OUR PORTFOLIO THE 95TH LIONâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S CLUBS CONVENTION In late June of 2013, more than 50,000 Lions Club members from more than 100 countries gathered together in Busan for the 95th Lions Clubs International Convention, one of the largest conventions of its kind in the world. For five days, Lions Club members took advantage of the conveniences the city offers and enjoyed the sights of Busan. It was the largest international event ever held here, and it was a resounding success for all in attendance. THE 13TH APEC SUMMIT In 2005, presidents and prime ministers from 21 Pacific Rim countries gathered in Busan for the 13th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit. To prepare for the event, the city constructed the Nurimaru APEC House, situated right on the coastline among the beautiful, natural landscape of Dongbaek Island. The opulent meeting halls and event rooms of the APEC House continue to be a popular convention choice for businesses and organizations due to their stunning views of the sea, nearby Haeundae Beach, and Busanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famed Gwangan Bridge. The 2005 APEC Summit was also the inspiration for the first Busan Fireworks Festival, an event that continues to memorialize the summit with its amazing displays each fall.

BUSAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL The most popular event held in Busan each year, the Busan International Film Festival, has quickly become the largest film festival in Asia. Since its inaugural event in 1996, the rise of the Busan Film Festival has given new life to the Korean arts community, especially in Busan. Since 2011, the Busan Cinema Center has served as both the headquarters and centerpiece of the festival, bringing a new level of opulence to the event and providing Busan with another state-of-the-art venue for both the arts and MICE related events.

THE ITU PLENIPOTENTIARY CONFERENCE In 2014, ministers from 193 nations and some 3,000 IT professionals from around the world made Busan their home away from home for the International Telecommunications Union’s 2014 Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-14). The three-week-long event, held every four years, is the world’s largest diplomatic event in the area of information technology and is the flagship event of the ITU, a specialized agency of the United Nations. The ITU returned to Busan’s BEXCO in 2017 with the ITU Telecom World ‘17 conference- a place where government and industry influencers gathered to connect government to SMEs and entrepreneurs, to network and explore investment opportunities, and to share ideas and best practices.

OUR PORTFOLIO ASEAN-ROK COMMEMORATIVE SUMMIT In December 2014, in honor of 25 years of successful dialogue with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Busan hosted the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit at BEXCO Convention Center and the historic Nurimaru APEC House. Approximately 3,500 people participated in the event, including businesspeople and dignitaries from all 10 ASEAN member states. They gathered to evaluate the relationship between ASEAN and Korea, to set future goals, and to address pressing global issues, including international security, global warming, and disaster response.

G-STAR GAMING CONVENTION G-Star is Korea’s largest gaming conference, providing a yearly showplace for game-makers to roll out their latest offerings. The yearly event, which is organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism and Busan Metropolitan City, continues to increase in popularity as tens of thousands of gaming fans crowd into BEXCO’s cavernous halls for a view at the latest technology, many dressed in the likeness of their favorite gaming characters. With so many of the gaming industry’s top-named companies, as well as all of the colorful and interesting crowds in attendance, G-Star is not an event to be missed.

2014 AMWAY INCENTIVE TOUR Amway brought approximately 3000 of its best to Busan via cruise ship in 2014. The Busan Tourism Organization sponsored tours and a reception dinner for the guests and provided support to the Amway planning team. The tour was a resounding success by all accounts.

2015 INTER-AMERICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK & INTER-AMERICAN INVESTMENT CORPORATION ANNUAL MEETING Marking 10 years of IDB membership, Busan hosted the 2015 IDB-IIC Annual Meeting in March 2015 at BEXCO Convention Center. It was the 56th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank and the 30th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Inter-American Investment Corporation. The meeting brought together 3,000 participants, including finance ministers, governors of central banks, businesspeople, financial experts, and journalists from 48 IDB member countries.

2013 27TH INTERNATIONAL POPULATION CONFERENCE In 2013, Busan was honored to host the 27th International Population Conference. Held over a week-long period, Busan’s extensive convention facilities and infrastructure were home to over 2,000 population scientists, students, and policy makers from 106 countries. The purpose of the conference was to present and share research and expand the knowledge base on population issues in formal and informal events.

2009 3RD OECD WORLD FORUM The OECD World Forum on Statistics, Knowledge and Policy was held in Busan in 2009. The forum brought together nearly 2,000 participants from more than 100 countries, including politicians and policymakers, opinion leaders, Nobel laureates, statisticians, academics, journalists, and representatives of civil society.

Since opening in 2001, BEXCO has stood out as the city’s premier MICE destination and is the heart of Busan’s convention district, known as Centum City. EXHIBITION CENTER I: SINCE 2001 The original BEXCO—Exhibition Center 1 and the Convention Hall—combine for over 26,000 square meters of convention, meeting, and conference space, spread over seven floors, including one underground level. BEXCO’s Exhibition Center 1 features huge, wide open spaces that can be divided up into halls suitable for any large- or medium-scale event. With 15 large meeting rooms on the second and third floors, there are also plenty of options for smaller events and more private meetings.

BIGGER AND BETTER EXHIBITION CENTER II: SINCE 2012 A little over 21,000 square meters in convention halls and meeting areas, Exhibition Center 2 opened in 2012 with resounding success. The massive expansion was finished just in time to host the yearly and renowned Lions Clubs International Convention, which accommodated an astounding 55,000 delegates from over 120 countries. Since then, BEXCOâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Exhibition Center 2 has continued to host a growing list of prestigious MICE industry events.

GROWING WITH BUSAN In 2012 BEXCO opened the futuristic Exhibition Center 2 and Auditorium. The expansion more than doubled BEXCO’s size, with approximately 30,000 square meters of additional halls and meeting space, all perfect for your MICE events. Situated right on the coast, the iconic BEXCO’s Nurimaru APEC House is nestled on Dongbaek Island among a beautiful, natural landscape accented by dense camellia and pine, scenic walking paths, phenomenal vista points, and an old-fashioned lighthouse. The opulent meeting halls and event rooms of Nurimaru, with their nearly 800-person capacity, continue to be a popular choice for businesses and organizations that are drawn by their stunning views. The Nurimaru APEC House was originally constructed as a meeting place for world leaders for the 2006 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference. Since then it has been used as a memorial and conference hall as well as becoming one of the city’s premier tourist destinations. Nurimaru combines both modern and traditional Korean architectural elements, with wooden floors and a roof that echoes the topography of Dongbaek Island itself. The building offers arresting views of Oryukdo Island and the Gwangan Bridge as well as nearby Haeundae Beach and Dalmaji Hill.

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTER DONG-GU | MARITIME MICE The Busan Port International Passenger Terminal opened in Busan’s Dong-gu in 2015. The terminal was built to symbolize Busan’s role as a maritime gateway city, and to create a world-class tourist attraction and convention facility for marine tourists and industry representatives from all around the globe. One of the crown jewels of Busan’s massive North Port Redevelopment Project, the terminal boasts state-of-the-art MICE facilities, with nearly 14,000 square meters of floor space located on the gorgeous building’s scenic 5th floor—enough to easily accommodate almost any event. Busan has long been a global hub for the marine industry, and the North Port has a history that goes back nearly 150 years. Shipbuilding companies have been vital to the economy here, as well as the economies of nearby cities like Ulsan and Geoje Island. The Busan Port International Passenger Terminal gives event organizers an ultra-modern, convenient, and centrally located venue where visitors can also gain easy access to some of the nearby companies and facilities that make Busan a world leader in the maritime world. Scheduled to be completed in 2019, and with an investment of over $8.5B, the 1.5 square kilometer North Port Redevelopment Project will be expanded to include piers 1,2,3 and 4 of the Busan Port, commerce and marine finance facilities, an eco-friendly marina, a maritime culture district, and some luxurious high-rise apartment buildings. Upon the project’s completion, the Busan Port International Passenger Terminal promises to be a favorite among Busan’s MICE facilities.

The centerpiece of the Busan International Film Festival, Asia’s largest and most acclaimed annual film gathering, the Busan Cinema Center is an architectural marvel designed by famed Viennese firm Coop Himmelb(l)au. The Cinema Center’s cantilever roof is the world’s largest, soaring over an outdoor plaza capable of seating 4,300 people. The exterior boasts 42,600 LED lights synch -ronized to create magnificent visual displays, all right in the heart of Busan’s conference district. While mainly known as one of the world’s best places to watch a film, the Busan Cinema Center’s Haneulyeon

SEA LIFE BUSAN AQUARIUM HAEUNDAE | UNDER THE SEA

The Busan ‘Sea Life’ Aquarium, situated right in the middle of Haeundae Beach, houses over 250 marine species and has some 10,000 aquatic animals and fishes on display. This state-of-the-art facility is one of Korea’s top aquariums and the top tourist attraction in the Haeundae area, covering an area of 36,000 square meters spread over three underground levels. There are dozens of exhibits with a wide assortment of aquatic life, including penguins, otters, jellyfish, and even piranha. Go for a shark dive, or gaze at the scene through the floor of a glass-bottomed boat. There is also a touch tank for a hands-on look at life below the sea. The main tank contains 3 million litres of water and can be viewed through large acrylic windows or from the 80-meter underwater shark tunnel. The tunnel experience resembles a walk along the ocean floor, as sea creatures, including sharks of all sizes, swim overhead. While the Busan Aquarium is a popular destination for families and tourists alike, it also provides a unique meeting experience. The Busan Aquarium hosts meetings and seminars where up to 300 guests can marvel at the undersea world while meeting inside or at either end of the shark tunnel.

In 2008, global wire manufacturer Kiswire, the company that provided the cables for Busan’s own Gwangalli Bridge as well as countless projects around the world, shut down production at its Suyoung factory. The company quickly decided to turn the site into a multicultural complex that would bring people, art, and culture together. F1963 was born. Construction of “F1963” was completed in 2016. “F” stands for “Factory”, and “1963” is the year that the factory first opened for production. The site’s 45 years of history can be seen throughout the buildings. Conveniently located just across the river from Centum City, F1963 is ideally situated to incorporate into your MICE event. F1963 is the architectural brainchild of Cho ByoungSoo. His goal was to reinterpret the designs of the past, to recycle,

and to give the building a creative beauty that radiates from the regeneration itself. It now stands as an artful balance of the old and the new. The center of the facility was carved out to a build a grand courtyard. Front walls were removed and replaced with glass. The old concrete floors were used in landscaping and stepping stones, and the old wooden trusses that held up the roof have been used to make benches around the property. The Courtyard is an 872-meter square venue with modern projection, sound, and lighting gear. The Exhibition Hall measures in at 2,473 meters square and is ready to host 700 visitors. F1963 also houses the Terarosa Coffee Shop, the Yes24 used bookstore, Czech style brewery Praha993, and the popular Boksoondoga MakGeolli retailer.

THE BAY 101 HAEUNDAE | ON THE SEA

If you’re looking for the perfect place to host your MICE event, The Bay 101 is another of the many great options Busan has to offer. The Bay 101 features the luxurious Club101, which at 1200 square meters, will accommodate 500 visitors for your meetings, seminars, workshops, and conferences. Roof101 is a beautiful and scenic rooftop venue that houses 180 people and is great for outdoor concerts and speaking events. The Marine Hall and Gallery 101 are also great spots for your MICE events, accommodating 150 and 200 people respectively. All in all, The Bay101 has become a popular option for MICE visitors, having hosted events for Porsche, Jaguar, Samsung, and many others. Between meetings, step over for a full-course dinner at the facility’s Daedo beef restaurant. A staple in Korea, Daedo’s tender, pan-fried beef has delighted customers for over 50 years. If you and your group are more in the mood for something light, grab a bite at Fingers and Chat dining pub for some great fish and chips. The Busan Cultural Contents Complex opened in Haeundae’s Centum City in 2012 after a total investment of approximately 31 billion won. The massive nine-story building, which sits right next to the Busan Cinema Center, has a total floor space of 19,809 square meters.

There are several potential MICE facilities on site, including the 262-meter square CKL Complex Space, which can comfortably host up to 80 people. There are also meeting rooms for groups ranging from 12 to 30—all equipped for presentations and seminars.

Operated by the Busan Information Industry Promotion Center, the complex operates as a support facility for Busan cultural contents companies. Events like G-Star, IT Expo, and the Cloud Expo are also organized by the center.

Set between the scenic Dongbaek Island and Dalmaji Hill, Haeundae Beach is a must-visit area for anyone spending time in Busan. Opened in 1913 as Korea’s first official beach, Songdo Beach is particularly beloved for its night view and its famed sea diving board. Songdo first became popular in the 1960s for its scenic coastline and was the city’s first municipal beach. Over the following decades, it was damaged by frequent typhoons and subsequent sand loss, but a five-year restoration program, completed in 2005, has returned much of its original beauty, and its popularity with locals is everincreasing. Even more recently, Songdo Beach has received another facelift, with the addition of the wildly popular Busan Air Cruise cable car and Songdo Skywalk. Running from Songdo Beach to of Aman Park, the Busan Air Cruise is a modern cable car experience, offering 1.62 kilometers of unparalleled views, the longest of any marine cable car in Korea. The Busan Air Cruise is a state-ofthe-art, restored version of a line that ran from 1964 to 1988.

Cruising 86 meters above the water, riders can take in a panorama that includes Amnan Park, Songdo Beach, as well the coastline of Yongdo Island. It’s after dark, however, when the magic really happens; the lights of the bridges and city form a shimmering dreamscape that is not to be missed.

Located at the estuary of the Nakdong River and just 8 km from downtown, Dadaepo Beach is a great place to chill out and have a picnic, collect a few seashells, and go for a swim in the shallow surf. Just up the Nakdong—the longest flowing body of water on the Peninsula—is the best place in Korea to check out migratory birds feeding in the marshes all along the shore. The beach at its mouth is just under a kilometer long and is a relatively unknown spot for tourists due to its distance from the city center. Located on the island of Yeongdo, Taejongdae is a scenic park with great views from cliffs overlooking the sea. The name of the area comes from King Taejong Muyeol (604661), who was fond of practicing archery there following the unification of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. While you’re in Taejongdae, enjoy the trail-filled hills of evergreen forests and several attractions for tourists, such as an observatory, an amusement park, a lighthouse, and a cruise ship terminal. And whatever you do, don’t miss out on eating lunch or dinner at the BBQ seafood tents!

If you look west from Gwangalli Beach, you will see the beginnings of Igidae Park. Igidae is a popular place for hikers and nature lovers alike, where you can walk along the coast on a walking path, complete with suspension bridges built into the rocky cliffs of the ocean shore. The path takes you all the way to Oryukdo, where the Oryukdo Islands jut out into a span of never-ending ocean, and the lighthouse stands guard over the southern tip of Busan. BEOMEOSA TEMPLE GEUMJEONG | A PIECE OF HISTORY

Featured on CNN, as well as numerous other media outlets, Beomeosa has become a must-see tourist spot on nearly every visitorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s itinerary. This sprawling, historic temple is nestled in the foothills of the Geumjeong Mountain range. Over 1,300 years old, Beomeosa remains home to dozens of resident monks who quietly stroll the grounds amid the serene structures of spiritual history. Many of the original structures were razed by fire during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, during the seven-year Imjin War. While always a beautiful and peaceful spot, the best time of year to visit Yonggungsa Temple is April when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. GEUMJEONG SANSEONG GEUMJEONG | THE TOP OF THE CITY

Sanseong Village is nestled in a valley just over the summit of Geumjeong Mountain, and has become the perfect place to experience a taste of Korean country life right in the middle of Busan. The village is most famous as a culinary destination, with people heading up to feast on the village’s marinated black goat meat. This local delicacy is grilled, served up with a host of side dishes and usually washed down with the tasty Korean rice wine known as makgeolli. In addition to the savory goat, the village’s numerous little restaurants also offer country favorites such as baek suk (slow pressure-cooked chicken with ginseng and mountain herbs), dotorimuk (acorn jelly salad), dubu kimchi (warm tofu and kimchi), and pajeon (green onion pancake). A meal at Sanseong Village is a perfect way to wrap up a day on the mountain, and many of the eating establishments offer free shuttle service back down to Oncheonjang Station for their weary, full-bellied customers.

Jutting from the earth like a massive stone spine, Geumjeong is Busan’s largest mountain and premier hiking destination. Atop this mountain is a 17-km-long stone fortress, built in 1707 as a response to the Japanese invasion of Korea from 1592 to 1598. The fortress was essentially destroyed during the Japanese colonial occupation of the early 20th century, but much of it has since been rebuilt to its original glory. Strap on your hiking boots and spend a whole day trekking along the ridge of Geumjeong Mountain, savoring the expansive views of the city as well as soaking up the long history of the area. Hikers can reach the top via the expansive trail system accessible from most anywhere at the mountain’s base; for those keen on an easier ascent, try riding the famous orange cable car from Geumjeong Park in Oncheonjang.

Every large city has a piece of architecture that defines it. For Busan, that landmark is the Gwangan Bridge. The bold, gleaming structure is the undisputed crown jewel of the city’s collection. BUSAN BRIDGES AROUND BUSAN | FROM THE PAST TO THE FUTURE GWANGAN BRIDGE The Gwangan Bridge is one of the most spectacular locations in all of Busan. This suspension bridge, completed in 2002, spans a total of 7,420 meters, making it the second-longest bridge in the entire country. Voted the #1 tourist attraction in the city, the Gwangan Bridge serves the dual purpose of providing a picturesque skyline to the East Sea and a quick connection between the Suyeong and Haeundae districts of southeastern Busan. The bridge also serves as a host to the city’s very own fireworks festival, held in the early days of autumn each year. Whether you’re looking for a quick commute or a romantic backdrop to a picnic on the beach, the Gwangan Bridge is there to provide.

BUKHANG BRIDGE Majestically spanning its way across the waters just off of the Nampo area, the Bukhang Bridge is a beautiful site to see, adding yet another stunning bridge to join Busan’s iconic Gwangan Bridge in Gwangalli. At 3,331 km long, with a 2,217km approach bridge, the Bukhang Bridge crosses the waters of Busan Buk-port, stretching from Cheonghak-dong of Yeongdo-gu to Gamman-dong of Nam-gu. The massive bridge features two enormous towers that are kept in place by a 1,114km cable. While being an architectural marvel, the bridge also serves as a great addition to Busan’s ambitious infrastructure programs that continue to take shape all across the city.

YEONGDO BRIDGE

GEOGA BRIDGE

The Yeongdo Bridge, originally christened in November 1934, is Korea’s only drawbridge, while also holding the distinction of being the nation’s first span to connect the Korean mainland to Yeong Island, one of the many islands that make up Korea’s largest port city. It is also the only single-leaf bascule bridge in Korea.

The Geoga Bridge is a major part of the greater Geoje-Busan Fixed Link that connects the port city of Busan with the lucrative shipbuilding industries of Geoje Island. When first opened, this important link cut the travel time between the two areas from 3.5 hours to right around 40 minutes, giving the residents of Busan easy access to both the beautiful beaches of the island and to one of the largest shipyards in the country. The entire Fixed Link crosses three islets and includes one the longest and deepest immersed concrete tunnels in the world. The severely shortened travel time allows Busan residents to enjoy a tranquil weekend getaway on the beach or a much quicker work commute to Geoje’s booming shipbuilding industry.

The bridge carries deep symbolic meaning from a time when the country was suffering through the devastation of the Korean War. During that time, war refugees from around the nation descended on the city, which came to be known as the Pusan Perimeter. NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM Located on Yeongdo (Yeong Island), and inaugurated on July 9, 2012, the lavishly designed museum recorded over two million visitors in its first year of operation as revelers came to witness the abundance of excellent exhibitions which has included more than 12,000 maritime relics, as well as a replica of the ‘Joseon Missional Ship’ which, at half the size of the actual ship, is the largest of its kind in South Korea. The museum offers eight permanent exhibition halls, a special exhibition hall, and a children’s exhibition hall designed with curious kids in mind. There is also a library, an aquarium, a grand auditorium, an outdoor performance stage, and a stunning 4D theatre.

BUSAN SEA LIFE AQUARIUM Korea’s largest aquarium is conveniently located right on the shores of scenic Haeundae Beach. The main tank on level two houses sharks and rays and thousands of other fish in 3,000 tons of water. Enjoy an underwater stroll through the concave shark tunnel that puts you right in the middle of the tank without getting wet. A DAY ON DALMAJI DALMAJI | BEAUTY ON THE HILL

DALMAJI MOON VIEWING ROAD Dalmaji-gil, or Moon Viewing Road, separates Haeundae Beach from its northern sister, Songjeong Beach. The road is great for walking or driving, as it winds along the hillside just above the ocean’s edge and is considered one of the most scenic areas of the city. Dalmaji-gil is surrounded by pine trees on one side and an array of restaurants and cafes on the other, offering up a perfect balance of natural and man-made diversions. It’s an ideal place to linger over a long lunch or a coffee, gazing out through the curtain of pine trees onto the placid, blue ocean beyond. Just off Dalmaji-gil is the Haewoljeong, or Moon Viewing Pavilion. This wooden structure was built in 1997 as an observation platform for the moon and pays tribute to an old folktale about two lovers who were married nearby. And you don’t want to miss a leisurely stroll through the wooded hills on Moontan Road, a 2.5-km trail that hugs the scenic shoreline. Dalmaji Hill has also become well-known for its Saturday Market, featuring arts and crafts made by local artisans. The free market runs every Saturday, March through the first of November, from 2 to 9 p.m.

DALMAJI GALLERIES & CAFES Busan’s seaside locale, along with its numerous hills and laid-back ambiance, is sometimes reminiscent of the city of San Francisco. Nowhere can we see this more than on Dalmaji Hill, which rises up from the far end of Haeundae Beach and offers stunning views of the East Sea. Dalmaji is a residential neighborhood that’s also home to a number of specialty restaurants, cafes, bookstores, and art galleries. It’s a terrific place to spend the afternoon, offering a taste of both the bohemian and the chic, while often bathed in sunlight and the crisp smell of the ocean breeze. Many of the galleries also double as cafes, and vice versa, with guests enjoying a coffee or tea as they take in works of art. And no visit to Dalmaji is complete without popping into the Dalmaji Mystery Library, the only one of its kind in Korea to solely stock mystery books. When the US Army vacated Camp Hialeah in 2006, the city of Busan was suddenly left with a massive plot of land smack dab in the middle of town. Rather than open it up for commercial development, city planners wisely decided to turn it into a space for everyone to enjoy, and Busan Citizens Park was born. The park boasts huge tracts of woodland and sweeping lawns. As the true lungs of the city, it was created for both locals and visitors alike, offering clean air and serenity in the midst of the hustle and bustle of urban life. The park is bursting with greenery, containing over one million trees and bushes made up of 97 species. Its facilities include an information center, a park history center, two free-flowing streams, fountains, meeting squares, kids’ play areas, a café, clean restrooms, a convenience store, and plenty of parking.

The park was constructed around five themes: Memory, Culture, Pleasure, Nature, and Participation. Its facilities are state-of-the-art, with CCTV guaranteeing visitors’ safety, and (in true Korean fashion) free wireless internet available throughout the space. Culture and History play an important role at the Citizens’ Park, and visitors can enrich their knowledge at the Culture and Art Village, the History Museum, or the Library. In addition, there are plenty of nice spots to enjoy a picnic, sit and chat with friends, or just lie down on the grass and take a nap. Perched on the edge of a 35-meter cliff, the Orykdo Skywalk allows visitors the opportunity to stroll high over the waters of the East Sea. The transparent bottom is made up of 24 thick plates of bulletproof glass, which make for a thrilling, yet very safe experience. The structure—shaped like a horse’s hoof—extends 15 meters over the rolling waves. Visitors can look down onto the water below, take in the view of the Orykdo islets, or on a clear day, gaze out onto the dark rise of Japan’s Tsushima Island in the distance. This skywalk provides one of the most perfect photo ops the city has to offer.

Located on Busan’s first municipal beach, the Songdo Skywalk is a 365-meter-long pedestrian bridge rising 5-6 meters above the sea. Unlike the city’s other straight skywalks, the Songdo Skywalk is curved, bringing to mind the shape of a dragon. The structure is made of metal and wood, with clear glass plates situated in the middle, offering strollers a view of the moving ocean beneath their feet. Visitors can snap photos of the surrounding beach, lighthouse, and small rock island known as Turtle Island, or just take in the sweet ocean air as they stride along this impressive man-made trail.

Named for the five submerged rocks below, the Daritdol Observatory, or “Stepping Stones Observatory”, is Busan’s third and newest skywalk. The platform is situated next to the old fishing village of Cheongsapo in Haeundae and stretches 72.5 meters out and 20 meters over the sea, making it the highest such attraction in the city. This skywalk is anchored into the rock face itself and was built with a half-moon glass bottom for a riveting view of the ocean. Visitors can bask in the area’s rugged coastal beauty, or just savor the picture-perfect sunrises and sunsets that this spot is famous for.

Sea meets stone at Taejongdae, the iconic nature park that sits on the southern tip of Yongdo Island. This official city monument and the area’s new observatory offer jaw-dropping views, walking paths, rugged cliffs, and pine forests. It’s must-see for anyone visiting Busan. Taejongdae has been a special place in the hearts of Koreans for centuries. It was named for King Taejong MuYeol (604-661), the 29th king of the Silla Kingdom who considered it the best place to practice archery in the whole of the kingdom. While no longer a place to shoot arrows off of bluffs, the splendors of this remarkable piece of land can be enjoyed by all, free of charge. Taejongdae is most famous for its stone beach, where visitors can stroll, take shots of the landscape, or tuck into fresh seafood at one of the little tents at the ocean’s edge. It’s also home to a lighthouse and a newly constructed observatory that looks out at the sweeping seascape. Sinseon rock sits under the lighthouse, where it was said that gods and goddesses came down to relax in front of the waves. There is also a cruise terminal where visitors can embark on a boat tour, lending them a view of the park’s magnificent cliffs from the perspective of the sea. To top it all off, there’s a temple that houses a golden Buddha, and visitors curious about Taejongdae’s ancient past can scan the rocky shore for actual dinosaur footprints which have been preserved over millions of years.

Rising 120 meters from its base at Yongdusan Park, Busan Tower is one of the city’s most recognizable structures. Served by two high-speed elevators, the tower offers a bird’seye vista of the city harbor, Yongdo Island, the four bridges that serve it, as well as the clusters of neighborhoods stretching beyond. The view from the top is especially impressive at night when the urban landscape below comes alive as a glittering tapestry of lights.

The surrounding Yongdusan Park is a gathering place for people of all ages, and no trip to Busan is quite complete without a visit. Aside from the Busan Tower, the park’s most famous attraction is a statue of Admiral Lee Sun-Shin, the brilliant naval tactician who inflicted massive losses on the Japanese Navy during the Imjin War of the late 1500’s.

The tower was opened in 1973 and is considered the heart of Busan’s original downtown. Its design echoes traditional Korean architecture, with a top inspired by the crown of the Dabotap Pagoda of Bulguksa Temple in Kyungju.

The park is also home to the Museum of World Folk Instruments, a two-story building that features musical instruments from around the world made of every imaginable material--from gourds to human bones—and even rat skin. This museum is more than just relics behind glass: visitors are encouraged to handle and even have a hand at playing everything on display. If boats are more your thing, the park also hosts an Exhibition Hall of Model Boats, with over 80 models of sea craft, from the traditional to the very cutting edge of naval military design.

It is easy to spend hours upon hours wandering around the main streets and back alleys of Nampo-dong. Despite the fact that Nampo is home to countless great restaurants, the fare that has garnered the neighborhood the reputation of being a foodie’s paradise is the street food. Lines form around some of the more popular food stalls, such as those serving the famed hotteok, a sweet fried pancake stuffed with brown sugar and sunflower seeds. Carts offer a wide array of snacks, including mandu (dumplings) and pajeon (scallion and seafood pancakes). Locals know the area as a premier destination for seafood, and the thought of a trip to Cheongsapo for jogae gui will set any Busanite’s mouth watering.

MIPO Set on the eastern end of Haeundae Beach, Mipo offers up a wide variety of seafood options. Hoe (pronounced hway) is the order of the day in Mipo—big plates of colorful raw fish that’s as fresh as fresh can be.

JAGALCHI Busan’s world-famous seafood market, Jagalchi offers up everything under the sea. Best known as a market, a stroll through the area will also reveal an endless selection of small, family-run seafood restaurants where you can sit and take in the traditional bustle of the market while you dine.

MILLAK Located just off the eastern side of Gwangalli Beach, Millak features the Millak Hoe Center, where visitors can watch fishermen reel in their dinner from the docks. Restaurants on the upper levels of the center overlook the beach and serve up a wide assortment of raw fish (raw sea bream, raw flat fish, raw rockfish, raw flounder, and more), as well as spicy fish stews like haemultang. GAMCHEON CULTURE VILLAGE This scenic area has become one of Busan’s most popular tourist attractions and is a must-see during your stay here. Get lost in the myriad of colorfully painted houses laid out along a maze of alleyways and back streets, all nestled in scenic foothills. The locals have dubbed it “Korea’s Machu Picchu,” but Gamcheon Culture Village has a flavor all its own that makes it like no other place in the world and a great area to spend an afternoon taking in its unique mural-painted walls.

ANCHANG VILLAGE Originally constructed as a shanty town for refugees during the Korean War, Anchang Village offers a vivid view into Busan’s past. The village is literally built right into the mountainside with a rabbit-warren of narrow al-

leys winding through the precipitously placed buildings. As you approach the village, you feel transported back in time, as the modern gives way to the old. Like Maechukji and some of Busan’s other old neighborhoods, Anchang has also become well-known for its folk art, with sculptures and multihued murals gracing the walls and sides of the old, yet charming, ramshackle houses. The village is accessible via the small local bus that leaves from Beomil-dong Station, Exit 5.

MAECHUKJI VILLAGE Recognizable to some as the setting for the Korean film “Ajosshi,” Maechukji Village is one of several aging, less ritzy neighborhoods in Busan that has reinvented itself as a destination for murals and folk art. Originally a resting place for horses and riders during the Japanese colonial period, the land was eventually reclaimed and a living village was constructed. Maechukji Village is located in Beomil 5-dong, just a short walk up the hill from Jwacheon Subway Station, Exit 4.

BUSAN MUSEUM OF ART Opened in 1998, right in the heart of Busan’s MICE District, the Busan Museum of Art has become a centerpiece of the Busan arts community. Spread over five floors, this government-run museum offers exhibition halls, a text archive, an A/V hall, and educational facilities—all of which are dedicated to the promotion of the arts in Busan. Before going inside, be sure to take a long stroll around the magnificent sculpture garden that surrounds the building.

BUSAN MODERN HISTORY MUSEUM The building housing the Busan Modern History Museum was once used as the Busan branch of the Oriental Development Company during the Japanese occupation of Korea. The Busan city government converted this building, a symbol of aggression and a site of painful history, into the Busan Modern History Museum in order to educate citizens and visitors alike about Busan’s long, and sometimes tumultuous, history.

BUSAN MUSEUM Since its 1978 opening in Daeyeon-dong, Busan Museum has been serving to preserve and develop traditional Korean culture as well as to bring international cultures to the people of Busan. In 2002, the museum was renovated and expanded to modernize the facilities, which are divided among its three floors of exhibition areas. Exhibits offer great insight into the long history of Busan and the surrounding area. The museum also includes a serene sculpture garden on its beautifully landscaped grounds.

UN MEMORIAL CEMETERY AND PEACE PARK The only United Nations cemetery in the world, the UN Memorial Cemetery and Peace Park sit adjacent to the Busan Museum in Daeyeon-dong. Dedicated in 1966 to honor UN soldiers from 16 countries that were killed in battle during the Korean War, this serene park spreads across a grassy plain of 135,000 square meters. There are many annual events held here, including April’s Tributary Ceremony of the Veterans of the Korean War, May’s American Memorial Day, June’s Korean Memorial Day, and October’s UN Ceremony Day.

BUSAN NATIONAL SCIENCE MUSEUM Located just north of the city in Gijang-gun, the Busan National Science Museum will inspire the inner scientist in all of us. This new, 24,000 square meter complex houses a planetarium with a 17-meter fixed dome, an actual astronomical observatory, an optical observatory where guests can gaze through an array of smaller telescopes, as well as a permanent exhibition hall dedicated to the automotive, aviation, shipbuilding, and nuclear power industries. Though the museum can be enjoyed by people of all ages, it is specially set up for the benefit and education of kids, with a Children’s Science Hall and Camp Hall offering hands-on experiences for all of the young visitors who come through its doors. CINEMA STREET Bookended by a massive sculpture of a film crew in action, the Marine City “Street of Cinema” is an 800-meter walkway celebrating the art of motion pictures. BIFF SQUARE BIFF Square is located in the heart of the city’s Nampo-dong district and is the place where, in 1996, the world famous Busan International Film Festival was born. BUSAN IS ON THE MAP AS A DESTINATION FOR SAILING ENTHUSIASTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD SONGJEONG BEACH Busan is a hotbed for marine leisure activities. Songjeong Beach serves as the nesting ground for Busan’s surfing community, where surfers catch waves along the pristine, uncrowded shore. GEUMJEONG CYCLE RACING The Geumjeong Velodrome was constructed in 2002 for the Asian Games in Busan and has hosted regular cycle racing ever since. Spectators can observe the fast-paced racing and even place bets on the outcome. The Velodrome is just one part of the multi-faceted Geumjeong Sports Park, which also includes tennis courts, inline skating and bike lanes, as well as a sports center.

GIMHAE RACECOURSE PARK Built for horseback riding events for the 2002 Asian Games, the Busan Gyeongnam Horse Racing Park officially opened to the public in 2005 and has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists. The park contains three sand tracks and grandstands that can hold up to 30,000 spectators. Races are held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with a total of 12 races a day. Visitors can sit back and watch the races as well as spice things up by wagering on the action. The park is primarily a family destination and is equipped with an ecological park, a childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s horseback riding site, flower gardens, and the largest inline skating and cycling lanes in all of Korea.

SAJIK-DONG | KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL

THE SPECTACULAR, CIRCULAR, WHITE STRUCTURE HAS A CAPACITY OF 53,000 ASIAD Busan’s Sajik-dong is the city’s sporting heart, with several state-of-the-art complexes dotting the neighborhood. The centerpiece is Asiad Stadium, which was constructed for the 2002 Asian Games. It was the site of many of the track and field events as well as the venue for both the opening and closing ceremonies. The stadium also hosted several games during the soccer World Cup that same year, including host country Korea’s 2-0 victory over Poland. The looming, circular white structure has a capacity of over 53,000 and conjures images of a futuristic world. One gets the impression that the whole thing could be a massive spaceship awaiting orders for takeoff. Asiad Stadium has primarily been used as a soccer venue, but these days it has gained new popularity as the venue for Busan’s One-Asia Festival. The One-Asia Festival is a celebration of “Hanryu,” otherwise known as the “Korean Wave”. During this fall festival, which has become hugely popular with overseas visitors, the stadium comes alive with Korea’s brightest popstars and cultural icons. The Asiad is also the headquarters and home field for the Busan IPark, the city’s professional soccer team, which is part of the 14-team K League Classic, Korea’s top flight league. The season runs from early March through November, and tickets are readily available and usually inexpensive.

LOTTE GIANTS GAMES ARE MORE THAN JUST SPORTING EVENTS: THEY ARE OPEN AIR PARTIES Nothing says “Busan” like the Lotte Giants baseball team. The Giants make their home in Sajik Stadium, which boasts the largest capacity in the Korean Baseball Organization. Since opening in 1985, Sajik has become a second home to over 30,000 of the biggest baseball fans on the Peninsula. Ticket prices are as low as 7,000 won, and it’s just a short walk from Line 3 of the Busan subway system, making these games very accessible for the entire family. Though the stadium occasionally hosts concerts and other events, it is, above all, a baseball destination. And Lotte Giants games are more than just sporting events: they are open-air parties enjoyed by old-time residents and visitors alike. Pack a picnic or enjoy a big box of chicken at the stadium; just make sure to come a little early and enjoy the pregame festivities outside the ballpark. How to get there: Sajik Stadium can be reached by subway line 3. Get off at Sports Complex Station and go out Exit 9. It’s a short walk from there, situated just north of Asiad Stadium. Established in 1937 in Yeongdo, Busan, Hanjin Heavy Industries was the first shipbuilding company in Korea, paving the way for what is now one of Korea’s most thriving industries. Since building Korea’s first steel cargo ship in 1938, Hanjin has gone on to be selected as the best shipbuilder in the world for 23 consecutive years (1992-present). SAMSUNG HEAVY INDUSTRIES Samsung Heavy Industries now stands as the world’s largest shipbuilding company. The Geoje Shipyard, established in 1974 on a site of 3 million square meters, is the largest shipyard in the world. BUSAN INTERNATIONAL FINANCE CENTER The Busan International Finance Center (BIFC) is Korea’s third tallest building. It’s a site to see as it shoots up from the center of the city near Seomyeon in Munhyeon-dong, rising 63 floors to where it tops out at 289 meters. The BIFC is home to private and public financial enterprises including the Korea Exchange (KOREX), the Korea Asset Management Corporation, the Korea Securities Depository, the Korea Housing Finance Corporation, and Korea Southern Power. From the building’s 63rd floor observatory, one has an unobstructed view of most of the city from Nam-gu and Dong-gu to Busanjin-gu, Suyeong-gu, and Yeonje-gu. People will also enjoy views of Hwamyeong and Baekyang mountains, as well as the Gwangalli Bridge. The building was constructed in order to establish a financial cluster with niche financial functions for the logistics, shipping, and fisheries industries. With support from federal and local governments, the Busan International Finance Center (BIFC) was designed to maximize convenience for its tenants, and the massive complex combines financial services, cultural facilities, and retail establishments to generate a lively atmosphere.

NORTH PORT REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT Busan’s North Port, with more than 130 years of history, is being transformed forever in a bid to provide pleasant leisure facilities to citizens and to make the North Port a high-end tourist destination. With the transfer of the bulk of the container shipping industry from Busan’s North Port to Busan’s New Port, the North Port’s 1.5 million square meters of land is being rebuilt into an international waterfront area equipped with modern infrastructure for high-tech businesses, maritime tourism, and recreation. The Busan Port International Passenger Terminal has been a great addition to the area, and construction of other facilities continues to this day.

EAST BUSAN TOURISM COMPLEX The East Busan Tourism Complex promises to be a huge boon to the city’s tourism industry when it is completed in 2019. The project, first introduced in 1999, has picked up steam over the last couple of years as construction has begun to be completed on key elements of the 3.5 million-square-meter oceanside site. The Hilton Busan set up shop in the summer of 2017 as the hotel giant looks to capitalize on all the tourism infrastructure currently under construction and in the pipelines. The Lotte Premium Outlet shopping center is ready for business with all of the best brands and entertainment facilities. The Busan International Science Center also opened its doors in the summer of 2017. An amusement park, sports and leisure complex, and a golf course have all broken ground, and upon opening, the area promises to be a prime destination for domestic and international tourists alike. Lotte Mall is the newest addition to Busan’s shopping landscape, having just opened in Gijang’s East Busan Tourism Complex in December 2014. GUKJE MARKET Gukje Market is set in from Busan’s storied harbor in Nampo-dong. “Gukje” means “international” in Korean, and the goods offered up here reflect this. The complex is a maze of side streets and alleys, all packed with vendors hawking steaming street food, clothing, gifts, electronics, hardware, and Korea-themed souvenirs. The market draws a clientele from such far-flung destinations as New York, Toronto, London, Sydney, and Vladivastok. spring forth beneath the market’s covered roof, making it a hidden treasure that’s easy to miss among the hustle and bustle of its two more famous neighbors (Gukje and Jagalchi). Kangtong is where the locals come to shop for their kimchi, tofu, fresh meat, fruit, vegetables, and seafood as well as cooked dishes and traditionally prepared delicacies. This market is always humming and is just enough off the tourist loop to offer up some real surprises, including such culinary treats as handmade noodles (son kalguksu), grilled eel (jangeo gui), and for adventurous eaters: fried pork intestines (gopjang). No trip to Busan is complete without time spent at Jagalchi, where you can literally taste the town’s history on your tongue. Morning is the best time to visit this legendary seafood market—since that’s when many of the fishermen arrive with their fresh catches, though stopping by in the afternoon or evening will never disappoint. A stroll down Jagalchi’s main concourse will open your eyes to the bounty of the sea, splayed out in all of its scaly, finned, and tentacled glory. This is a real, living, breathing seafood market, where customers can walk straight into the middle of the action. Salty merchants—mainly hardy old women—slice fish, shuck oysters, skin eels, haul ice, and corral live octopus with the grace and assuredness of seasoned experts. HAEMUL PAJEON While jeon is often described as a Korean pancake, it is never sweet like the popular Western breakfast food, and in place of sugary syrup, jeon is served with a spicy soy sauce for dipping. Haemul pajeon, a Busan favorite, is a hearty ‘pancake’ mix with a healthy dose of green onions and mixed seafood—most commonly octopus, squid, and shrimp..

HOE Hoe (pronounced “hway”), which is simply thinly sliced raw fish, is another standout Busan delicacy and can be found in most of the beach neighborhoods as well as in the famed Jagalchi Market. Most places that offer hoe allow you to choose a live fish (commonly skate, yellowtail, or mackerel) from the tank and then serve it to you filleted within minutes, served with ssamjang (soybean paste) and lettuce wraps.

DWAEJIGUKBAP Dwaejigukbap is a simple but hearty pork soup with rice. The soup itself is quite mild in flavor, but it’s served with condiments such as ssamjang, onions, and hot peppers so that each patron can season it to his or her taste.

MAKGEOLLI WITH JEON, HONGHAPTANG & DUBU KIMCHI While most restaurants specialize in a particular food, there are several foods that center around drink, particularly makgeolli (chilled, fermented rice wine). Most makgeolli houses, which are often characterized by wooden decor and picnic-style tables, offer several variations of jeon (pancakes). Other popular dishes served in makgeolli houses include honghaptang, steamed mussels broth served with spicy red pepper paste and dubu kimchi.

STREET FOOD Street food is ever-present in most neighborhoods with heavy foot traffic. The most popular street food establishments are simple open-air storefronts, usually offering dukbokki, which are rice cakes in spicy red pepper sauce, twigeum (or tempura in Japan), and gimbap. Gimbap is, without a doubt, Koreaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most popular snack food. Traditionally composed of ham, crab sticks, radish, and egg, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wrapped in rice and seaweed and cut into bite-sized portions. Bungeoppang, warm, delicious pastries stuffed with sweet red bean paste, are easy to recognize by the fish shape they are molded into.

EOMUK Busan is famous for it eumuk. Sometimes referred to as Korean fish-cake, eumuk is a processed seafood product made of ground white fish, potato starch, sugar, and diced vegetables. It is served on a skewer and eaten as a staple of any dukbokki street food meal, and is also a key ingredient in a good gimbop. It is also a popular ingredient in several varieties of soup.

SAMGYETANG Samgyetang, a whole young chicken with ginseng and jujubes in a clear broth, has a mild yet quite distinctive flavor. Despite being a hot soup, samgyetang is commonly eaten in the summer, as it is said to have healing properties that restore nutrients to the body lost through perspiration.

HAEJANGGUK Another dish touted for its healing properties is haejangguk—nicknamed ‘hangover soup.’ The flavorful broth is usually loaded with enoki mushrooms, scallions, sprouts, and often leafy greens. The centerpiece of the dish is pork, from the vertebrae of the pig, so tender that it practically melts on the tongue.

JOGAE GUI As the largest coastal city in Korea, it’s no wonder that Busan’s food landscape is heavily populated with seafood. Modest yet lively tents serving grilled shellfish abound in the seaside neighborhoods of Cheongsapo, Millak, and Taejongdae. Some tents specialize in a particular type of shellfish, such as jogae gui (grilled shellfish) or garibi (scallops), while many offer a mixed bag, including mussels and shrimp. The simplicity of the accoutrements—usually just butter, diced up onion, and peppers—allows for the briny flavor of the freshly shucked shellfish to take center stage.

KOREAN BARBECUE Perhaps the Korean cuisine that has had the farthest reach internationally is Korean barbecue. Though most barbecue restaurants offer a variety of cuts of both pork and beef, samgyupsal (pork belly) and galbi (ribs), are probably the two most popular traditional meats. These days, galmaegisal, another pork center cut, has become quite popular, as it is both extremely tender and inexpensive. Whatever kind of meat you opt for, Korean barbecue is as much about the experience as it is about the food. It’s quite gratifying to be able to choose how to adorn each piece of meat, cooked by diners to their own temperature preference. With the large array of condiments and banchan (side dishes), and wrapping the meat into either thinly sliced radish, lettuce, or sesame leaves, it’s possible for each bite to deliver a new and unique flavor combination.

FIND OUT WHY KOREAN FOOD IS GAINING POPULARITY AROUND THE WORLD CHINESE FOOD Busanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chinatown, located just across from Busan Station, has the largest selection of food from our neighbor to the west. Some Chinese dishes that have become popular with Koreans are jajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce), tangsuyuk (deep-fried sweet and sour pork), and jampong (spicy seafood soup). Chinese restaurants are among the few places you can order lamb, yang-gogi in Korean.

JAPANESE FOOD A lot of Japanese foods have been adopted into Korean cuisine, and vice versa. A prime example is tonkatsu, or fried pork cutlets, called dongkas in Korean. The most common variations of this crisp, savory dish are stuffed with mozzarella or smothered in a rich, brown Japanese-style curry. Izakayas, which are lively Japanese small-plate restaurants with skewers and wraps, have become extremely popular in university neighborhoods such as Pusan-Dae and Kyungsung-Dae. A seafood-loving city, Busan is also home to numerous sushi restaurants, located throughout the city.

INDIAN & THAI Traditional Indian fare can be found around town, most notably in the area surrounding the Sasang bus terminal. Haeundae, Pusan-Dae, Kyungsung-Dae, and Nampo-dong also boast excellent Indian food selections. Though Thai food hasn’t come to Busan on as large a scale, several noteworthy Thai restaurants have opened in recent years, and dishes such as pad thai and tom yum are appearing on menus in fusion restaurants and takeout noodle shops around town.

ITALIAN & MEXICAN Many of the more upscale eateries, especially in the areas framing both Gwangalli and Haeundae beaches, offer a selection of Italian pizzas, pastas, and risotto dishes. The number of chefs who have spent time abroad has grown, establishing a solid array of bona fide Italian cuisine. Mexican restaurants can also be found throughout the city and have been a welcome addition to Busan’s international food spectrum. Several excellent places, offering standard Mexican fare, have popped up in the neighborhoods of Seomyeon and Kyungsung-Dae.

Turkish food has enjoyed long-standing popularity in Busan, and there are always new Turkish restaurants opening around town. The most surefire way to procure a Turkish meal is to visit one of the kebab stands near the bar scene in the Kyungsung-Dae neighborhood after dark.

NORTH AMERICAN & RUSSIAN Many former expatriate English teachers have made a permanent home here, and of those, many have opened American-style bars and Irish pubs around town that offer excellent food. The Kyungsung-Dae, Haeundae, Gwangalli, and Seomyeon neighborhoods are home to a number of Western-style establishments, offering chicken wings, burgers, sandwiches, and other Western fare. Busan also has a lively Russian population. Though the streets across from Busan Station have been dubbed ‘Chinatown,’ the area is also known to locals as ‘Little Russia.’ This street, at the moment, is the only place in the city to get a bowl of borscht.

HALAL & TURKISH Home to a small but growing Muslim population, Busan has seen authentic halal food start to pop up, especially in the Geumjeong-gu area around the Busan Masjid. A number of Muslim outlets and halal restaurants surround the prominent mosque. BUSAN MEETING PLANNER

IN KOREA THERE IS NO MANDATORY LAST CALL OR CLOSING TIME HAEUNDAE Haeundae Beach is the most famous beach in Korea, and as such, the Haeundae area attracts big crowds every night of the week, especially during the summer months. Aside from major hotels like Novotel, Paradise, and Westin Chosun—which all host world-famous cuisine with international chefs at the helm—there are countless restaurants, bars, and nightclubs spread throughout Haeundae, all within a 10-minute walk from each other. Spend the evening hours in the busiest tourist destination in Busan, and finish the night off with a walk along the famous Haeundae Beach. In 2017, construction was completed on the Gunam-ro Culture Square. The Culture Square, occupying the street that runs perpendicular to the main entrance to the beach, is now host to a full slate of events year round. The Busan One Asia festival holds some of its K-Pop concerts there. The country’s best street-artists and buskers can also be found at Gunam-ro on one of the three busking stages, two music zones, or on the main-stage.

SEOMYEON Seomyeon is the meeting point for all three subway lines and serves as a hub for most of the bus lines in Busan. As such, it is a central entertainment district for locals and tourists alike. The Lotte Hotel and Casino acts as the area landmark and overlooks countless shops, restaurants, and bars that are bustling with patrons every night of the week. Korean barbeque, and other traditional fares, are spread throughout the meandering streets of Seomyeon, side-by-side with international chain restaurants like TGI Fridays and Bennigan’s. Open-air Korean food carts line the streets for a unique dining experience. The place to be for the 20-something crowd, Seomyeon is a great area for anyone looking to enjoy a night on the town, with no shortage of beer pubs, dance clubs, and noraebongs (singing rooms) to choose from.

GWANGALLI Gwangalli is most famous for its impressive evening view of the Gwangan Bridge. The bridge’s famous lighting system provides a perfect backdrop for a night out, and patrons have plenty of options to choose from. Gwangalli is famous for its seafood restaurants. The freshest in seafood can be savoured right off of the boat, where crab, sushi, hoe (pronounced “hway”), and jogae gui restaurants line the shore. You can also find Vietnamese, Italian, and Western restaurants along the waterfront. After dinner, sit and enjoy a coffee in one of the countless cafes overseeing the ocean, and then head to one of the many bars and nightclubs in the area. BIFF IS THE LARGEST GATHERING OF FILM LOVERS AND INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS IN ASIA. BUSAN COMES ALIVE WITH SCREAMING FANS AND CAMERA FLASHES. Every October, for one colorful and exciting week, filmmakers and cinema lovers from around the world descend on the city for the Busan International Film Festival, the largest gathering of film lovers and industry professionals in Asia. Though featured in different venues around the Haeundae Beach area, the Busan Cinema Center has been BIFF central since 2011. The stunning, $150 million cantilever structure is the largest of its kind in the world and was designed by award-winning Viennese architecture firm Coop Himmelb(l)au. The 30,000-square-meter center includes a 4,000-seat outdoor theater as well as four indoor screens.

BIFFâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S RISE TO THE TOP OF ASIA BIFF has grown into the largest film festival in Asia since it premiered in 1996. While itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s well-known for its wide selection of international films from around the world, its primary focus has been introducing new films by first-time directors, especially those from Asian countries. The popularity of the event, when the whole of Busan comes alive with screaming fans and camera flashes, has given rise to a rebirth of the arts community in the area, especially in the realm of filmmaking. Busan has become an increasingly popular shooting location, and arts education in the area has blossomed since the event began 18 years ago.

GWANGALLI EOBANG FESTIVAL —OUR FISHING TRADITION

BUSAN SAMNAK CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL

Held in late April every year, the Gwangalli Eobang Festival is the only festival in Korea that celebrates the folk customs of traditional Korean fishing villages. Eobang were cooperative fishing unions created during the Joseon dynasty in order to promote and encourage fisheries in the Suyeong area—the first commercial fishing region of Busan. This unique festival welcomes spring and celebrates the connection to the ocean so deeply felt by Busan citizens. Events take place day and night, primarily at Gwangalli Beach and locations around the Gwangalli area. Festival attendees can participate in traditional maritime practices, such as bare-handed fishing, fishnet dragging, and jindueohwa (torchlight fishing). Other festival highlights include fireworks, lantern-lighting ceremonies, and the area’s glorious avenues of cherry blossoms. Make sure you take the time to visit some of the many raw fish restaurants around the beachfront to truly enjoy the spirit of Eobang.

In early April, the trees of southern Korea explode in a flurry of cherry blossoms. It’s truly one of the highlights of the year, and the area of Samnak in Sasang-gu celebrates this harbinger of spring with one of the most beautiful walking trails in all of Korea.

The Busan Samnak Cherry Blossom festival takes place in the early days of April. There’s food, drink, live entertainment, and, of course, cherry blossoms galore, attracting visitors from around Korea and abroad. It’s the perfect way to usher in the change of seasons.

YUCHAE FLOWER FESTIVAL Immediately following the Cherry Blossom Festival is one of Busan’s newer celebrations, the Yuchae Flower Festival. This festival is held in the western part of the city along the Nakdong River in Daejo Eco Park. In mid-April, this park blooms into the country’s largest canola field. Festivalgoers can spend hours wandering among the acres of brilliant yellow flowers. In addition, there are windmills and photo zones, along with busking performances and even horseback riding.

HAEUNDAE SAND FESTIVAL —ART IN THE SAND Inspired by the white sands of Korea’s most famous beach, the Haeundae Sand Festival takes place annually during early June. First held in 2005, the main drawcard of the festival is the World Sand Sculpture Exhibition. Spectacular sand sculptures are created by local and international artists to amaze and entertain festivalgoers from Busan and around the country. Visitors are encouraged to experience the festival in three ways: ”See the sand, feel the sand, and enjoy the sand.” Festival events include a marathon, an airshow, fireworks, traditional Korean wrestling, and a vibrant street parade. A unique festival highlight is the hot sand bath, where visitors are buried in the sand to receive health and beauty benefits from the sand’s minerals.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL—HOLIDAY CHEER If you would like to get a taste of the look, the feel, and the spirit of Christmas in Korea, there is no better place than the Busan Christmas Tree Festival. Each holiday season, the Jung-du Gwangbok neighborhood of Busan’s Jung-gu district comes alive with a spectacular display of lights, ornaments, and the joy of Christmas revelers out on the town for a hearty dose of holiday cheer. The centerpiece of the festive street display is a 20-meter Christmas tree erected in the center of the three-way intersection at the heart of the Gwangbok-ro neighborhood. From there, brightly lit streets, decorated with trees shining with lights and ornaments, span throughout the area, allowing visitors to bask in the season’s glow as they walk the winter streets of Busan.

POLAR BEAR SWIM—A DEEP CHILL The Polar Bear Swim Festival was held for the first time in 1988 to celebrate the Seoul Olympics. After starting with only 100 participants taking the polar bear dip, the swim has since grown into one of Korea’s most popular outdoor winter events. The yearly swim, which occupies the top spot on BBC’s “Top 10 Unusual Winter Sports” list, draws well over 3,000 participants every year. AIR TRAVEL TO KOREA South Korea has 7 international airports, and while Busan enjoys a growing list of international direct flight access, most international flights take you to Incheon International Airport. It is the country’s largest airport, with connections throughout the world. This is also one of the the best-run and best-designed airports in the world—a pleasure to use.

TRANSPORTATION

Incheon International Airport is served by most international airlines. While the domestic Korean Air and Asiana offer the most flights, there are daily flights from dozens of other operators. Busan’s own Gimhae airport has international connections to China, Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Gimhae also has daily flights directly from Seoul Incheon for passengers. A massive expansion is in the works,

and when finished, Gimhae will offer direct flights to a host of additional international destinations.

OCEAN TRAVEL TO KOREA Busan Port International Passenger Terminal is the largest seaport in Korea. There are frequent ferry connections from Busan to Japan. JR Kyushu’s Beetle hydrofoil service from Busan to Fukuoka is the most popu-

lar which travels to Fukuoka in just under three hours with up to five connections a day. It also offers service to nearby Tsushima. All other links are slower, overnight, ferries, such as Pukwan Ferry Company’s services to Shimonoseki. A Busan-Osaka ferry is operated by Panstar Line Co., Ltd. Incheon’s International Ferry Terminal 1 has services to several cities in China, such as Weihai, Dandong, Qingdao and Tianjin.

THE KTX & SRT: BUSAN BY RAIL

Busanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s International Gimhae Airport (IATA: PUS) is situated just 40 minutes from the main convention facilities in the city. There are separate Domestic and International terminals next to each other. Domestic flights are from Seoul Gimpo (IATA: GMP), Seoul Incheon Airport (IATA: ICN) and from Jeju Island (IATA: CJU). There are 35 weekly flights directly from Incheon to Busan for connecting passengers and 188 weekly flights to Busan from Seoul Gimpo. Plans for a massive expansion of the airport are in the works.

While getting to Busan from Seoul may seem like an inconvenience at first, many travelers are grateful to have the opportunity to use the KTX and the new SRT. These trains are marvels of modern transportation. The KTX makes the trip from Busan to Seoul in just 2 hours and 18 minutes. The SRT, using a slightly more direct route, makes the trip in just 2 hours and 9 minutes. Watch the scenic Korean landscape zip by at speeds of up to 305 kph (190 mph). Once arriving in Busan, you are just a short 30-minute ride from the main convention area of Centum City and Haeundae.
