President’s Letter
Welcome to Planned Giving Round Table of Arizona’s 28th Annual Planned Giving Conference! It’s been a wild ride these past couple of years, but through it all, PGRTAZ has stayed true to our mission: to educate, motivate, and empower our community to collectively promote and facilitate planned giving. After hosting our last two conferences online, we’re thrilled to see you again in person. We would like to express our sincere thanks to our event partner, Arizona Community Foundation, and to all of this year’s conference partners, for your generous financial support. Please be sure to visit their vendor tables and spend time getting to know our partners throughout the day. We also want to thank the PGRTAZ board and committee members for your many hours of hard work to make this year’s conference a success, and especially to the Program Committee for recruiting an incredible line-up of speakers, the Marketing Committee for getting the word out, the Partnership Committee for securing the underwriting to make it possible, and to the Conference Steering Committee for pulling everything together. Thanks to Stephanie Weadock with Premium Organization for keeping things organized and running smoothly for the conference and throughout the year. PGRTAZ has exciting things in store! We’re putting the finishing touches on the 2022-2023 season of monthly programs. And coming soon, we will launch our new brand, as PGRTAZ becomes “Arizona Charitable Gift Planners.” Today you are among the first to get a peek at our new logo. We hope you enjoy spending the day with fellow gift planners, advisors, and our guest speakers, and come away feeling energized and inspired about the opportunities gift planning can bring to your organizations, your clients and your donors. Brad Harris, CFRE, CAP® PGRTAZ President
Lori Shepherd, CFRE, CAP® Conference Steering Committee Chair

How to Give to Charity…Without It Costing You (Or Charity) Anything Peer-Reviewed “Optimized CLAT” Returns Donation (Or Perhaps More) Back to Donor After Several Years…And Provides a Larger Gift to Charity
Donor A - $1M Cash Gift to Charity Donor A makes a cash gift of $1M to charity (or a charitable donor advised fund). Donor A receives a $1M tax deduction…but nothing else in return. Tax Deduction $ Paid to Charity $ Back to Donor $1M $1M ----Donor B - $1M Gift to Optimized CLAT Donor B transfers $1M into the Optimized CLAT (which operates much like a regular investment account set up with his investment advisor, but with a “Lock-Up Period” where the funds can’t be withdrawn for some time). Donor B receives an immediate $1M tax deduction (like Donor A above). However, Donor B doesn’t give anything away to charity quite yet; instead, he remains in control of investing the full $1M (which will be returned to him later). To enjoy the tax deduction, the Tax Code requires Donor B to make annual payments from the account to any non-profits or charities selected by Donor B (including a donor advised fund)…much like receiving a tax deduction for giving charity an “I.O.U.” The donor selects the number of years to spread out the annual payments; however, the Tax Code requires that the payments must total $1M…plus a little bit more (to compensate charities for having to wait for the donation) based on the IRS-set interest rate in effect when the account is funded (which is currently near an all-time low). After making all payments, the remaining investments in the account are paid back to Donor B. To maximize the time that the $1M can appreciate and grow, Donor B selects a 20-year charitable payment term (“Lock-Up Period”), but with small payments to charity in the earlier years. As indicated on the following Payment Schedule, Donor B enjoys the same $1M tax deduction as Donor A. However, Donor B receives back ~$2M and charity receives ~$1.3M. Both Donor B and charity benefit tremendously. Tax Deduction $ Paid to Charity $ Back to Donor $1M $1.3M $2M Additional Benefits: (i) account may be funded with up to 30% of annual income, every single year, as a retirement strategy, (ii) account assets are immediately protected from creditors (& divorce, if single when funded), (iii) remaining account assets may be gifted to family, free of gift/estate taxes, and (iv) no limit on length of Lock-Up Period (the longer, the greater the potential benefits). Considerations: (i) Donor B cannot withdraw assets from account until end of Lock-Up Period, (ii) Donor B pays taxes on income generated inside account (like typical investment account)
