Join Melbourne Theatre Company for our very first NEON Festival of Independent Theatre NEON sees us open our doors for the first time to the independent theatre community, celebrating Southbank Theatre as Melbourne’s home of live storytelling – a place of passionate engagement, conversation and connection.
Running alongside the five performance seasons, NEON EXTRA is a diverse program of free events ranging from in-depth forums for all, to workshops, networking and mentoring opportunities for independent theatre makers.
We are excited to invite five of Melbourne’s top independent companies to stage their work, their way. With complete curatorial freedom, the artists of NEON 2013 will present a suite of original productions in which some of the finest theatrical talent is given the space, and wings, to fly.

In a tiny derelict flat, a voracious mother, her repressed daughter and flamboyant poet son live in squalor, nourished only by competitive manoeuvring and nostalgic fantasies. You recognise this family. They have the same lost dreams and drowned sorrows as your neighbour, uncle, stepbrother.
They are caged animals, wild at heart, with the American Dream – capitalism and hedonism – oozing through the seams of their imaginative worlds. Menagerie is a new production based on the extraordinary life and work of one of the giants of the American stage, Tennessee Williams. DANIEL SCHLUSSER ENSEMBLE has built an exciting reputation for exploding the classics onto the contemporary stage with a unique sensibility and style. DANIEL SCHLUSSER ENSEMBLE is a group of artists that make works for theatre, opera, visual art and other media. Since its inception in 2007, the ensemble has created Life is a Dream, The Dollhouse, Poet#7, Ophelia doesn’t live here anymore, and their forthcoming adaptation of The Master and Margarita. Daniel Schlusser is the 2012 George Fairfax Memorial Fellow.

Silent and tranquil, the safety of their surrounds is laced with threat. Each aspect of their lives – presented and viewed in lucid, cinematic detail – is book-ended by their unexplained arrival and departure.
In the middle of nowhere lies a unique boarding institution for girls. Here, in this idyllic refuge, cut off from the outside world, a group of young girls studies ballet and biology. We watch as they’re groomed for an unknown future.
On the Bodily Education of Young Girls brings together some of Melbourne’s most exciting theatre makers, to create a sublime exploration of innocence and power.

ABOUT FRAUGHT OUTFIT
‘This is a weird and wonderful theatrical experience: sleep on it, and let your unconscious decode its meanings for you.’ The Age (on Persona)
FRAUGHT OUTFIT was launched in 2010 by artistic director Adena Jacobs. Its first production, Sophocles’ Elektra, translated by Anne Carson, received three Green Room nominations including Best Direction (Independent). In 2012, the company premiered Ingmar Bergman’s Persona to critical acclaim at Theatre Works. In 2013, Persona will be presented at Malthouse Theatre and Belvoir St Theatre. Created in collaboration with St Martins Youth Arts Centre. Performed by teens and adults, for an adult audience.

THE RABBLE is a collection of artists formed in 2006 by Syd Brisbane, Kate Davis and Emma Valente. THE RABBLE are theatrical mavericks: experimental, surreal, brash, magical, ambitious and original. They have produced many works in both Melbourne and Sydney, including Orlando, Special, The Bedroom Project, Cageling, Salome: In Cogito Volume III and Corvus. Their work has been nominated for several awards, with Special receiving the 2011 Green Room Award for Design Integration.

Moira and Connor O’Flaherty leave County Mayo for a better life in the Australian goldfields. But all they find in the harsh soil of Ballarat is poverty and heartbreak. As the Eureka flag is raised, Moira makes a terrible pact in order to save her family. The effects of this one night will be felt for generations. Spanning one hundred and fifty years of toil, hardship, and devastating etcetera, The Sovereign Wife is one woman's epic journey across our sunburnt country – from country Victoria all the way to the Simpson Desert.
Taking inspiration from The Man From Snowy River, Baz Luhrmann's Australia, and the spellbinding artwork of Ken Done, it is a wild bush-doof through our national identity. After vivisecting the Civil-War melodrama (Summertime in the Garden of Eden) and EvilChild horror films (Little Mercy), DIY drag–theatre troupe SISTERS GRIMM are set to tackle their biggest challenge yet: the Great Australian Frontier Epic.

SISTERS GRIMM (Ash Flanders and Declan Greene) have been working together for the last six years, cultivating a unique brand of ‘gay DIY drag-theatre’ performed mostly in non-traditional spaces. Their shows incorporate a wide range of art forms and genres: from theatre to performance art to sexploitation cinema. Past works include Summertime in the Garden of Eden, Little Mercy, and Cellblock Booty. The Sovereign Wife has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
