NOT

STAFF MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Max Scherr, Server Assistant/Food Runner

Max joined us last summer in the pool café and immediately jumped in, quickly learning all positions and helping wherever needed. He thrived at the pool and moved into the clubhouse to help year-round. Max shined as a server assistant. He has now moved on to food running, where he has taken pride and ownership! Max has also recently started working Early Bird Breakfast for the golf members. This position takes independence and reliability, getting here early every Saturday and Sunday and having everything set and ready and maintained throughout the morning. It has also allowed him to build genuine relationships with many golf members who look forward to seeing him every weekend and praise his hard work. He takes pride in everything he does; we are lucky to have him.

SIMPLE TRUTH AWARD

Carmina Purtell, Patricia Goss, Brittany Lewis

BCC Member Mr. Larry Koch has built many genuine relationships with staff members. He recently informed a few of our staff that he would not be visiting the club for a few weeks because he would be driving to his second home in North Carolina for a kidney transplant. Not only was Mr. Koch anxious about this procedure himself, but also because his daughter would be his kidney donor. Carmina, Brittany, and Patricia stepped into action to ensure that Mr. Koch felt love from BCC. The trio organized a card and road trip snack bag for Mr. Koch with a BCC blanket. Once Mr. Koch arrived in North Carolina and had his procedure, Patricia and Carmina both assisted in the organization of a special activity for Mr. Koch to enjoy with his family at Partee Shack. Carmina also went above and beyond and sent a joint birthday cake to Mr. and Mrs. Koch, who celebrated their birthdays in March while in North Carolina. The group effort made Mr. Koch feel extremely supported and demonstrated the impact of building genuine relationships with our Members.

EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD

Jessica Noffsinger, Graphic Designer

During her four-year tenure at BCC, Jess has become an integral part of the team. Even though her work mostly happens behind the scenes, her passion for design permeates throughout the Club. It’s been incredibly gratifying to witness her growth as both a designer and a professional. From creating the impressive BCC pizza box to crafting the logo for Five Farms Dining, and designing eye-catching ads, flyers, and brochures—there are no limits to Jess’ creativity. Her willingness to learn and eagerness to help staff and members is admirable. It has been incredibly satisfying to see Jess step up and take the lead on projects, bringing fresh and innovative ideas to the table. For Jess, above and beyond certainly is the standard. Her contributions have been nothing short of outstanding, and it is an honor to be able to recognize Jess as one of the emerging leaders at BCC!

groundS meet the team

Every year, the Golf + Grounds Maintenance team continually strives for constant improvement. Projects are vetted through the Green, Golf, and Capital & Planning committees. If approved, these projects are scheduled years ahead for implementation.

Last fall, we implemented and recently completed an additional phase of the Long-Term Drainage Master Plan on the East Course by finishing the entire hole of #1 and lowest portion of the #2 fairway. Details of the work include 855 tons of drainage sand, 226 tons of growing mix (top 6” of trench), 1.79 miles of pipe, and 32 surface drainage basins installed.

Our Long-Term Drainage Master Plan was developed in 2018 by Turf Drainage Company of America and implemented in 2019 because of record-breaking

rainfall in 2018, with over 75” of precipitation (33” above the 147-year annual average), followed by 55” in 2019 (14” above the annual average). The plan has been implemented with local golf course contractor McDonald & Sons. To date, 4.04 miles of pipe, out of the over 15 miles in the plan, have been installed. The plan involves numerous phases throughout the next few years until it’s fully complete. Ultimately the goal is to consistently provide a well-drained soil profile, healthy playing surfaces that can withstand the summer stress periods, and firmer playing surfaces that our members and guests come to expect.

In addition to this work, our team along with McDonald & Sons completed regrassing all the West Course tees from cool-season bentgrass to warmseason bermudagrass. Why make the switch? Warmseason bermudagrass requires fewer inputs of water, fertilizer, and other turf care products (fungicide, herbicide, insecticide) and performs better during the summer stress season when the play on the courses is at its peak. In addition, the approximate savings of fewer inputs is approximately $17,000 per year.
