ABOUT BALTIMORE COUNTRY CLUB
Baltimore Country Club (BCC) was founded on January 13, 1898 at its Roland Park location. The Club was a success from the start, with 600 members enjoying its 150-acre facility less than five miles from downtown Baltimore. Just one year after opening, the Club gained immediate recognition in the golf world by hosting the fifth United States Open Championship, won by Willie Smith of Scotland. By the 1920s the decision was made to acquire land to the north of the city and expand the popular golfing amenities to a second location.
The East Course at Five Farms, designed by A. W. Tillinghast, officially opened in September of 1926 and was instantly recognized as a masterpiece of golf course architecture. Since then, our Par 70 East Course, with back-to-front pitched greens, limited water hazards, and 96 bunkers, has received many honors, including making Golfweek’s list of “America’s Top 100 Classic Courses” (pre 1960) numerous times, most recently in 2020. It is also listed as the best Classic or Modern (post 1960 design) Course in the state of Maryland. A restoration project was completed in 2015 by Keith Foster, bringing the course back to Tillinghast’s original 1924 design.
Baltimore Country Club’s second course at Five Farms, the West, was redesigned in 1990 by Bob Cupp and Champions Tour member and World Golf Hall of Fame member, Tom Kite. In 2012, the course was renovated under the direction of Keith Foster. The Par 72 West Course gives members two outstanding golf courses to choose from on a daily basis.
The Club was named one of the “100 Most Prestigious Clubs in the World” by LINKS magazine. The USGA lists Baltimore Country Club as one of the first 100 clubs established in the United States. BCC is also a Platinum Club of America and a Platinum Club of the World.
OUR PURPOSE
Caddying holds a significant place in the rich heritage of golf and is also gaining prominence within our community.
At Baltimore Country Club, our Caddie Program aims to empower young individuals by granting them access to transformative scholarships, including the prestigious Evans Scholarship, through their involvement in caddying. We are committed to offering a holistic and dynamic approach, coupled with a mentorship initiative, to equip young adults with invaluable skills that will propel them towards success in the years ahead.
CHANGING LIVES, ONE CADDIE AT A TIME.
LEADING THE WAY
For promising young men and women across the country, college is further from reach than ever before. The Evans Scholarship is a full tuition and housing college scholarship for high-achieving caddies with limited financial means.
Baltimore Country Club has been a leader in the efforts to grow the Evans Scholars Program in Maryland and the East Region with Samantha Lannon becoming the first Baltimore Country Club Evans Scholar to graduate from college when she earned her bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University in May 2021. Samantha is also recognized as the first Maryland caddie in decades to receive the honor.
There are four Baltimore Country Club Evans Scholars in school with Rebecca Lannon, Varada Maulkhan, Kendall Opheikens, and AJ Carter all attending the University of Maryland.

ABOUT THE EVANS SCHOLARS FOUNDATION
Established in 1930 by the Western Golf Association (WGA) and celebrated amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr., the Evans Scholars Foundation is a charitable trust that provides full, four-year tuition and housing college scholarships to deserving caddies. The Foundation is the nation’s largest scholarship program for caddies, working toward a goal of having 1,500 Scholars in school by 2030.
The Evans Scholars Program provides academic, professional and social resources that help students maintain a cumulative 3.3 GPA and 98 percent graduation rate. There are a record 1,130 Evans Scholars enrolled in 24 leading universities for the 2023-24 academic year, and 12,040 young men and women have graduated as Evans Scholars since 1930.
The Evans Scholars Program is funded by more than 36,000 Par Club donors—many of whom are Evans Scholars Alumni—and proceeds from WGA tournaments, including the BMW Championship, a PGA TOUR FedExCup Playoff event.
Charles "Chick" Evans Jr. was born on July 18, 1890, and his family moved to Chicago in 1893. Five years later, he began caddying at Edgewater Golf Club. From that early introduction to the game, Chick grew into the nation's top amateur golfer. He earned his greatest fame in 1916, when he won both the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur. No other golfer had won both championships in the same year, and only the great Bobby Jones has done it since.
As Chick's fame grew, pressure mounted for him to turn professional. But he wasn't interested in playing for money. To preserve his amateur status, he decided any earnings should be placed in an escrow fund.
His mother, Lena, helped Chick make a plan to use his funds to finance college educations for needy caddies. From his Edgewater days, Chick knew there were many hardworking young caddies who showed academic promise but whose families could not afford the cost of college. In 1928, he persuaded the WGA to oversee his fund and in 1930, the first two Evans Scholarships were awarded.
“The Caddie is the lifeblood of the game of golf—a great companion, a friendly conversationalist and a smiling face. This is what the game of golf is truly about.”
Charles “Chick” Evans Jr.
