The Melbourne Rebels will host the Crusaders for the first time in three years when the New Zealanders come to town on Saturday night. The Rebels return home for their second last home game of the season and last outing at AAMI Park before June’s international break. The Crusaders remain the only undefeated team in the 2017 Vodafone Super Rugby season after they defeated the Chiefs 31-24 in the Fijian capital Suva on Friday night last week.

Results are split between the two sides in Melbourne after the Rebels defeated the Crusaders in the first meeting at AAMI Park in 2012 before the Kiwis bounced back to win the last game in 2014. The Rebels have always enjoyed a hard fought contest against the most successful side in Super Rugby history with four of the five previous fixtures resulting in a margin of ten points or less.

MCMAHON EXCITED ABOUT BEAST PARTNERSHIP

Sean McMahon wants to make up for lost time with backrow partner Amanaki Mafi for the remainder of the 2017 Vodafone Super Rugby season. McMahon has watched in awe of Rebels new recruit Mafi after the Japanese international filled the backrow void for the first 11 games of the season. After an ankle and knee injury sidelined McMahon for the first half of the season before the Wallaby returned to action off the bench against the Reds and made his first start of the year

against the Waratahs. McMahon had nothing but praise for Mafi’s impact at the Rebels this season. “He(Mafi) is an absolute beast, I can’t fault anything that he has done,” McMahon said. “He’s been every week, just smashing runs, tackling and ruck, he’s an absolute animal out there.” McMahon regrets not getting the opportunity to play more with Mafi this season but looks forward to partnering with him for the remaining four games of the season.

3

“I haven’t had the opportunity to play as much as I would have liked with him,” McMahon said. “As I’ve said before he’s a beast of a player, we could’ve worked really well together. “Hopefully we can finish the end of the year together and see how it goes.” Mafi, in his debut Super Rugby season, leads the competition for runs with 138 and most prolific forward for run meters and offloads. McMahon was last year named Super Rugby player of the year. The Rebels host the undefeated Crusaders for just the third time in the club’s history and first time since 2014. McMahon insist that the Rebels need to give a full 80-minute performance after being guilty of lapses of concentration on the stroke of half and full time this season. “They are having an amazing season, but as you know, it’s just down to us and the attitude we bring this weekend,” McMahon said.

4

“As I’ve said before he’s a beast of a player, we could’ve worked really well together.” “We just got to step up and bring the physicality and we have to play the full 80 minutes, and that’s talking about the 10 (minutes) of that first half and the last 15(minutes) of the second half. “We just can’t drop off as a team, every player needs to be doing everything.” “Especially the bench needs to come on and really put on the performance we need.” McMahon said he’s still building towards an 80-minute performance that he can be proud of and known for. “I think at the moment for me, it’s really all about building back that game fitness,” McMahon said. “Being able to go the full 80 minutes at the full pace, that I’m known for.”
