Looking back to 2018, a central focus for all of us involved the necessary and final fundraising for the Geoff Handbury Science and Technology Hub.
I particularly like the following explanation of philanthropy: “The mission of philanthropy is to give people the gift of the opportunity to do something of value, potentially something transformational – to touch the lives of people they may never know”.
The Hub officially opened on a cold Melbourne day in March in an atmosphere of good cheer and quiet satisfaction. It is an extraordinary project: marvellous for the teaching of STEM at Melbourne Grammar for generations now and to come. Already, students speak of the tremendous spaces available for learning and personal enrichment. In addition, there was strong support for the important and progressive Indigenous Bursary Programme, a focus of our Annual Giving Appeal. In October, Sue Felton joined us as our new Director of Development. Her contribution, already, has been substantial. She is warm and engaging. She is a powerful advocate for the School and its philanthropic endeavours. I know she has met already with many of our benefactors. If you have not yet had the opportunity to meet her, I would encourage you to do so. We have an enthusiastic and hard-working Board, representative of the parent bodies on all three campuses at the School. We are greatly appreciative of all of our donors. We want to make sure that we continue to engage you; continue to provide you with opportunities to see and to understand the difference that your philanthropy brings. Let us know how we are going. And if you see there are ways we may do better, do let us know.

Since I joined the School in October 2018, I have been delighted to learn how generous is our community. Our donors – Old Melburnians, current and past parents, staff, volunteers and Friends of the School, support our students by investing in their future, often without personally knowing the recipient(s). We do not take this support and trust lightly – and never for granted. In this edition of Learn, Achieve, Grow we feature stories of donors whose personal philanthropy aligns with our School values: leadership, diversity, learning, integrity, excellence, spirituality, and a sense of community. These values shape us as a community and convey the beliefs that positively influence our behaviour and the way that we all interact with individuals, groups and communities. I look forward to meeting you and, wherever possible, to thank you in person for your support.

The members of the Melbourne Grammar School Foundation Board play a key role in promoting a positive culture of philanthropy in the wider School community. They provide leadership in respect of philanthropic endeavours and, in addition to giving of their time and expertise, these volunteers actively seek to encourage others to join them in providing financial support to the School. Providing appropriate and timely recognition of donors also forms part of their remit. Offering financial support for students who need and deserve it — young people from all walks of life who share our values and contribute to our diverse learning environment
Ian and Paula McCall began contributing to Melbourne Grammar School when their son James (OM 2018) was in his early years at Grimwade House, as both donors and volunteers. During James’s time at the School, Paula supported the School through participation in Friends of Grammar committees, Ian was involved with the MGS Boat Club and both Ian and Paula gave generously of their time on the Snow Sports Committee, and in other ways. Notably, Paula and Ian have also been major donors to the School across a number of philanthropic pillars. “Our first decision to make a donation to the School came after I attended a presentation on the development of the Nigel Peck Centre for Learning and Leadership many years ago,” explains Paula. “I remember thinking what a fantastic resource that would be — and it is.”

Indigenous Bursary Programme Helping more young Indigenous men access a high-quality education in a welcoming, nurturing and warm community that aims to encourage strong cultural understanding

“We felt a similar level of excitement about the Geoff Handbury Science and Technology Hub,” says Ian. “Even though our son would not directly benefit from it, here was an opportunity to help create something that would be a new benchmark in education. I remember walking through the Hub at the Opening and thinking what an exemplar it was, and how it would reframe science and technology education for many students.” Paula and Ian have also contributed to the School’s Scholarships programme, with a particular focus on supporting Indigenous bursaries. “Education is the foundation of everything,” says Paula. “There is a great need in our community to facilitate access to quality education for Indigenous children.” Contributors to a wide set of causes across the broader community, both Paula and Ian came from humble beginnings. “We, and our parents, have worked hard to achieve a level of comfort in life but we think that, with that comfort, comes an obligation to support philanthropic causes,” says Ian. “It behoves us all to give back to those things that are sometimes viewed as discretionary in the community and not funded as well as they might be — such as supporting children who don’t have access to leading edge educational facilities like those we have here.”

Since 2013, Melbourne Grammar School has proudly partnered with the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation to achieve proven outcomes in Indigenous education.
A chance meeting at a golf club ultimately led Dr Nick Uren (OM 1957) to contribute to the Indigenous Bursary Programme at Melbourne Grammar School, but it was a circuitous route.
The group also obtained funding to convert a ship container into a cool room and to construct a large array of solar panels to provide electricity mainly for air conditioners and refrigerators.
After retiring from his career as a prominent soil scientist, Nick enjoyed a game of golf now and then. Sitting in the club house after a game one day, he started a conversation with the person next to him, and this was to considerably reduce the time available to play golf from that point on. After discovering Nick’s area of academic expertise, the person (Trevor Pratt), asked him to join the Mitchell Plateau Association, a group of people who was hoping to improve the lives of Wunambal people at Kandiwal – a cluster of Indigenous people living in a small settlement located on the Mitchell Plateau in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Nick acceded and, more than a decade later, the community has been transformed. “My role initially focused on creating sustainable food production systems for the outback community of mainly women and children,” explains Nick. “Over time I assisted with the introduction of some modern conveniences, including telecommunications, and the establishment of a school.”

In recent years, Nick’s enthusiasm for assisting Indigenous people has resulted in him making regular financial contributions to the Melbourne Grammar School Indigenous Bursary Programme. “I want to be able to help provide the opportunity for Indigenous boys to gain a strong education so that they can contribute back to their own communities in the future, in whatever capacity they can,” he says. “The Programme extends beyond the walls of the School. It shows young Indigenous men what is possible.” For Year 12 student and Gunditjmara man, Jacquin Mifsud, this support doesn’t go unnoticed. “We’re given an education that a lot of other boys back home don’t get the opportunity to have,” he says. Jacquin also observes the impact the Programme is having on his peers. “Non-Indigenous students learn about our history on a personal basis, not just in class. It opens the minds of students who might have limited experiences with different cultures,” he says.

WITHERBY TOWER SOCIETY

The Witherby Tower Society (WTS) is a special group of individuals who have decided to include a gift to the School in their Will. Since its establishment in 1995, the Society has welcomed 261 members. Whilst the majority choose to allocate their bequests to the MGS Foundation Endowment Fund, some members elect to support Scholarships or Indigenous bursaries.

Suzanne Gray has been dedicated to initiating social change throughout her lifetime. And she means for this impetus to continue well into the future through her bequest to the Scholarships programme at Melbourne Grammar School.
Four generations of the Gray family have attended Melbourne Grammar School, beginning with Peter’s father, John Gray (OM 1926), then Peter. Peter and Suzanne’s son, David (OM 1987), also attended the School and their grandson, James, is currently in Year 1 at Grimwade House.
“My late husband, Peter (OM 1957) always said: “Melbourne Grammar School made me who I was.” and I’d like other students to have access to that opportunity,” says Suzanne.
“I feel strongly about Melbourne Grammar and have great pride in it,” says Suzanne. “I met one of my closest friends in the School foyer on my son’s first day at the School, and I do feel that my husband’s great love of the School has extended to me.”
Since early adulthood Suzanne’s benefaction has primarily supported women and children in need through a variety of causes and organisations. She currently works closely with Launch Housing, where she funds the Women’s Rapid Re-housing Programme.

Suzanne was recently inducted into the Witherby Tower Society on the basis that she has notified the School that she intends to leave a bequest to the School in her Will. “It was really nice to be invited to attend Witherby Tower Society events,” explains Suzanne. “My husband was a Witherby Tower Society member and gave a gift to the School through his Will. I think he would be pleased I was following in his footsteps. In addition, I have enjoyed reconnecting with the School through the Society and as a grandparent.”
