GREENFOLDER STORIES

What sets Baltimore Country Club apart from other country clubs? Our people! Our staff members take every step to go above and beyond to accomplish our Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Often, there are easy ways to make a positive impression on our members from saying happy birthday to congratulations on an award. However, not being afraid to make the big gestures is what distinguishes us.

We love sharing these stories of the Simple Truth! Submit your Simple Truth experience by filling out the Green Folder Stories form, located at the bottom of the Park & Farms email, in Park & Farms, the staff webpage, or scan the QR codes in the staff breakrooms. BCC encourages all members to submit their own or fellow staff members’ Green Folder Stories.

Simple Truth Award

Schmitt, Membership Assistant

Our Director of Membership, Casey, recently spoke with a member who was transitioning to a different status while undergoing cancer treatment. After their conversation, Casey relayed the details to Hannah in preparation for an upcoming meeting. Without hesitation, Hannah thought about the member’s comfort during this time and suggested putting together a tote filled with BCC items from the Golf Shop. Within minutes, she selected a cozy sweatshirt the shop for the member. What impressed Casey was how quickly Hannah acted. She expressed that she felt inspired to help as if it was something she was meant to do. Her words struck a chord: “When something nice crosses your mind, there’s a reason to act on it because we often hesitate.” We are grateful for Hannah’s compassion and empowerment to brighten a member’s day!

HELPING HOSPITALIZED PATIENTS EAT A HOT MEAL.

UMD Medical System: 8:00am, 12:00pm, 5:30pm

At UM Rehab & Ortho, we specialize in treating people with brain or spinal cord injuries, strokes, amputations or other complex medical needs. Due to these injuries or illnesses our patients may have challenges related to seating, swallowing, coordination or other barriers to eating on their own.

For some patients, due to the challenges mentioned above, meal times may not be enjoyable. We aim to create an environment where they can take their time, eat food when it is hot and have a pleasant meal. Volunteers help to make this a reality by focusing on one patient, building rapport and allowing the patient the time they need to consume their meals.

WELCOME BAGS FOR AFFORDABLE HOMES & COMMUNITIES RESIDENTS

Mondays-Saturdays

When families move into AHC’s affordable housing communities, we like to give them a welcome bag filled with household supplies to say “welcome home.”

Volunteers will purchase items and assemble the bags. The bag can be a paper grocery shopping bag, reusable grocery size bag or large gift bag. For purposes of hygiene and dignity, we ask that all items are new, unopened and unused. Welcome bags will be delivered to an AHC property in Baltimore City or Baltimore County.

If

you need help, ask. If you can help, give.

Helping Hands is an example of how BCC fosters a genuine approach to the modern working environment. Important keys to our culture are kindness, sincerity, and the extraordinary. The foundation is here because BCC understands that life can be unpredictable, and anything that hinders stability can absolutely affect your day to day life. With the help from generous Staff Members and Members of the Club who opt-in to donating to the fund, they are able to be a pillar of support for those who are seeking assistance. Whether it was an overwhelming season and you are unable to pay your electricity bill, you are finding it hard to put groceries on the table, or you got stuck with an unmanageable hospital bill, know that we are here for you. Helping Hands is a driving force in our mission here at the club, and we couldn’t do it without you.

INGREDIENTS

BRAISED CHUCK ROAST RECIPE FROM CHEF DUSTIN

3 1/2 lb boneless beef bottom chuck roast

4 1/4 teaspoons kosher salt, Diamond Crystal ground black pepper

2 tablespoons neutral oil, (canola, vegetable, or avocado)

1 carrot, small dice

1 celery stalk, small dice

1 small yellow onion, small dice

1 leek, sliced thin

4 garlic cloves, sliced thin

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 300°F.

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1/2 cup dry red wine, cabernet or merlot

3 1/2 cups beef stock

6 thyme sprigs

2 rosemary sprigs

1 teaspoon cumin

2 carrots, cut into 1 inch pieces

4 russet potatoes, cut into 1 inch pieces

2. Season chuck roast with 4 1/4 teaspoons of kosher salt and ground black pepper evenly on all sides. This may seem like a lot of salt, however this is a very large and thick cut of meat so it needs all the seasoning it can get.

3. Heat up the oil in a large Dutch oven over medium high heat, and sear all side of the chuck roast. This can take up to 10 minutes.

4. Once all the sides are nice and brown, remove the roast from the pot and set to the side. Add in the small diced carrots, onions, celery, and the sliced leeks. Sauté the vegetables until they start to sweat, about five minutes. Add in the garlic cloves and cook until fragrant, about one minute.

5. Add in the tomato paste and let it cook for about two minutes. Deglaze the pot with the red wine and cook until the wine reduces by half. Add the roast back into the pot along with the beef stock, thyme, rosemary, cumin, and a little bit more salt and pepper to taste.

6. Bring to a boil, cover, and place into the oven for one hour. Flip the roast after an hour and cover again for another hour and a half.

7. After 2 1/2 hours, add in the carrots and potatoes, cover and let cook for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, uncover the pot and let it cook for an additional 30 minutes.

8. Remove any excess fat from the top of the cooking liquid and serve. Enjoy!

FALL COCKTAILS

FALL PALOMA & MULLED WINE

MULLED WINE:

FALL PALOMA:

2oz Tequila blanco

2oz Grapefruit juice

1.5oz Honey cinnamon simple syrup

1/2 oz Lime juice

Rim with rock salt and cinnamon

Garnish with grapefruit, cinnamon stick, and enjoy!

2 x 750ml bottles medium-bodied red wine 6 cloves

2 cinnamon sticks, broken in half, plus more to garnish (optional)

100ml smooth orange juice 1 large orange, sliced into thin half-moons, pips removed 2 lemons, sliced into thin halfmoons, pips removed Caster sugar to taste (about 4 tsp) 5 tbsp brand

Pour the wine into a large pan and add the spices, orange juice, citrus slices and sugar. Heat over a low-medium heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar, and bring the mulled wine to just under simmering point. Don’t let it boil. Taste as you go, adding more sugar and spice if you want.

Add the brandy at the end, then stir and ladle into thick glass tumblers, including some cloves and citrus slices in each glass. Serve with a whole cinnamon stick in each glass to stir while sipping, if you like.

Bartender Secret

Want to know which wine is best for mulled wine? It needs to be a red you’d be happy to drink on its own. Best is a ripe and fruity style, not too heavy or acidic. A decent côtes du rhône, Australian shirazcabernet or Chilean merlot are all good picks.

MEMBER SURVEY RESPONSES FROM HAPPOMETER

Sheryl was wonderful and so helpful, as always!! We split the grilled brie with fig jam & apples sandwich as an appetizer and it was fabulous!! We had the pork shank with Spatzle and it was AMAZING!! The valet guys are the best!!

Steven is a super waiter. Lunch was great. Loved being at the club for a fun friend lunch.

The whole night had a fun vibe to it from the set-up, the tapas offerings, and, of course, the comic. I like it when the Club executes new ideas and events for the members' enjoyment. It really shows how much you care about us.

Seeing friends. Jane is OUTSTANDING with the service she provides. She makes the dining experience exceptional.

The course is in fantastic shape. Kudos to all the groundskeeping staff for their fine work.

Janu and all the staff went above and beyond to help make this event so successful! We were thrilled with how everything turned out!

Alyssa Sollenberger was awesome!

Several new staff members -- all seem like awesome additions to our community. Service was quite strong with great balance of communication and breathing room.

The professional approach that Hannah Schmitt displayed with my guest.

The meal was sooo good. Alex said it was one of the best he has had, he got the picada steak (sorry for butchering that spelling). I loved the firecracker shrimp tonight! Sophie Berkman our server was a delight!

Wade is a fantastic teacher and always coming up with ways to make the lesson instructive and enjoyable.

Everything! The planters are fool proof, and I always learn so much at these events!

It was a pleasure to coordinate all the details of my Dad's Celebration of Life with Heather-Miller Kent. The event was perfect in every way. The talent and compassion of this BCC staff is world class! Thank You!

The service was fantastic during the Ravens games, we had so much fun watching the game and enjoying the company with our family.

I am enjoying how other members of the staff are stepping up to cover for Abby and it is a great way for the members and guests to see others responsible for the great BCC operation. Chris was a great MC last month - quick and clever. Nick also was a fun MC - funny and self deprecating.

Our night started out spectacular with our spicy margaritas, followed by a delicious meal- the specials were out of this world. We loved learning more about Amaya and her future-she was fantastic! Brent in the pro shop is a dear, and we LOVE our new BCC mugs- so much that Brent is so kindly ordering us more! Thanks always, BCC, for making our date nights memorable.

Nick Cannon and Rebecca Wyskiel did a great job!!! Seeing Nick outside his golf world was particularly interesting!!

I just wanted to let you know how helpful Dennis was today and how much he helped me out. I drove up with two very low tires and asked Ryan if he could put some air in them for me. Next thing you know Dennis is pulling two nails out of them and plugging them for me. I am so grateful, and it was so nice.

My playing partner was stung by a bee and is highly allergic, so we had to cut the round short. The staff was very engaged and helpful.

Our club is world class and that is why I am inviting three guests this weekend. My lesson was superb - Dave Hutsell is Yoda. And I walked from lesson to club fitting to try a club - no appointment. They were so accommodating. And then I played two holes by myself - what an incredible day. Thank you.

Being able to invite an old friend for dinner at BCC dining room is always wonderful. As members, we felt confident that we would have a good evening, and the staff, food and overall environment exceeded expectations.

Our waitress, Sharyl, was very attentive and helpful. On her own initiative, she prepared a very delicious and creative birthday dessert which took into consideration that two of us had gluten allergies. Sharyl's pleasant service combined with the delicious food and excellent weather made for a very, very enjoyable lunch.

Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands

Cover your coughs & sneezes with a tissue

Avoid close contact with those who are sick

As a best practice for your overall health, especially during influenza season, the CDC recommends that individuals receive the flu vaccine and engage in everyday, preventative measures, to prevent the spread of germs.

If you are sick with a flu-like illness, the CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24-hours after your fever is gone (without the use of a fever-reducing medicine) except to get medical care or for other necessities.

Clean & disinfect work spaces (door handles, computers, phones, etc.)

Wear a mask if you are not feeling well Masks are available upon request

Frequently wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (the length of singing Happy Birthday two times!). If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub
