About the city Starting out in Chicago, Illinois, Powell’s was found by Michael Powell in 1970. It was a bookstore that specialized in used, rare, and discounted books primarily academic and scholarly by nature. Powell’s Books is now a chain of bookstores in Portland, Oregon, and its surrounding metropolitan

MISSION Serene. Silent. In the aftermath of an earthquake, you see the damage, how buildings collapse. But yet it’s quiet, as if the storm has passed. There’s a sense of relief and calming that the event is over and all that is left is damage.
The new Powell’s City of Books is going to be all about providing book buyers with a chic and modern experience.

CAFETERIA
The space planning intent was to have every area be adjacent to or at least in close proximity to one another. The public gathering places are away from workareas as to not distract workers from the foot traffic.

FURNITURE SELECTION
“Unite the world through play .” Challenge Everything
Using playful, bright colors, the furniture selection reflects the company. Steelcase seating, benching, and desks were used.

Furniture Design
Design Problem
Fifty-three percent of employees are disturbed by others when trying to focus. Forty-two percent end up making their own makeshift solutions to block our distractions. The objective is to create a solution in which these problems are no longer a concern in the modern workplace. Inspiration & Caes Study Crystals and irregularity
DESIGN SOLUTION Create a private, enclosed destination location where people in the workplace can escape to focus. Meant as a temporary location , this enclosure houses a custom made corian desk. This desk is wrapped with an LED light and is custom designed to fit the dimensions of an average person comfortably.
The materials were chosen specifically to ensure that the space does not feel too enclosed or heavy.
Paper, Printer, Plus Hotel Merchandise
Objective Working in teams of two, develop two wallpaper samples, a sculptural lighting installation, and tile tesselation. The inspiration for all should come from geometries and systems in nature which will be used to be part of the overall hotel design. In collaboration with: Julienne Barrett
INSPIRATION The overall inspiration began with the ocean. The form and qualities of the jellyfish- its beautiful tentacles, bright colors, bioluminescence and traslucencyinspired the wallpapers and tiles. The sea urchin inspired the light fixture.
Sea urchin light fixture: 3D printed via Shapeways; Wallpaper printed via Spoonflower; Tile via 3D printed resin.
Luminesce Hotel Design
Design
In collaboration with: Julienne Barrett
The medusozoa, or jellyfish, has been the inspiration for many elements of our hotel. The hotel concept is bioluminescence. Bioluminescence is the biochemicallyproduced light emitted by living organisms. Transparency allows the light to glow brightly. Like the jellyfish glows under lights, so too does the hotel through lighting, materials, and color.
Design Solution The bottom floor of the hotel, the basement, will be the brightest floor. The bright light sources will come from the glowing tile wall and hanging sea urchin light fixture.
For the Luminsesce Hotel, our drawings are depicted conceptually, giving an appearance of “glowing.
MEDUSOZOA
The medusozoa is coloquially known as the jellyfish. We used the jellyfish’s billowy ruffled tentacles and its long, strandlike tentacles in our design. There are four materials used in our design: sheer fabric, silky opaque fabric, mirror and clear acrylic. The fabric is used for the ruffled tentacle pieces and the mirror and acrylic is used for the thin tentacle pieces. The purpose of the mirrored and acrylic materials is for light to reflect and refract through the tentacles to create interesting light patterns. The arrangement of the fabrics is important for temperature and sunlight control in the room.
MEDUSOZOA Our curtain is composed of three layers, each layer on a seperate rod. On the layer farthest from the window, the first layer, hangs acrylic, mirror and sheer fabric only. This is so one can block minimal amounts of sunlight. The middle layer uses all four materials for more light and climate mediation. There is an equal number of sheer and opaque fabric for a higher level of darkness. The third layer, which is closest to the window, is made with acrylic, mirror and only opaque fabric. Using only opaque fabric will block the maximum amount of sunlight and heat coming into the room.
