Golf Fit: TRX RIP TRAINER
Rip Backswing Hold with Squat
By Mike Horn, Personal Coach
The TRX Rip Trainer is a weighted bar and resistance bungee duo that can be used to work your abs, obliques, back, and hips while building speed, agility, and balance. For athletes, the Rip Trainer is used to generate rotational power. Performing a backswing hold with a squat using the TRX Rip Trainer is a great way to prepare for upcoming tee times! It provides several benefits to golfers, including increased driving distance, retention of balance throughout the swing, and the ability to maintain a more consistent swing plane. It also reduces the risk of injury by minimizing the stress on the lower back and hips during the swing. ◆
⊳ TRY THE EXERCISE!
1. Start in golf address posture holding the Rip Trainer with a proper golf grip. Take the Rip Trainer to the top of your backswing as you work against the resistance of the Rip cord
2. Squat down while maintaining your backswing, then stand back up and return to the normal golf stance. Repeat this exercise five times on each side for total body symmetry

Take a caddie, change a life.
THE EVANS SCHOLARS PROGRAM
For promising young men and women across the country, college is further from reach than ever before. The Evans Scholarship is a full tuition and housing college scholarship for high-achieving caddies with limited financial means. Currently, 1,100 caddies are enrolled at 22 leading universities on an Evans Scholarship. The Evans Scholarship covers full tuition and housing costs for up to four years of college and is an estimated value of $125,000. There are now over 11,800 Evans Scholars alumni.
Baltimore Country Club has been a leader in the efforts to grow the Evans Scholars Program in Maryland and the East Region with BCC caddie Samantha Lannon becoming the first Evans Scholar in the State of Maryland to graduate from college when she earned her bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University in May 2021. There are three current BCC Evans Scholars in school with Rebecca Lannon, Varada Maulkhan, and Kendall Opheikens all attending the University of Maryland.
As we begin the 2023 Golf Season, we are pleased to announce that Baltimore Country Club caddie Antonio “AJ” Carter has been named one of the 2023 Evans Scholarship recipients. AJ is the fifth BCC caddie to be awarded this prestigious scholarship. AJ graduates from Archbishop Curley this spring and will be joining Rebecca, Varada, and Kendall at the University of Maryland this fall, and will be majoring in Marketing.
While at Archbishop Curley, AJ participated on the golf and basketball teams and was the Head Photographer for the
student photography team. AJ is also involved in youth ministry and volunteers at the Johns Hopkins Tunbridge Public Charter School aftercare program. When not caddying or volunteering, AJ enjoys videography, digital art/graphic design, film editing, and clothing design.
As we have said over the years, “take a caddie, change a life,” so please support our Caddie Program this season as much as you can. Caddie Manager Brett Keller has been busy training our new caddies and is happy to secure one of them on your next round. We have 60 to 70 ladies and gentlemen that are part of our Caddie Program, and it will only succeed and grow with your help and support. If you have any questions about the Caddie Program please reach out to Brett at bkeller@bcc1898.com.
There's no better way to enjoy a round of golf on our beautiful courses than in the company of one of our caddies. ◆

HOWARD UNIVERSITY LADY BISON INVITATIONAL
BCC is honored to be hosting the 2023 Howard University Lady Bison Invitational this month (April 9-11) on our championship East Course. Ten schools will be participating in this collegiate women's golf tournament. “We are extremely excited to host our Howard University [Lady Bison] Invitational at Baltimore Country Club—arguably one of the best golf courses in the State of Maryland,” said Samuel G. Puryear, Jr., Director of Golf at Howard University. “For many of the young ladies in the tournament, this is one of the best courses they will play in their entire collegiate career.”
The Howard University golf team drew national attention in 2019 after receiving a substantial donation from NBA All-Star Steph Curry who pledged to assist with the formation of the university’s first NCAA Division I golf program. The university debuted the inaugural women’s and men’s golf teams during the 2021 season. We are looking forward to hosting these young ladies for an unforgettable tournament. ◆

TEE UP FOR SUCCESS WITH THE GOLF INSTRUCTIONAL TEAM
The Instructional Team is excited to unveil this year’s golf programming. We are offering classes and specialty clinics that will suit all skill levels. If you’ve never been on the golf course before, we are offering on-course classes that will be sprinkled throughout the year. If you’re a skilled golfer, we are offering specialty classes to improve your short game. We’ve also handpicked some of the best instructors in the country to come in and work with you. If you’re a part of the Ladies Golf Association (LGA), we have a monthly class series just for you.
Our junior programming is coming back bigger and better than ever. Junior golfers will have ample opportunity to play and compete through PGA Junior League, Junior Interclub, and the Eastern Challenge. The weekly academy classes will continue to follow the U.S. Kids Golf pathways to help your junior unlock their best golfing potential.
All programs are on the Golf Calendar on the BCC website, along with a Golf Genius registration link in the details section. If you’d like to get involved in our programs but are unsure of where to start, feel free to reach out to me at ckim@bcc1898.com.
As always, the Instructional Team is available for individual, semi-private, and custom group instruction. Register for a lesson on the golf page of the website under Golf Instruction, tap Golf Lessons on the menu page of the mobile app, or contact a member of the Instructional Team. See you on the course! ◆

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE
Last month we highlighted a few weather facts regarding the amount of, or lack thereof, snow this winter. It's officially a new record, as we had no measurable snow in January and February. It’s the first time this has happened; however, there was one winter with under one inch of snow from 1949 to 1950.
With February being unseasonably warm, spring is coming much earlier, as evidenced by the plants responding to very early warm season temperatures. Another indicator of an early spring has been the arrival of the Canadian Geese to the property at Five Farms. Geese are imprinted birds. Where a goose is born, it will return to that site to nest when it is able to mate (typically at the age of two), and adult geese return to the same nesting sites each spring.
Geese Police of Maryland has provided quality Canadian Geese management at Five Farms for the past 15 years since the 450-acre property is highly desirable for both resident and migratory Canadian Geese. We control the population with several specialized techniques, mainly using working Border Collies. Border Collies have a unique stalk and a wolf-like stare called the “eye.” This breed is specially trained to herd and harass but never touch or otherwise harm the geese. Although perfectly safe, the geese believe their life is in imminent danger and not only quickly leave the property, but stay away longer than they would have had they encountered any other breed of dog.
Starting in February, Geese Police visits the property several times a day, at different times each day, seven days
a week through late May. The USDA Wildlife Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife approve these techniques for Canadian Geese control. In addition, the Humane Society and PETA recommend the use of working Border Collies for Canadian Geese control.
Also, the covers will be removed from the West Course and Driving Range tees as weather warms and temperatures are consistently in the 60 to 75-degree range. Until there is consistent growth of the turf where we can recover from divot injury, play will remain from the mats. This will ensure the tees are in top condition during the peak golfing season.
Looking forward to spring weather! ◆

JUNIOR PADDLE IS BOOMING
Our Presidents Day pop-up camp was a success! Our 16 participants started the morning with squash 57 and squash across both singles and doubles courts playing challenge court and lightning squash games. We also took advantage of the nice weather to get in a few games of tag before the group hit the paddle tennis courts. We played variations of paddle games such as champion of the court, burn, and around the world. The campers wrapped up the day with duckpin bowling and pizza in the bowling alley. We look forward to hosting more pop-up camps in the future.
We hope to see you soon! ◆
