BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.
Staff Member of the Month
NOVEMBER 2024
Mike Horn, Personal Coach
Over the past three years, Mike has become an incredible trainer, teammate, and vital part of our team. Mike’s commitment to his work and dedication to growth have made him a standout member of our staff. Recently, Mike stepped up to help facilitate training for Jenna’s clients while she was on maternity leave, balancing his full schedule and studies. His dedication has earned him glowing feedback from members of all ages. Mike also demonstrates strong leadership by proactively taking on responsibilities for events and New Member Onboarding. Whether at Five Farms or Roland Park, Mike brings positive energy and enthusiasm daily, embodying our Simple Truth: Great People Makes Favorite Places. We are proud to celebrate Mike’s growth and this well-deserved recognition!
JANUARY 2025
Princess Mendoza, J-1 Food & Beverage Intern
In the last year, Princess has shown incredible growth and dedication during her time at Baltimore Country Club. She has been a consistent and reliable presence in numerous roles, excelling as a Lead Food Runner, Server Assistant, Refreshment Stand Attendant, Early Bird Server, and Cocktail Server. She has also played a key role in events such as Ladies' Tuesday Bowling, wedding tastings, and banquets, where she has assisted with food and beverage orders. Princess leads by example, guiding and supporting her peers with professionalism and care. Her hard work and commitment have made a lasting impact. She completed her internship in March, and is greatly missed!
Exceptional Leadership
Jared Hedrick, Food & Beverage Manager
Since becoming Assistant Food & Beverage Manager in March 2024, Jared has excelled in his role, earning a promotion to Food & Beverage Manager in January 2025. He has taken on staff scheduling, payroll, and staff onboarding while continuing to lead with dedication. Jared recently passed his WSET Level-1 Wine Exam and became a certified TIPS alcohol safety trainer. His passion for beverages helped create cocktails for the Chef to Chef Conference and BCC’s Tilly's Harvest Rye. We’re grateful for Jared’s contributions and excited for his continued growth at BCC!
Simple Truth Award
Michael Wilkinson, Sous Chef Tournant
Caroline Pogust, Events Manager
During the Gentlemen’s Member-Member Invitational, Chef Mike created a special trail mix as a cart snack. A member raved about it and asked if BCC sells it, inspiring Chef Mike and Caroline to prepare care packages with the mix. When they learned the member would be golfing the following Sunday, Caroline arranged a surprise gift bag at the golf shop. The member was thrilled and deeply appreciated the thoughtful gesture!

WHY MOBILITY TRAINING?
Mobility training improves your body’s ability to move joints through a full range of motion with strength and control, improving flexibility and reducing the risk of injury.
Examples: Hip & shoulder CARs, 90/90 stretch, lumbar rotation, squat with thoracic twist
WHY BALANCE & AGILITY TRAINING?
TRAINING FOR YOUR SPORT
By Jessica Taylorson, Personal Coach
The weather is warming up and the days are getting longer. It’s time to get your body ready for all your outdoor activities. Whether you play golf, tennis, pickleball, swim, walk, run, or garden, you should be working on your mobility, balance and agility, strength, and power

WHY STRENGTH TRAINING?
Balance training involves exercises that strengthen the muscles that help keep you upright, including your legs and core. These exercises can improve stability, prevent falls, and enhance coordination and control. Agility training is important because it improves coordination, speed, power, and reactive ability.
Examples: Single leg exercises, walking heel to toe, standing on balance board or bosu, proprioception exercises (eyes closed)
Strength training enhances muscle strength, reduces the risk of injury, burns calories, improves balance and heart health, and boosts your mood.
Examples: Bodyweight training (squats, pushups and planks), weighted exercises (machines, cables, dumbbells, and kettlebells)
WHY POWER TRAINING?
Power training enhances strength, power, and speed, leading to improved sports performance. It also promotes faster recovery between sets, reduces the risk of injury, builds lean muscle mass, and helps manage or prevent conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and osteoporosis.
Examples: Medicine ball throws, plyometrics (jumping exercises), sprints, power lifting
WELL-BEING SERVICES
As a BCC member, you have access to a dedicated team of well-being professionals and services. Explore our offerings below, or experience a selection of our wellness services with our Intro to Wellness package.
THAI YOGA BODYWORK
Enjoy the benefits of relaxation, massage, yoga, and energy work in this truly unique experience to connect the body and mind through the breath. You will fully relax and let go of physical and emotional stress while your body is guided into gentle stretching followed by massage along the meridian lines in the body. You will leave feeling relaxed, restored, and rejuvenated.
The Thai Bodywork Practitioner presses and kneads the muscles with their hands, feet, and forearms, synchronized with the breath, and fluently moves and twists your body into various stretches and yoga postures. The bodywork sessions are given on a memory foam mat in four positions: lying supine, side-lying, lying prone, and seated.
The recipient should wear loose, comfortable clothing that they can stretch in. While relaxing, the client may become cooler; wearing long sleeves, socks, and an optional blanket is recommended to stay comfortable.

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE
In last month’s issue of Lifestyle, I wrote about green aeration and dates that will be completed this spring on the West Course. In addition, the West Course is closed on April 1 to complete DryJect sand injection on greens. Aeration is necessary to relieve compaction, improve oxygen, stimulate new rooting in the soil, and improve water penetration and infiltration in the root zone. This year, our team began preparing for the summer stress season by aerating the West greens in late March by deep tine aerating with ½" solid tines, followed by 3/8" tines, then sand topdressing to smooth the surface. Instead of aerating the West fairways, we will be vertical mowing or verticutting the fairways while the course is closed. East Course aeration is scheduled for April 28 through May 1. We will be pulling small 1/8" cores followed by a light application of sand topdressing on the greens and utilizing deep tine aeration and utilizing 5/8" tines on the tees. Also, we will be solid tine aerating and verticutting fairways while we are closed.
In 2014, the East fairways were regrassed from perennial ryegrass to 007 creeping bentgrass. 10 years later, it’s become apparent that we have a problem with perennial ryegrass returning or contaminating the once solid stand of 007 creeping bentgrass. This contamination can happen for several reasons and the most logical explanation is the amount of ryegrass seed built up in the soil after years of maintaining ryegrass fairways and using ryegrass seed for divot recovery and overseeding. Afterall, perennial ryegrass seed can remain viable in the soil for 20 years. As you have observed, the ryegrass creates an unsightly patchy appearance on creeping bentgrass fairways because of the discoloration and growth habit differences between the two grass species.
Over the years, we have tested numerous herbicides to remove these clumps from bentgrass fairways. This April, we begin a selective herbicide program to remove perennial ryegrass and return the uniform stand of creeping bentgrass. Research and recommendations from various independent research have suggested spring applications are preferred to reduce yellowing and potential injury of the bentgrass. The herbicide is called Manuscript and is applied with a surfactant. For the material to be effective, we will require two or three applications and repeat every three weeks. Please be aware that the clumps will turn yellow and eventually die. This will be unsightly until the voids (bare areas) in the bentgrass fill in.
Reseeding can take place two weeks after the last application in the spring, and our Agronomic programs will be adjusted to ensure as speedy recovery as possible.
Tim Kennelly, CGCS Head Greenkeeper
Patches of perennial ryegrass persist among the 007 creeping bentgrass, even a decade after regrassing.
Herbicides are applied to bentgrass fairways to remove perennial ryegrass.
Perennial ryegrass has been removed after applications of Manuscript herbicide.
WINTER RACQUETS WRAP-UP
