recently read about a man named John Bunker who is what is known as an "apple hunter." Now my first reaction was to wonder why we would ever need an apple hunter. After all, you go to the grocery store and there, in the produce section, are apples. Surely, there is more to apple hunting than this. As it turns out, if you went back one or twohundred years, you would discover that there were all kinds of different apples, with different tastes and purposes: apples that were best in baking, apples that were ideal for cider, and others that were best for eating. After the industrialization of agriculture, grocery stores began selling only a very small variety of all the various kinds of apples there once were. Apples have been standardized, dumbed down, made boring, and we are almost completely unaware that there was a time when things were different. Bunker is from Maine, and he has made it his business to find and resurrect as many of the hundreds of different apples as he can: the Blue Pearmain, the Pound Sweet, the Kavanagh, Cox's Orange Pippins, Wolf River apples, and the Black Oxford. Although some varieties are now completely extinct, many hang on and can be found growing wild in the forest, or in someone's backyard. In one case, Bunker had heard of the Fletcher Sweet, an apple his research told him had grown in the little town of Lincolnville, Maine. He spoke to the local historical society about the Fletcher and put out flyers around town. After an article about Bunker's search was published in the local newspaper, he got a call from a 79-year-old man named Clarence Thurlow, who said he knew where there was a Fletcher tree.
2
Letter from the Editor
Thurlow led Bunker to a part of Lincolnville that was once called "Fletcher Town." There, at an abandoned intersection, was a gnarled old tree. "That's the tree I used to eat apples from when I was a child," said Thurlow. The tree was almost dead. It had one branch still living. Bunker cut a few shoots to take home, and grafted them on to rootstock, saving the Fletcher Sweet from oblivion so that future generations could enjoy it. For most people, shopping for a school or a curriculum is a lot like going to the grocery store looking for apples. There are only a small handful of varieties: Vocational Ed, STEM, and Design Tech. Those of us here at Memoria Press feel a little like Bunker. We have discovered that there was a time before educational industrialization when education was more than it is now. We have become education hunters, tracking down the great variety of books and ideas that were once taught in schools. We have discovered Latin, which served best for learning grammar, traditional arithmetic, which was ideal for pursuing high school mathematics, classical history, which once served to give us perspective on our own history, and classic literature, which not only had a great taste, but also trained our affections. If you have looked at our book selections, you have seen many lost classics, books that you haven't seen around in awhile, but which you remember because they were part of the educational tree you used to eat from when you were a child. We have grafted these books on to our own education rootstock and saved them from oblivion so that future generations can enjoy them. www.MemoriaPress.com

What makes our program classical and Christian? The Classical Core Curriculum teaches the traditional language and math skills of the liberal arts and familiarizes your student with the culture of the Christian West through the reading of classic history and literature. This Latincentered program is the same classical Christian education that American schools used until about the 1920s.
is it easy to customize my Classical Core Curriculum package? Of course! We make it easy for you to tailor our program so that your student can be at the right place in each subject, even if he or she is starting the program as an older student.
i'm switching from another program. Can i expect a smooth transition? Memoria Press' curriculum is comprehensive and easy to teach. Switching to an easier-to-teach program is never hard.
Will this program help my student in today's world? Classical education teaches students how to think and what to do. It is an education in wisdom and virtue. The mental and character training of classical education will better prepare your student for whatever he or she decides to do in life.
Classical Core Curriculum PRESChOOL
With simple daily lesson plans, answer keys, and teacher manuals, our program enables you to give your student a classical education. Our programs have been specifically written with the home and private school teacher in mind, so you can teach any subject, even if you don't know it yourself.
How do i know my student is getting a quality, well-rounded education? We emphasize the mastery of the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic in the early grades as a necessary foundation for later, more advanced study. With this solid foundation, your student can then tackle grammar and higher arithmetic in the middle grades, and more advanced study in language, mathematics, science, history, and literature in high school as a preparation for college.

7 PRINCIPLES FOR TEAChING
LATIN T

here are a lot of good reasons for thinking that Latin should be restored to its former place of honor as the basic subject in the elementary years. In previous issues of The Classical Teacher, I talked about some of these. But knowing that you should teach it and knowing how to teach it are two entirely different things. How can a busy homeschool mom with no background in Latin hope to teach this sometimes difficult subject? I can answer this question. I can answer it because, at one time, I was a homeschool mother who didn’t know Latin. Here are some suggestions for how those who don’t know Latin can successfully teach it.

Most people overestimate what they can accomplish in one year and underestimate what they can accomplish in five. One reason for starting Latin in the third or fourth grade is to give you and your children plenty of time to learn this challenging subject. Which Latin program is right for your student? (see p. 22)
Prima Latina
an introduction to Christian Latin by Leigh Lowe Grades 1-4 Are you looking for a gentle introduction to Latin and a course that prepares your young student for a more advanced study of the language? Prima Latina is specifically designed for students and teachers with no Latin background. This course was developed for children in 1st-4th grades who are still becoming familiar with English grammar and wish to learn Latin at a slower pace and learn English grammar in the process. Its goal is to teach and reinforce an understanding of the basic parts of speech while introducing Latin. It benefits the student by teaching him half of the vocabulary in Latina Christiana I and grounding him in the fundamental concepts of English grammar, the key to Latin study.

First Form's grammar-based approach is perfect for the grammar stage student. It is also the best approach for any age because every student is in the grammar stage when he begins a subject. The syntax knowledge required in translationbased programs is a logic or rhetoric stage skill, which can easily overwhelm a beginning student unless he has first learned the grammar at a slow and gentle pace and is taught for mastery. Based on 20 years of teaching experience, the Forms series, beginning with First Form, has been used sucessfully by countless home and private schools because it helps the student make sense of what many consider a difficult subject. First Form is the ideal text for all beginners, grades 5 and up, or is a great follow-up to Latina Christiana I.

"I cannot tell you how amazing this program looks! My oldest son and I are currently in Second Form Latin and I can already see that what we've learned through MP and the Forms Latin series is going to make Greek a treat." - Jessica P.
First Form Greek Introduction to Ancient Greek by Cheryl Lowe & Michael Simpson Based on the revolutionary First Form Latin series, First Form Greek is written for parents and teachers with or without a Greek background. Its goal is to present the grammar so logically and so systematically that anyone can learn it. At the same time, we have adapted the Latin Forms series to account for the differences between Greek and Latin, such as the new alphabet, overlapping sounds, more variation within paradigms, and less regularity. First Form Greek overcomes these challenges with the addition of weekly vocabulary reviews, more frequent recitation, and an “expanded” dictionary entry for Greek verbs.
✓✓Six indicative active tenses of the omega verb ✓✓Present tense of the to be verb ✓✓Two noun declensions ✓✓First & second declension adjectives ✓✓Personal & demonstrative pronouns ✓✓Approximately 130 vocabulary words

LOGIC by Martin Cothran
The Original Thinking Skill
E
very subject that is systematic has a certain inherent order to it that dictates how it should be approached. In some subjects this order is more explicit than in others. In mathematics, for example, there is a widely acknowledged sequence of what should be learned and when it should be taught. In other subjects, however, such as history, there is much less agreement on how and when certain things should be taught. Mathematics is a systematic subject, whereas history is not. Although logic is a language art, it is more like math in this respect than history.
When to Begin the Study of Logic When should students begin to learn logic? The answer, of course, is: “When they are ready.” This can happen as early as seventh grade. It is at this age (about 12-13) that many children begin to seriously think about the reasons for things. They are no longer satisfied with the concrete, but are beginning to understand and appreciate abstract ideas. Most students have already encountered abstract ideas in mathematics. But, whereas mathematics deals with abstraction in the realm of quantitative relationships, logic deals with abstraction in the realm of qualitative relationships. We should point out that most modern logicians disagree with this. They view logic as an extension of math, and because of this, their logic—the system of modern logic—is very mathematical. But in this article we are discussing traditional logic, which is very different from modern mathematical or symbolic logic.

How to Teach Logic
Different Kinds of Logic
There are two main divisions in logic: formal logic and material logic. Formal logic studies the form of reasoning, whereas material logic deals with the content of reasoning. Formal logic is divided, in turn, between deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning. Deductive logic reasons from universal truths to particular conclusions. This is the kind of logic the student encounters when he studies arguments such as: All men are mortal Socrates is a man Therefore, Socrates is mortal
The argument begins with a universal truth, “All men are mortal,” and ends up with a particular truth: “Socrates is mortal.” Inductive logic reasons from particular facts to universal conclusions. Here is an example: Every mammal that has ever been examined has hair Therefore, all mammals have hair
Here, specific instances of mammals being found with hair is said to justify the general conclusion that all mammals have hair. Sophistical reasoning, a branch of material logic, studies fallacies that really belong in the various other parts of logic but are collected together for the convenience of being able to study incorrect reasoning under one heading. Let’s set forth several rules governing the sequence of logic study:

The Traditional Logic program is an in-depth study of the classical syllogism. In Book I, students will gain a basic understanding of terms, statements, and simple categorical arguments.
Traditional Logic II covers the figures of the traditional syllogism, forms of rhetorical arguments, kinds of hypothetical syllogisms, kinds of complex syllogisms, as well as relational arguments. The book also includes a wealth of examples of famous arguments throughout history. Some examples include:
(Each book can be used as either a one-semester or one-year course.)

Online Class (p. 31) Whether you want a follow-on course to Memoria Press’ popular Traditional Logic program, or simply an introduction to logic for high school students at a little more advanced level, this program is a valuable tool in teaching your student how to think.
Classical Rhetoric with Aristotle is a guided tour through the first part of the greatest single book on communication ever written: Aristotle’s Rhetoric. With questions that will help the student unlock every important aspect of the book, along with fill-in-the-blank charts and analyses of great speeches, this companion text to Aristotle’s great work will send the student on a voyage of discovery from which he will return with a competent knowledge of the basic classical principles of speech and writing.
The Ancient Art of Thinking • The ten ways something can exist • Five ways to say something about something else • The four definitional questions • Three questions to ask when analyzing an idea • Definition & classification
This is more than just a course in English or public speaking. It involves a study of the fundamental principles of political philosophy, ethics, and traditional psychology. A student learns not only the elements of a political speech, but also the elements of good character; not only how to give a legal speech, but also the seven reasons people act; not only how to give a ceremonial speech, but what elicits specific emotions under particular circumstances and why.
Case Studies in Logic • "What is a Heresy?" by Hillaire Belloc • "The Nature of Philosophy," by Vincent McNabb • "The Function of the Wise Man," by Thomas Aquinas • "Idols of the Mind," by Sir Francis Bacon
Practical Thinking Skills • How to mark a book or article • "How to Define" worksheet • "How to Classify" worksheet
An Introduction to First Philosophy Material Logic is not only a textbook on critical thinking skills, but an introduction to the basic rudiments of classical philosophy. Most of the book's content is derived from the metaphysical works of one of history's greatest thinkers: Aristotle.
• Sample weekly plan • Clear explanation of lesson components • Easy-to-read layout • Reading questions • Figures of speech • Evaluative & analysis questions • How to Read a Book questions • Case studies from Homer, Plato, Shakespeare, Lincoln, Marc Antony, and more

I wanted you to know that after two years of MP my daughters went back to private school. This is an "elite" school in our area. They were SO impressed! Both daughters received the history award. They are well known for their in-depth knowledge of their faith and love of classic literature. And, even though we didn't really "do" science while homeschooling, my oldest (for two years in a row) went very far in statewide science fair competitions. arrative accounts and musical commemorations follow in the wake of every disaster. From the Iliad and the Odyssey, written about events related to the Trojan War, to Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," literature and music have dealt with destruction and death. What great crime doesn’t have its own documentary? What great disaster doesn’t have its own anthem? There are at least twenty-four movie and television dramatizations about the sinking of the Titanic, and over a hundred songs. You can order The Great International Disaster Book on Amazon.com. And you can find a website called “The Natural Disaster Songlist.” We at least profess not to enjoy actual death and destruction, so what makes us like to read and sing about it? What so attracts us to books like Elie

Wiesel's Night, or songs like Georgie Fame's "The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde"? What was it about the blind bard in Homer's Odyssey who sings to Odysseus the story of his sorrows that somehow comforts him? When twenty-six people were shot by a gunman at a school in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012 (twenty of them children), the community did something similar to what the friends and families of the victims of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald did: They went to church. "In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed/In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral/The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times/For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald." The resort to religion is, in fact, the norm when it comes to responding to disaster. Why? When death and destruction assail us, what is it we seek that in a church we might find?

If God were perfectly good, then he would prevent evil; and if God were all-powerful, then he could prevent evil. But God has not prevented evil. Therefore, He either won't or He can't.
From a logical perspective, the argument is unanswerable. Once we admit the evil, we are faced with either rejecting the goodness of God or His omnipotence—neither of which a Christian can do. We could deny that evil exists at all, but that somehow seems less than realistic. The philosophical problem of evil is a philosophical question—asked by philosophers—requiring a philosophical answer—provided by philosophers. Its answer (if there is one) is sought only by people who are not themselves suffering.
A Riddle in the Dark
Darkness
Puts Evil in Its Place by Martin Cothran Let's think first about what we do not seek. Once news stations have repeated the video footage of the latest incidence of evil or suffering ad nauseum, they next invite the commentators in to put the events in some kind of perspective. In doing so, the viewer is encouraged to think of the event as an abstract or technical problem. First the psychologists are brought in, who analyze the problem in the clinical terms of science. They offer "treatment" to rid the sufferer of "grief" and to bring about "closure." When viewed in these terms, it is easy to view suffering as a disease from which we need to be cured. If we are allowed to think about the problem in more depth before the next urgent news story comes along, we can also think about it logically. We can try to seek an answer to the logical dilemma of evil:
1-877-862-1097
The problem of evil is, to steal a phrase from The Hobbit, a “riddle in the dark.” And psychologists and philosophers (at least modern ones) do not do well in the dark. They fly by day. These two approaches do not address the real problem. At least they do not address the issue with which people who experience suffering actually struggle. In fact, the vast majority of those who actually suffer evil can't even tell you what the psychological or logical issue is. And even if they know the path to a cure or the solution to the problem, they realize that both are unsatisfying. The psychological question of how to deal with suffering and the philosophical question of what to think about evil are not the questions parents and friends in Newtown or Fukushima or the Twin Towers asked themselves. The real question concerning evil is "Why is this happening to me?" This real question is not a psychological or logical question, but an existential one. We might even call it a metaphysical question. In the Biblical story, Job is dealing (whether he knows it or not) with the real question—"Why is evil happening to me?"—while his Comforters are dealing with the logical question—“How can there be evil and suffering in a world created by a good and all-powerful God?” His rationalist Comforters bring Job reasons. They assume that evil fits into an understandable logical scheme, in which the good are rewarded and the bad punished, and they demand that Job acknowledge this. But that would require Job to deny a truth that God has already affirmed—that he is a good man who does not deserve to suffer. The Comforters think Job's suffering must fit into their logical view of the world, but Job knows that it does not.
Light to the Darkness: How Literature How Puts toEvil Teach in Its Phonics Place 37
What Dostoyevsky is really pointing out is that When God speaks to Job out of the whirlwind, what we fear is not evil per se, but metaphysical chaos. He does not give him reasons for his suffering or an What scares us is not bad things; what scares us, to use explanation for why evil has come upon him. From that perspective, What most disturbs us about evil is not evil the deaths would have some place in a larger purpose itself. What most disturbs us about it is its seeming that would provide a metaphysical context that gives absurdity—that it seems a morally orderless meaning to the individual actions of the soldiers who abomination in what we think should be a morally can't see all this on the ground. ordered world. The Context of Evil A heroic death is more clearly part of a meaningful narrative, whereas a child being killed by a stray bullet seems random. When someone dies after a long, productive, meaningful life, we feel much differently than we do about a child who dies in infancy. In the former case there is no challenge to meaningf ulness; in the latter there is. This is why Dostoyevsky’s Ivan Karamazov chose cruelty to children as the paradigm case of evil in The Brothers Karamazov: On the surface, the rationalistic atheist Ivan is talking about the logical problem of evil. But more fundamentally, he is articulating to his brother Alyosha, a devout Christian, a universe without metaphysical order—a universe in which evil and suffering do not make sense and are out of anyone’s control.
38 Light Heading to theGoes Darkness Here
Sam was seeking a moral context in which he and Frodo could locate their experiences. They gained comfort from knowing what story they were in. “We are willing to endure suffering,” says William Kilpatrick, “when the suffering has meaning.” This is why literature succeeds where philosophy fails. “Reason is the organ of truth,” says C. S. Lewis, “but imagination is the organ of meaning.” Truth is not the problem when we are faced with evil. Evil is there and we know it. Its truth is clear enough. It is the meaning, the thing we really desire to know, that we most fail to see. The meaning of evil can only be seen through a plot, in a particular setting, in which characters each play their part. It helps us to see that, in our own story, we too are characters who have a role to play in a larger plot that gives meaning to our actions. “Act well your part,” says Alexander Pope, “there your honor lies.”

Alphabet Books (Part I & Part II) by Leigh Lowe
Numbers Books (Part I & Part II) by Leigh Lowe
Learning the alphabet is the critical first step in learning how to read. The Alphabet Book teaches letter recognition, letter formation, and pencil grip through repetition and tracing. Activities, created with the younger student in mind, make learning each letter simple and fun. This book also introduces initial and ending sounds, providing a gentle introduction to phonics. The Alphabet Book acts as a great supplement to any primary program or full-year preschool/kindergarten program.
The Numbers Book is the perfect introduction to numbers, counting, and patterns. Lots of tracing practice also makes this book ideal for the slightly older student who has already mastered counting, but still needs extra practice writing numbers. The activities (mazes, coloring, pattern recognition, connect the dots, and more!) are so much fun that your student won't be able to wait for the next lesson!

Help your child develop hand strength, finemotor skills, and independence with one or both books in this set. In My Very First Scissors Book, the child learns to open and close his scissors to cut along thick lines which fade, grow wavy, and create shapes as the pages progress. In My Very Own Scissors Book, the activities coordinate with alphabet lessons in Simply Classical Curriculum Level C (p. 47) or may serve as a useful precursor to the Jr. Kindergarten Book of Crafts. Both books feature perforated pages and large "cutting boxes" to promote the child's success.
The creative arts are an essential part of primary school education. These activities reinforce number and letter recognition, strengthen fine motor skills, and foster creativity and confidence. There is a craft project for each read-aloud in Memoria Press' Jr. Kindergarten and Kindergarten Classical Core Curriculum, and additional crafts that focus on art concepts. Enjoy each of your creations and the time spent together making them.
These supplemental guides are organized by week, matching our Classical Core Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade programs. Each guide includes an overview of each read-aloud book, author and illustrator biographies, oral reading questions, and a simple language lesson. These activities will help bring each readaloud book alive for your student. Also included are resources for the history, culture, and science lessons, biographies of the artists and composers, and poetry lessons.

Classical Phonics First Start Reading, Book E
First Start Reading:
Phonics, Reading, and Printing by Cheryl Lowe
by Michelle Tefertiller
Recommended for Kindergarten
In Book E we complete the program by covering long vowel teams, soft c and g, and three sounds of y. Once the student has mastered the basic phonics in the FSR series, he is ready to continue reading progress with real literature.
$59.90 set (Books A-E + Teacher Guides) Your children can begin reading instantly as they progress through 4 simple student books and 34 phonetic stories. The Teacher Guide includes helpful assessments, tips, and more! • • • • • •
consonants short & long vowels 57 common words manuscript printing artist-drawn coloring pictures drawing pages for every letter
*Note: Printing, an important pathway of the learning process, is an integral part of FSR. Some children, however, are reading-ready before their motor skills are developed enough for printing. If this is the case with your child, you may use FSR without the printing component.
FSR is a balanced, age-appropriate approach to phonics and reading, with a serious focus on correct pencil grip and letter formation. Also, while many phonics programs today use the ladder approach (consonant-vowel blending), we prefer the more traditional (vowel-consonant) approach combined with word families. Mastery of short vowels is the sine qua non of phonics programs, but few programs provide adequate practice. The FSR program consists of 5 student books with artist- drawn pictures to color, drawing pages for each letter or phonogram, and over 30 stories. The Teacher Guide leads you through the program and provides helpful assessments and teaching tips.
Grades K-2 $24.95
Phonics Flashcards
(5.5"x 4.25")
Phonograms are letters or letter teams that represent sounds. There are nearly 200 phonograms used to spell the 44 sounds used in the English language. In our Phonics Flashcards we have organized these phonograms into nine categories to give some rational order to the irregularities of English spelling. Phonogram cards can be combined and recombined to help students see the multiple ways a sound can be spelled, and the multiple sounds for a particular phonogram.

A Child's Guide to Word Mastery by Cheryl Lowe Classical Phonics consists of phoneticallyarranged word lists for students to practice their growing word recognition skills. In a word list there are no context clues, so the learner must rely on his mastery of letter sounds. If your child can pronounce each word in this list correctly, he knows his short vowel sounds, and you can move on to long vowels! Classical Phonics is the most effective tool we know of to address the repetition that young ones need when learning to read. It can be used as a supplement to any phonics program and covers nearly all English phonograms and sounds taught through second grade.
Perfect for any phonics program!
Phonics from A-Z
$25.99
Phonics from A to Z is a readable and accessible manual for parents and teachers who want to go deeper into the subject of phonics and reading. It begins with a succinct history of the controversies surrounding phonics, followed by a wealth of information on every aspect of how children best learn to read. It provides reliable, accurate, and common-sense advice as well as extensive lists of resources that will ensure that you can teach reading successfully. This is the best resource on teaching phonics and reading we have ever found. Highly recommended, especially for schools that may need multiple strategies to meet the needs of all students.
"I cannot praise First Start Reading enough. The ear training is key in learning to isolate letter sounds. The integrated writing practice connects the mental effort of reading with the finemotor skill of writing. Oh how I wish I had known of MP from the time my first child was in kindergarten! I am now using FSR with my current kindergartener, and am enjoying every minute of the experience." - Anastasia

My Thankfulness Journals (New American Cursive font) by Cheryl Swope
These journals let students practice their cursive writing while thinking about God's daily blessings in their lives. Each page begins "Dear Heavenly Father," and closes, "Your child," with space for the child's signature. In between is room for students to list their blessings each day. The Intermediate Journal is a smaller font size and has less tracing as students progress.
Cursive Practice Sheets (New American Cursive font)
One question we hear repeatedly is how to get more worksheets to practice New American Cursive writing. We try to put extra sheets in our books, but it never seems to be enough. Our new Cursive Practice Sheets book includes pages for practicing each cursive letter, Scripture copywork, and blank practice sheets. Since the most important objective of the NAC program is mastery, the more your student is able to practice, the better!

Simple, clear, & effective!
Some people think computers have made cursive writing skills obsolete, but good handwriting and computers are not mutually exclusive. Should we stop teaching language arts because a child can now text? Before the early 1920s, children were taught cursive in the first grade. Research shows that when third graders begin writing cursive, they return to a first grade speed level. By learning cursive earlier, students can focus more on other subjects once they reach the upper grades.

20 Ways to Calm a Wiggly Child by Cheryl Swope 1. Teach him to read well. 2. Stop his body from moving before giving a verbal direction. 3. Give clear, short directions he can follow. 4. Minimize auditory and visual distractions during work time. Provide headphones or earplugs and a supervised “office” area for independent work. 5. Teach in a small, contained area with clear physical boundaries. 6. Provide a visual schedule and overview the routine daily. 7. Include brief physical breaks in his day. Assist him with transitions. 8. Practice inhibitory activities, such as walking rather than running. Insist on do-overs when needed. 9. Teach calming habits of non-screen, independent leisure such as playing outside, completing crafts, and listening to music or audio books in a comfortable place. 10. Play simple turn-taking games for sharing, winning and losing gracefully, and self-control. 11. Provide strong leadership, so he does not feel out of control. Let him know he is in good hands at the start of each day. 12. Read books aloud about relationships, love, nature, courage, duty, and family. (Don Freeman books, Little Bear books, Boxcar Children series, MP read-aloud sets) 13. Use his high activity level for service. Teach him a few new chores. Encourage his helpfulness. 14. Enjoy him. Find the qualities you appreciate about him. List them. Remember them. 15. Speak with the encouraging language of a loving teacher-child relationship. 16. Be matter-of-fact. Sometimes it is better to disengage than to overengage. 17. Find activities you enjoy doing together. Do these together sometimes. 18. Encourage his friendships with polite, considerate children. 19. Add gymnastics, wrestling, swimming, sports, or daily walks to his year-round routine. 20. Teach old-fashioned manners. Provide opportunities for manners throughout the day. (Wait for food with hands in lap, ask rather than demand, and speak respectfully to adults.) Much of this is common sense, but in the throes of teaching or parenting, such reminders to ourselves can be helpful. We integrate specific tips, techniques, and read-alouds throughout our Simply Classical Curriculum. All of this can work together for the child’s own good and for the good of the family.

In Defense of Latin by R.W. Livingstone
S
ome critics have said that the value of Roman literature is that it has been the vehicle which conveyed Greek ideas to the world. The Romans took their art and, as far as their civilization rests on these, their civilization from Greece. Why, then, do we study Latin? Some of the reasons are given by Cicero in a passage where he sums up the excellences of Greece and Rome and declares the grounds on which his country has a claim to be considered great: Our mastery of character and of national life, of family, and of the home is far higher and nobler than theirs; our ancestors devised for the state an indubitably better system of laws and institutions. Or again, take the art of war and think what Rome has achieved in individual heroism and even more in collective discipline. In these achievements, which depend not on literary gifts but on character, neither Greece nor any other people can be compared to us. Where will you find a sense of dignity, a resolution of purpose, a loftiness of spirit, a feeling of truth and honor which can be matched with old Rome?
In fact, Cicero allows intellect to Greece but claims character for Rome. Shelley has expressed the same thought with a poet’s imagination: “The true poetry of Rome lived in its institutions; for whatever of the beautiful, true, and majestic they contained could have sprung only from the faculty which creates the order in which they consist.” If nothing moves in the world but what is Greek, it is almost true to say that nothing stands but what is Roman. Combine the two and you have the strength of Rome without its hardness, the glory of Greece without its instability, and (what is
48
In Defense of Latin
important for education) you have perfect models of two sides of human nature, which, in union, go to make the perfect man and state. Before Rome became mistress of the world, Europe had never found a way of combining liberty with order. Greece had propounded a theory of politics, but had been singularly unsuccessful in creating a stable, large-scale state—the imperial power of Athens lasted sixty years, that of Sparta and of Thebes even less. Such is the record of Greek political achievement. The empires of Alexander’s successors were equally unable to discover the secret of permanence. But while these empires and monarchies successively formed and broke up as rapidly as the eddies in a weir pool come into being and dissolve, a small town in Italy was leading a struggling existence in the middle of powerful tribes. Sometimes she was victorious, sometimes she bought off the enemy, once or twice she was almost destroyed. In the end, after continuous warfare, she gained a precarious supremacy in south and central Italy and turned her eyes across the seas. Two hundred years more of fighting were added to her wars in Italy, and she emerged practically the mistress of the world, with a strong organization and sounder statecraft than had yet been known. In these early struggles, a character was formed that never lost traces of its origin, which is betrayed in the favorite Latin adjectives: fortis, strenuus, constans, diligens, firmus, verecundus, castus, prudens, gravis, assiduus, and sedulus. Hard necessity taught the Roman
to prize these qualities. He became brave, stubborn, and honest because otherwise he would have been destroyed. He learnt the art of statesmanship and compromise because he had either to avoid civil war or perish. He avoided vice because there was no leisure to be vicious. He was not luxurious because he had no means of making money. All this became second nature to him. That is why Quintilian says, rather unjustly to Greece, “Graeci praeceptis valent, Romani exemplis” (The Greeks tell us, the Romans show us, how to live). The common characteristic is a deep sense of something which perhaps we can best express by the word “character.” Greece has indeed done more for morals than any force except Christianity, but she has done it by appealing to the reason, by making men think. Her gnomai (proverbs) are generally thoughts on life rather than direct moral precepts. But the Roman maxims are direct injunctions, as peremptory and practical as the Ten Commandments, the orders of a commander-in-chief on the battlefield of life. Greek takes us into the world of thought; in Latin, we live with a heroic race, “the commonwealth of kings, the men of Rome.” Like Aeneas in the lower world, we move among illulstres animae, splendid souls. Cincinnatus fetched from the plough to be chief magistrate of Rome; Valerius who, dying as consul, did not leave enough money to pay for his funeral; and Regulus, refusing to be exchanged for Carthaginian prisoners and himself opposing it in the Senate because “they are young and valuable generals, while I am an old and broken man” and going back to Carthage to torture and death. These iron characters at times are harsh and terrible, but they supplied the inflexible will, which carried the Romans through defeats and disasters to the empire of the world. Cato, the great Roman statesman, was a hard man—hard to foreigners, hard to his countrymen, and hard to himself. There were, however, two people in the world to whom he was not hard. “He said that he that beat his wife or child,” Plutarch recounts, “did commit as great a sacrilege as if he polluted or spoiled the holiest things of the world; and he thought it greater praise for a man to be a good husband than a good senator.” Roman literature contains, not by any means all the human virtues, but all the virtues which make great nations. “Do not think,” said Cato, rebuking the degeneracy of his own day, “that our ancestors made Rome great by their arms ... There were other things which made them great: industry at home, just government abroad, and a free mind in counsel, the slave of neither passion nor crime.” Deep reverence
for the family and for the woman as mother of the family, self-control, self-sacrifice, the sternest sense of duty, unrelenting determination, dauntless courage— Rome offers us examples of all of these in abundance. But what does the Latin language itself, its grammar as well as its great authors, have to do with this vigorous and virtuous Roman character? And why should we study grammar in Latin or Greek, rather than English or French? No doubt it can be done in the modern languages, but they have certain disadvantages. In English, at any rate, grammar study is artificial; we know the language already and have no real need to dissect it, while in Latin we must master the grammar in order to understand the language at all, and the study is therefore spontaneous. And if our object is to train exactness of thought, modern languages are far inferior to Latin, which has in a unique degree no modern language exhibits, a logical quality. The Latin here, if nowhere else, was an intellectual. He disciplined his thought as he disciplined himself; his words are drilled as rigidly as were his legions and march with the same regularity and precision. Modern languages, and English most of all, are lax and individualistic; in our grammar, as in our politics, we are nonconforming, dissenting, lenient to passive resisters and conscientious objectors—we have almost as many exceptions as rules. Our way is interesting and has its merits—more perhaps in life than in language. For in the ideal language, law is supreme; reason governs its grammar and the expression is exactly measured and fitted to the thought it expresses. Latin is such a language. No other language, least of all a modern language, has this rigid logical cast. Greek does not have it. From Greek we learn a different kind of accuracy; for example, it is less logical, but more sensitive. It is not an overstatement to say that not to know Greek is to be ignorant of the most flexible and subtle instrument of expression, and not to know Latin is to have missed an admirable training in precise and logical thought.

It is perfect for the serious Latin student who needs an English grammar program that coordinates with his study of Latin over the five years of Latina Christiana through the Forms series. Each two-page lesson covers two to three grammar questions along with practice exercises. English Grammar Recitation also covers common capitalization and punctuation rules by means of concise style sheets. It is hoped that this course can be completed in much less time than the typical English grammar course, leaving more time for composition and Latin.

Wh
at if you could teach your child using the same writing program that produced such masters of the language as John Milton, William Shakespeare, and Benjamin Franklin? What if you could have the same basic composition curriculum used by Quintilian, the greatest teacher of ancient rhetoric, and Cicero, the greatest persuasive speaker of all time? Ancient writers invented a way of teaching writing known as the progymnasmata, which provided a method of teaching composition that not only taught budding writers a disciplined way to approach communication, but also helped them appeal to the heads of their audience. The 14 exercises, organized from the simplest and most basic to the most complex and sophisticated, were the core education of a classical speaker, designed to produce what Quintilian once called, "the good man, speaking well." Jim Selby has blown the dust off of the writing curriculum that was used in schools for over 1,500 years and put it in an easy-toteach format that will revolutionize your curriculum. Presented clearly and systematically, Classical Composition will give you a clear road map to writing excellence.
Starting Classical Composition Late? No Problem! We recommend that students begin Classical Composition in 4th or 5th grade, so students beginning in 6th grade or higher may want to complete two courses a year in order to catch up. Now you can purchase any two sets at a reduced package price. This allows students to complete two stages at an accelerated pace in the course of a year until they are caught up, helping them to develop their writing skills quickly.

Why Read Shakespeare?
by David M. Wright
T “Each substance of a grief hath twenty shadows.” – Tragedy of Richard II
he contrast between shadow and substance singularly interested Shakespeare, as did the very nature of things themselves. He even makes use of profound concepts in logic, such as difference, property, and essence. In rhetoric, these are the topics of invention, for they concern the act of defining. So then, let us define why we should read Shakespeare. What is the essence of Shakespeare’s art? Why read the bard of Avon? The answer may lie in the contrast between literary shadows and literary substance. At Memoria Press, we suggest reading a Shakespeare text each year in grades 8-12; in short, as much as possible. In so doing, the student will receive a thorough and deep immersion in the substance of literature, language, and the great books. Here are ten reasons why this is so:
1
Shakespeare's literary genius is unparalleled in the long history of English literature. He holds the number one position as the greatest writer of English literature. T. S. Eliot, one of the finest poets (and critics) of the twentieth century, said, "Dante and Shakespeare divide the world between them, there is no third."
2
Reading Shakespeare provides a comprehensive education, as he was deeply educated in Latin, Greek, and the classics (though he infamously was not college-educated). To read Shakespeare's plays and poems is to travel the world in culture, history, and mythology.
54
Shadow & Substance: Why Read Shakespeare?
www.MemoriaPress.com
3
Shakespeare invented, expanded, and enriched our English language. Much of our language, both in syntax and vocabulary, is indebted to Shakespeare. He is credited with introducing approximately 3,000 words into the English language, and with incorporating a vocabulary in the range of 17,000 to 29,000 words.
4
Shakespeare's plays honor history and provide good examples of courage, heroism, and patriotism. They explore the great themes of love, war, and death. Similarly, they provide examples of the drastic and terrible effects of sin and vice.
5
His plays have assumed a central position in the European and English-speaking world, from theatres to academia. He is known and revered worldwide.
6
Shakespeare scholar Peter Saccio aptly remarks that "Shakespeare is a culture-hero, a mythical figure, a founder of society, a lawgiver, a prophet." Indeed, his literary influence alone created the potential for genre, plot, language, and characterization.
7
Shakespeare's plays are abundant in content. They have many scenes, plots, characters, actions, and deaths. The length of each play runs an astounding 2,000 - 4,000 lines! (Much longer than plays written today.) Fittingly, the huge size of the theatre stage in Shakespeare's day allowed for both epic and intimate details. It is nothing short of remarkable that Shakespeare was able to sustain such a profound level of eloquence and richness through so many lines and so many plays. His oeuvre includes 38 plays, 154 sonnets, and two long narrative poems.
9
Imagine watching a movie where everyone speaks in beautiful poetry. Now imagine speaking to your friends and family in elevated poetry. Then imagine reading your favorite classic novel in blank verse. Remarkably, Shakespeare combined the genres of drama, fiction, and poetry into one. For example, he combined live performance theatre with the great stories and characters of ancient Greek and Roman drama, with the great plot, story, and language of the modern novel, with the artful genre of poetry and verse. In a sense, then, reading Shakespeare is akin to watching a beautiful live performance of a Dickens' novel, where most of the characters speak in beautiful poetry. Suffice to say his incorporation of three genres into one makes his work ever more compelling and powerful.
10
To read Shakespeare is to be exposed to the fullness of humanity, to all that has been thought and said in the world, with realism and honesty—not the mere shadows of our existence, but the very substance of human life. As Hamlet said when initiating his play (within a play) to illumine his uncle’s guilt: … but let your own discretion be your tutor: suit the action to the word, the word to the action; with this special o'erstep not the modesty of nature: for any thing so overdone is from the purpose of playing, whose end, both at the first and now, was and is, to hold, as 'twere, the mirror up to nature; to show virtue her own feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure. (Act 3, sc. 2)
For Shakespeare was surely reflecting on the purpose and nature of his poetry, to which 400 years has borne testimony: to suit appropriate words to the manifold richness of human life. For his art holds a mirror up to human nature, showing the intricate features of virtue and scorn, and the very age and body of all time its form and pressure, its shadow and substance.
8
Reading Shakespeare results in a thorough exposure to classical rhetoric. By way of his heavy training in rhetoric, Shakespeare employed a multitude of literary and rhetorical devices in his plays. For example: synecdoche, when the part of something is used to refer to the whole: “Take thy face hence” (Macbeth, Act 5, sc. 3); chiasmus, the repetition of two or more parallel clauses/ideas, but presented in inverted order using different words (not to be mistaken with antimetabole, in which identical words are repeated and inverted): “Who dotes, yet doubts; suspects, yet strong loves” (Othello, Act 3, sc. 3).

Exploring America’s Musical Heritage:
Discovering Music:
In this course, Professor Carol—along with 38 other historians, scholars, and artists— takes you on a journey through America’s musical history. The arts give us a valuable way to connect with the past. When we sing the songs our great-grandparents learned around a campfire, read the poems they recited, and study the paintings or quilts they created, we visit the past in a tangible way. We connect with our legacy.
This program features a DVD of Professor Carol as she travels the world using music as the window into the history of thought and culture, along with a unit-by-unit Teacher's Manual to step you through it. Music has always been central to classical education, and by connecting music history to political and cultural history, we make all of history more memorable. Discovering Music brings Western culture alive for students.

one before; addition and subtraction come before multiplication and division, comma use is mastered before compound-complex sentences are addressed. Workbooks and textbooks are valuable for building skill areas. Content areas are literature, history, the sciences, mathematical thinking and understanding, written composition, art, music—fields of study that are open-ended and that can’t be “mastered.” Students will never learn all of history or science or read all of the great books. In these content areas, there is room for students to choose their own direction, to develop a deep and narrow expertise or a broader, wider knowledge, to tailor their study to their interests. When possible, we steer away from textbooks in the content areas, and toward collections of “living books”—books written by single authors, exploring particular issues and ideas. Fourth, to the classical mind, all knowledge is interrelated. Astronomy, for example, isn’t studied in isolation; it’s learned along with the history of scientific discovery, which leads into the church’s relationship to science and from there to the intricacies of medieval church history. The reading of the Odyssey allows the student to consider Greek history, the nature of heroism, the development of the epic, and humankind’s understanding of the divine. This is easier said than done. The world is full of knowledge, and finding the links between fields of study can be a mind-twisting task. A classical education meets this challenge by taking history as its organizing outline—beginning with the ancients and progressing forward to the moderns in history, literature, art, and music—and by connecting the history of scientific discoveries to the study of scientific principles whenever possible. Classical education is, above all, systematic—in direct contrast to the scattered, unorganized nature of so much secondary education. This rigorous, systematic study has two purposes. First, rigorous study develops virtue in the student: the ability to act in accordance to what one knows to be right. Virtuous men or women can force themselves to do what they know is right, even when it runs against their inclinations. Classical education continually asks a student to focus not on what is immediately pleasurable (another half hour of TV or computer game, for example) but on the steps needed to reach a future goal—mastery of vital academic skills. Second, systematic study allows the student to join what Mortimer J. Adler calls the “Great Conversation”:

A Language-Centered Education by Susan Wise Bauer
the ongoing conversation of great minds down through the ages. Much modern education is so eclectic that the student has little opportunity to make connections between past events and the flood of current information. “The beauty of the classical curriculum,” writes classical schoolmaster David Hicks, “is that it dwells on one problem, one author, or one epoch long enough to allow even the youngest student a chance to exercise his mind in a scholarly way: to make connections and to trace developments, lines of reasoning, patterns of action, recurring symbolisms, plots, and motifs.”

Dorothy Mills takes the student on an adventure, exploring the geography, culture, architecture, and most prominent people of Egypt, Persia, the Hittites, Israel, and more. Not only does she teach the valuable history and lessons of the ancient peoples, but she gives the students an understanding of the people and neighbors out of which Christianity sprung.
The journey continues, starting in Crete and ending in the Hellenistic Age ushered in by Alexander the Great. Students learn about the development of democracy, the primordial defense of democracy in the Persian wars, the heyday of Athens (also known as the Golden Age), and that sad self-destruction known as the Peloponnesian Wars. But it is not history alone—culture, values, and life lessons are taught.

If you don’t begin your classical education until middle or high school, we would suggest that you start with Year 5 and move forward from there. Before beginning your study of the classics, it is always helpful if your student has a basic knowledge of Greek mythology (D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths [p. 62]) and has read a retelling of the Trojan War (Olivia Coolidge’s The Trojan War [p. 64]).

The story of the Middle Ages is told through the colorful lives of Attila the Hun, Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Edward the Black Prince, and Joan of Arc, among others. This course guides students through the turbulent “dark age” of history and illustrates the transition from the end of ancient times to the birth of the modern era. This book is a perfect precursor to Famous Men of Modern Times.
Modern history—history, that is, after the fall of Constantinople in 1453—can sometimes seem like a confusing jumble of unrelated events. As a result, many curricula needlessly avoid this exciting period of history. Famous Men of Modern Times will bring the events of the last 500 years to life. These stories provide great insight into the foundations of the modern world.

The Oresteian Trilogy
The Three Theban Plays
Medea & Other Plays
Aeschylus was the first of the three great tragic playwrights. The Oresteia is the exciting trilogy about the end of the curse of the House of Atreus. Join Orestes as he seeks to revenge his father’s murder, but discovers, along with us, that revenge only begets revenge—that mercy and litigation are the better ends of justice.
Sophocles, “famous for wisdom,” won the playwright competition at the Festival of Dionysus many times. Here is the story of Oedipus, fated to unknowingly kill his father and marry his mother. This is the great myth, influencing all subsequent literature. Fate, free will, the quest for knowledge and truth—the glory and downfall of Western civilization.
Euripides further developed the tragedy, instituting the deus ex machina, a prologue with a background, and greater realism. His heroes are less resolute and more psychological, fraught with internal conflict. In his characters, we see the polar extremes to which human nature may go: cold reason and maniacal passion, nobility and cruelty, triumph and regret, grief and comfort.

The Divine Comedy
On Obligations
The Republic & The Laws
The Divine Comedy is one of the crown jewels of both Western and Christian literature. This epic, allegorical poem illustrates Dante’s spiritual journey of redemption that takes him through the pit of Hell (the Inferno) to the Beatific Vision of God (the Paradiso). The Student Guide contains helpful study questions, and reading notes for difficult lines.
Cicero was a man trying to give the politicians of his day solid principles to live by as they drove his fatherland, Rome, down the royal road of decay. His work On Obligations played a large role in Western Christendom but is daunting to read alone. Let us accompany your highschooler as he learns the principles of justice, wisdom, beneficence, courage, and propriety.
Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman statesman from the first century B.C., was convinced that the upright moral life was the happier life. The Republic became the blueprint of the U.S. government almost 2,000 years after it was written. In The Laws, Cicero defends his understanding of the upright moral life and becomes the foundation for the West's philosophical discussion on the natural law.

History of the Early Church
The City of God
Acts of the Apostles
Continue on from a historical study of the Hebrew people to an investigation of the history of the church. This was so evidently necessary to Christians of the 4th century, that one of their own, Eusebius, the bishop of Caesarea, wrote the first book to recount the struggles and victories of the first followers of Christ. In this year-long course, Chadwick's The Early Church is used as the main text, and students are directed to Eusebius' History of the Church when ancient testimony is appropriate.
The City of God, arguably Augustine's greatest book, is the source of some of Western society's greatest and most cherished beliefs. The book serves as the cultural fountainhead of all that followed, and it is unlikely that it will ever be equaled. The Teacher Guide contains helpful chapter summaries as well as a thorough introduction to teaching this course effectively.
The history of Christianity, particularly that of the early Church, is something every Christian should know. But when we talk about what books about the history of the Church we should read, we often forget the most important and informative book: The Book of the Acts of the Apostles. Here is the exciting story of the travels, the teachings, and—in many cases—the martrydoms of the apostles themselves, as told by the author of the Gospel of Luke. Christian history starts here.
