Building a better airport

2015 will be a milestone year for Melbourne Airport. A number of major projects will be completed as part of a $10 billion program to transform the airport over the next 20 years.

A key part of this investment is the new Terminal 4, due to open later this year. The new domestic terminal will be the home for Jetstar, Tigerair and Regional Express, and will cater for up to 10 million passengers each year.

In the lead-up to the opening of the new terminal, work is underway on the interior facilities and fit-out, while the terminal exterior is also being completed.

From arrival to departure, Terminal 4 will reflect Melbourne Airport’s position as the aviation gateway to Victoria.

Some exciting new retailers will also be joining the new terminal.

New and upgraded transport facilities and roads will support the terminal. A multi-level transport hub will provide pick-up and drop-off bays as well as car parking and facilities for taxis, buses and Skybus. Covered, elevated, walkways will provide passengers and visitors with a direct and seamless path to the terminal.

The new transport hub also includes the delivery of the first stage of the airport’s elevated loop road, which will help to improve access to and from the airport and the terminal precinct.

Improving access between the airport and major arterial roads is another key focus for

Melbourne Airport. The 3.3 kilometre extension of Airport Drive between Sharps Road and Mercer Drive will provide access into the airport from the M80 Ring Road. Work is now underway on the road’s base, drainage and lighting. Airport Drive is due to open to traffic in mid-2015.

These projects have created up to 3,000 additional and ongoing employment opportunities.

The number of jobs related to construction and airport operations will continue to grow as the airport continues to expand in coming years.

Staff will be available to answer questions about Melbourne Airport including infrastructure developments, terminal upgrades and other projects underway, or planned.

Message from Chris Woodruff Welcome to the first edition of The Gateway for 2015.

It is going to be a big year for Melbourne Airport. During the next 12 months we will deliver a new terminal and transport hub, along with major upgrades to our airfield and road networks.

We will also switch on our new tri-generation system that will provide power to the entire airport precinct and reduce our carbon emissions by approximately 30 per cent.

Our project teams have been able to successfully deliver these projects safely, in a busy and growing operational environment, and with minimal disruption to our passengers and visitors.

Our transformation involves more than physical improvements to our facilities.

Last year we introduced a new corporate vision, which places our customers at the centre of every decision we make.

The staff profile on our Executive Customer, Andrew Gardner, gives you an idea of what we are doing to ensure we deliver an excellent customer experience to our passengers and visitors.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our recent community survey. We received a large number of responses and, along with the technical studies, this information will assist in planning for the runway development program.

We are now working on the environmental, technical and social impact studies for the runway development project.

The studies will be conducted over the next 12-18 months and as we conclude these studies, we'll share the results with the community. The studies will help inform the preliminary draft master plan which will be available for public comment in 2016. We will keep the community updated on our progress.

Protecting our bandicoots

Melbourne Airport works closely with a number of organisations that deliver environmental and social programs in the local community. Among these is Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA), which delivers the ‘Healthy Habitats’ program at Woodlands Historic Park near the airport.

The program involves maintaining a 300 hectare predator proof habitat for the critically endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoot. The habitat

was established in 2012. In mid2013 the site was declared predator free and ready for bandicoots. Since then 47 bandicoots have been released in the area.

CVA has carried out regular sessions to monitor the health and well-being of the bandicoots.

These sessions have found that the bandicoots are successfully breeding in the habitat, with new bandicoots found in the pouch and on the ground.

Since it opened, the site has contributed to a 25 per cent increase in Victorian Eastern Barred Bandicoot population.

Now considered extinct in the wild, predator safe populations, such as the one at Woodlands Historic Park, are considered the best chance of recovery for the Eastern Barred Bandicoot.

3 Runway Development Program

Community aviation consultation group meeting Do you have a question about Melbourne Airport or want to find out more about what is happening at the airport?

Detailed design and technical studies are underway for the runway development program.

Then come and join community and airport representatives at the next community aviation consultation group (CACG) as they discuss the airport and its community.

These studies will be conducted over the next 12-18 months and include investigations into the social, economic and environmental impact of the project, which includes the extension of the existing east-west runway and the construction of a new parallel east-west runway.

Community and airport representatives will respond to questions from the public for the first 30 minutes of the CACG meeting.

Melbourne Airport will continue to provide updates on the results of these studies as well as the planning process for the runway development program, including public comment periods.

Melbourne Airport representatives will also be available before and after the meeting to discuss developments and plans.

Meet Andrew Gardiner, Melbourne Airport’s Executive Customer since July 2014.

Working at the airport is exciting and challenging. It is so dynamic and there is always something different happening.

What does your role as Executive Customer involve?

What has been the most challenging part of your role to date?

Melbourne Airport’s vision is to be Australia’s airport of choice by delivering a superior customer experience.

I work closely with the executive team to understand how our customers experience the airport. I have a great team that helps develop Melbourne Airport’s retail and car parking businesses, along with our marketing, advertising and digital opportunities.

What are you working on at the moment to ensure the airport delivers excellent customer experiences?

Our aim is for our passengers to experience everything

runway development program.

The survey is providing some valuable insights into what our community likes – and doesn’t like – about the airport and its operations. 

More than 14,000 people work at the airport. Every one of them has an important customer experience role.

Melbourne has to offer from the minute they book their ticket to when they return home.

Since I started, we have introduced new technology in our multi-level car park to help customers find available car parks. We have also introduced licence plate technology to help you find your car.

In the coming months we will announce more initiatives to ensure Melbourne Airport delivers superior customer service.

My challenge is to make sure we share our corporate vision with the whole airport community to ensure everyone delivers a superior customer experience.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I have recently relocated from Sydney. I love living in Melbourne. I appreciate the pride Melbournians feel about their city. I hope we can make Melbournians as proud of their airport as they are about their city.

The Melbourne Airport customer care program involves a team of diverse and passionate volunteers who answer questions, provide information and give direction to the many passengers and guests travelling through the airport.

Our volunteers provide a vital service for our passengers.

In November 2014 the group contributed more than 790 hours to help people move more easily around Melbourne Airport.

TNT warehouse

 Project updates

Melbourne Airport’s 220 hectare business park is an important part of the airport’s operations, and particularly its role as a transport and freight hub for Victoria. The business park is home to a number of global companies, including DHL and Border Express.

Taxiway slab replacement project Melbourne Airport’s airfield supports around 550 aircraft movements every day.

Maintenance of the airfield’s apron, runways and taxiways is essential to ensure the airport continues to operate safely and effectively.

The taxiway slab replacement project involves replacing 70,000m² of concrete pavement across three taxi lanes to maintain their safety and reliability. The project

is being completed in a fully operational environment to minimise construction impacts on airlines and passengers.

Works to replace concrete on the Uniform taxiway were completed in early 2015. Work is now starting on the Golf taxiway, which contains some of the oldest concrete pavement at the airport. More than 133,000 hours have been worked on the project which is due to be finished in 2016. 

Measuring air quality around the airport Melbourne Airport uses air quality monitors to measure and understand the impact that vehicles and other machines have on air quality.

Air quality monitors are currently located on airport land as well as within the local community. The monitors also capture construction impacts, local weather conditions and odours related to the airport's operations. 
