FOREW o RD It seems never-ending, the stream of new technologies by which we view images. It grows exponentially at the expense of the small book publisher, the independent magazine, the corner bookshop. In our modern world, our interaction with images is often fleeting and elusive – the click of a mouse spirits us away from what was, just seconds ago, a fantastic new world. However, to linger on a picture with the paper between one’s fingertips is to squeeze every drop out of it. A great printed image stirs something within us. It commands our respect and reveals itself even as we watch. It promises a reward for our time. What’s more, the ritual of touching the image at the same moment we observe it doubles our sensory experience and gives us a deeper, more lasting memory – it burns its mark into our minds. What kind of permanency does the digital image have? E-books, e-mags, e-portfolios – one click, one trash can, and they’re gone. To quote an Apple product: “You can’t undo this action.” A printed picture offers a different kind of relationship: this image plans to stick around. We might be hurtling forwards at a rapid pace, but when it comes to the best possible presentation of images, it’s in old school we trust. It is with these thoughts that I proudly present the first issue of Periscope, a magazine showcasing works by our artists.
