2016 MARKETING ATLAS

table of contents

We’ve Come A Long Way...

Indeed we have, since that first (1991-1992) edition of the MARKETING ATLAS 25 years ago!... I still can see daughter, Melissa, struggling to avoid crashing our little Apple SE (successor to the Lisa) as she laid out the poster that accompanied that first ATLAS, with the logos and phone numbers of the advertisers placed in their approximate locations on the Seattle-area schematic (below). The poster idea died an early death. The 1993 edition also brought big format changes, from the back-then-traditional listings composed of lines of type to the now-familiar card-size ads, and a new cover style, featuring a dominant element on a black background. Jack Anderson of Hornall Anderson gets the credit for creating that style (see page 33), which was carried on by the majority of agencies that took turns designing the cover year-after-year. The use of film gave way to digital production in early 2000, black-and-white pages finally turned to full color in 2008 and the online edition of the ATLAS debuted in 2010. Over those two-plus decades, we invested in no fewer than 20 Apple computers, beginning with that SE, and countless software programs—many with crash-inducing complexities. And let’s not forget the floppy disk to SyQuest to pdf/jpeg evolution. The core marcomm advertisers remained loyal, even as consolidations and the inevitable business failures took their toll over the years, and the advent of the digital age produced a marcomm realm markedly different than that of 1991. Thanks to all who were part of the journey... —Larry Coffman

Best-Ever ATLAS Cover

Hornall Anderson’s BestEver Cover also was the firstever cover in what became a traditional format—a compelling graphic image on a black background—for the majority of the ATLAS editions, after it debuted in 1993. HA principal Jack Anderson literally sketched the idea for the “thermographic hand” on a napkin over coffee. Besides creating a striking format, Anderson became the first in a long line of leading local graphic designers whose work graced the ATLAS covers.

best-ever ATLAS cover and ad

Below are the Best-Ever Cover and Best-Ever Card-Size ad in the 25-year history of the MARKETING ATLAS, as voted upon by visitors to an online site and the MARKETING Awards Committee. Accompanying each is the custom trophy that was presented to the respective winners at THE EVENT on May 18.

Best-Ever ATLAS Ad

Bullseye Creative is a worthy winner of the BestEver Card-Size ad award— not only for this eye-catching upside-down spoof—but also for the consistent series of arresting ads that it produced over the years. For perspective, this ad was one of an estimated total of more than 4,000 ads that appeared in the 25 editions of the ATLAS, beginning in 1991. Credits for the winning ad go to Bullseye Creative principal and creative director James Klauser.

The intangible benefits, including networking opportunities, fellowship with other graphic communications firms, and having a trusted confidant at the PPI office when business issues arise, should also be considered. Most importantly, a trade organization should be able to show concrete numbers that prove the true dollar value of membership. PPI can. The ROI examples shown here are based on companies achieving $1,000,000 in annual sales, with the assumption that the programs/ services illustrated will be utilized.

The Silver Anniversary ATLAS cover design is by Scott Book, a MARKETING-team member and designer of the 2011 cover that was a finalist for Best-Ever ATLAS Cover (see Page 33). Kudos also to our long-time ATLAS printer, Consolidated Press, for their quality work. This is the last ATLAS in this format. When I turn the MARKETING reins over to Melissa and her husband, Scott, in Jan. 2017, I know that whatever form the new publication takes, it will be in good hands. —Larry Coffman
