MARMORA


About. This project had two key objectives. The first was to see if, through collaboration with stonework craftsmen, this traditional art form could be enriched with modern design techniques. Second, as a result of a research project focusing on stonework, an object, collection, or product would be created to showcase this type of crafting. The project was divided into stages. In the first stage, a study on stonework was undertaken to learn about the different materials, tools, and techniques. Afterwards, the practical uses of this art form were studied. This included locating the different kinds of workable stone found in the Mexican state of Jalisco. In the last stage, a field study with a selection of different workshops was created to chose a collaborating artisan for the project. The collaborating artisan, Mr. José Guadalupe Duarte, works with marble. After researching the material it was

decided to focus on texture variation as a key aspect of this project. The central concept for this project was “time”. Time allows us to observe changes in the physical world, while stone remains almost completely intact over long periods. As a design project, Marmora focuses on this aspect by interpreting the concept of time through marble working. Marmora is an ash urn representing the life of the deceased. In saying goodbye, we leave behind the physical being, but keep a spiritual memory of our loved ones. It pays homage to the life of the deceased by representing their childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old-age through the different textures of marble. Symbolically, the use of a timeless and lasting material such as marble to interpret the stages of life brings a sense of immortality to the memory of the deceased.

ARTISIAN WORKSHOP.


STONES. Stone carving is a very old tradition in Mexico, and dates back to the pre-colonial era. The Jalisco area in particular is very rich in minerals, and many different stones are mined or quarried. The most common stone in the area is tuff. The colour coded map below shows the different types of stone concentrations in the Jalisco area.

PAPIROSA


About. Papirosa is an experimental project using alternative materials for jewellery. It is the result of transforming and manipulating paper. Blocks of paper were assembled to give them the physical properties of a stronger material such as wood. Inspired by the Glasswinged Butterfly, reinforced paper wings were placed on silver rings, with more detailed work being laser cut.

DRESSABLE


About. This project was the result of collaborative work with the Dressable App start-up. Working as community manager, this project focused on the creation of digital publicity such as banners and signs for events that promoted the app.

GRADUTATION RING


About. This ring represents the principal object which designers use to project their creativity and imagination, the pencil. The objective was to design a graduation ring and sell it to at least five graduating students of that year. This was a team project in collaboration with Omar Aviles and Gabriela Avelar. Apart from assisting in design and brand development, a significant personal contribution to this project was in leading 3D software modeling (Rhinoceros). The two principal materials of the ring are used to represent different characteristics of working as a professional designer. The diamond symbolizes the precision and detail that a designer must have to complete a job impeccably, while the metal symbolizes the strength and resilience that a good designer will need throughout their professional life.

KOENA


About. The objetive of this project was to create a functional surfboard from scratch, along with a conceptual surf brand. This project was a colaboration with Virna Cazares. Koena is a brand of boards designed for women who are novice surfers, with the purpose of facilitating the learning of the sport; the logo represents a balance between masculinity and femininity. The design is a fusion of a “fun” board and a “malibu” board, making it a hybrid. It is sufficiently thin so as to feel the waves, while its width is designed to give the user more stability. The board’s characteristics are made to increase functionality: the edges and the tail are rounded to decrease resistance and give more maneuverability while a pad and leash were added for safety. The board also has three fins, giving it a very high level of stability.

ORBITAL SANDER


About. The Stihl Orbital Sander was made to supply a design tool that does not currently exist in the STIHL catalogue, but that is functional and represents characteristics of the STIHL brand. This project was headed by professors Claudio Monterrubio and Christian Mendoza. Creation of the Orbital Sander was based on a product analysis to identify the needs of the potential user base. This, and a subsequent user investigation, led to the following conclusions: • Users with no previous power tool experience expressed concern with tool vibration and how to hold the tool. • 30% of users felt unsafe in using the tool due to excess vibration both in handling the tool and the material being worked on.

• The handle must have a specific design to emphasize its function. • The handle must be ergonomic by incorporating a plastic grip in the final design. • The tool must incorporate a visibly safe design by having a guard that covers the sanding area. • The tool must incorporate a quality design that strategically uses materials and colours. • The location of buttons must be in a key area that is easy to locate. • The dust collection tray must be easy to clean with rigid materials. • The tool must have a single button for its operation.

• The principal use of the sander both in casual users and expert users is in finishing wood products.

• The location of the dust collection tray and the sanding area must be designed to minimize the risk of dust fires.

Based on these findings, a list of design requirements for the finished product were created.

• The body of the tool must be well ventilated to allow good airflow inside the tool.

• The tool must weigh between 300g and 500g.

• The colours of the tool must represent the STIHL brand as it relates to household tools.

• Vibration of the tool would be minimized through internal symmetry which minimizes destabilizing movements.

• The tool must be designed following the standards of the STIHL brand.

SKETCHING.


3D MODELING AND MANUFACTURE. Based on the characteristics of STIHL products and the design requirements mentioned in the previous section, a concept was developed for the design of an orbital sander. This led directly to preliminary design sketches and the selection of a final design. Over a hundred sketches were used to create the final design. For this project, an existing orbital sander was purchased and the internal components were rearranged to fit the new design. First, all the internal components of the purchased sander were modelled on CAD software (Solid Works), which ensured a functioning internal mechanism for the new design. Based on the layout of the internal components, the body of the sander was modelled. The new body had to support the interior components, such as the motor, buttons, and power cord, as well as having to conform to the design requirements from the user investigation.

The body of the orbital sander was printed with ABS plastic, which was chosen for its durability. Afterwards, a finishing treatment of sanding, resurfacing and painting was given to the body. This process was repeated several times to give the body a finished, polished look. The upper body was then painted with STIHL’s characteristic orange colour, and for a non-slip design, black matte paint was used on the handle. The letters of the STIHL logo were detailed by hand in black paint, and the bottom part of the sander was painted in matte white paint. The dust collector was painted in matte black. The final part of the process consisted of assembling the different parts. This was aided by using an expanded view of the parts as a guide (image on next page).


The STIHL Orbital Sander has 20 parts in total, meeting all of its original design requirements. Furthermore, as a study project the sander was first in its class and worked perfectly in applied testing.


ART DECO COLLECTION


About. The objective of this project was to learn how to represent an existing brand. This was done by creating a fictional scenario in which students were employed by a selected brand to develop a specific collection for their catalogue. The brand chosen for this assignment was Vrai & Oro, a luxury brand located in Los Angeles, California, and known for its minimalist design and also for developing affordable fine jewellery with retail prices 8 - 10 times lower than traditional jewellery retail brands. This project was influenced by the style and character of the Vrai & Oro brand line of jewellery, employing the minimalist style of the brand and the use of precious metals. Based on the criteria of the brand and the art-deco theme, a collection of six pieces was designed which are divided in two sets made up of a collar, a ring, and a broche.

PACKAGING.


Commercial kiosk


About. This project was based on designing a modular commercial mall kiosk for Alfredo’s Croissants. The mall selected for the kiosk was Arboledas Mall in Guadalajara, Mexico, which caters to a predominantly upper-middle class clientele.

The requirements for the kiosk were that it must:

• Be designed to maintain efficiency of tray movement and product replacement during times of high sales.

• Be able to store up to 15 boxes of product out of sight from customers. • Be able to store a fire extinguisher and emergency kit, as well as having room for an antibacterial gel dispenser. • Be able to exhibit up to 160 breads, protected from dust and air. • Be easily transportable. • Be modular or able to disassemble with relative ease. • Be able to connect to electricity. • Illuminate the bread on display. • Have an area for the employee to keep their personal belongings. • Have an easily accessible area to store tongs, bags and napkins. • Be able to display the product in an attractive manner. • Be designed in an aesthetically

• Have room for a small safe. • Have room for three levels of trays.

Based on these requirements, the initial design solutions proposed to the client were: • Sliding doors, which would maximize the use of internal space for storage while lowering construction material costs. • Four independent structures that would combine to form the completed kiosk, which would create a modular design that could be rearranged at will and that independently are easily transportable. • A functional design incorporating a specific area for packaging the product, with a drawer that functions as a cash drawer. • Display trays with a capacity of 12 breads per tray, with an exhibit size of 192, 144 or 96 breads. • Enough space for displaying the menu, logo and antibacterial gel.

EVOLUTION. After several meetings, the client agreed to one of the design options presented to them. The client also decided that the final design would need to incorporate a support within the product display for the trays. These renders show in detail the modular options presented to the client. The client’s design selection was based on the double counter module as well as a display module with support for double trays.



EJIDO CAOBAS


About. The objective of this project was to increase the economic sustainability of product lines associated with with CONAFOR (The National Forestry Commission of Mexico), as well as to design and develop products to be created in series, increasing the efficiency and profitability of production chains. This product line incorporates diverse themes such as family, entertainment, souvenirs, health, medicine and recreation. The variety of products is directed at different markets, but they share the same essence: of providing functional, quality products in a production chain that adds value to the raw materials furnished by Ejido Caobas, benefiting the ejido and bringing international recognition to Mexican design and raw materials. An “ejido� such as Caobas is an area of communal land use for agriculture, in which community members individually farm designated areas and maintain communal holdings. Ejido Caobas is characterized for growing high quality mahogany, which was used in the design and development of these products. This project was done in collaboration with Laura Rivapalacio and Virna Cazares.

SKETCHING AND MANUFACTURE.


COLMENA. Product made from solid mahogany, with biodegradable finishes. Colmena is an insect trap designed to prevent the transmission of Dengue disease by mosquitoes, as it holds a mixture of water and yeast in the interior which creates carbon dioxide, attracting mosquitoes and trapping them inside.

RULETA MEXICANA. Six piece drinking game made from solid mahogany and biodegradable finishes that fosters a social atmosphere through mexican symbols and traditions, such as tequila, an alcoholic beverage from Jalisco, Mexico. With the use of the game chips, a random shooter is selected which must be drunk without knowing the contents. One of the shooters contains pure tequila and the others a non-alcoholic beverage.
