Great People Make Favorite Places
BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.
Staff Member of the Month
NOVEMBER
Lydia Eichhorst, Pastry Cook
Lydia joined BCC over the summer and has been a great asset to the Culinary Team, especially while the Executive Pastry Chef was on maternity leave. Lydia completely embodies our Simple Truth; as she always listens to her coworkers and our members, while picking up on the little things they like and surprising them with those treats. She always has a smile on her face and greets everyone with a good morning or hello! Lydia is always ready to go the extra mile to ensure she gets the job done at the highest level. We’re fortunate to have Lydia as a part of our BCC team!
JANUARY
Jerry Kalb, Lead Locker Room Attendant
Jerry has only been a part of the BCC Team for a year, and has already left an everlasting impression on the Club. Since his first day, he has been eager to learn and provide an extraordinary experience for members and guests. Upon entering the locker room, you are greeted by Jerry and you feel at home. He was instrumental in reopening the Five Farms Men’s Locker Room and getting it back to “normal” as if renovations never happened. He is someone you can count on day in and day out. The relationships he builds with members and guests is second to none and is one of the reasons why BCC is a favorite place for our members.
Exceptional Leadership Award
Carmina Purtell, Events Manager
Carmina has grown up at BCC in more ways than one. Starting at BCC several years ago as a Food & Beverage intern, she has worked her way up to Events Manager, and has grown into a wonderful leader. Her love and dedication to this team is evident in everything she does. Carmina is always ready to teach, guide, and learn. She understands the importance of teamwork and is consistently exceeding expectations. Carmina’s creativity and hard work throughout her time on the Events Team have set a high standard for what we can achieve. Her love of BCC, her fellow staff members, and the membership is apparent in every event, and we are so happy to show her our appreciation with this award.

TEE MARKERS & SCORECARDS
The tee markers on the courses are now roman numeral markers (I, II, III, IV, V) instead of colored system markers (black, blue, white, gold, red, green). Yardages will range anywhere from 51987181 on the East Course and 4661-6804 on the West Course. There will also be the opportunity to play more combination tees (I/ II, II/III, etc.), which will allow for more options as to the length of course that you feel suits your level of play.
The Maryland State Golf Association has reconfigured the
Course Rating and Slope Ratings for the various combinations of tees and yardages here at BCC. You may have already noticed this in your GHIN Handicap. This has now allowed for there to be more variety of tees/yardages and combinations for women and men to choose from. Finally, based on USGA/PGA studies, you can look at how far you hit your average drive and determine the recommended course yardage to play and the numbered tee marker associated with that yardage.
refill stations & personalized WATER BOTTLES
In an effort to reduce the use of plastic bottles on the courses, the Club is in the process of installing water refill stations. Currently, a refill station has been installed at the West Refreshment Stand #9.
Refill stations will be coming soon in the following locations:
• East Refreshment Stand #3/9
• East Restroom between #7/11
• West Restroom #15
Coolers with water will be available at the Tee Manager Station, West #5, and East #16 where refill stations cannot be installed.

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE
The East Course is scheduled to open for the season on Friday, March 24. When the East Course opens, you will see a few aeration holes from work completed in the winter. While we are still waiting for our first measurable snow of the season, temperatures have been cold enough that the turf has been dormant. Aeration performed in the fall and winter months will not recover until temperatures are consistently in the 60-75 degree range. The West Course will close March 27 through March 29 for green aeration and topdressing, along with solid tine fairway aeration. Recovery will take approximately three weeks (weather dependent),
since this work is being completed when soil and surface temperatures will still be cold. Green aeration and topdressing on the East Course will occur May 1 through May 3, with solid tine aeration to be completed on the fairway surfaces.
This season promises to be another busy year at Five Farms, and we look forward to seeing you this spring! ◆
Tim Kennelly, CGCS Head Greenkeeper

Renovating, Removing, & Replanting the Club Grounds for Spring
The Horticulture Team uses the winter months to address necessary dormant pruning of trees and shrubs across both campuses. Summer blooming shrubs can be pruned to size through late winter without fear of sacrificing bloom—knowing that their flowering buds will form on new wood that grows this coming season. Two types of pruning cuts are applied. Thinning cuts are used to remove whole branches at the base to encourage open habit and improve disease resistance.
Some shrubs, like Red- and Yellow-Twig Dogwood are thinned every year to encourage colorful new shoots. Heading cuts are used to reduce the length of each branch and encourage branching for fullness and overall size reduction. The team has already made thinning and heading cuts on Chastetree, Beautyberry, Rose, Crapemyrtle, Smokebush, and Panicle Hydrangea to improve shape and blooming. The orchards were pruned in February to improve air flow and light penetration for improved fruit set. Spring blooming shrubs, like Azalea, Fothergilla, Forsythia, and fragrant Viburnum will be pruned as needed after flowering to allow subsequent growth and bud set so it is ready to bloom on what will be “old wood” next spring.
Sometimes a shrub has outgrown its space or years of shearing has left the interior bare, and we must choose to either remove or renovate. Renovation involves cutting to ground level to allow new shoots to regenerate from the mature root system. Many suckering species tolerate this very well, including Forsythia, Abelia, Spiraea, and Lilac. At Five Farms, to improve safety (visibility) and handrail access, the overgrown Glossy Abelia at the stairs to the clubhouse will be renovated to ground level in early March. Because they have an established root system, these should fill out nicely within a few months.
As ground conditions allow nurseries to dig plant material for shipment, the Horticulture Team will shift from pruning to planting this month. Three Winter King Hawthorns will be added to the bag drop area, while a Ft. McNair Buckeye will be planted at the top of the stairs to the parking lot, where a declining yellowwood was removed. Additionally, our orchards will be rejuvenated with the addition of seven apple and three peach trees, and some large pine trees will be added to buffer the Practice Range. ◆

JUNIOR PADDLE IS BOOMING
The junior paddle scene has exploded at BCC this winter. Paddle tennis is a great complimentary or primary racquet sport for juniors. It teaches them a well-rounded skill set that transfers to other racquet sports they play. It’s also a great introduction to racquet sports for juniors without experience. Our Junior Racquets Program utilizes modified equipment for less experienced paddle tennis players and across all racquet sports. Research shows that this approach helps junior players advance their skill set quickly, and experience success in the game early. Ultimately, it encourages juniors to stay in the game longer because they are able to see their progress and advance through a pathway.
See you on the paddle courts! ◆
