The Metaphysics of Amazement by Martin Cothran Reading for Wisdom by Dr. Dan Sheffler

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

The End of Life by Martin Cothran

Natalie Babbitt's Tuck Everlasting, which is set in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a twelve-year-old girl named Winnie Foster is dissatisfied at home in her little village of Treegap. She is tired of being cooped up and considers running away. One day, while wandering in the woods, she meets a boy named Jesse near a spring. Although Jesse looks to be about seventeen years old, he is in reality 104 years old. Jesse and his family, the Tucks, discovered by accident many years before that the waters from a spring in the wood grant eternal life. Winnie is quite taken with Jesse and his family, and when they leave she goes with them. A man who has been pursuing the Tucks, having found out about the water, finds them with Winnie and informs her parents of her whereabouts. For her safe return to Treegap he asks the Fosters for the land that includes the spring, intending to sell the water for profit. He offers them a partnership in his plans, which include Winnie, whom he intends to have drink the water as a public demonstration of its effectiveness. But the Tucks refuse, and Jesse's mother hits the man on the head and kills him. She is arrested by the constable and found guilty of murder and sentenced to be executed. Knowing she cannot die—and that this will become apparent when the constable tries to execute her—they break her out of jail. Winnie takes her place and the Tucks flee. But Jesse, who has fallen in love with Winnie, leaves a bottle of the magical water, and asks her to drink it at seventeen. He will come back, he tells her, and marry her, and they can be seventeen together for eternity. Winnie accepts the water, but she never drinks it, and she lives her life as she otherwise would have. Many years later the Tucks return to Treegap, a town that has been transformed by the modern world. It is now a suburban metropolis; the woods are gone and the spring is covered by a housing development. While Treegap has changed, they have remained the same, still the age each was when he or she first drank the water.

Before leaving, they visit the town cemetery and find Winnie's grave. She had died two years before. On her gravestone they read these words: In Loving Memory Winifred Foster Jackson Dear Wife Dear Mother 1870-1948

Both before and after I tell my students this story, I ask them: If you could take a pill that would keep you at the age you are forever, would you take it? Few, if any, of those who say yes the first time respond the same the second. The students who originally said they would drink the water almost always change their minds. Why? What does this story reveal to us that we didn't know before? As readers, we are unalterably saddened at Winnie's death, and yet we are forced to conclude that there was something present in her life that will forever be absent from the Tucks'. "That's what us Tucks are," says Pa Tuck. "Stuck so's we can't move on. We ain't part of the wheel no more. Dropped off, Winnie. Left behind." Winnie's life, on the other hand, precisely because it is limited, can be viewed as a complete whole. And by virtue of this, the story suggests, it has a meaning an incomplete story cannot have. She has lived a whole life, with a beginning, a middle, and an end. She has married and had children, and maybe even grandchildren. If her life could be told, we would see that it had a distinct setting, and that it was filled with characters—friends and family—and that the events considered together would resemble something like a plot. Her life, in fact, was not just a life, but a story. And, like any story, it had a theme— an overarching pattern that gave it meaning. A story is a meaninggiving thing. Which is why we should read them―no matter how old we are. M e m o r i a P r e s.

The Classical Core Curriculum is a complete classical Christian curriculum that emphasizes the traditional liberal arts of language and mathematics and the cultural heritage of the Christian West as expressed in the great works of history and literature. The curriculum has an early focus on the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic, and a special emphasis on Latin. Latin is the best way to gain an academic vocabulary and to learn the formal system of grammar, and is, along with math, the best early critical thinking skills training. The study of the cultures of Athens and Rome, as well as biblical and Church history, is designed to provide a basis for a proper understanding of European and American history.

CURRICULUM MANUAL The Curriculum Manual is your roadmap, your recipe, your flight checklist. Never make another lesson plan again—we've utilized our years of classroom and homeschool experience to do it for you. Every day, every subject, every exercise: Consider it planned.

CLASSICAL STUDIES Reading the classics civilizes the young, teaching those human values that children are not born with: unselfishness, compassion, courage, honesty, integrity, and justice. We have chosen to begin our study of the classics with Greek mythology because young students love the fantasy stories, and because Greek mythology sets the foundation for future literature studies.

LATIN Latin is the heart of a classical education. It develops the intellectual powers of the mind as no other subject can. In terms of usefulness and practicality there is no subject children can study that intersects with every other subject more than Latin. Latina Christiana is an introductory program that will launch students into a course of study that transforms their educational journey.

CHRISTIAN STUDIES Christian studies is an academic subject at Memoria Press, with the same challenging content and rigorous grading rubric as other subjects. Students spend the grammar school years studying the Bible chronologically with The Golden Children’s Bible, a condensed version of the King James Bible. Our focus in the grammar school years is biblical literacy and Scripture memorization.

SCIENCE Our in-depth science courses for the grammar school focus on observation and classification, the natural starting point of science. Learning about constellations, insects, birds, mammals, and trees will enable students to experience the order and beauty of creation. In third grade, we spend the entire year on mammals.

SPELLING Students get phonics practice through spelling in the grammar school years. Spelling Workout contains a phonics focus or rule that is tied to the list of spelling words for each week.

GRAMMAR Students memorize really well in the grammar stage, but they aren't developmentally ready for the analysis of grammar. So we make the best use of our time by teaching students the rules of English grammar with a little practice to put them in context. Students gain mastery through the study of Latin grammar, which teaches English grammar better than English does.

AMERICAN/MODERN Knowing where things are in the world is a tool we give our students in the years when they are able to memorize well. We begin with the United States in third grade, and by the end of the grammar school years students will be able to map the entire world, giving them geographical context for their studies in classical, world, and American history, as well as Christian studies.

MATH We continue our study of math with Rod & Staff throughout the grammar school years, focusing on mastery of basic arithmetic. Students will gain fluency in multiplication in third grade and begin working on division.

WRITING This introductory writing course sets the foundation for Classical Composition, the writing and rhetoric course that students will begin in fourth grade and study through high school. In third grade, students master key word outlining and narration.

1-877-862-1097

LITERATURE Literature is one of our best tools to accomplish the important goal of character formation. We have chosen timeless classics for the grammar school years, delving deeply, living with the books, and immersing students so that they will remember the experience. In third grade we read Farmer Boy, Charlotte's Web, A Bear Called Paddington, and Mr. Popper's Penguins.

PENMANSHIP Students continue to practice their fluent cursive writing throughout the grammar school years.

LATIN

A DEFENSE OF THE PASSIVE VOICE by Jon Christianson

"Language is a technology, invented to take information in your head and put it in other heads." is with this most unromantic premise that I set off with my students to discover the Latin tongue. Worry not that such meager ceremony should christen my charges' maiden voyage to those Lavinian shores. I do not thus qualify their first steps into Latinity to squash their sentiments of mystery and ancient prospect; I do so to liberate them. As rule-oriented as English education is (and Latin moreso), it serves a student well to remember that the point of language is communication—as regards Latin, communication with the past. The rules we learn that govern use of language, therefore, are those that make the best use of language, or rather, that best accomplish the aim of one's speech. Far better it is that students see these pillars of their study not as strange Herculean mandates, but as foundations for masterful expression. However, there exists in the English language a number of conventions whose utility for effective speech is difficult to qualify, chief among which is this: Never use the passive voice. To those unfamiliar with this proscription, I encourage you to ask around; it should not take long to find someone who strongly condemns the passive voice as an unforgivable grammatical error. Yet the Latin of antiquity makes frequent use of the passive voice, even in the hands of Rome's most illustrious wordsmen. So, for that matter, does the English tradition. The belief, however, that the passive voice is something inherently worthy of censure has passed so completely into the understanding of modern

English education that many treat it as an elemental rule rather than a stylistic admonition. I humbly propose to dispel this well-meaning misapprehension. Let it be shown that the passive voice is not just allowable but preferable in some cases; in other cases, the active voice is absolutely preferable. In yet other cases both are allowable depending on your preferred emphasis. Our chief concern, therefore, is not to justify how much the passive may be used, but that it can be used at all. Firstly, let us demonstrate that nothing is objectively wrong with the passive voice in English; secondly, let us identify in what cases the passive voice is objectively right. To our first question—"When others describe the passive as bad, is it objectively bad?"—I turn to Latin, a language that not only employs the passive voice with little stricture, but to which English frequently defers for grammatical guidance. We cannot write Latin passives off as an artifact of Italic primitivity; Romans were exacting grammarians whose energetic promotion of good Latin is the basis for the classical Latin we study today. The very "class" to which this "classical" style refers is the educated elite, whose language was cultivated for public oratory. Its excellence relied on its rhetorical appeal—sufficient clarity and command to sway the masses, with a refinement worthy of recording for posterity. To describe Latin as good, then, is to recognize how careful cultivation of style is borne by the spontaneity of public discourse; its performative quality lends paramount importance to sequence of ideas, rising and falling emphases, and suspension and resolution of themes. The natural features of the language suit it well for these purposes; a highly fluid word order, an emphatic metricality, and a complex variety of verbal agencies such as the passive voice all accomplish this goal of shaping one's speech to maximal sequential effect. M e m o r i a P r e s.

co

m

How does this apply to English? English is suited to its own excellencies by its own features, most notably its enormously rich and adaptable vocabulary. What English does not have is Latin's fluidity of word sequence and emphasis; in English, one cannot arrange words nearly so pliably without altering the sentence's substantive content. In this respect, English lacks an essential tool that lends Latin its performative oratorical quality. Remember, though, that Latin has other means to this end, some of which English has in common; prominent among these is our sought-after passive voice. The chief effect of the passive is to reorder ideas, to replicate the semantic meaning of its active equivalent while changing both word order and emphasis. To forego the passive voice is to artificially limit a capability in English that signifies excellence in Latin. Our second question—"When I defend the passive as good, is it objectively good?"—is proven easily enough. There exist numerous English constructions that can only be rendered in the active voice by surrendering what advocates of the active claim most characterize its excellence—desired strength and clarity of style. Grammatically speaking, a verb being active or passive changes its subject, but its agent—the actor, the performer, the doer—remains the same. However, the role or importance of the agent can vary so substantially that numerous demands upon it can render it useless or undesirable as a sentence's subject. If the agent is unknown, any active construction would merely mention that "someone" or "something" performed the action, and the introduction of an indefinite pronoun adds unneeded vagueness: Passive: The sword was forged in the 1300s. Active: SOMEONE forged the sword in the 1300s. (Who? Why did you bring him up?)

1-877-862-1097

If the agent is irrelevant, any active construction would include the agent even though the agent does not need mentioning to make one's point: Passive: Your house has been repainted. Active: LABORERS repainted your house.

If the agent is obvious, any active construction would include the agent in a redundant fashion: Passive: Shoplifters will be prosecuted. Active: PROSECUTORS will prosecute shoplifters. (Naturally.)

If the agent's inclusion would appear antagonistic or accusatory, any active construction would imply blame or condemnation in respect to the verb: Passive: Your bill was not paid on time. Active: YOU did not pay your bill on time. (This is how you can tell if it's a scam call or not; scammers use the active voice to intimidate you.)

If there are multiple agents acting on a single subject, any active construction would involve multiple conjoined clauses or very complex composition: Passive: I was dumped, fired, robbed, and kidnapped. Active: JENNIFER dumped me, my BOSS fired me, a BURGLAR robbed me, and my MOM kidnapped me. (Didn't see that coming, did you?)

Accepting the legitimacy of the passive voice in English need not concede equal utility to that of the active, much less a swing of the pendulum all the way to condemnation of the active. Each has its proper use, and I daresay that the original source of consternation against use of the passive was precisely its frequent overuse, which can produce an abstract, distant, or snobbish style. In any matter of style, however, the injunctions of our syntactic betters must be regarded as just that—matters of style, whose high fashions come and go but whose quotidian use obeys the demands of common sense. VideoText Math takes students on a complete journey through algebra using mastery-review techniques to fully explore the language of mathematics and algebraic relations. Students watch a ten-minute video that develops each lesson's concept while they follow along with their Course Notes, and then complete the exercises in the WorkText. Progress Tests help gauge student mastery throughout the year, with multiple forms of each quiz and test available if your student needs a little extra practice. The Instructor's Guide provides step-by-step instructions for solving the problems on each test, while the Solutions Manual does the same for the WorkText. A toll-free helpline is also available, giving you access to knowledgeable help if you need it.

Teacher $5.00 Our goal for math in the primary grades is the mastery of basic facts. One of the most effective ways to help students achieve mastery is simply to practice. With daily timed drills, Memoria Math Challenge is designed to give students that math practice and also to help the teacher measure students' immediate recall. We start with addition, subtraction, and number dictation in kindergarten, and ramp up to 200 daily problems by the end of first grade. If students are able to master their math facts in the primary years, they can devote more time to complex math operations in grammar school and upper school.

LOGIC

WHAT IS METAPHYSICS? by Thomas Cothran

etaphysics first finds its voice in childhood. For plants, it is enough to grow. For animals, food and play suffice. But children insist on asking "What is that?" and "Why?" Every answer prompts more questions. Inevitably, the parent's endurance gives out before he can satisfy the child's inquisitiveness. These bouts of curiosity are not merely a characteristic of childhood. Through them, human nature announces itself. These are the firstfruits of the movement out of a merely animal existence toward the light of reason. And it is in this desire to know that we find the key to understanding what metaphysics is. Between childhood and wisdom stands the long process of education, of inquiry, and of discovery. The purpose of education is to enable the desire to know that comes spontaneously to children, to focus it, to catalyze it with the great intellectual achievements of the past, and to prepare it to set out on its own.

M

1. METAPHYSICS AS A SCIENCE Metaphysics originates in the desire to know. But so do all intellectual disciplines. Among all the branches of human knowledge, where does metaphysics fit? Metaphysics is a science. In that respect it is more akin to physics or biology than to penmanship or literature. The term "science" is used in a broad sense to include, first, all knowledge that is sought for the sake of knowledge (rather than for a practical purpose), second, all knowledge that is expressed in an abstract theory, and third, all knowledge that is verified in experience. Science aims at understanding things not insofar as they are useful, pleasant, or practical, but as they Thomas Cothran lives in Louisville, Kentucky, with his wife and three children. He is a tutor at Memoria College, and he writes on philosophical and theological topics.

are in themselves. In a music class the aim is to be able to play an instrument well, not to understand the nature of music for its own sake. In a Latin class the aim is fluency, not a general theory of language. Music theory and linguistics, on the other hand, are sciences: Their objective is a complete explanation expressed in a theoretical framework. The outlines of a science are neatly summarized by the table of contents of a textbook. In chemistry we learn about the periodic table and its properties; in biology, we learn about living things. What the science teacher is trying to instill in his students is the theoretical framework that defines scientific knowledge.

2. WHAT IS METAPHYSICS ABOUT? Because metaphysics is a science, like chemistry or geometry it must have a central theory. But unlike other sciences, metaphysics does not seek to answer particular questions. Metaphysics tries to explain how the entire universe makes sense as a whole in light of scientific knowledge. And it asks whether this scientific universe can completely explain the universe, or whether some ultimate cause of the universe is required. It is true enough that our current sciences do not have final answers. We are still in the process of learning about our world. But metaphysics goes beyond current scientific discoveries. It asks what we can know now about what a final explanation of the universe must be like. Individual scientific discoveries change, but scientific understanding itself has an unchanging structure. Whatever the final scientific theories may be, they must involve experience, theoretical understanding, and judgment. You may have noticed this in yourself: You see something you do not understand, you form a possible explanation, and you try to figure out if you have it right. M e m o r i a P r e s.

co

m

So too for scientific explanations. They must involve experience, such as looking through a telescope or measuring with an instrument. They must involve theoretical understanding, as theory is the core of a scientific explanation. And finally, theories may be useful but not true. If we do not prove that a theory survives all possible criticism, we do not know whether the theory explains the real world, or is just a convenient fiction. Euclid, Aristotle, and Newton all had some theories that were useful, but turned out not to be true. This means that metaphysics can illuminate the general outline of the universe, even while scientists are still in the process of filling in the details. Metaphysics clarifies the relation of the particular sciences to each other and to the objective world. All things in the physical universe consist of:

Matter: Something that is known by observation. For example: location in space and time or a thing’s individuality.

Form: Something known directly by a theory. For example: gravity, metabolism, or the nervous system.

Existence: What we grasp in knowing that a theory is correct and correctly applied to the particular thing. For example: judging that some particular element is in fact a hydrogen atom reveals what truly exists.

3. MORE THAN A SCIENCE Can the empirical sciences one day explain everything? Or will that childhood question "Why?" remain? Metaphysics allows us to stand back and reflect on everything we have learned in the course of our education, and everything that is left to learn. What does this all mean, and how does it fit together? We learn about chemistry and physics—is the world 1-877-862-1097

ultimately reducible to its underlying physical parts? Are we humans just a part of the physical world? What does it mean that the reality of the world is not revealed directly to our senses, but to our intelligence and rationality? Is there a purpose to the universe? These questions are, of course, complex, but metaphysics can outline answers. Scientific explanations, even when complete, cannot answer why some laws govern the universe rather than other possible laws. Scientific understanding is limited by its dependence on observation, and the desire to know the truth goes beyond any limit. The question "Is there more?" will always recur to those who, like children, refuse to be satisfied with arbitrary and inadequate answers. The desire to know cannot be complete until it reaches an understanding that vanquishes all questions. Our acts of understanding are limited; our process of learning only goes so far. So long as something remains unknown, the desire calls us onward. Only an unlimited act of knowing would satisfy our desire to know. Again, science explains the world as it in fact exists. But why does it exist? Why not, rather, is there nothing at all? Science explains the universe as it in fact is, but it cannot explain the fact of its existence in the first place. The only thing that would satisfy the desire to know is an understanding which leaves nothing unknown. So long as some question remains unresolved, mankind will search for an answer. What are we seeking when we let the desire to know rule our thoughts and actions? Do we have a name for it? What do we call an act of understanding that is infinite, that has in itself the reason for everything, and for whom nothing remains unknown? What is it that we ultimately desire insofar as we are rational creatures? This, to paraphrase Thomas Aquinas, all men call God. W h a t I s M e t a p h ysi

$31.90 basic set (student, key) Student $29.95 | Key $1.95 | DVDs $45.00 Material Logic is a course in how to think. It covers the branch of logic called "informal logic" that deals with the content of argumentation. It can be used as a followup to Traditional Logic or simply as an introduction to the rudiments of classical philosophy for high school students. The program covers the ten ways something can exist, the fives ways of saying something about something else, definition, and division.

Traditional Logic I (Introduction to Formal Logic) & Traditional Logic II (Advanced Formal Logic) by Martin Cothran | Grades 7+

$75 complete set ea. (text, workbook, key, videos, quizzes) $38 basic set ea. (text, workbook, key, quizzes) Text $14.00 ea. | Workbook $15.95 ea. | Key $9.95 ea. Videos $55.00 ea. | Quizzes $5.00 ea. Traditional Logic I and II cover the branch of logic called "formal logic," which is concerned with the form and structure of reasoning. It focuses on the procedural aspect of reasoning, its mechanics, how we properly get from two premises or assumptions to a conclusion. The program is designed to teach students a practical mastery of the art of argument.

Find samples and full product descriptions at MemoriaPress.com!

Traditional Logic I presents the four kinds of logical statements, the four ways propositions can be opposed, the three ways which they can be equivalent, and the seven rules for the validity of syllogisms. In Traditional Logic II students will master the use of the nineteen valid categorical argument forms through the memorization of a medieval mnemonic device, and learn the three kinds of hypothetical arguments. Students will study examples of arguments from history and literature.

Used Traditional Logic with my high schooler to prepare him for college … he loved it and it has been wonderful for him to have under his belt BEFORE college. MP is the best out there.

The Texts explain challenging concepts in clear, concise language. The accompanying Student Workbooks include enough exercises to ensure that the student masters the material before moving on. The Teacher Keys include answers to the workbooks, quizzes, and tests. Instructional Videos are also available if you would like a little help from the author teaching the material.

READING for

WISDOM BY DR. DAN SHEFFLER

Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. —Proverbs 4:7

A

ncient cultures had a special wisdom literature, such as Proverbs or Ecclesiastes in the Bible, a literature which gives direct, sage counsel. To a great extent, however, all of ancient and medieval literature counts as wisdom literature. The authors understood themselves to be passing on wisdom to their readers, whether they wrote poetry or philosophical dialogues, and readers sought out literature as a principal means of becoming wise. Certainly, the joy of a story beautifully told or the delight in syllables ingeniously intertwined played a role as well, but these things were secondary to the aims of masters like Homer or Dante. Contemporary education has lost this pursuit of wisdom through reading, and when schools read someone like Homer at all, he frequently becomes mere history.

36

MemoriaPress.com

Wisdom involves two elements: one, gaining insight into the way of things (that is, into the objective structure of reality or what the Greeks would call the logos) and two, learning to shape our lives in conformity with this objective order. Our ancestors understood that we inhabit a universe with real patterns and laws that all work together to form a whole, an order which could be discovered by the observant but could never be invented. In our own culture, we have limited this discoverable order to the purely mechanical operations of physical science, but our ancestors understood that life and morality, beauty and spirit occupy the same universe as rocks, rivers, and sky, and that all alike are subject to a pattern. In his masterpiece, The Abolition of Man, C. S. Lewis describes the way that ancient cultures the world over all noticed this way of things and sought to inculcate it through their literature. Borrowing a term from Chinese philosophy, Lewis calls this way of things the Tao, usually translated simply as "the Way." We can see an example of this expressed in the fourth commandment: "Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee." Because it was created by God, the universe works in such a way that when children honor their parents it goes well with them. This pattern in the fabric of the world is so obvious that nearly all cultures have recognized it. Our own culture may scoff, but we can no more change this pattern than we can change the law of gravity. Many parents in the world of classical education are anxious that their children pull all the facts from the literature they read. We may call this "reading for knowledge" rather than "reading for wisdom," and we should recognize right away that reading for knowledge is not a bad thing. We dutifully have our children read Caesar, and part of the use of this is that they learn certain facts of history (how the Roman army, the Senate, and the government of the provinces functioned, for example). They read all this in Latin, and we are right to drill the knowledge of vocabulary, case, mood, and tense. Facts like these, along with names and dates, are the kind of thing one can put on flashcards—and you had better have those flashcards. Classical education spends a great deal of time and energy on reading for knowledge Dr. Dan Sheffler is a professor of philosophy with Memoria College and has taught philosophy, logic, Latin, and history at the University of Kentucky, Georgetown College, and Asbury College.

1-877-862-1097

like this because we hope that our children will accumulate a body of canonical knowledge. Without this body of knowledge they will not have the keys to unlock that great treasury of wisdom that is the Western canon. If we teach our children only how to read for knowledge, however, we will justly receive the complaint that the work is boring and there is no point. (They'll probably complain no matter what, but we can do something about the justice of it.) This means that as our students read we must walk with them through the text, helping them to see the world beyond it, identifying moments of insight into the laws of virtue, the patterns of good and bad relationships, the structures of temptation, or the ways that cities and peoples come to ruin. We can find this wisdom in any text of the Western canon, even when we read fiction or poetry—even (perhaps most of all) when we read fairy tales. We may contrast reading for wisdom with the more prevalent method that is taught in many schools. There, the objective of most discussions is to achieve something called "critical thinking" about what the students have just read. By telling students to think critically about a piece of writing, they are really being asked, for example, to identify any bits of evidence in the text of historical oppression along the axes of gender, race, or class. If the instruction has a slightly more philosophical bent, the directive to think critically will focus on the "deconstruction" of the students' worldview, what Lewis calls "seeing through" or "debunking." Students are taught to read the text to simply hunt for points where the text either reflects or challenges their worldview. If the point in the text reflects, the students are invited to critique the author; if it challenges, to admire. What these students are never taught to ask is whether anything they read is true. As we read for wisdom, there may well be something like the deconstruction which is so admired in progressive pedagogy, but the point is never deconstruction for deconstruction's sake. The point is the pursuit of wisdom. From Virgil, for instance, we may discover a profound insight into the real nature of things, into what it means to have a call placed upon one's life and to labor long without seeing the fruit of that call. This insight, because it is true, because it reflects something about the way of things, breaks into our petty self-contentment and exposes to us a bigger, deadlier—though more beautiful—world, a world which was there all along, although we needed a Virgil to teach us how to see this side of it.

Cheryl’s Corner Children need to read age-appropriate classic literature. There is a shared heritage that every child needs to be familiar with, allusions and references he will need to know when he encounters them. If you expose children to quality and beauty they are sort of inoculated against trash. They have higher standards; they are lifted up by noble and good characters.

It is of no p ossib le u se to me, and p resu mab ly was not read to me b ecau se it might b e. Bu t I learned it b efore I cou ld k now what it meant, and I will rememb er it u ntil the day I die. b e ex p lained. W hy is it that we never q u estion the valu e of these things? And why do we simp ly p ass them along from one generation to the nex t, u nthink ing? If we consider mu ch of the traditional literatu re of childhood, we see the same character everywhere— that of seeming senselessness. In fact, we have a name for the entire su b sp ecies of children' s literatu re in which this characteristic is the most pronounced: We call it nonsense literatu re. Many nu rsery rhymes are of this typ e. T hey seem to have b u b b led u p in the E nglish imagination from some fathomless cu ltu ral sou rce, b u t there are a few of them whose origins we can easily trace. T here is a docu mented history of their p rodu ction. W e k now that " T om T hu mb " was the first p rop er children' s story. W e k now that the origin of Mother Goose as the p atron saint of this literatu re was p rob ab ly the work of Oliver Goldsmith who, in the late eighteenth centu ry, wrote a b ook called Mother Goose's Melody. And we k now that it was J ohn N ewb ery, he whose name now graces the most p restigiou s award for children' s literatu re, who p u b lished it. T he au thorship of most nu rsery rhymes is u nk nown, ex cep t for the ob viou s fact that many of them were lik ely conceived b y those who cared for children: In other words, nursery rhymes are likely the creation of nu rses. Bu t these are mere facts, and they tell u s little of the natu re of these cu riou s creations. T h e M e t a p h ysi

Of those work s of nonsense whose au thors we k now, there are a few p rominent names. T he greatest and b est known practitioner of nonsense was Edward Lear: T here was an Old Man with a b eard, W ho said, " It is j u st as I feared! — T wo Owls and a Hen, fou r Lark s and a W ren, Have all b u ilt their nests in my b eard! "

Lear was the master of the hu morou s limerick , but wrote longer poems as well: "The Owl and the P u ssycat," " T he P ob b le W ho Has N o T oes," " T he P elican Choru s," " T he Q u angle W angle' s Hat," and, of cou rse, " T he J u mb lies. " Lear had a nu mb er of gifts that lent themselves p erfectly to the art of nonsense. H e cou ld name a

nonex istent thing so p erfectly as to seemingly call it into ex istence. W ho or what the J u mb lies actu ally are, for ex amp le, he never says. W e have only this inadequate description: F ar and few, far and few, Are the lands where the J u mb lies live; T heir heads are green, and their hands are b lu e, And they went to sea in a S ieve.

As far as morp hologies go, this is not mu ch to go b y. A nd yet, from it we can see the J u mb lies as clearly as anything that ex ists in this world. T hat su ch fantastic realities cou ld b e conj u red may say something ab ou t the u niq u e p owers of ou r langu age. Bu t whatever these p owers are, Lear was their master:

P u ssy said to the Owl, " Y ou elegant fowl! How charmingly sweet you sing! O let us be married! too long we have tarried: Bu t what shall we do for a ring? " T hey sailed away, for a year and a day, T o the land where the Bong-T ree grows And there in a wood a P iggy-wig stood W ith a ring at the end of his nose, His nose, His nose, W ith a ring at the end of his nose. " Dear P ig, are you willing to sell for one shilling Y ou r ring? " S aid the P iggy, " I will. " S o they took it away, and were married nex t day By the T u rk ey who lives on the hill. T hey dined on mince, and slices of q u ince, W hich they ate with a ru ncib le sp oon; And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand, T hey danced b y the light of the moon, T he moon, T he moon, T hey danced b y the light of the moon.

T here were no su ch things as Bong-T rees u ntil Lear sp ok e them into ex istence. A nd so far as we k now, no Owl and P u ssycat have ever b een su p p lied with a marriage ring b y a P ig ( or, moreover, b een married b y a T u rk ey that lives on a hill) . T he lines are colorfu l and vivid, b u t it is the effortlessness with which Lear casually mixes the commonp lace with the ou tlandish that gives them the air of reality. T he " T orrib le Z one," the " Chank ly Bore," and " the great Gromb oolian p lain" are a few of Lear' s other creations. N ob ody has ever located them, b u t they sound so legitimate that we are tempted to attribute ou r ignorance of them to the fact that they have yet to b e discovered. N either has anyone ever heard of a " ru ncib le sp oon," b u t, whether it ex ists or not, Lear convinces u s somehow that it is the p erfect u tensil for the eating of mince ( and slices of q u ince) . Lear is j oined in the p antheon of nonsense writers b y others, most notab ly Dr. S eu ss, who created his own imp rob ab le b u t comp elling world. W hat is it ab ou t this literatu re that has cau sed u s to tak e the time and b other each generation to hand it on to the nex t? T he world of mak e-b elieve has, as its cu lmination, the fairy tales of the Grimms, P errau lt, and Andersen, b u t " [ i] t is Mother Goose," says J ohn Goldthwaite in his b ook , The Natural History of Make- Believe, who first introduces us to who we are in the world . Our infant imaginations are j ollied awak e as she translates the toes on ou r feet into p igs going to mark et, sends a cow over the moon, and tu ck s the world' s b iggest family into b ed in a shoe.

The most significant quality of this literature is its freshness. I ts ex travagance mak es u s continu ally see the world as if it were new. S ays Goldthwaite, There is an accidental charm to stuff extracted from the world. P u t enou gh of it b etween the covers of even a small b ook and something felicitou s hap p ens. Ou t of ap p arent chaos the world reap p ears. T here is nothing to Mother Goose b u t random snatches of silliness, and yet it is all here: cast, history, scenery, weather, the p iecemeal world somehow argu ing itself whole again in song.

It was J . R . R . T olk ien ( himself no mean writer of children' s literatu re) who conferred u p on man the title of " su b creator. " As creatu res created in the image and lik eness of God, ou r natu res yearn to create. Bu t since we cannot ( as is God' s sole p rivilege) really b ring something from nothing, we are left with merely b ringing something from something. It is the q u intessence of tru e art that it looks as if it had b een conj u red ex nihilo. How does God create? According to the first sentences of Genesis, He does it b y giving form and content to chaos. T his is the character of nonsense and nursery rhymes: They take a seeming chaos of facts, and p u t them together in a new way that is hard to imagine anyone cou ld have thou ght of— throu gh the magic of p oetry. T hese nu rsery rhymes and nonsense lyrics collect the seemingly chaotic content from the mu ndane world arou nd u s— cats, cows, dishes, dogs— and, in imitation of the first chapters of Genesis, meld them together and give them a new shap e throu gh words— and not j u st any words, b u t the mu sical words of p oetry. W e do not have the ab ility to create ex nihilo, b u t throu gh the godly gift of langu age— p articu larly p oetic langu age— we can create a semblance of the first few moments of the world. We can mak e reality dance. W hat p oetry does is to help u s see the original creation again throu gh the su b ordinate magic of ou r own subcreation. Goldthwaite again: T he mind is stu b b orn in its need for order. U p set its ex p ectations with a sp iel of gib b erish and, lik e a tu rtle look ing to right itself, it will seek the stab ility of meaning every time. Nonsense might be defined more accurately as a flirtation with disorder, a tu rning u p side down of the world for the p leasu re of seeing it come right side u p again.

G. K . Chesterton argu es that nonsense verse and fairy tales clear away the ex istential deb ris of life that ob scu res ou r view of the actu al wonder of reality. By tak ing the ordinary things of this world and casting them into new j u x tap ositions that are

1-877-862-1097

no less strictly logical and orderly than things as they are, we see the real magic in the things that we have b ecome b lind to throu gh familiarity. W e recap tu re what he called the " ancient instinct of astonishment. " He said of fairy tales that they say that ap p les were golden only to refresh the forgotten moment when we fou nd that they were green. T hey mak e rivers ru n with wine only to mak e u s rememb er, for one wild moment, that they ru n with water.

T he world is b est viewed, he once said, b y standing on one' s head. It is the same world, only seen from a new and different perspective.

T he man in the moon Came down too soon, And ask ed his way to N orwich; T he man in the sou th He b u rnt his mou th, W ith eating cold p lu m p orridge.

N onsense verse is a p u re reenactment of creation that is— throu gh a trick of langu age— availab le to u s in this mortal ex istence. As hu man b eings created in God' s image, we have an innate desire for order p recisely b ecau se we have an innate desire for ex istence. T o see the original ordering act redramatiz ed b efore ou r eyes b y the magic of mu sical words p rovides u s with a glimp se of the p rimordial j oy that mu st have b een the angels' .

Dorothy Mills' Histories Grades 6+ | $39.95 set ea. (text, student, teacher) Text $16.95 ea. | *eBook $14.00 ea. | Student $17.95 ea. | Teacher $17.95 ea. (*not available for Renaissance & Reformation)

Combine with a Memoria Press Student Guide for a yearlong course. Each guide includes facts to know, vocabulary, comprehension questions, mapwork, and timelines, and the Teacher Guides provide thorough answers as well as unit tests.

Let Dorothy Mills take your student on an adventure to explore the geography, culture, architecture, and most prominent peoples of Egypt, Persia, Anatolia, Israel, and more. Mills covers not only the valuable history and culture of the ancient peoples, but she also gives students an understanding of the people and neighbors out of which Christianity sprung.

Like any good Roman course, this one begins with the she-wolf who nurses in infancy the legendary founders of Rome: Romulus and Remus. The rise and fall of a monarchy, the embrace of a republic with the simultaneous dislike for kings, and finally the rise of the Roman Empire teach unforgettable principles about human nature and society. Includes notes on the Roman culture, political system, and religion.

From the foundation of monasteries to the bell towers of universities, from the crowning of Charlemagne to the execution of Joan of Arc, Mills guides students through the spread of Christendom and the founding of a new civilization on the remnants of the Roman Empire.

It would be hard to overstate the reverberating effects of this period on modern history. Politics, philosophy, art, theology—virtually no aspect of Western culture was left unchanged by the Renaissance and Reformation. Mills succeeds marvelously in giving readers a neutral ground on which to base their understanding of this time.

The journey continues, starting in Crete and ending in the Hellenistic Age ushered in by Alexander the Great. Your student will learn about the wars and ideas, the art and architecture, the politics and philosophy that have shaped the course of Western civilization since the Greeks laid them out for us.

The Oresteian Trilogy

The Three Theban Plays

Medea & Other Plays

Aeschylus was the first of the three great tragic playwrights. Join Orestes as he seeks to avenge his father's murder, but discovers, along with us, that revenge only begets revenge—that mercy and litigation are the better ends of justice.

Here is Sophocles' story of Oedipus, fated to unknowingly kill his father and marry his mother. This is the great myth, influencing all subsequent literature. Fate, free will, the quest for knowledge and truth—the glory and downfall of Western civilization.

Euripides further developed the tragedy, instituting the deus ex machina, a prologue, and greater realism. His heroes are less resolute and more psychological, fraught with internal conflict. In them we see the extremes of human nature: cold reason and maniacal passion, nobility and cruelty, triumph and regret, grief and comfort.

$9.95 Alfred Church's retelling of Virgil's Aeneid is a great introduction to the story of Aeneas, who escaped from the burning city of Troy and founded Rome, the New Troy. Students will gain a good grasp of the characters and story of the Aeneid and be ready to tackle the more difficult writing of Virgil.

Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman statesman from the first century B.C., was convinced that the upright moral life was the happier life. The Republic became the blueprint of the U.S. government almost 2,000 years after it was written. In The Laws, Cicero defends his understanding of the upright moral life. His writings became the foundation for the West's philosophical discussion on the natural law.

Phonics & Reading First Start Reading: Phonics, Reading, & Printing Grade K | by Cheryl Lowe

$45.95 set (Books A-D + Teacher Guide) Student Books (A-D) $7.00 ea. | Teacher Guide for Books A-D $17.95 Your children can begin reading instantly as they progress through 5 simple student books and 34 phonetic stories. The Teacher Guide includes helpful assessments, tips, and more!

· 57 common words · artist-drawn coloring pictures

• consonants • short & long vowels

· manuscript printing · drawing pages for every letter

FSR is a balanced, age-appropriate approach to phonics and reading, with a serious focus on correct pencil grip and letter formation. Also, while many phonics programs today use the ladder approach (consonant-vowel blending), we prefer the more traditional (vowel-consonant) approach combined with word families. Mastery of short vowels is the sine qua non of phonics programs, but few programs provide adequate practice. The FSR kindergarten program consists of 4 student books with artist-drawn pictures to color, drawing pages for each letter or phonogram, and over 30 stories. The Teacher Guide leads you through the program and provides helpful assessments and teaching tips. *Note: Printing, an important pathway of the learning process, is an integral part of FSR. Some children, however, are reading-ready before their motor skills are developed enough for printing. If this is the case with your child, you may use FSR without the printing component.

LITER ATURE

The Story We’re In by Martin Cothran

W

alk er P ercy once sp ecu lated ab ou t a world in which the p rob lem of death had b een resolved, the eventu al resu lt of which was that everyone k illed himself ou t of misery. F or most p eop le the q u antity of life seems secondary to its q u ality. Mere su rvival may b e adeq u ate for b easts, b u t it is not so for rational animals. Life alone is not satisfying for hu man b eings; there is something more that is wanted, something b eyond life itself that mak es life worth living. One of the themes of great literatu re is that a life tru ly worth living is one that has meaning and purpose―a goal mu ch higher than growth, nu trition, and rep rodu ction. Literatu re itself is narrative in stru ctu re— it has a particular setting in which the story takes place, it has characters that act ou t the drama, it has a p lot with a conflict, a climax, and a resolution, which together p rodu ce the meaning of the story. Martin Cothran is the editor of T he Classical T eacher and author of T raditional Logic Book s I & II, Material Logic, and Classical R hetoric.

64

T h e S t o r y W e 'r e I n

T he things that mak e a story meaningfu l and satisfying are the very things that mak e life meaningfu l and satisfying. J u st as there is no good story that wou ld not mak e a good life, there is no good life that wou ld not mak e a good story. T he b est kind of life will have a great setting, great characters, and a great plot. It will have a compelling conflict and a convincing resolu tion. A great story is one worthy to b e lived, and a great life is one worthy to be written down and read. T he ancient Greek s thou ght that no one cou ld say he was hap p y u ntil the end of his life, p artly b ecau se what constitu ted a hap p y life was one that had meaning and p u rp ose, and that cou ld only b e determined at its end— p erhap s even after its end— b ecau se the meaning and p u rp ose of a life ( as with a story) cou ld only b e determined b y seeing it as a whole— with a b eginning, a middle, and an end. Any ex p erienced reader k nows that he cannot k now a b ook as a whole u ntil he has read to the last word. M e m o r i a P r e s.

co

m

Indeed, ou tside a narrative contex t, it is easy to see ou r lives as meaningless. T his is the situ ation in which the soldiers in All Q uiet on the W estern F ront find themselves. In what some have called the greatest novel to come out of World War I, the soldiers are fighting in the trenches, and the daily rou tine of random violent events—futile charges, mortar attacks that bring a chance of b eing b lown to p ieces at any moment, stray b u llets shot b y someone across N o Man' s Land— all mak e the reality arou nd them seem random and ab su rd. T hey cannot see the overall p ictu re as the generals in the war room can see it. F rom the generals' p ersp ective it all mak es sense— the war has an op ening, a middle game, and an endgame. T heir every act is dictated b y the overall p u rp ose of the war. Bu t the soldiers in E rich Maria R emarq u e' s great work are not ab le to see this. T hey see only the individu al events that mak e u p the war. T hey are necessarily b lind to the overall p u rp ose. T hey j u st follow orders. In fact, one of the reasons the F irst W orld W ar was such a significant event was that so many young men witnessed what seemed to them a meaningless slau ghter. T he ennu i that followed the W ar and the nihilism that grew among the intellectu al class were the resu lt. T he rise of the ex istentialist movement after the W ar took the seeming ab su rdity of what had hap p ened and made a whole p hilosop hy ou t of it. W riters lik e J ean-P au l S artre and Alb ert Camu s wrote nu merou s work s articu lating the ab su rdity of ex istence and the meaninglessness of life. Becau se of this there ensu ed a sense of lost innocence and a sk ep ticism ab ou t b asic cu ltu ral institu tions. T he W ar help ed b ring ab ou t the end of the old order— the aristocratic system that had dominated E u rop e for centu ries and the older religiou s order that was already teetering as a resu lt of the defection of the intellectu al classes in E u rop e to atheism and agnosticism in the late nineteenth centu ry. The crisis of confidence that followed in the basic moral, social, and p olitical assu mp tions b rou ght all of this into disrep u te. Bu t there was confu sion in what shou ld rep lace it. T he meaning and p u rp ose of hu man cu ltu re that had su p p orted hu man societies was eliminated and there was u ncertainty ab ou t what life was for, and therefore ab ou t what the ex act natu re of societies and p olitical institu tions shou ld b e. Ou r world had lost its story. W e all live today in the wak e of this crisis. But there was one soldier who charted a different path. He had fought in the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest battles of the War. When sent into reserve, he was diagnosed with " trench fever," a malady transmitted by body lice which caused weakness, 1-877-862-1097

headaches, and fever. He was hosp italiz ed and sent b ack to E ngland, where over a nu mb er of years the ex p erience of the W ar help ed him constru ct one of the great ep ic works in English: The Lord of the Rings. In one scene of T olk ien' s masterfu l work , S am and Frodo have entered Mordor. Sam turns to Frodo and says: I wonder if we shall ever b e p u t into songs or tales. W e' re in one, of course; but I mean: put into words, you know, told by the fireside, or read out of a great big book with red and black letters, years and years afterwards. And people will say: "Let's hear about Frodo and the Ring!"

W hy does S am ask the q u estion at this p articu lar moment—a moment in which the two hobbits find themselves in a place where there seems little hope that the q u est they set ou t on will su cceed? S am u nderstands imp licitly that in order to mak e sense of their situ ation, they need to k now why they are there, why they are doing what they are doing. If they see their trials as p art of a larger story, one that someone someday will tell by a fireside, then it will all somehow mak e sense, even thou gh they can' t see it in the moment. It will have meaning and p u rp ose, and, as miserab le as they are, that meaning will give them the p ower to go on. At this p oint in their j ou rney, they are hungry, not just for the little food they have, but for something to feed their sou ls. In his ex cellent b ook W hy Johnny Can't Tell Right from W rong, William Kilpatrick says this: T he same imp u lse that mak es u s want ou r b ook s to have a p lot mak es u s want ou r lives to have a p lot. W e need to feel that we are getting somewhere, making progress. There is something in us that is not satisfied with a merely p sychological ex p lanation of ou r lives. It doesn' t do j u stice to ou r conviction that we are on some k ind of j ou rney or q u est, that there must be some deeper meaning to our lives .

W hat confers meaning on ou r actions is a narrative contex t. W e need to see ou rselves in some k ind of story in order to mak e sense of ou r lives. It is this vision of a meaningfu l life in a meaningfu l world that mu st u ndergird ou r view of ou rselves and of the society we live in. Bu t it is hard to see ou r own lives as a meaningfu l story and the lives we live among others in commu nity as having any k ind of p u rp ose or theme when many of u s don' t read stories anymore. If we want to see the significance of our own lives we need to gain the k ind of p racticed insight that comes from a wide reading of great stories. W e may find that some of these stories, like Remarque's, p osit that there is no meaning. B u t we shou ld focu s mostly on those stories, lik e The Lord of the Rings, that clearly affirm the centrality of narrative—that there is meaning, there is p u rp ose, if we wou ld only seek it. B y immersing ou rselves in stories, we can see the story we ou rselves are in. T h e S t o r y W e 'r e I n

Civility AND

Civilization BY LEIGH LOWE

As

classical edu cators, we recogniz e that we seek for ou r stu dents ( and ou rselves) not simp ly k nowledge, b u t wisdom. Ou r goal is to master not simply our content, but our character. Refinement in b oth thou ght and deed is the u ltimate reward of edu cation. Of cou rse, we can never fu lly k now what the head or heart of another holds, but we are afforded clues to the nature of individuals by the way they behave. Consequently, we are either attracted or repelled. I met my husband when we were eighteen years old, week one of college. Our first conversation (as complete strangers) inclu ded a j ok e ab ou t marrying in the fu tu re. W hen I accep ted this arrangement at eighteen as a freshman it was b ecau se he too thou ght station wagons were cool. When I agreed again at twenty-five, it was because I loved him and believed him to b e a good man. W hy did I think that? Among other things, I fou nd him smart and b rave and faithfu l. B u t I also think of these stories when I consider what formed my opinion: Once, on a date, we were taking a walk and he casually stepped to the street side of the sidewalk . O nce, when we were riding in a j eep with a friend who was speeding and showing off, he quietly whispered instructions that might protect me should we flip or wreck. Once, when I was sick, he brought me a little bag full of cou gh drop s and ice cream and tissu es. O nce, when we were tak ing a cou ntry drive, he p u lled to the side of the road as a fu neral p rocession p assed in a show of resp ect for the deceased. Individually these are pretty small acts of kindness, but in a series with many other similar acts, I p egged my hu sb and as a man with manners. T hou gh at the time I didn' t consciou sly associate manners with morality in j u dging my fu tu re sp ou se, au thor P au la Marantz Cohen p oints ou t that literatu re illu minates the connection, crystalliz ing this idea for u s in an ex cellent W all Street Journal article, " J ane Au sten K nows T hat Manners Mak e the Man. " Cohen mak es the p oint clearly, concisely, and correctly that literatu re, Au sten in p articu lar, can show u s that " p oliteness is tied to deeper morality." Cohen says: "In Austen, bad or amoral people are generally vulgar and ru de. S ome of these characters can p retend to b e mannerly when it serves their interest. T he p oint is that they cease to b e so when their gu ard is down or when they are no longer invested in getting what they want." As we know, literature helps us understand tru ths and reality that we might not see otherwise, simp ly b y giving u s the distance to see with more ob j ectivity. Look ing b ack , I can recogniz e that those cou gh drop s were more than a display of rote courtesy; they reflected the heart of a man. Alerted to this tru th, we see that Au sten isn' t the only au thor who demonstrates the manners/morality relationship . Ou r literatu re has long recogniz ed the imp ortance of manners and civility. X enia, or hosp itality, is a central theme in Homer' s Odyssey. In the Odyssey, we see the contrast of ob edience and disob edience in regard to xenia mu ltip le times. W e see that a b reak down in manners is a b reak down in virtu e. T he su itors wreak ing havoc on Odysseu s' home are not j u st socially deb ased, they are morally corrupt. Breaking the laws of etiquette equated to breaking the laws of humanity: disregarding p ru dence, temp erance, j u stice, and fortitu de— the cardinal virtu es. In the ex amp le of the su itors, Homer also shows u s the seven deadly sins— p ride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony, sloth—and ultimately the consequences of letting sin ru le ou r lives. T he su itors' b ehavior in ravaging Odysseu s' home is set u p as the antithesis of xenia from the beginning. Their actions are defilements of virtuous character. They show utter disregard for mannerly conduct—and also for people, property, and right action. U ltimately, the su itors show u s life withou t love for ou r fellow man. W e can see this theme not only in a great canonical p iece of literatu re lik e that of Homer, b u t also in endu ring stories for children. In K enneth Grahame' s The W ind

GOOD MANNERS ARE BEST UNDERSTOOD AS GIFTS OF THOUGHTFULNESS GIVEN FREELY TO OTHERS.

in the W illows, we see a drastic change tak e p lace in T oad' s social demeanor— his manners— after a life-changing adventu re. A totally " converted" T oad celeb rates his triu mp hant retu rn to T oad Hall in a dramatically different way than expected. Civility, p reviou sly misu nderstood b y T oad as an association with fi ne possessions and lavish events, is fi nally, tru ly, achieved when he sheds his p ride. He su b mits, denies the sp otlight, and instead redirects attention by "pressing delicacies on his guests, by top ical small-talk , and b y earnest inq u iries after memb ers of their families not yet old enou gh to appear at social functions." Toad fi nally (mostly) understands that selflessness and humility are req u ired of tru ly civiliz ed individu als. Literatu re shows u s time and again that to those who valu e civiliz ation, civility is a necessary ideal. " Civility" has its etymological roots in the Latin word, civis (citizen). But civility, I think, is better understood as rooted not in a word, b u t in the W ord, sp ecifically the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do u nto you . " Cohen tells u s that " Au sten p resents [ manners] as the need to treat others hu manely rather than instru mentally. " As Christians, we can recogniz e that acting with civility essentially means acting with love and charity. If motivated b y hu mility and sincerity, manners should stem from a conscientious effort to act in accordance with ou r faith; they shou ld encou rage u s to " Love thy neighb or as thyself. " In Anne of Green Gables, this is ex actly how Marilla explains etiquette to Anne when Anne questions the ap p rop riateness of certain actions ahead of a highly anticip ated tea p arty. " T he trou b le with you , Anne, is that you ' re think ing too mu ch ab ou t you rself. Y ou shou ld j u st think of Mrs. Allan and what wou ld b e nicest and most agreeab le to her. " As many do, Anne was think ing of manners as ru les and p ersonal restrictions; M arilla recogniz ed that good manners are b est u nderstood as gifts of thou ghtfu lness given freely to others. K eep you r elbows off the table—so you don't crowd your neighb or. Don' t chew with you r mou th op en— b ecau se it' s u nap p ealing and diminishes the dining ex p erience of others. with gratitu de the generosity and thou ghtfu lness of a giver. H aving manners is not ab ou t op erating within a set of narrow constraints or ex alting oneself in a show of su p eriority. H aving manners is ab ou t hu mb ling oneself to mak e others more comfortab le— even in the smallest ways ( lik e walk ing street-side on a sidewalk ) . T he p oint is, if having manners mak es u s p rou d, the p u rp ose has b een defeated. T his emp hasis on hu mility is imp ortant b ecau se it illu strates the fact that b eing mannerly doesn' t mean b eing fancy. J u st as we are all cap ab le of b eing good, we are also cap ab le of b eing p olite. W hite tab lecloths are not req u ired. As C. S . Lewis tells u s, " E ven in social life, you will never mak e a good imp ression on other p eop le u ntil you stop think ing ab ou t what sort of imp ression you are mak ing. " Imp ortantly, Lewis ex tols self-forgetfu lness, not self-dep recation. Hu mility is not a denial of the b lessings God gives us; we should use our good gifts, not flaunt them. T he same is tru e of good manners— they shou ld b e b estowed, not b randished. Beyond the intrinsic goodness of treating others with k indness, manners and civility can serve u s in p ractical ways. F or ex amp le, on the way to middle school b ask etb all tryou ts I ex p lained to my ( short) son that thou gh he may not b e the most gifted athlete, he cou ld distingu ish himself b y b eing hardwork ing, p olite, and coachab le. It may not b e enou gh, b u t the q u ality of his manners, in addition to ( or instead of) the q u ality of his free throws, cou ld help get him on the team. I explained that it does us little good to have ex traordinary cap ab ilities— or a head fu ll of sou nd ideas— if we are disagreeab le, imp olite p eop le with whom others wou ld rather not interact. In general, we p refer b eing arou nd p eop le with genu ine manners b ecau se we k now that we are b eing considered and valu ed in their p resence. At their core, however, good manners are not ab ou t getting ahead— they' re ab ou t getting along. T hey are ab ou t b eing servant-hearted in ou r relationship s. Ou r commitment to manners shou ld b e u nwavering b ecau se they demonstrate ou r desire to b e good. Literatu re rep eatedly reminds u s that Manners do, in fact, Mak e the Man. Biblical literacy is just as important as cultural, moral, and functional literacy, and the material we use to teach children their faith should be just as rigorous and demanding as any other important subject. Our Christian Studies series is a systematic study of the major events and characters in Salvation History, using The Golden Children's Bible. Students work through a Bible timeline from Creation to Christ, memorize Bible geography, the books of the Bible, people and events in order, and discuss vocabulary and basic theological concepts common to all Christian faith traditions. At the end of this course your student will be thoroughly grounded in the knowledge necessary for advanced Christian studies. Each lesson in the Student Guide includes facts to know, a memory verse, comprehension questions, and geography and timeline activities. The Teacher Guide contains thorough answers and additional insights and background information for each lesson, as well as unit tests.

Student $15.95 | Teacher $17.95 The Acts of the Apostles tells the exciting story of the travels, the teachings, and—in many cases—the martyrdoms of the apostles as they take the message of Jesus Christ from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth in the years immediately following Christ's life, death, and resurrection. This unit study will acquaint students with Christianity's infant stage.

"There will not be left a stone upon a stone." Our children may know of Christ's prophecy, but do they learn about its fulfillment? Josephus, a Jew turned Roman citizen, is regarded as the most trustworthy source on the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. This follow-up to a study of Scripture is an introduction to the history of Christianity.

City of God, arguably Augustine's greatest book, is the source of some of Western society's greatest and most cherished beliefs. Augustine's book serves as the cultural fountainhead of all that followed, and it is unlikely that it will ever be equaled. The Teacher Guide contains helpful chapter summaries and an answer key for the Student Guide.

The History of the Church $19.00 Eusebius, the bishop of Caesarea, wrote the first book to recount the struggles and victories of the first followers of Christ. In this yearlong course, Chadwick's The Early Church is used as the main text, and students are directed to Eusebius' The History of the Church when ancient testimony is appropriate.
