LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

W

elcome to the latest edition of MStyle, a magazine that we hope will entertain and inspire you whilst you relax at our idyllic resorts and vibrant urban hotels. One of the main concerns for the modern traveller is sustainability, and our guests are more aware than ever of the role we must all play in protecting our planet, while still enjoying the best possible holiday experience. That’s why sustainability plays a starring role in this issue, from our company’s commitment to eliminating single-use plastics from all of our hotels in 2018, to our partnership with Coca-Cola on the fantastic project ‘Mares Circulares’ (Circular Seas). You’ll also find out more about our new and environmentally conscious all-inclusive luxury brand, Paradisus by Meliá, in ‘The Observatory’. As in every edition, we cover all four continents where our hotels are located. In the Caribbean, we stop by the Paradisus Los Cayos on Cuba’s Cayo Santa María. Along with the magnificent The Grand Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real in Punta Cana, it’s one of Meliá’s most significant new openings in the region this year. This will be followed by the opening of the spectacular Paradisus Playa Mujeres in the first quarter of 2019, consolidating Meliá’s leadership in the Caribbean premium resorts sector. In Asia Pacific we visit the new Sol House Kuta Bali, and in Europe we present the incredible Calvia Beach The Plaza, a state-of-the-art hotel that’s the finishing touch on our extensive repositioning of Magaluf, a top European tourist destination. Our children’s entertainment programme, ‘Katmandu Adventures’, will excite visitors of all ages at our family-friendly resorts. We also dive into the fascinating world of art in our urban hotels, from the Innside hotel in New York to the design trends at the ME Milan Il Duca, and discover the most intriguing neighbourhoods of the Eternal City— with the palatial Gran Meliá Rome on the Colle del Gianicolo as our base. All of this is topped off with the latest culinary offerings available in our hotels, tips for organising successful meetings or conferences and even recommendations for your next golf trip. Whatever the reason for your visit, at Meliá Hotels International we always make sure that your time with us exceeds all expectations.

CHARO IZQUIERDO

How do you define Spanish fashion? Charo Izquierdo, current director of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Madrid and of various shows and events, has had a long and prestigious career—both in Spain and internationally—in the world of communication, fashion and beauty.

If this article were an Instagram Story, the answer would come in the form of a giant store on any significant shopping street around the world, with a neon caption and a single name: Zara. If this question were posed to international fashion design students, the answer would be a photograph of a haute couture design by Balenciaga. And yet, although both of these answers are fitting and accurate, the truth is that the stars of Spanish fashion can’t be easily condensed and summarised in one list, or even two—unlike the Ten Commandments. Spanish fashion is a collection of a great wealth of stories, many of them untold and unheard, that are full of creativity, passion and in many cases success. The fashion industry currently accounts for nearly three per cent of the Spanish GDP. Today, Spain’s greatest fashion groups and companies are making the ‘Spanish brand’ known around the world—and in the fashion industry, they find the very best thread with which to weave their identity. This isn’t just a metaphor, a literary analogy or wishful thinking; it’s a fact. As is this statistic: the exports of the Spanish clothing sector were worth 12.182 billion euros in 2017, according to FEDECOM. most similar to couture. HOSPITALITY FOR A BETTER WORLD

The Meliá group’s hotels around the world are looking for alternatives to replace plastic, such as glass cups and pitchers, as well as water dispensers.

THE END OF PLASTIC

Addressing an environmental emergency

THE END OF PLASTIC Text: ROSA MARQUÉS

Each year, 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in the sea instead of being recycled. Some of this waste takes up to 450 years to disappear, causing pollution throughout the entire decomposition process. By the end of this year, the MeliĂĄ group will have eliminated all single-use plastics from their hotels. We spoke to the CEO, Gabriel Escarrer, to learn about the significance of this inspiring and life-saving decision.

That said, we first addressed the role of tourism

single-use plastics by 2021—and prominent international

companies in the fight against climate change at the penultimate General Assembly of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). There I saw very clearly that Meliá, as an industry leader and a role model for many, needed to take its first decisive step towards eliminating non-reusable plastics.

COUNTRIES LIKE COSTA RICA—WHICH WANTS TO BAN ALL SINGLE-USE PLASTICS BY 2021—AND PROMINENT INTERNATIONAL COMPANIES LIKE MELIÁ HOTELS INTERNATIONAL HAVE ALREADY TAKEN ACTION.

To mention a piece of personal inspiration: both my family and I love to sail around the Mediterranean, where we live, and it’s devastating to think about the fact that our beautiful sea is filled, year after year, with plastic waste that not only spoils the sea and makes it dangerous to sail, but also pollutes and kills animals and plants. It threatens the whole biological pyramid that gives life to our seas, and thereby to all of us. Meliá has decided to eliminate non-reusable plastics throughout the whole value chain: bottles, glasses, bags, coasters, straws, etc. How do you plan to do this? Unlike other companies that have announced medium and longterm plans, our commitment is immediate (seeing as how we should have removed all singleuse plastics already by now). That’s why we’ve distributed a roadmap to all of our teams in both the hotels and the

Stock management doesn’t worry us, as we developed our plan well in advance—with the aim of complete elimination by the end of this year—and items are being replaced as the plastic stock is used up. How will you train hotel staff to explain this initiative to guests? We’re developing an internal communication plan to help us manage the ‘cultural change’ that this process will bring about, in order to encourage our employees to become ‘ambassadors’ for the programme. At the same time, this will help them learn how to explain and convey the programme and its advantages to our guests upon their arrival, or even before, in order to forestall and counteract any doubts or concerns guests may have. Above all, we’re relying on the basic premise that respecting the planet needs to be compatible with the best possible guest experience. So far, and with the initiatives we’ve already

We spoke to him about his beginnings and his collection.

orge Pérez is considered one of the most influential people in the North American art scene. In fact,

that after he donated 40 million dollars and his collection of modern art to the Miami Art Museum, it adopted his name. For the first time in the country’s history, Latino power became linked to philanthropy and art. We took advantage of Art Basel Miami Beach, the city’s premier annual art show, to speak with one of the most prominent people on the scene. At one point during our conversation, his wife Darlene (who’s involved in everything) slipped away to address an issue with a patient. A practising doctor, she has her own space in what was previously Jorge’s library/study. In addition to her day job, she plays a central role in running the family foundation. Jorge Pérez has created a world where business, philanthropy, art, family and life come together naturally. There’s a special balance in this home’s atmosphere that allows you to intuit the

I’m surrounded by fantastic pieces by artists including the likes of Alex Katz, Secundino Hernández, Antony Gormley, Cy Twombly, Damián Ortega and Kiki Smith. All of it seems to make sense here in Miami, a city destined to be the capital of Latin American art. This is what the Pérez Art Museum Miami is aiming for, my host tells me. Not all museums that are named after people belong to the Anglo-Saxon world. The man who lends his name to this one, which is housed in a beautiful building by Herzog & De Meuron, chats from the chair beside me, emanating a palpable love for life.

INTERVIEW

When did you propose that the museum take your name, a Latin American name? Talking to my family and friends about the donation, I realised that, even though Latinos have contributed so much to the development of the U.S., there aren’t any public buildings named after us. There’s the Guggenheim, Rockefeller, Tate, Phillips... so for me it was very important that Pérez, perhaps the most Latino name there is, be associated with patronage and philanthropy. I wanted people to see that Latinos have made money in the U.S. and that we want to give back by contributing to the community. Was it with ‘The Giving Pledge’ that you first felt ‘The Luck of Giving’, as I called it in my first book? I don’t think it was the first time. I’ve always been a giving person, someone very revolutionary. I was born in a society with a stark contrast between the rich and the poor, and have always wanted to do something about it. I’ve always thought that people with a lot of money should have the moral obligation to share it. I had that in mind when I started to build public housing—first for the government and later with my own company¬—for senior citizens with nowhere to live. They called me Jorgito, and the ones who are still alive continue to call me that even though I’m 68 years old! Of the various activities you sponsor through your foundation, which captivates you most? They ask me that at the museum, too. Art is like an orgasm: an exciting and transformative experience that should never be boring. If there’s one city that unites the abstract and the organic, the shiny severity of skyscrapers and the greatest cultural diversity on the planet, it's New York. This city, with its mild autumn temperatures, sends a burst of life through the veins of its most creative visitors.

SPECIAL BREAKFASTS

Starting the day off right

THE WORLD’S BEST BREAKFASTS For many people, breakfast is the most exciting part of staying at a hotel. It means getting up in the morning and starting the day with eggs Benedict, a fresh fruit salad or even an exotic treat that gives you added insight into the part of the world you’re visiting. Buffet, à la carte, continental, full English, healthy or brunch... the options are infinite, and the Meliá Hotels International around the world offer them all.

A

t Marga Coll’s restaurant, they call

it breakfast because it’s served in the morning, but considering the number of dishes it includes and its length—around two hours—it’s actually more of a lunch. And not just any lunch: it’s a complete culinary tour of the Balearic Islands. Marga, the Mallorcan chef and owner of the Miceli restaurant in Selva, is the master of ceremonies and cicerone of this journey through the island’s local products, recipes and traditional preparations. The five-part experience takes place in an unbeatable setting: the Hotel Gran Meliá de Mar’s terrace in Illetes, near Mallorca’s capital. Facing a gorgeous Mediterranean cove, it’s surrounded by pines and imbued with a refreshing sea breeze. It’s the perfect backdrop for this breakfast tasting menu, which starts with ‘a walk through the garden’ to gather seasonal fruits. They’re served in different textures, mixed into organic yoghurt from Sa Teulera (with apricots from Porreres) or squeezed into juice. The prized oranges of Sóller and the delicious Sa Pobla strawberries always have a place on the table, too. Bread takes centre stage in the second course. Whether white, brown or in the form of llonguets (crispy and fluffy rolls), it’s always fresh out of the oven, with that unmistakable aroma of Sunday mornings and holidays. It’s accompanied

by a selection of cheeses and cured meats, chosen by the restaurant and created by small local producers. They maintain the island’s tradition with products like salazones (delicious Menorcan cured fish and anchovies marinated in vinegar), homemade jams (featuring Sa Pobla strawberries, quince, bitter orange and more), creamy artisanal butter and, of course, extra virgin olive oil and ramallet tomatoes, to make the famous Mallorcan pamboli (toast with tomato, salt and olive oil). And, of course, a glass of cava to toast with; so Mediterranean! The next course also comes straight from the oven. First up is coca, a kind of pizza that’s very popular throughout the whole archipelago. Here it’s topped with trempó (a typical Mallorcan salad with onion, green pepper and tomato) This chef brings the essence of the Balearic Islands and their gardens, philosophy and recipes to life with her traditionally prepared dishes.

and roasted peppers. Next are delicious empanadas filled with beef, fish and sobrassada (cured sausage) with onion, paired with red wine. Every good breakfast includes eggs. In this case they’re free-range, served with Sa Pobla potatoes and topped with freshly shaved truffle. The journey ends with local pastries like the iconic Mallorcan ensaimada, quartos and cremadillos filled with cream and chocolate, leaving a sweet aftertaste. A tip: take it easy, breathe deep and ask for a doggy bag to relive the pleasures of this amazing breakfast later on.

The ingredients are cheap and they’re easy to make, but they’re also nutritious and full of flavour. They’ve existed throughout Shanghai for many years, and have become the classic breakfast foods. Where is it served? It’s served in the restaurant/bar area, and guests can also sit outside on the waterfront terrace. It’s only a 10-minute walk away, and it will give you an idea of the city’s mercantile history. You can also visit the nearby Harbor Bazaar museum, which displays curiosities that were brought in by sailors over the past few decades or even centuries ago. Or visit St. Nicholas’ Church, where you’ll find an interesting exhibition about the city’s destruction during the Second World War, as well as the world’s fifth-highest church tower, which offers an impressive view of Hamburg. If museums aren’t your thing, continue on towards the Landungsbrücken and watch all the ships come in. Walk through the old tunnel under the Elbe River and enjoy the best view of the city’s skyline from the opposite shore. On Sundays you can get up early to visit Hamburg’s famous fish market, where you can purchase almost anything (but mostly fish). Live music brings together merchants, tourists and the night owls who are having their final beers after a long night out on the legendary Reeperbahn. After visiting the fish market, you’ll still have enough time to enjoy your breakfast at the INNSIDE Hamburg Hafen.

Let your imagination run wild with

KATMANDU ADVENTURES! The Sol hotels’ new entertainment programme, Katmandu Adventures, has been launched in ten of the brand’s hotels this year. It emphasises the importance of imagination, fun and values to children through the mythical legend of ‘Desirata’, a jewel that allows whoever possesses it to travel through space and time, and its eternal guardian, Boro, who’s inspired by the Yeti. FAMILY HOLIDAYS

I

t's 10 a.m. and the guests filling the breakfast area

at Sol Barbados, in Mallorca, are in high spirits. Several families with children of all ages are gearing up for a day full of fun. They’ll head to the beach, the waterslides, the waterfalls and the hotel’s children's clubs, where the Katmandu Adventures programme comes alive in a magical place called the Enchanted Forest. Suddenly, two adorable characters, Boro’s niece and nephew, make their entrance in the breakfast area. Excited children run to take photos with them. Laughter, applause, nerves... Boro’s teen Yeti nephew, Kumar, and young Yeti niece, Maya, who live in the Enchanted

Forest, are affectionate and attentive. They smile as they greet everyone: ‘Koko!’ say the characters. ‘Koko!’ scream the children, who have been learning basic words in the Yeti language, Katlingo, since their first day. These small Yetis are the stars of 80% of the activities at the mini clubs (for children from 8 months to 10 years old), so this surprise is a delightful reunion. Giant muffins are served alongside fresh juices and toast, and breakfast becomes a true family affair.

That’s how the day begins at the ten Sol hotels where Katmandu Adventures has already been introduced: Sol Barbados, Sol Alcudia, Sol Calas Mallorca, Sol Príncipe, Sol Pelícanos, Sol Palmanova, Sol Lanzarote, Sol Falcó and Sol Milanos Pingüinos. ‘This year we’ve adapted the ages of the clubs to the mental ages of children today’, says Isabel González, Global Entertainment Director of the Meliá group. These are just some of the adjustments made after a year of testing in three pilot hotels.

FOR THE CHILDREN OF TODAY ‘Until last year, the age limit for the children’s clubs was 12. But, given the feedback from pilot hotels, and considering that children today mature early—by age 11 or 12 they’re essentially pre-teens—we have readjusted. Now, there are three mini clubs: the Dreamers, for children from 8 months to 4 years old; the Explorers, for children from 5 to 7; and the Rangers, for children from 8 to 10. Each age group has different activities based on the same topics: workshops, daily shows, surprises... all inspired by the mythology of

‘The premise of the design of this new entertainment programme is that children, above all, should have fun. However, safety and the dissemination of the Meliá group’s universal values are equally important to us’, adds Isabel González. ‘The idea is based on the Sol Katmandu Park & Resort, a successful family resort located in Mallorca with a perfectly integrated theme park’, explains Vallés. ‘The experience of working side by side with Katmandu Park was so positive that it influenced the activity schedule and children's entertainment programme in our Sol hotels, which have more of a family focus.

ACTIVITIES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY This year, with the programme already established in the brand’s ten hotels, there are some changes. ‘We’ve relied on recent studies that corroborate what we’ve observed, which is that the way families want to experience their holidays has radically changed. Before, parents wanted to rest while their children were entertained. Parents today, however, want to relax but also to spend time enjoying their holidays with their children’, explains Isabel González. ‘To implement this idea, we’ve created family time at the hotels; every day there are one or two activities where families can have fun together ’. Even though parents may not know what to do with their children, the hotels organise daily family activities in great detail, creating moments that are not only positive for the children, but also help parents feel closer to them. Among the numerous benefits cited in the most recent studies on this subject are: promoting children’s

Among its amenities are a private check-in area, special rooms with facilities and services for the whole family and an entertainment programme that’s suitable for all ages. ‘Our Kids & Co club is ideal for parents seeking some rest and relaxation. Leave your child at the dedicated area, and a staff member will keep them entertained with games, drawing and arts & craft workshops. LIFT UP YOUR SPIRIT WITH ART Art lovers will enjoy the Le Dame Art Gallery, a permanent hotel exhibition featuring an inspiring collection of contemporary art from emerging artists. The collection is exhibited in the lobby and The Level Lounge, and has been a top spot in the neighbourhood for several years. ‘The Dame Art Gallery has grown significantly over the last five years’, explains Camarlinghi. ‘It first started as a means of social responsibility, and is part of Meliá’s goal of offering a programme of cultural events, working on community projects and enhancing the guest experience’. Recently, the artwork has expanded into other areas of the hotel. ‘The collection now occupies many public areas Top, the Dry Martini lounge by Javier de las Muelas, with a range of exclusive cocktails. Together with Le Dame Art Gallery, the Meliá White House also plays host to ARTROOMS, an international art fair that’s now in its fifth year. ‘ARTROOMS is an interactive showcase of today’s most thoughtprovoking, mind-bending and awe-inspiring artists. It is the first art fair to offer free exhibition space to independent artists. Each artist takes over a bedroom, which becomes their own space to develop for the duration of the event. The fair attracts exhibitors and guests from around the world, and creates a platform to celebrate differences through art’.

While nature is ‘in the DNA of Paradisus’, sustainability is one of the features of its new brand vision—the motto of which is ‘Nature Included’. In addition to always opting for architecture that’s integrated into the landscape and low in height, Paradisus also encourages the use of environmentally friendly materials and more responsible energy use. ‘We’ve eliminated much of the stationery and paper from the rooms, and now communicate information in a digital format through the Meliá app or the information channel on TVs in the bedrooms. You always pack snacks in your luggage, right? (Laughing) I always bring food, yes. Since becoming vegan, I have to make sure there’s something for me to eat. For lunch and dinner, I know that you can always get grilled vegetables, or something like that, in Spain. But for breakfast, which is vital for me, not all hotels offer tasty vegan options. And what do you think of Meliá’s commitment to replacing single-use plastics? It’s great. It’s essential. I think that every industry needs to start becoming more conscious and contributing more, in its own way. Going into 2019, one of your dreams is coming true: shooting with Juan José Campanella. Yes. Son of the Bride is one of my favourite films, so filming with Campanella is a dream come true. The Weasels is a remake of an Argentine film called Yesterday’s Guys Used No Arsenic, and it’s coming out in May. Where else can we see you? Gente que viene y ¡bah! (‘People Who Come Along and, Pff!’) is also coming out at the beginning of next year. It’s another film that has a special place in my heart. The shoot was magical and a great experience; super fun. We filmed it in Barcelona. And you’re continuing your wonderful work with your foundation, Ochotumbao. Yes, we’re actually a fundraising organisation for other charities or NGOs that work with people, animals or the environment. ere in Mallorca, it’s just like a cartoon:

there may be a cloud over your head, but the sun is never far away. It’s an amazing microclimate’, says Esperanza, smiling from ear to ear. She’s one of the cheerful and good-natured staff members at the new Calviá Beach The Plaza, located just a few metres from the crystal-clear sea. It’s one of those rare hotels that practically hum with positive energy—and it’s infectious. Sure enough, less than two minutes later the clouds give way to radiant sunshine. Light streams into the lobby, where stacks of design books are just waiting to be perused. A young, cool and attractive crowd—some alone, some with children—from all over the world stand in a small queue at reception. It moves so quickly that, before we know it, we’ve checked in and slipped on that famous bracelet, renowned for its versatility and ease. With a quick touch of the bracelet, you can make purchases at some of the shops and dining options in the square, and all of the Meliá hotels scattered across Magaluf. And on top of that, it’s also your room key. With this bracelet, there’s no need to carry cash; it’s great! MODERNITY IN ITS DNA ‘It’s the resort of the future for trendy and well-travelled people’, says the hotel’s General Manager, Rubén Llach, as I chat with him and sip on an insanely delicious Mojito Café, made of coffee, white rum, mint, lime and crushed ice— an unusual but tasty concoction whose flavours gradually meld together as you drink it. He then pulls out his phone and plugs it into a device that lets guests charge any kind of mobile on all of the rooftop tables. ‘It's a power bank, which also has commercial information about the hotel and announces upcoming events’, he explains with that genuine cheerfulness that seems to be de rigueur for all the staff, from the hotel manager to every last waiter. I’m starting to fantasise about staying here for good and setting up my office. You can see the attention to detail everywhere; from the straws we’re sipping this sweet nectar through (made of cardboard, not plastic) to the soft beat of the mellow background music that makes everything seem so easy.

TODAY’S FAMILIES IN THE SQUARE In fact, the surrounding area has been completely rejuvenated. When the sun starts to set and I decide to leave my oasis, the first thing I spot is an Italian ice cream parlour and café in the square, where I can admire the pool from below. I can’t resist a taste, and it turns out to be the best pistachio ice cream I’ve ever had: another holiday pleasure to add to my rapidly growing list of bon vivant indulgences, and one that I’ll return to more than once. As I enjoy my ice cream, I notice that nobody is able to walk through the square without stopping to take a photo of the pool up above. As they pass by, the space comes alive with families, children, tourists, groups of friends out shopping and happy couples, who come to have a snack at the Urban Food stands. There are games for kids in the middle of the square, including giant board games, building blocks, reading areas, tipi tents, hands-on activities and arts and crafts. ‘We organise these games so that families can play together here in the square’, one of the Món de Colorins lads tells me. The company has set up a huge outdoor play area by the Momentum Plaza shopping centre as part of their backto-school campaign, which offers an exciting programme of events throughout autumn and winter. ‘We’ll be holding Zumba, yoga and spinning classes in

‘IT’S THE RESORT OF THE FUTURE FOR TRENDY AND WELL-TRAVELLED PEOPLE’.

the mornings and afternoons, as well as cooking, theatre and crafts workshops for kids’, says Pilar Bouza, head of programming at the new shopping centre, as she checks that everything is in order. All kinds of events and special days will be celebrated here in October. After Halloween, it’s non-stop up until Christmas, when the whole square will be adorned with decorations including a classic Christmas tree. The Three Wise Men will even walk through the square to collect children’s letters.

‘This hotel is the cherry on top of the Meliá group’s

ilan has been transforming over the

past few years—a truly exceptional feat for a European city. This momentum began with the Expo 2015, and continues today through significant, forward-looking development programmes. The fields of design and architecture are two of the most visible and important driving forces behind this transformation. Architects like Stefano Boeri and Michele De Lucchi, along with those from outside of Italy like Herzog & de Meuron, Rem Koolhaas and Chipperfield, have created endowments and constructed new museums, concert halls, houses and office buildings that have transformed the very core of the city, even extending to its skyline. Without question, the city continues to be one of the international capitals of fashion and, consequently, of design. Little by little, it’s becoming a magnet for

contemporary art, with new galleries, exhibition centres like the HangarBiccoca and foundations such as the Fondazione Prada sprouting up around the city. The cultural calendar covers the entire year, and can even be a little overwhelming. In recent years, the levels of tourism related to shopping and culture in the city have doubled. Visitors are drawn to new and evolving culinary ventures, classical music at La Scala and other prestigious institutions and the city’s fundamental pillars: its fashion weeks and the Salone fair, dedicated to interior design, furniture and lighting.

ME MILAN IL DUCA, A CENTRE OF OPERATIONS The Me Milan Il Duca is a local point of reference, having established itself as a kind of launch pad in Milan. Here you can remain immersed in the world of design as you plan out your schedule, and its exceptional location makes it easy to access all the city’s events. Its location in the Piazza della Repubblica, next to the Brera neighbourhood, is within walking distance of all the central spots. The views from the rooftop terrace are spectacular. Enjoy Milan’s best cocktails at the Radio Rooftop Bar, and admire the city’s new architectural style in the nearby Garibaldi district.

The hotel first opened as a result of the Expo 2015, and soon became a local institution as well as an icon of architecture and design. Alvaro Sans, who carried out the remodelling, proposed a project that honoured the original design, which was the work of the great Italian architect Aldo Rossi. Rossi, born in 1931, won a Pritzker Prize in 1990 for his influential career in architecture. Often described as ‘a poet who also happens to be an architect’, Rossi was also an industrial designer who developed interesting pieces of furniture for Artémide and Molteni & C. Since opening, the hotel has been likened to a veritable museum of the history of Italian design. EXPERIENCE MILAN THROUGH HOUSE MUSEUMS Two house museums represent the essence of life in Milan during the 1930s: a glorious era in an industrial and cultured past, when contemporary art, advanced architecture and design were integrated into the houses of successful professionals and businessmen. Villa Necchi [13] is a functionalist project by the architect Piero Portaluppi that contains 130 extraordinary pieces of art. The collection ranges from the 18th century—including works by artists Canaletto, Tiepolo and Rosalba Carriera—to French furniture, Lombard ceramics and Chinese porcelain. Villa Borsani [14] has just opened its doors to the public. It’s the former residence of the architect and designer who founded the TECNO furniture manufacturing company. Its treasures include collaborations with Lucio Fontana, Pomodoro and the great Italian designers of the 1940s and ‘50s. Since October 6th to January 10th, don´t miss the exhibition "A Castiglioni", a unique monographic dedicated to Achille Castiglioni in the 100 aniversary of his birth, curated by Patricia Urquiola, the prestigious Spanish designer.

This Indonesian paradise is now famous for its music, dance and natural beauty. Just over three decades later, the company has four resorts on the island and eight others spread throughout the country. They’re proof that its infatuation with Indonesia in the 80s wasn't just a momentary whim or a passing passion, but a lasting love affair with a long journey ahead of it. In fact, it continues to grow; Meliá Hotels International’s expansion hasn’t stopped since then, in either Bali or the rest of the Asia-Pacific region. Andrea Barbi, Asia-Pacific Marketing & PR Manager, explains: ‘In the next three years we expect to open eight hotels in the area, including the Meliá Bandung Dago, Gran Meliá Bintan, Meliá Bintan, Meliá Ubud and Meliá

Known for its waves, sunsets (which are said to be some of the best in the world) and infinite nightlife, Kuta beach is a true paradise for travellers in search of fun. It was selected as the location for Sol House’s second hotel on the island, the Sol House Bali Kuta resort. ‘Bali is a destination for people with a youthful and adventurous spirit, who want to enjoy their free time under the sun—which fits perfectly with the Sol House brand’, says Barbi. From the Matahari Kuta Square and the traditional market to the Waterbom park (a local institution and an essential stop if you’re travelling with children) and the Discovery Shopping Mall (not to mention the Sol House Bali Legian), all of the attractions in Kuta—Bali’s top tourist destination—are right around the corner from the Sol House Bali Kuta. By staying here, you’re guaranteed to get the most out of your holiday.

GUIDE FOR VISITING KUTA When to go: Although it’s always a good time to visit Kuta, the dry season is best, between June and September. There’s less humidity, and it’s the perfect time to go scuba diving, surfing and snorkelling. What to eat: Indonesian food is a mix of different cuisines from nearby regions like Malaysia, China and southern India, with some European influences. Spices play a starring role, with ingredients like sambal, tamarind, turmeric, raw chillies and coconut milk taking centre stage. Some standout dishes are Nasi Goreng, a kind of fried rice with chicken, prawns, egg and spices, and Gado Gado salad, topped with steamed vegetables and peanut sauce. What to visit: There’s plenty to do in Kuta beyond the beach. Discover its architectural and cultural heritage at the Leeng Gwan Kuta Temple, which is over two centuries old. Or visit the tomb of Mads Lange—a 19th-century Danish explorer—on Jalan Tuan Lange, one of the most historic spots on the island. You might also want to stop by the Bali Sea Turtle Society, a conservation group that works to rescue turtles. What to buy: Kuta is the perfect place to go shopping, and the great Beachwalk Shopping Centre has everything, from international brands to typical Indonesian textiles and even local art. If you’re looking for something different and unique, check out Upcycle, which helps support the community by selling items made from recycled materials.

PHOTO: A.G.E.

A new addition: In a few months, the Sol House Bali Kuta resort will be joined by the Sol House Jimbaran, the third of the brand’s hotels in Bali. It’s a newly constructed condo hotel complex with 178 rooms, expected to open this summer.

Trastevere and Campo de’ Fiori are some of the most authentic neighbourhoods in Rome and walking through them will make you feel like a real Roman. With the Gran Meliá Villa Agrippina serving as a starting point for these strolls (and many more), you’re sure to make everlasting memories of the Eternal City.

Even so, the Romans themselves say that it’s the soul of the city, and once you’ve crossed its main bridges a few times you’ll understand why. Roman bridges, emblematic of the empire’s practical feats, thread together so many of ancient Europe’s landscapes. And despite their age, you’ll find them familiar: what European doesn’t know of a Roman bridge close to their city or town? But you don’t have to cross any bridges to enjoy a peaceful walk along the banks of Rome’s river, leading you from the Gran Meliá Villa Agrippina to Trastevere. ETERNAL CITY Text: VICKY VÍLCHES

A

may be a surprising combination, but it’s certainly a very pleasant one, especially in the spring and summer when the heat suffocates Rome. After a long day of getting lost in the city’s streets, it’s lovely to take a dip in the pool and relax on a lounger. Finding yourself in a bubble of paradise away from the commotion and tourists, yet still steps away from the centre of one of the most beautiful cities in the world, is truly unique. That's the Agrippina’s year-round allure. There’s no other luxury hotel in all of Rome where you can enjoy breakfast in a garden of lemon trees, walk to the Vatican in five minutes, admire the Sistine Chapel and then retire to a five-star hotel for a delicious dip in a pool with views over the Castel Sant'Angelo, followed by a rest on a Balinese bed surrounded by pines and fruit trees. With places like this, you can dare to visit the Eternal City on even the warmest Ferragosto.

The RedLevel Grand Suite has 360º views of Rome.

The hotel is close by the Vatican, in fact, and this advantageous location is another major part of its allure. ‘With the Vatican on one side and lively Trastevere on the other, guests can visit many of the most interesting parts of the city on foot, which is definitely part of our unfaltering appeal’, explains Francesco Ascani, General Manager of the hotel. ‘If our guests don’t feel like doing something touristic, the hotel also offers many dining options, or they can choose to simply relax in this exclusive atmosphere right in the heart of the Eternal City’, he adds. The Gran Meliá Rome Villa Agrippina also offers exclusive RedLevel services. The hotel reflects all the historical and artistic wealth of its surroundings, while using art to tell its own stories. Beams, floorboards and carefully chosen fabrics create a simultaneously warm and modern atmosphere. The Villa Agrippina’s best suites are the highest in the city, and they definitely have the most spectacular views. Their terraces are more than 100 metres long, and let you enjoy the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica as well as the unforgettable views from the Gianicolo Hill viewpoint. The water of the Tiber flows alongside the hotel, and is present throughout the property. It’s there in the large 200-square-metre pool heated to 22 degrees all year round, as well as the open-air hydro-massage pool heated to 30 degrees, which is found by the entrance to the famous spa. With these installations, the hotel truly reflects the important culture of the Roman baths, as well as the city’s cultural and historical heritage. Some of the suites have their own Jacuzzi and hydro-massage baths on their terraces. And you can always recharge your batteries at the My Blend by Clarins spa with its tempting range of treatments, including facials, body treatments and relaxing and revitalising massages to restore your energy, so you can keep exploring the city the next day. Cuisine is an important, if not integral, part of travelling to Italy. Naturally, Ossimoro, the hotel restaurant, dishes out the very best Mediterranean dishes. When dusk falls, make sure to enjoy a cocktail at the hotel’s lively bar, Amaro, or at one of the terraces with views over the city, where you can watch the dramatic colours of the sunset before going for a stroll along the banks of the Tiber. Finish off the evening by taking a walk to the Piazza Navona or the lively neighbouring area of Trastevere, or stay and restore your strength for the following day. Thanks to the Meliá’s activity programme, you can even have a private tour of the Vatican—something truly exclusive and unforgettable. The experienced guest relations team can organise a private visit for you or your group, led by an art historian, to some of the most interesting parts of Vatican City, including the incredible Sistine Chapel. It’s a truly unique experience that will stay with you forever.

B

uenavista Golf, an 18-hole golf course designed by Seve Balles-

teros in 2003, turned 15 this year. In celebration, the third Seve Ballesteros Memorial Tournament was held from the 11th to the 13th of May, in partnership with the Meliá Hacienda del Conde. This weekend of competition has already become one of the Canary Islands’ major golfing events. Featuring the second Canaries vs. UK Ryder Cup, a Pro-Am and an Amateur tournament, this year’s event culminated with the customary gala dinner, with performances by international tenor Celso Albelo and soprano Davinia Rodríguez. ‘We are really proud to see that, with the third edition of the Seve Ballesteros Memorial Tournament, the event has cemented its spot on Tenerife’s sporting and social calendars, helping our unique and distinctive resort become a destination in its own right. beautiful environment, the resort is the perfect place for a golfing trip or a wellness retreat, where guests can connect with the local culture and traditions’, noted Juan José Moreno, General Manager of the Meliá Hacienda del Conde hotel. With this event, the Buenavista Golf course and the Meliá Hacienda del Conde honour Seve Ballesteros’ golfing achievements. As in previous years, €10 of each registration fee was donated to the Seve Ballesteros Foundation.

ince opening in January 2018, the Meliá Serrano hotel’s new

culinary concept has been a resounding success. The restaurant offers an abundance of gourmet products, a cocktail bar and an interior terrace. It’s based on an updated version of traditional Spanish cuisine, and draws inspiration from the most iconic literature of the Spanish culinary consciousness: from the writings of Marquesa de Parabere, Simone Ortega and Mayte Commodore to recipes from the various volumes of the Salvat Encyclopedia of Cooking. It aims to transform traditions rooted in Spanish culture into new trends in fine dining, combining local ingredients with a sophisticated, modern and comfortable space. The restaurant places special emphasis on tradition, culture and the land. It’s a culinary experience that reminds us of the flavours of yesteryear, and renews them in a contemporary setting. Arado Grocery & Restaurant offers a complete lifestyle experience, with meetings, conversation, cocktails, relaxation, events, entertainment, leisure and culinary journeys. dining concept means that you can eat at any time. Inspired by its location, it reclaims the iconography of Madrid’s Salamanca neighbourhood, from its stately doorways to its prestigious churches and schools, not to mention its mansions, hunting shops and luxury shopping spots.
