Arty is living a double life. In his head he is an explorer, a movie star, devilishly handsome. In his real life Arty is a blob, a beached whale, Jabba the Hutt in a housing commission flat. At 400kg and rising, he’s a young man literally going nowhere. With free life-saving surgery up for grabs, Arty and his devoted mum JoJo allow a film crew from Shocking Fat Stories to document his last desperate attempts to lose weight before the operation. Can Arty overcome his failings and live the ordinary life he’s only imagined? Will physical transformation be his ticket to personal freedom? Using multimedia and puppetry, Beached is a dark satire about reality TV, love and the pain of not fitting in. EXTEND THE MTC EXPERIENCE Pre-show Talks & Teachers’ Notes
MTC Ambassadors
In 2013 MTC will offer pre-show talks and post-show Q&As for all MTC Education and VCE play-listed productions: Other Desert Cities, Beached, and The Cherry Orchard.
Each year, MTC selects a group of twenty-five Year 11 theatrelovers to participate in our Ambassador program. These students meet each month to attend productions, hear from guest speakers and share their responses to theatre with a group of likeminded peers. Nomination forms have been mailed with the 2013 Education Poster and are also available to download from mtc. com.au. Nominations close Friday 8 March 2013 at 5pm.
Pre-show talks are conducted by an experienced VCE assessor and address the key knowledge and skills of Drama or Theatre Studies. They are forty-five minutes in duration, and will commence two hours prior to the performance in the auditorium. Post-show Q&As with the cast and creative team are twenty minutes in duration and will commence shortly after the performance. For each of these productions MTC will produce comprehensive Teachers’ Notes, which will be available for free download from mtc.com.au.
