by.” 

 Chief Executive Officer

Message from Lyell Strambi I recently attended our fourth annual Customer Service Awards to recognise service delivery partners working across the airport precinct. These passionate and customer-focussed individuals and teams provide a wonderful service ensuring visitors have an enjoyable travel experience that starts or ends at Melbourne Airport. Recognising the great work of our team is important and we heard some inspirational stories about our nominees who commit to delivering exceptional customer service. As a partner of not-for-profit community organisation, Western Chances, Melbourne Airport was honoured to be invited to the annual Good Business Forum in mid-June. The forum is an opportunity for organisations to support Western Chances in providing education scholarships for talented young students in Melbourne’s west who are experiencing financial hardship. It is truly moving to hear what these talented and passionate young people are achieving with the support of Western Chances. Melbourne Airport is pleased to offer new travel opportunities for Victorian travellers. On 1 July we welcomed Xiamen Air. Based in the Chinese seaside city of Xiamen, the airline offers two services each week aboard a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. It’s always exciting to welcome a new airline to Melbourne Airport and Victoria, providing travellers with more options to explore the world, particularly to a fast-growing travel destination such as China. We look forward to continuing to support the Victorian tourism industry by providing as many opportunities as possible for more international passengers choosing to fly to Melbourne.  

Past students ready to give back Melbourne Airport community partner, Western Chances, has launched an Alumni Community Program to support past scholarship recipients through mentoring, professional networks and training opportunities. More than 2,000 young people will be eligible to become part of the program, which launched in July. Western Chances CEO Rhyll Dorrington said the Alumni Community Program provides an opportunity for past scholarship recipients to form their own professional networks. “A constant theme through the many thank you letters and calls we receive each year is a desire from past scholarship recipients to give back and support other young people,” Ms Dorrington said.

“While helping past recipients to form their own powerful professional networks, the program will also help participants transition from education to their chosen careers.” Western Chances’ scholarship applications for 2017 are now open to students living within the municipalities of Melton, Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley, Hobsons Bay and Wyndham. Students are nominated by people who know the student within a professional capacity such as teachers, school welfare coordinators or professionals from community or welfare originations. For more information about nominating a talented young person please visit www.westernchances.org.au/ page/scholarships.  

Western Chances was formed in 2003 to ensure talented youth from Melbourne’s west weren’t held back from achieving their potential due to lack of financial support. Melbourne Airport is currently a major corporate partner of Western Chances and, since becoming involved with the organisation in 2008, has directly supported more than 254 young people to reach their potential.

What has been your biggest challenge so far?

 Profile Meet Luc Ramalinga, Melbourne Airport’s Airfield Manager. You’ve recently been appointed as Airfield Manager. What does this role involve? As the Airfield Manager, I am responsible for the Airfield Operations and Maintenance team which makes sure that the 92,000-plus passengers that arrive and depart Melbourne Airport every day, do so safely and efficiently.

What is your most memorable achievement at Melbourne Airport? Over the last six years I have had the opportunity to work on various projects in operations,

construction and, most recently, on the runway development program, so there’s a few to choose from. I would have to say my biggest achievement was being part of the team that delivered the Terminal 4 apron expansion project where we constructed new aircraft parking stands while the airport kept operating around us.

Increasing and improving our airfield facility while minimising disruptions to our airlines has definitely been challenging. We found that good communication with key stakeholders and well planned construction staging was the best way to manage these types of works. For example, for the runway overlay project, which was completed in 2011, we laid 35,000 tonnes of asphalt during six-hour closures at night with minimal disruption to the airfield and operations.

What do you enjoy the most about working at Melbourne Airport? I love coming to work knowing that every day will throw up challenging situations that

require an amazing team effort from everyone who works at Melbourne Airport.

What is your background? I studied Civil Engineering and Business at university and have 10 years’ experience in aviation design and construction. My particular passion is airport pavement engineering, which doesn’t sound all that exciting but I assure you, it is!

Have you always wanted to work in the aviation industry? I’ve wanted to work in aviation since I was a little kid. Back then I wanted to fly planes but then when I studied engineering I knew I wanted to work at airports instead. And I’ve been lucky as my experiences have allowed me to work at major airports in Australia and overseas.

the Airport Coordination Centre is at the heart of everything that happens on the ground at Melbourne Airport.

This onsite team coordinates all airport activities 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It manages the emergency phone numbers as well as the public switchboard after hours and has a key liaison role with the air traffic tower. Melbourne Airport recently upgraded its Airport Coordination Centre to a larger space equipped with stateof-the art technology such as an all-in-one telephone, radio and PA system that allows staff to answer calls, speak to

security staff on radios, and make public announcements through a central system.

“With passenger numbers forecast to increase every year for the foreseeable future, it was important to design the new Airport Coordination Centre with capacity for future growth,” Head of Aviation Operations Katie Cooper said.
