The Melbourne Rebels have returned home after two weeks on the road to face Johannesburg’s Lions today at AAMI Park, Melbourne. It will be the third consecutive week that the Rebels have faced off against South African opposition after drawing with the Sharks and going down to the Kings on their recent tour of South Africa.
The game kicks off a big month of rugby for the Rebels as they line up against the Lions (H), Reds (H), Waratahs (A), Crusaders (H) and Brumbies (A) before June’s international break. The Rebels take on the African 2 Conference leaders at AAMI Park for just the second time after the visitors claimed the previous meeting 20-16 in Round 6, 2015. Today’s Round 11 match is proudly brought to you by Melbourne Rebels platinum partner, Land Rover!

REBELS ROARING TO GO
The Rebels are set to prey on a confident Lions pack at AAMI Park on Saturday night. The visitors will have their tails up and fancy their chances in the team’s second trip to Melbourne but Rebels assistant coach Morgan Turinui believes the Lions’ attacking style will complement of the hosts. The Lions have dropped just one game this season when they fell to the Jaguares in Round 3 but bounced back with six consecutive wins to sit pretty at the top of the Africa 2 Conference. Turinui expects an intense arm wrestle between two sides eager to play. “The Lions aren’t your typical South African side, they play the most Rugby, kick the third least amount of any team in the competition, which is not normal for a South African team,” Turinui said.
“What you will get this weekend, weather permitting, is a high octane and high tempo game of Rugby. “We’re down the table so they’ll fancy their chances to score points so they’ll play rugby. This suits us because we want to play to rugby, back ourselves and see what happens. “If we can have the intent, intensity, desperation and the willingness to work like we did against the Chiefs, Waratahs and Brumbies then we’ll be in this fight. “We’ve just got to make sure that we’re in this fight physically and mentally then see if we can back our attack to cause them problems because I’m sure they’ll do the same.” The Rebels have made six changes to the starting line-up that went down by 41 points to the Kings in Port Elizabeth last weekend,
3
including the return of prop Toby Smith to the starting line-up for the first time this season. Smith, who made his first appearance of the year off the bench last weekend against the Kings, will be joined by an experienced front row alongside James Hanson and Laurie Weeks. “I was very impressed with the way that he came off the bench, some of his carries, his communication and experience, all the things that we know that he’s good for,” Turinui said of Smith’s return. “Front row is one of those positions where we’ve got a bit of depth with guys pushing for spots which is always encouraging so we just need to try and find that right balance. “We’ve got a really good combination brewing with Fereti, Siliva and Tyrel and then the older and more experienced guys which is really important for us.” The Rebels are without captain Nic Stirzaker after the scrumhalf injured his ankle on the eve of the Kings game and will be sidelined for a few weeks while fellow No.9 Mick Snowden has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a foot injury. The injuries have seen scrumhalf Ben Meehan return to the starting line-up supported by the uncapped Harrison Goddard on the reserves bench. A Super Rugby debut would cap off a memorable week for the 18-year-old after Goddard was awarded man of the match honours in Randwick’s win over Easts in last weekend’s Shute Shield derby before a brief appearance at the Australian U20s camp. Goddard’s Northern Suburbs rival Hugh Sinclair will make his first Super Rugby start after two appearances off the bench for the Rebels on their recent two-game tour of South Africa.

“What you will get this weekend, weather permitting, is a high octane and high tempo game of Rugby” Fullback Jack Maddocks will make his much anticipated return from a shoulder injury which has sidelined the Australian U20s representative since the opening round of the 2017 Vodafone Super Rugby season. The Rebels will host the Lions for just the second time in the club’s history after the visitors claimed a narrow 20-16 victory over the hosts when the two sides last met at AAMI Park in 2015. It will be the third consecutive week that the Rebels have faced off against South African opposition following a 9-9 draw against the Sharks in Durban and 44-3 loss to the Kings in Port Elizabeth last weekend.
