Ending On a High Note...
When calling on prospective entrants in the MARKETING Awards competition this Spring, I’d occasionally get the reply, “Well, we’re going to pass this year, but we have a couple of great entries for next year.” Each time, I was tempted to reply: “But there’s not going to be a next year.” And, indeed, there won’t be—for several important reasons. First, the Seattle-area marcomm community is strongly trending younger, more digital than traditional, less organized on the agency model and running with much leaner staff, whatever the model. Second, for any or all of these reasons, awards clearly are a low priority, as reflected in the drastic drop in ADDY entries and cancellation of the AMA Pulse Awards this year—not to mention a nearly 20% decrease in MARKETING Awards entries over the prior year. Third, it’s clear that the MARKETING Awards program introduced seven years ago—following cancellation of both the Seattle Show and the PSRBA Soundies— has run its course, after hitting the high point in both entries and EVENT attendance two years ago. And attendance by the IMMORTALS and agency principals was the lowest-ever this year. However, we’re ending THE EVENT on a high note, with excellent choices for the Best of Show, Best of Show: Graphic Arts, Publishers’ Choice and inaugural MARCOMM Person of the Year awards—all of which are displayed in these pages. We visited the MARKETING archives to reprise photos from THE EVENT in each of the six previous years on Page 30, and also have included a montage of photos from this year’s EVENT on Page 28.. And in the new year, we’ll publish the 2019 LINK, successor to the former MARKETING ATLAS, which will connect marcomm vendors with corporate CMOs and serve as a valuable resource for all members of the marcomm community. As noted on Page 34, the www.marketingnw.com website will be the “continuing connection,” moving forward, recording the changes and trends mentioned at the outset. Melissa and I want to expressed our deepest appreciation for all the support we’ve received—across the full range of disciplines—in building the marcomm community over the past three decades.
Dear Immortals Committee,
When you elevated me to, Immortal status, I naturally assumed Id be impervious to harm so I tried BASE jumping. My attorneys will be contacting you. Sincerely, Dave Remer Immortal Class of 2018
A Big Thank You!

There are 16 people who deserve a lion’s share of the credit for the success of the MARKETING Awards over the past seven years. The fact that they all were involved in the evaluation of entries each year gave them a unique perspective. And they showed amazing unanimity in their choices of the best work in each category, year-after-year. A big thank you to MARKETING Awards Committee chair Richard Bendix and members Jim Baumgardt, Craig Heisinger, Don Kraft, Dan Lane, Ted Leonhardt, Catherine McConnell, Don Morgan, Wendy Quesinberry, Michael Richard and Cathie Valentine-McKinney. Thanks also to our Expert Panel, chaired by Steve Darland, and members Nick Del Calzo, Bill Lane, Mitch Orfuss and Sean Robertson.
Our Family Business is Your Family Business
WOO-HOO! As we celebrate 110 years, we’re pleased to unveil our new look—one that matches what we’ve become since 1908—a multi-generational, women-owned family company who understands the unique needs of independent family-owned businesses. We couldn’t have done it without the amazing crew at Bullseye Creative (Peter and James--our brothers from another mother), Don Morgan and Marketing NW. Here’s to family, Crystal M’s (wink, wink), and the next 110 years!

One of the simplest things you can do for democracy: support a free press. Journalism isn’t just about facts and figures. It’s about digging deep to find the truth, and holding those in power accountable. At The Seattle Times, we’re committed to keeping up with the issues that impact our region, and we do it 24/7, in print and online, with the help of our loyal subscribers. Thanks to those on the MARKETING Awards committee who recognized our efforts to promote our news, and the value of the free press in our region.

Meet the Newest MARKETING IMMORTALS Inductees
Steve West: Standout In Two Separate Careers
Growing up in the logging seaport of Grays Harbor County, and working Summer jobs in the mills, prompted Steve West to seek a slightly less-dangerous way of making a living. Borrowing from his high-school experience (always the one with the 45s for the school sock-hop), Steve became a disc jockey and began his radio career in 1962 at a small, daytime radio station, KHOK in Hoquiam. His career branched into teen-dance promotions, highlighted by the night he brought the Beach Boys to
Hoquiam High School. After a short stint on active duty with the Washington National Guard, Steve became a morning jock at KPUG in Bellingham. Steve and Sharon were married there in 1967, and Steve was fired while they were on their honeymoon. This helped Sharon understand that it is what it is—and led to 50+ years of togetherness. It also opened the door for a job interview—and a job—with Pat O’Day (now a fellow IMMORTAL) at legendary KJR in Seattle. In 1970, Steve left KJR to move into program management. With a team of young radio personalities, he transformed KTAC/Tacoma into the South Sound’s Top 40 leader. Steve was then invited back into the Kaye/Smith radio group as program director at top-rated KJRB/ Spokane. Following four successful years in the Inland Empire, it was back to Seattle,
this time as program director at KJR. And then came FM! As the decade of the ’70s came to a close, FM was finding a toehold with young radio listeners. Steve decided to move up the dial and accept the general manager’s position at KJR’s FM sister station, at a time when disco was the rage. With personalities like Langon & West, Crow & Hovanes and Steve Slaton, KISW, Seattle’s Best Rock, rocketed to No. 1—becoming the first FM station ever to gain the top position in the Seattleradio ratings. Following the sale of KISW in 1986, Steve launched a new FM station in 1987 for Roy Disney’s Shamrock Broadcasting. Some of the KISW staff joined the new KXRX, allowing 96-dot-5 to become an immediate and dominant force in the Seattle market. In 1996, Steve and a partner acquired the 850AM frequency in Tacoma and con-
verted the station to news/talk KH2O, the Voice of the South Sound. The station was sold to the Ackerley Group in 1998 when they realized that Tacoma wasn’t yet the City of Destiny. After selling KH2O, he formed the Steve West Group (SWG) a marketing company specializing in retail advertising. As a consultant with a customer viewpoint, SWG has helped businesses improve customer service and deliver their sales messages through both traditional and digital channels. Now in its twentieth year, SWG enjoys long-standing relationships with its clients. Steve, and the radio stations he's managed or owned, won numerous national awards for ad campaigns and promotions and twice were named Radio Station of the Year by the National Association of Broadcasters. And he was a recipient of the prestigious PSRBA Crystal Soundie Lifetime Achievement Award.
Gary Cone entered the printing industry immediately after graduation from the University of Washington in 1968. At the same time, he began a career-long involvement in industry associations, often serving in leadership positions. In 1977, he partnered with Bill Webber, and later with Bill’s son, Brian. Together, they built Litho Craft into a financially stable stalwart among Puget Sound area printers, with a reputation for quality and personal attention to clients and vendors alike. For nearly 20 years, through the 1980s and 1990s, Gary and Bill co-hosted a Valentine’s Day Vendor Appreciation Breakfast, setting a new standard and a high bar for maintaining close relationships with suppliers. They also held a customer “Thank You” Breakfast the day before Thanksgiving each year. This built a unique bond between Litho Craft and its customers as well as among the
customers themselves, who returned year-after-year. During those years, Gary focused on outside sales, particularly to graphic designers and advertising agencies. He built many long-lasting partnerships with the area’s top firms through regular weekly drop-bys at their offices. His unique sales approach was based on dealing directly with the decision maker, closing before the price was quoted and understanding that the customers were making their buying decisions emotionally, and then justifying them intellectually. The word “price” was not a part of Gary’s sales vocabulary; he would quote price when asked, but always treated it simply as a step to reach the end results the customer desired. It was never the focus. And he always personally returned every phone call, email and inquiry without delay—as he does to this day.
At the request of magazine editors, Gary contributed many articles to trade publications, all centered around sales, marketing and the attitudes toward pricing in the printing industry. He is the author of two books, Price Doesn’t Count—Getting Customers to Want to Buy from You, and Why Marketing? Building Momentum to Profit. The Price Doesn’t Count book became a standard “sales manual” in the printing industry, and its influence has spread to many totally unrelated business sectors. With his career-long involvement in the printing industry, Gary has been invited to speak or present at more than 50 regional and national trade association conferences throughout the U.S. He also has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the PPI Ben Franklin Award, induction into the Idealliance Soderstrom Society for outstanding contributions to the print
industry and the Independent Printers Worldwide “Mentor” Award. At home on Mercer Island, Gary is out in the yard and garden nearly every day during the Spring and Summer, planting, pruning and fine-tuning. An annual highlight is a family trip to Palm Desert every February with his wife, three daughters and son, and six grandkids, all taking full advantage of the warmer weather and resort activities.

The 2018 EVENT: Always A ‘One of a Kind Gathering’
THE EVENT always was a one-of-a-kind gathering each year, simply because of the unique blend of living luminaries, agency principals and newcomers to the Puget Sound area marcomm community. Unlike the ADDYs or Totems, this awards show brought together—and recognized— professionals across the creative spectrum and their work, as this photo montage reflects. Photos by Klem Daniels

Julie Colehour: 2017 Person of the Year Award Recipient Background: The MARKETING MARCOMM Person of the Year (POY) Award was established to honor creative work culminating during the year in question, rather than career achievement, which is the basis for most other such awards. It is open to marketing professionals—of any age—working in Washingon State. The inaugural year saw these three highly qualified nominees. The 2017 POY Award recipient, Julie Colehour, and Bryan Cohen co-founded C+C in 2005 with two questions in mind: Could they create a PR firm that positively impacts communities? Could they do great work for these clients while building a firm that people love to work for? These seemed like lofty goals when it was just the two of them, first working at Bryan”s kitchen table, then at an office in the back of a dress shop. Today, the agency can resoundingly answer yes—having grown to 70 employees with offices in Seattle, Portland and Boston.
Bryan and Julie kneeling with their Seattle staffers—and the 2017 MARKETING MARCOMM Person of the Year Award. This year, C+C was were named one of Washington’s Best Workplaces and PR Week’s Small Agency of the Year. C+C’s mission is simply Do Good Work, and Julie has helped build that mission into a daily reality. She began her career at DDB Seattle. where she created and managed the agency’s innovative Strategic Environmental Marketing Group. She co-wrote a book, The Environmental Marketing Imperative, and ultimately rose to VP of the agency.
In 2016, 73% of C+C revenue came from five-plus-year clients, compared with 30% for other firms their size,. And in 2016, staff turnover was only 9%, as compared with the 19% for other firms their size (both stats from the PR Council benchmarking survey). Julie’s daily commitment to creating campaigns that make the community a better place is matched by her commitment to involvement outside of C+C. She is an outdoor enthusiast heavily
involved in environmental protection as the current Board chair of both the Washington Conservation Voters and the Washington Environmental Council, helping to solve the state’s toughest environmental problems. Julie is frequently called upon to speak nationally about community-based social marketing and changing consumer behavior around issues such as recycling, water conservation and public safety.

The Other POY Nominees: Frank Blethen and Rod Brooks The 2017 achievement of the newspaper Frank Blethen leads was publication of arguably the greatest investigative series in the history of Seattle journalism. This was validated when The Seattle Times won the prestigious Selden Ring Award for its “Quality of Care” series that exposed troubles at the Seattle Swedish-Cherry Hill Hospital. The series resulted in the resignations of key personnel and widespread reforms within the leading neuroscience institute. The four-part series over two years began with an in-depth look at the treatment of 23-year-old artist Talia Goldenberg, who died following spine surgery at Swedish, and ended with revelations of how the hospital’s relationship with a real-estate developer complicated efforts to keep control of the medical programs. The remarkable series led to the resignation of the Swedish CEO, changes in policies regarding overlapping surgeries
by the same doctor and the suspension of star neurosurgeon Johnny Delashaw’s medical license, prior to his departure from the hospital. This achievement was accompanied by Blethen’s continuing efforts to maintain The Times as one of the few remaining family owned, independent daily newspapers in the nation. The Times also has been a leader in monetizing online services.
Rod Brooks is a remarkable guy, with a presence that commands any setting. He has had an exceptional marketing career, capped by his long tenure as VP/marketing for PEMCO Insurance, he’s a cancer survivor and he’s reinvented himself yet again as principal of The Grandpa Project. Rod’s past was feted on Jan. 31 with a retirement party in the offices of DNA Seattle, Rod’s long-time advertising agency at PEMCO and creator of the long-running and now-iconic “We’re a lot like you, a little different” TV spots. Said Rod: “It was humbling to have such a turnout of industry friends, colleagues, business partners and former employees help me celebrate the conclusion of a nearly 45-year marketing career. “The evening went by so quickly, but the memories will last forever. I’m so thankful to have gone to fun (not work) with such a great list of Northwest brands. And who ever would have
thought anyone could market, promote and innovate with an insurance brand for 18-plus years For that, I suppose, you have to be “a little different.’” It’s worth noting that Rod has achieved the “hat trick” of marketing industry awards, as an American Marketing Association Legend, a Word of Mouth Marketing Association Hall of Fame inductee and a member of the pantheon of MARKETING IMMORTALS.

With the discontinuation in 2018 of MARKETING newspaper, the MARKETING Awards and THE EVENT, the www.marketingnw.com website becomes the continuing—and critical—connection with the marcomm community that we have nurtured and grown in the Seattle area over the past three-plus decades. Your engagement with the site is vital to its effectiveness. An important connection with our marcomm history, of course, is the pantheon of MARKETING IMMORTALS. The website, with its treasure trove of commentaries, will be maintained and new members will be inducted periodically. It’s also our intention, at this point, to continue annual publication of THE LINK, due to debut in 2019 as the successor to the MARKETING ATLAS, which enjoyed a highly successful 25-year run, from 1991 to 2016. We’re excited about this new publication because it will have the added dimension of linking the marcomm vendor community with the corporate chief marketing officers who buy their services. Thanks to all for your past support, and we look forward to working with you in the future. —Larry and Melissa Vail Coffman
