T
his 2016-2017 autumn-winter season that is heralded by this MStyle issue looks set to be very interesting for
Meliá Hotels International on the American continent. Over the next few months – the high season in the region – there are 5 scheduled new hotel openings in Brazil, the United States and Colombia, while the recently opened emblematic hotels such as the Innside New York Nomad, the ME Miami, the ME Cabo and the Meliá Braco Village in Jamaica, will no doubt continue the successful curve of the company’s launches. At Meliá we are constantly reinventing ourselves to remain the leaders in the sector and this is the reason why the company is also expecting an excellent season for the resorts in the Mexican Caribbean (mainly Cancun, the Mayan Riviera and the Keys), and in the Dominican Republic and Cuba. Results will be boosted this year by the re-branding and renovation processes carried out at some of our key hotels such as the ME Cabo, the Paradisus Cancun and the ME Cancun where the results have been exceptional. For a company that is as global as Meliá Hotels International – operating in all markets and in almost every leading travel destination, – each quarter of the year is “high season”. After an exceptional year at our resorts in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands, favourites among European visitors, over the coming months we will be concentrating on Meliá’s urban hotels in Europe’s main cities including London, Paris, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Vienna, Rome, Milan, Barcelona and Madrid. By adding our leadership in the holiday hotel sector to our experience in the meetings, events and conference sector (MICE segment), at Meliá we have managed to optimise a combined "bleisure" experience (business + leisure) for our customers in highly popular urban destinations such as the big European and Asian capitals, where hotels of such brands as Meliá, ME by Meliá and Innside by Meliá are increasingly popular. In this edition of our MStyle magazine we will therefore visit our hotels that are ideal for an “urban getaway” in Europe this season. Additionally, in the “Sunny Days” section, we will take a winter tour of the perpetual sun in the Canary Islands, and visit the “super-trendy” ME Miami as well as four magnificent examples of the Gran Meliá brand: Gran Meliá Colón, in Seville; Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques, in
Madrid; Gran Meliá Nacional Rio de Janeiro; and Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora, in Tenerife. Many thanks for your loyalty and for accompanying us on this journey.

A HISTORY DETECTIVE Did you know that the Duchess of Alba painted by Goya – the one who, they say, is the Nude Maja – was unable to have children and adopted a little black girl? I was told this by my publisher, Ana Rosa Semprún, and it left me both puzzled and intrigued. Since then, and for a whole year, I have devoted myself to unravelling this unusual story. While writing my latest novel it was exciting to immerse myself in a sea of documents, files, memoirs and studies, and to talk with many people in order to become a sort of history detective. The most fun side of this old occupation of mine that consists of joining together words are the myriad things you learn when you try to recreate a life and its circumstances. In the case of the Duchess of Alba, it was even more fun. Who is not familiar with the various portraits that Goya painted of her? I believe that the master from Fuendetodos was a psychologist and ahead of his time. Nobody has been able to capture the passions hidden behind the subtle raising of an eyebrow as he did, or those tense hands that betray a triumphant smile drawn on someone’s lips, or eyes shining with a sardonic glow. Was Goya the Duchess’s lover?

Carmen Posadas: The writer Carmen Posadas was born in Montevideo (Uruguay) in 1953 and lived there until she was 12. In 1965 she moved to Madrid with her family. She has lived in Moscow, Buenos Aires and London – in these cities where her father served as ambassador. She is the author of more than 15 children’s books and also five novels, two biographies and several film and television scripts. In 1998 she won the Planeta Prize. Her work has been translated into 23 languages, and in 2003, Newsweek magazine called her one of the most important authors of her generation.
Did she also have an affair with Godoy, or with the master from Ronda, the great Pedro Romero? It was exciting for me to depict an era such as that of the 18th century. The Age of Enlightenment, of Reason, of intelligence, of important historic upheavals and revolutionary inventions – but also the age of love, of dangerous liaisons, of great passions and treacheries. Moreover, I attempted it following the advice of another outstanding son of that extraordinary century – James Boswell. He wrote a biography regarded as the best of all time, that of the extremely famous Doctor Johnson. Boswell said that to recreate an age, one should pay as much attention to History with a capital letter as to what the French call le petit histoire. In other worlds, to society gossip, fashion, affairs of the heart and the salon, and to apparently insignificant events. Boswell also said that if one wants to talk about Julius Caesar, for instance, it is important to point out that he was bald, was very fond of laurel leaf wreaths and that is why he conquered the world. It might seem a witticism but it is true. Small, anecdotal things determine great feats and sublime milestones and they do so because behind the facts lies that exciting, contradictory, sublime and also abject thing which Graham Greene called “the human factor”. Becoming a history detective has its advantages. New and surprising things that are concealed behind many false truths that have been accepted without too many questions being asked are discovered. But also – and I believe that this is the most interesting thing of all – you discover a lot about yourself, for the past is a comfortable mirror that allows us to look in (and understand) ourselves better than if we looked in a mirror of the present. Why? I have wondered this many times, and I think that the best answer is that looking at oneself in a faraway and remote mirror enables us to understand, freely and without prejudice, what one really is and feels.

An artist to turn back to time and time again

Ángel León is a curious, sharp, imaginative, talented chef... A cook and an inventor in equal measure, his obsession with the sea has led him to discover a unique and personal, unprecedented line of work that is being adopted by a number of followers in various places. His nickname “Chef of the Sea” is what best defines him. His kitchen at the Meliá Sancti Petri hotel’s Alevante restaurant is an extension of his successful Aponiente restaurant. For those who don’t know you, who is Ángel León? Ángel is an unpretentious inhabitant of the bay of Cádiz and above all, a lover of the sea: a cook by profession, a devotee of the sea. I consider myself to be courageous and visionary, tenacious and passionate. I have been on the food scene for many years now, but it’s not been an easy path. Many of my dreams have come true though. The most important thing of all is that I can prepare the food that I really like: dishes exclusively associated with the sea, which is my passion. First came Aponiente in Puerto de Santa María – now turned into a fun eatery; later on, you opened Aponiente Molino de Mareas, in the middle of the wetlands. And now, the

Alevante, too. What makes them different from each other? Alevante is a splendid project. I don’t like to differentiate between both restaurants. Thanks to the proximity of Alevante and its great team, we can keep up with whatever is happening at Aponiente. At Aponiente, new paths are forged and new dishes for the menu are created, whereas at Alevante, they are prepared some weeks later. One is like an extension of the other but with a more laid-back atmosphere. What do you think that the Meliá group saw in you? From the first moment, I had an excellent rapport with Alberto Lalinde, director of the Meliá Sancti Petri. There was a good understanding between us, and from that starting point, we began working together. The Meliá

The project was Alberto’s idea and when he told me about it I loved it and did not hesitate to embark on this project. We are very happy with our activity there, and we trust that our customers are, too. Is the proximity between both restaurants a good thing for you? Certainly, proximity is extremely important for a seamless connection between both restaurants. It allows for constant visits and communication between both teams, which is perfect for running the project as it deserves. Distance makes things difficult. One of the best climates in the world stole the heart of the company’s president back when the company began in the ‘60s. a direct impact on our emotions. Feeling the sun’s rays on our skin, breathing clean air, walking barefoot along the sand or looking at a star-studded sky fills us with vitality. If anyone doubts this, they only have to ask the inhabitants of the Canary Islands. An average of 24º C in the summer and 20º C in the winter turn this archipelago – located less than 100 km away from the African coast – into a paradise for everyone. In 1976, Gabriel Escarrer

then was partly explained by the tourist boom of the ‘60s and ‘70s (he always had a good nose for tourism), but it was also the natural result of the success that his emerging company was beginning to enjoy. According to Escarrer, “once I had got a good team, I took another significant step: the company’s diversification.” He thus established the foundations of a philosophy that, over time, would end up becoming the company’s DNA throughout its 60 years in operation: diversification in a global and universal market. Sixty years on, and with more than 6,000 rooms and 16 hotels in five of the seven islands, that significant decision of the young hotelier is still reaping rewards. 60% of the so-called “Mediterranean region” revenue – in the first quarter of 2016 – was generated here, in the Canary Islands. But the highlight of the Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques hotel is its very location as the kilometre zero for enjoying each and every one of many places that are a short walk away: enjoy strolling in the Sabatini gardens, having a picnic at the Debod Temple, having a coffee at the Plaza Mayor, learning about writers and playwrights in the Las Letras district and, of course, seeing all the paintings by Velázquez at the Prado Museum. “The Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques is a huge satisfaction for all of us,” states its director. “You only have to hear the president talking about this hotel and see his involvement in the entire project. Madrid is a great destination, very important for MHI, and the hotel is an excellent product in a location that is very different from those we have opened in the capital city until now.”

GRAN MELIÁ PALACIO DE LOS DUQUES This new five-star hotel is a member of the exclusive Leading Hotels of the World group. It is located in the centre of the Hapsburg area of Madrid, a short walk from the Prado Museum, the Puerta de Alcalá and the Royal Palace. It has 180 rooms, some of which overlook a historical 3,000-square-metre garden that is now the hotel’s heart. Cuisine is given special importance and the hotel has three restaurants: the Coroa Gallery Lounge & Gardens, a 24-hour space serving Mediterranean specialities (ham, different kinds of cheese, Japanese dumplings, marinated sardines…); Montmartre 1889, a French-Spanish restaurant where you can enjoy dishes such as foie From top to bottom, champagne at the Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques terrace; details of the Thai Wellness Room; and below, the spa treatment area. INTERVIEW WITH
LAURA SÁNCHEZ Although she was born in Germany, this top model has Andalusia flowing through her veins. She was raised in Huelva, an hour from Seville which is a city that she adores and where she takes us to the Gran Meliá Colón. The most important fashion capitals have lain at her feet, and firms such as Rolex found the image of their brands in her elegance. Her face has been on the cover of top fashion magazines and, today, she combines her work as a model with that of a businesswoman.

As regards personnel, every hotel where MICE service is important has a department and a sales and operational structure specifically designed for the segment. The big challenge now is full digital transformation. “We are working on technology development,” explains Moreno, “to achieve better integration among central systems, the group systems in place at our hotels and other market players that are big demand drivers for the MICE segment, including our own website – where the entire meetings and events area is being renewed.” All this with a single goal – “to speed up processes so that our clients can have a much more effective and quick response.” Above, view of the Rose Bar at the ME Cabo, a unique hotel for conventions and events. oing on from the waves that Sir Norman Foster breathed into the new life of the BBC’s first
headquarters, we move to continental Europe, to another hotel designed by another architect who also wanted to honour the past. The original building now occupied by the ME Milan Il Duca was designed by Aldo Rossi no less, one of the big names of Italian architecture. A man who sought to be in the vanguard by basing it on the past, an intention that can be seen in his design of the old hotel Il Duca: its façade is a nod to Bologna’s unfinished cathedral, the Basilica of San Petronio, whose lower section is in marble while its upper one is in brick. Rossi wanted to establish a dialogue with a 14th-century building, and curiously enough, its roof now offers views of the 21st-century. Just like in London, here is another superb terrace from which to view the city and the modern towers of Porta Nova. The hotel stands in an interesting spot located in the historic Piazza della Repubblica, a benchmark for the city’s big classic alberghi explained its director, Alessandro Misani, former director of both the Madrid and Ibiza ME hotels and who is very knowledgeable about Milan. Also close to the hotel are the Porta Garibaldi and the old city – so, it is halfway between the historical centre and the new city that reaches to the sky and seeks its place in the 21st century.

nother renowned architect, the Frenchman Dominique Perrault, represents the third stop on this trip through
a changing and revisited Europe and to which the hotel industry’s new projects are contributing so much. We are at the Meliá Vienna, located in Austria’s new tallest building – specifically, on 17 of the 58 floors of the 250-metre DC Tower. We are on the other side of the Danube, in Donau City, one of the most interesting new urban developments of recent years: a futuristic and sustainable city located on the old landfills of a stretch of river that was not as blue as the famous waltz declared. Vienna is transforming itself from one of the banks of the Danube and is opening up a new business district that is linked to both the historical district, laden with imperial reminiscences, and the Vienna of the 21st century. The Austrian capital is building an increasing number of towers yet without renouncing its splendid past. The interesting aspect of Donau City is that the idea of this urban development is not to lose the everyday life of the historical city: there are squares, vantage points for views, pedestrian and commercial areas, office buildings next to new skyscrapers: there is no ghost district on the old landfill. There are people going about on bikes, professionals enjoying an after-work drink in this new business centre, people leisurely strolling along the pavements. More than one will probably go to the tower’s 57th floor, the hotel’s restaurant – the 57 Restaurant & Lounge. And again, here is another spectacular rooftop bar which confirms the idea that these stunning towers with sensational views, DJs and cocktails are not only found in New York or Bangkok, but also in this new old Europe. And, what’s more, we can see history from them.

The modern Innside Aachen is in a contemporary building next to the cathedral in which Charlemagne was crowned emperor in the year 800. The city is full of history, and there is no lack of interesting places near the hotel such as the famous Spielbank casino and the Couven Museum. And again, a contrast: a modern and functional hotel from which one can discover the heart of the Holy Roman Empire as well as vestiges from the Middle-Ages. “There was a lot of excitement at the opening of the Innside as it was at least five years since such an important hotel had opened in the city. Its touch of modernity was warmly welcomed by the locals,” says Nadine Weidig, Marketing Director of the Meliá group in Germany. And again, a rooftop with views

Located in Gottschedstrasse, one of the most fashionable districts in the city, says Weidig, the hotel is in a neoclassical building dating from 1853 called Kosmoshaus that has been fully refurbished and also has a newly-constructed part, a spectacular façade with several slanted planes. A new fusion of the classic and the modern in Bach’s home city. Finally, we go from Leipzig to Dresden to complete our tour: again an Innside hotel, this one is located in front of the Albertinum Contemporary Art Museum and adds a touch of modernity to a city that suffered terribly during the Second World War and that, once again, has been able to re-write its destiny.

RECOVERING HISTORICAL BUILDINGS AND BUILDING CITIES FOR THE FUTURE The goals are not mutually exclusive nor are the projects contradictory. The commitment of Meliá Hotels International to the urban planning of the cities where the group operates via its different brands is all about recovering and breathing new life into buildings of historical and architectural value, as well as playing a role in the expansion of the urban fabric with projects that add value. Reputed architects such as Foster, Perrault and the late Zaha Hadid are some of the designers of the Meliá group’s projects in cities such as London,Vienna and Dubai. In some cases, they are mixed-use buildings that promote the idea of cities whose hotels are part of these new urban networks that combine residences, business, services and leisure. While the group contributes to a more sustainable and liveable future it also believes in the past. The recovery and conservation of historical buildings like the recently-opened Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques in Madrid, the ME Milan Il Duca, the Innside Leipzig – to name just a few – is not only a commitment to the legacy of our forefathers, but also a way of contributing and breathing fresh air to the historical districts in which these buildings stand. They are hotels designed not just for the traveller as they also aim to attract the locals with their culinary and leisure options. The goal is to promote cities (www.melia.com). was right here, at 1100 Biscayne Boulevard where the Casa Moderna was located. That was when “social networks” used to be within the limits of tangible things, and each photo was preceded by the experience of a touch, a voice or an aroma. “El Casa”, as people used to call it, was once a hospitality brand and is now home to the ME Miami, a new hotel that combines tradition with the convenience and comfortable luxury demanded today in the age of millennials. On your arrival, you are welcomed by surroundings that remind us that interior design is a fine art. Nothing is missing: the lighting is perfect, the revitalising splash of the lush greenery through the big windows lets in salty gusts of blue and green which announce the presence of a nearby sea – and an eclectic mixture of pop which brings together all the elements and geographical sounds of the most all-embracing HispanicAmerican hub of our era. Tourist brochures will of course talk about its 129 luxurious rooms. They will tell you that it has a spectacular swimming pool on the roof with a bar where you can raise your glass to the city that lies at your feet. They will highlight its spectacular spa, and its 5,000-square-metre space for hosting events. They will point out that it was home to the first STK restaurant: a steakhouse bringing together the cuisines of an entire hemisphere via its meat and seafood... All this is great, but nothing compares to actually living it. The feeling in each of the ME Miami suites is a kind of comfort that cannot be pigeonholed. They are luxurious, of

Do not think you are in one of those impersonal, pristine spaces where you would not dare leave a shirt lying around because you do not feel at home. The décor is exquisite, contemporary and unpretentious and makes you feel like you are the star. The furniture is the epitome of liveable elegance and the beds are designed not to impress, but to welcome and indulge you. From the Aura Studio to the mega ME Suite, the “maxi-bars”, the huge 48” LED television that would be perfect at home, and the free Wi-Fi… everything is there for you to make the most of your privacy and, at the same time, be connected to the world when you want to be.

Latin American art is a vital part of the daily life of this city, and the ME Miami’s Aura Manager is an expert in the field, ready to organise a tour for you to visit the art centres located around the hotel. One of the closest is the Perez Art Museum Miami or PAMM (1103 Biscayne Boulevard Miami) that transformed the city by breathing new life into the area known as Midtown. Its location next to the bay is as impressive as its modern architecture – designed by Herzog and De Meuron, the same Swiss architects who designed the Tate Modern in London. Remember, as Miami is a multicultural city, so is the hotel’s staff. They speak other languages in addition to English, Spanish, and Portuguese, and they know and understand their guests. When they suggest a place for tapas, to dance salsa or merengue, dine at a Cuban restaurant or somewhere with the best meat, they know what they are talking about. That is what happened with ME and STK Rebel – the hotel’s restaurant: a grill of the calibre of the best found in Buenos Aires or Bogotá, but in an ambiance designed to please those in search of the most refined cuisine. Its extensive and well-designed menu includes much more than meat, and it is different at lunch and dinner. If you are a calorie counter, there is something for you too, but if not go ahead and ask for the real deal. They also have a DJ, so good music is guaranteed as well. STYLE

TO HAVANA... BY CAR! If you are staying at the ME Miami, you can get to Havana for the weekend on a short 40-minute flight... or you can visit the local version of this Caribbean city with a short, five-minute car ride. This slice of urban life runs along Calle Ocho which, despite its fame, has little to do with the famous avenues that characterise other cities. This is a unique area – quintessentially Latin American and with deep roots in Cuba. On the 20 blocks from 7th Ave., along its 27 avenues in the city’s south-eastern section that is off Biscayne Bay – there are no skyscrapers or impressive architecture, but the people are happy to chat and are on first-name terms with everybody as if they were lifelong friends and address you as Mamacita or Papi followed by “What would you like for lunch today?” or “How are you coping with the heat?” The aroma of the darkest and most heavily sweetened coffee in the world is everywhere, plus there are things that you won’t find anywhere else, such as the typical Cuban guayaberas [light shirts] – in versions for today’s millennials – with designs for both women and men.The Hoy como Ayer club is another must-visit. It offers live music until dawn with “downloading” and jam sessions. This is a regular meeting point for artists from all over Latin America where they can improvise and get people to dance to Caribbean rhythms, Cuban son and the best salsa.A different tune is offered by the traditional music of the area which was heard on Calle Ocho long before it became like Havana. In the ‘50s, Ball & Chain was home to legends such as Billie Holiday, Count Basie and Chet Baker who strutted their stuff together with other talented, yet less wellknown musicians who were too inebriated to make it into the history books. This wonderful place is still here for the many

field that creates menus especially for dogs. This is what the ME Miami promises and delivers when you live, breathe and enjoy it. It is what they call “ME+ experience”, but I prefer to translate it as “ME makes people feel good”. From there you can go out and discover a city where so many things are going on that you’d better etch it all in your memory, layer by layer, just like those tiny grains of sand that you can never get out of your sandals no matter how many beaches you visit, how many lively nights out you enjoy, or how many kilometres of art, fairs and fashion you see. ASIAN ISLANDS
The latest innovative creation by Meliá’s Sol Hotels & Resorts brand has just been launched in Asia. In 2016, the vibrant Sol House Bali Legian and the Sol Beach House Phu Quoc for the young will open on two Southeast Asian islands that are ready to revolutionise the concept and philosophy of hotels. very much since Western hippies first set foot there. Those early travellers of the modern age were amazed at the incredible spirituality of these peoples and at the landscapes of unusual beauty. Even today, their exoticism seduces those who visit these coasts, the jungles or the temples of this corner of the world. Southeast Asia is a favourite destination for many – I include myself on the list – who go to countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam or Malaysia in search of heavenly beaches and first-class cuisine – and also in search of parties. expanses with DJs in the moonlight, but also untouched, isolated beaches scattered with coconut trees. Whatever your preferences, you will always find the right beach. Added to this is the deep communion of the inhabitants with everything natural, creating a perfect tandem. When in the West we were starting to make “organic”, “sustainable” and “natural therapies” fashionable, Asians had incorporated all these disciplines into their daily lives centuries ago. It is therefore not surprising that Meliá Hotels International has set off to these faraway places to open two new hotels under the Sol Hotels & Resorts Brand: one on the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc and another on the Balinese island of Legian.

According to Marta Camprubí – the company’s Marketing Manager for the Asia Pacific region – Phu Quoc, in Vietnam, has until quite recently been a little developed destination known mainly to backpackers. Its sandy, white beaches and crystal-clear waters are turning it into one of the newest beach destinations in Southeast Asia. “Phu Quoc is a pristine island that preserves the spirit of Asia with a touch of idyllic adventure found in a destination largely unexplored by travellers.” In contrast, as Camprubí explains, “Bali is a fully developed island with all the services that tourists could ask for. Besides, its vast size offers a broader diversity of landscapes, as well as spectacular nightlife,” adding, “although Bali could be regarded as a mature destination in Asia, there are still new places to explore, such as the area where the hotel is located.”

It is thanks to this set of values that Meliá crossed paths with UNICEF (the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund), or UNICEF with Meliá’s. In any event, Meliá and UNICEF began a partnership in 2003 to support UNICEF’s projects. Shortly thereafter, in 2006, Meliá became the first Spanish company to sign ECPAT, The Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism. In addition, this Spanish company has endorsed The United Nations Global Compact. More recently, in 2010, Meliá signed a strategic alliance with UNICEF and became the driving force within the tourism sector to support child protection and the fight against the commercial sexual exploitation of children.
