Baltimore native Bob McClafferty brings a unique mix of talent and personality to his role as a barber at Baltimore Country Club, where he has worked for the past nine years. Growing up in Homeland, Bob was a multi-sport athlete, excelling in baseball, basketball, football, and golf while chasing after his older brothers. At Loyola Blakefield, he added handball and racquetball to his repertoire.

But Bob’s talents don’t stop there. A lifelong music enthusiast, he majored in the subject and toured the East Coast with his Gibson Les Paul guitar, writing and recording songs along the way. Though his stage days are behind him, Bob’s storytelling flair and sense of humor continue to shine.

With nearly 40 years of experience in the barbering trade and an impressive average of 1,500 haircuts annually, Bob has become a fixture at BCC. Reflecting on his time at the Club, he says, “Meeting new people, talking to them, and listening to their life stories is the best part. Working at BCC has been a perfect fit for me. I wish I had started here sooner.”

From music to barbering, Bob’s journey has been anything but ordinary—a testament to the vibrant community at Baltimore Country Club. The Barber Shop is located in the Gentlemen's Locker Room at Roland Park and Five Farms. Barber services are available to gentlemen members only.

The Western Golf Association & the Evans Scholarship Foundation (WGAESF) has selected Baltimore Country Club to host one of 30 plus Evans Scholars selection meetings across the country. After these selection meetings, over 350 high school caddies will receive the life-changing Evans Scholarship, a four-year, full academic scholarship valued at $125,000 or more at one of 24 universities nationwide.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

Over the course of this past season, I cannot thank the membership enough for their support of our Caddie Program either by taking caddies, contributing to the foundation through their Par Club membership, participating in events this year where portions of the entry fee went to the Evans Scholars Foundation.

From these events alone, over $35,000 was raised!

Farms, we will have approximately 10 high school senior youth caddies interviewing for the opportunity to be awarded this once-in-a-lifetime scholarship.

If you have never had the opportunity to attend in person or watch via Zoom, this is your chance. You will walk away from this meeting understanding and realizing you played or can play a role in someone’s life by taking a caddie and supporting the WGAESF.

Save the date and be on the lookout for more information.

LGA 9-Hole Black & Gold Tournament
2024 Andre C. Suan Invitational

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE

As we prepare for the 2025 season, one of the final practices we will complete on all, or portions of the West Course greens, on holes 1 through 8 and 10 (during the week of December 2) is Drill and Fill Aeration. This process drills holes up to 12 inches deep into the putting green on six-inch centers, removing soil and backfilling each hole with sand to create deep sand columns in the root zone. This is a proven method for modifying the root zone without total rebuilding to improve turf quality and greatly improve internal drainage on the portions of greens that remain soft and wet following rain events.

Since the grass is no longer growing and recovery from divots is non-existent, all play from the driving range will be from the mats until the next growing season. Also, the Range tees and tees on the West will be covered, which allows air, water,

and sunlight to penetrate, which acts similar to a greenhouse by increasing surface and soil temperatures to ensure these areas are in the best possible condition for the 2025 season.

While we experienced damage to the range fields in the past, we are pleased with the actions we have taken in the past to minimize winter injury to the bermudagrass in the future. This includes:

• No mechanical ball picking on the range after December 1. All picking will be done by hand

• The height of cut has been raised on the field leading up to dormancy, and the addition of drainage will be extremely beneficial, although work remains in the middle of the field. While there is no 100% guaranteed way to prevent winter injury in Bermuda, we feel the steps we have

taken, along with installing the covers, provide the best level of protection for bermudagrass grown during periods of extremely low temperatures and growing on a sand base

The leaves have been falling since late October, and we use a combination of leaf blowers and mulching to make them disappear from the property. Mulching leaves throughout the hundreds of acres of property we maintain benefits our turf here at BCC. Leaf work will continue until the property is clean and leaf-free.

Happy Holidays from your Golf & Grounds Maintenance Team!
