hen we teach a child who has learning difficulties, medical conditions, or other daily struggles, we may find ourselves praying for that which is beyond our grasp. We need a strength deeper than our own, a joy richer than our own, a hope truer than our own, a love greater than our own. This is why we hold Christian studies in such high regard. Scripture memory, prayer, Bible stories, sacred art, sacred music, hymns, and spiritual songs—all of these point us to the holiness, mercy, and love of God in Christ. All of these inform our thoughts and our daily lives. Learning the faith is not an elective. Christ Himself is our hope. So, too, Christ Himself is our children's hope. The glimpse of virtue and of glory, and the promise of righteousness beyond ourselves give us a hope beyond ourselves. "But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord" (I Corinthians 1:30-31). No matter what else we attempt, let us be single-minded in our devotion to Christ and to teaching the faith. Let us be diligent in hearing, reading, and receiving the divine gift of the Word. Let us gather with other believers. Let us cultivate devotion in our schools and homes, as God grants us the immense and humbling privilege of doing so. We know that we cannot do this alone. We need each other. We need our Good Shepherd. This is why we include Christian studies in all of our Simply Classical packages from our earliest levels through the most advanced. In Readiness Level A, little ones listen as we assure them, "Jesus hears me when I pray / In the night and in the day." By Level 12 students have learned comforting, poetic verses by heart: "'Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest'" (Joshua 1:9). We do not know what will come of our efforts, but surely we can pray for our children every bit as much as we scold, correct, or chastise them. Let us never give up on our children, on God's work in them, or on God's work in us. Let us keep loving our children, as we are called to do. May the Lord keep all of us in His care for His good purposes. May He continue to give us and our children all we need for this life and for the life to come.

A Book Review by Michelle Swope
The Apple and the Arrow is a delight to the Christian eyes. The book tells the story of a boy, Walter, who is young—too young yet to follow in his father's footsteps. But when danger calls, it is another matter altogether! During dangerous times Walter and his father walk side by side, man to man, coequal in manhood and duty. It is Walter who saves his father by ultimate grace and sacrifice when he risks his own life to give him freedom. This test of mercy, courage, and daring—akin to Isaac and Abraham being tested—finds Walter bound hand and foot, an apple placed atop his head. His father is ordered to shoot the apple in two to save their lives. If not, both die. Walter's father, William, is nervous, but Walter comforts his father with these words: "Shoot, Father, shoot! I am not afraid." Thus William Tell's legend was born.

Dr. Carol Reynolds (Professor Carol) combines her insights on music history, arts, and culture with her passion for arts education to create curricula, inspire concert audiences, and lead lively international tours. Songs from Carol's Hurrah and Hallelujah! are now taught in Simply Classical Levels 4-12.

as this your first sacred song? If so, you had a perfect start for the journey into sacred music. Sacred music evokes or expresses the Christian faith, either through specific words describing God's qualities and scriptural events, or by the creation of a musical atmosphere designed to foster reverence. While children experience sacred music first through simple songs and hymns, they are able at young ages to enjoy chunks from larger compositions that are regarded as masterworks in the Western classical heritage. In short, the gap between "Jesus Loves Me" and the "Hallelujah Chorus" may not be as large as it seems. Children of all abilities perceive and absorb the technical elements of music effortlessly. True, they may have limited vocabulary to describe these elements, but they instinctively respond to music's mechanical ingredients, categorizing what they hear according to basic qualities such as whether the music is slow or fast, loud or soft, whether it is filled with the same sounds or a variety of instrumental colors, or if it is characterized by a catchy set of words. Sacred concepts, therefore, when expressed through music, shape and intensify any child's faith. When a melody with sacred words enters a child's heart through the eye or ear, a version of that melody is likely to exit the child's body via his own arms, legs, or singing voice. Technical elements like tempo and rhythmic patterns cause expressive physical reactions in a child, even if the child cannot hear or speak but can rather feel and sense. Musical color (the sound of differing instruments and voices) affects the cognitive development in a hearing child in the same way that a seeing child comprehends visual colors. In addition, musical form (the reassuring patterns of contrast and repetition), which is common to all Western music, helps a child organize his perception of time as well as regulate the flow of his emotions. It's not surprising, therefore, that sacred ideas and images, when expressed through musical elements, will be implanted forever in a child's mind and heart. That is why adults recall so fondly their own singing of "Jesus Loves Me." But the power of this recollection is not based solely on nostalgia. It is also based on repeated exposure and careful consideration of the musical and spiritual elements of a real song at a young age or with immature ability. So let's take a minute to analyze some of those elements. The tune of "Jesus Loves Me" is simple, limited to five different pitches. (In the key of C, these would be C, D, E, G, A.) These five pitches form a scale pattern called the pentatonic scale. The highly singable pentatonic scale appears SimplyClassical.com
in folk music across the globe and helps explain why the melody of "Jesus Loves Me" feels so natural and timeless. Secondly, the words of "Jesus Loves Me" are set into rhythmic patterns common to Western music. The verse part ("Jesus loves me, this I know") sounds as "short, short, short, short / short, short-long" (sing the melody with those words). The refrain ("Yes, Jesus loves me") flips that pattern, changing it to "long-short, short / short-long." The last line of the refrain ("The Bible tells me so") basically restores the initial pattern of "short, short, short, short, short-long," bringing satisfaction to the singer and to the listener. Children do not need awareness of this pattern to feel its effect. Similarly, the child naturally grasps the third element that makes "Jesus Loves Me" such a classic: its musical form. Form in Western music is created by the juxtaposition of passages that repeat and passages that present new material. "Jesus Loves Me" is cast in one of the most basic classical forms called "verse-refrain." If you regularly sing hymns, you are familiar with this form where the different verses of poetry use a single melody, while a set of lines breaks up those verses with a predictable, repeating touchpoint that unifies the piece (refrain). Indeed, one of the main reasons "Jesus Loves Me" sticks so well in children's minds has to do with the reassurance felt each time the refrain "Yes, Jesus loves me" recurs. Lest this example seem too simple, recall that we enjoy verse-refrain form every time we sing more complex songs like the hymn "Blessed Assurance" (refrain: "This is my story, this is my song / Praising my Savior all the day long.") Repetition and contrast form a key element in Western music across the centuries. In fact, the world's best-known chorus, "Hallelujah" from Handel's Messiah, relies in part on resounding repetitions of the word "hallelujah." Try to imagine this chorus without that repetition! The key to learning what's inside a piece of music is simple: Have repeated hearings. With repeated hearings, music embeds itself in a child's memory. Select one or more of the sacred pieces listed to the right in accord with your faith tradition. Introduce the text first, pointing out that the composer was responding to a text in every measure. Or, let the child discover the text across repeated hearings and tell you what the song is about. Describing music—something we hear that "disappears"— can be challenging at more sophisticated levels, but simple, comfortable terminology works quite well for children. In fact, descriptions should be simple, since the goal for a child is to feel the language of music. Music translates sacred words into an experience deeper than spoken language alone. We want our children to experience many sacred compositions, but try not to favor quantity over repetition of a focused selection of works. A child who embraces a few well-crafted pieces, whether simple or complex, is building receptivity to a rich heritage of sacred music and a foundation for absorbing and enjoying this music in the years that lie ahead. 502-966-9115
SONG SUGGESTIONS: THE LORD'S PRAYER Outside of chant renditions used in liturgical services, Albert Hay Malotte's version is the most iconic musical setting of this text.
AVE MARIA A happy marriage between a tender melody written by Charles Gounod imposed above J. S. Bach's first Prelude in C in Book I of The Well-Tempered Clavier.
IF WITH ALL YOUR HEARTS YOU TRULY SEEK ME Aria No. 4 from the first part of Felix Mendelssohn's spectacular oratorio Elijah. It is preceded by an impressive recitative "Ye People Rend Your Hearts" (No. 3) that kids may also enjoy learning and singing (in their own versions) around the house.
HOW LOVELY IS THY DWELLING PLACE Gorgeous chorus from Johannes Brahms' A German Requiem (Ein deutsches Requiem), Op. 45.
SLEEPERS WAKE, A VOICE IS CALLING! Wonderful chorale by J. S. Bach (Wachet auf, Ruft uns die Stimme!). You can enjoy the hymn itself (found in many hymnals), discover the beautiful (and likely familiar) organ prelude (BWV 645) transcribed from the cantata, or listen to part or all of the cantata (BWV 140), which starts with a vigorous overture for orchestra and chorus, and through which the chorale tune is woven.
ALLELUJA From the motet Exsultate, jubilate by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (K. 165). This is an exuberant virtuosic aria that always impresses! Look for a performance by the boy soprano Aksel Rykkvin, whose stunning performances have drawn many people to sacred vocal music.
SING GOD A SIMPLE SONG A catchy, strong, poignant song from the first part of Leonard Bernstein's curious and somewhat outdated 1971 theatrical mass called simply, Mass.
BE THOU MY VISION An old Irish hymn to the tune of "Slane," translated by Mary E. Byrne. Many hymns can capture a child's imagination, so choose ones your child likes.
HIS EYE IS ON THE SPARROW Timeless gospel hymn written in 1905 by Civilla D. Martin (words) and Charles H. Gabriel (music). This has been recorded by many artists so you can have fun exploring different versions.

"I just wanted to say what a blessing this curriculum has been. I have seen such tremendous progress with my eight-year-old son. I suspect he has ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. Reading for him had been such a struggle. Now I am so much more hopeful and have such a sense of relief. His reading, printing, and spelling have improved. Blessed Hermann by Cheryl Swope
On
July 18, 1013, a baby boy was born to the Duke of Altshausen in Germany. At some point in the boy's childhood a crippling condition rendered him unable to fulfill his expected role as the eldest son. Historians believe that the boy suffered from a degenerative motor neuron disease, such as spinal muscular atrophy. The condition resulted in restricted use of his limbs. He could not move about easily and had difficulties speaking clearly. Young Hermann required someone to carry him about. Due to both his physical maladies and the historical context of his life, he acquired the name Hermannus Contractus, meaning "Hermann the Twisted" or "Hermann the Cripple." At the age of seven he was sent to school, likely the monastery at Reichenau. Hermann probably struggled initially to read and write because of his infirmities. We can imagine attempting to write with painful,
10
palsied hands, or speak sounds with a mouth that could not utter them clearly. Nonetheless, Hermann evidenced a strong mind and received a formal education. Unable to participate in hearty physical pursuits as could other young men his age, Hermann is said to have stated: litteris traditus sum ("I am consigned to letters"). Over time, a life of letters served him well. Hermann wrote in German, became proficient in Latin, and had some knowledge of Greek. Within the monastic setting he devoted himself to mathematics, music, history, and the sciences, including theology. Hermann became best known for his Chronica, a large work of great historical detail, especially regarding the late tenth and early eleventh centuries. He wrote on astronomy, is credited with mastering the astrolabe (an astronomical tool), prepared a computus for determining the date of Easter each year, and wrote on theological topics with great spiritual depth. His treatise On the Eight Principal Vices in poetic form became widely known in the medieval Church. Hermann penned the hymn "Salve Regina," which is still sung in the Catholic Church today. Despite his physical afflictions—made more daunting considering the age in which he lived— "Hermann the Cripple" received a classical Christian education. His life of letters was made whole by the mercy of God and encourages us today from a place in time over one thousand years ago. In his poem "Hermann the Cripple," William Barton Hurlbut gives us these stanzas, as if from the voice of Hermann himself: I am least among the low, I am weak and I am slow; I can neither walk nor stand, Nor hold a spoon in my own hand. Like a body bound in chain, I am on a rack of pain, But He is God who made me so, that His mercy I should know. Brothers do not weep for me! Christ, the Lord, has set me free. All my sorrows He will bless; Pain is not unhappiness. From my window I look down To the streets of yonder town, Where the people come and go, Reap the harvest that they sow. Cheryl Swope is the author of Simply Classical: A Beautiful Education for Any Child and Memoria Press' Simply Classical Curriculum, as well as editor of the Simply Classical Journal. Like a field of wheat and tares, Some are lost in worldly cares; There are hearts as black as coal, There are cripples of the soul. Brothers do not weep for me! In His mercy I am free. I can neither sow nor spin, Yet, I am fed and clothed in Him.
We can only imagine how Hermann's humble life, writings, and presence impacted others in his time. Research on the man is limited (and sometimes conflicting), but some attribute to Hermann the hymn "Alma Redemptoris Mater" ("Loving Mother of Our Savior"). Maybe you don't know this hymn, but you may know The Canterbury Tales. In "The Prioress' Tale," a student learns to sing the hymn in school: This little child, while he was studying His little primer, which he undertook, Sitting at school, heard other children sing "O Alma Redemptoris" from their book. Close as he dared he drew himself to look, And listened carefully to work and part Until he knew the opening verse by heart.
The boy in the tale sings the sacred words with fearless reverence in the streets. Irritated, angry onlookers capture the boy, harm his throat, and cast him in a pit. Undeterred by persecution, the boy miraculously sings on in praise. The tale continues: Great God, that to perform Thy praise has called The innocent of mouth, how great Thy might! This gem of chastity, this emerald, This jewel of martyrdom and ruby bright, Lying with carven throat and out of sight, Began to sing "O Alma" from the ground Till all the place was ringing with the sound.
Historians presume that Hermann's condition was degenerative. As he experienced progressive immobility and suffering upon suffering, in his life we see an echo of Job from the Old Testament: "Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him" (Job 13:15). We would do well to contemplate the ongoing faithfulness of one so afflicted. On September 24, 1054, at the age of forty-one, Hermann—historian, astronomer, poet—died from the effects of his many afflictions. Once known only as a little boy with a paralytic condition, today Blessed Hermann is remembered as a man who shared freely of himself, persevered daily through trials, and found mercy in his Savior. September 25 is the feast day for Blessed Hermann in many traditions, and he is considered a patron saint for both the unborn and the disabled. His education and his life can remind us to tend unflinchingly to both the intellect and faith of every child we encounter. Blessed Hermann

TRUTH FOR ALL NATIONS BY REVEREND ROBERT W. PAUL
T
he Christian Church and classical education are a match made in heaven. In the Gospels, Jesus makes it clear that the kingdom of heaven also belongs to children and even infants (Matthew 19:13-15; Mark 10:13-16; Luke 18:15-17). St. Paul tells Christian fathers not to provoke their children to anger but instead to raise their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). In the Old Testament, God ensured that children would know who He was and what He did for them by exhorting Israel to teach and instruct the future generations (Deuteronomy 4 and 6). Christian children should be raised in the Lord's discipline and instruction. Classical education has had a home within Christianity for centuries. Ever since the days of St. Augustine and the decline of the Roman West, the civilizations of the Greeks and the Romans were preserved through the diligent work of churchmen. Thomas Cahill's classic, How the Irish Saved Civilization, details how the monks and monasteries of Ireland ensured that the classical Christian culture and learning of the West did not die. Throughout the subsequent medieval period, classical education and Christianity were wedded together. When Charlemagne sought better education through the help of Alcuin and other churchmen, it was classical education that revitalized the Carolingian Empire. When the universities of Paris, Oxford, and Cambridge flourished in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, it was classical education that served as a springboard for what would be known as Scholasticism. And, when the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth centuries saw the "rebirth" of classical learning, it was classical education that found its home with Christian humanists in Italy and Northern Europe, and ultimately in the churches and schools of the Reformation. Prior to the Enlightenment and the following ages of revolution, and even afterwards in England, classical education was Christianity's education. Reverend Paul serves as headmaster and associate pastor at Memorial Lutheran Church and School, Houston, TX.

Truth for All Nations
SimplyClassical.com
This brief history shows that Christianity and the classical education of the West were united for over a millennium. Particularly we see that when periods of revitalization and flourishing occurred it was when the rulers of the West rekindled the embers of civilization and saw how connected this learning was to the teachings of the Church. Now that may sound well and good for the monks, priests, and schoolmen of the Middle Ages, and the learned humanists of the Renaissance, but what does this education have to do with all children and all people? It is common for classical Christian education to seem "elitist" or upper crust. Many brick-and-mortar classical schools seem to mirror "prep school" life with uniforms and houses. They often tout a rigorous education in books that other students cover in high school and college, and some schools even teach these books in Latin. How can such a school be for all children, including those with special needs? Begin at the beginning. Proceed as far as the child can attain. Instruct in the faith every step of the way. God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—desires all of mankind to be saved. All of mankind should know who He is (the Triune God manifest in Christ Jesus) and what He has done (salvation for all who believe in Jesus' death and resurrection). These truths are to be taught to all Christians, regardless of age and ability. They are our conversations when we walk and when we lie down, when we are at home or at work (Deuteronomy 6). Whether it is instruction in the simplest words about God's love or reading the Church's great confessions, learning phonics or learning Latin, studying early arithmetic or tackling geometry, listening to children's stories or reading great literature, learning to think about ideas or to master logic, reciting a children's poem or delivering a compelling oration, a classical education rooted in the Christian faith is an education for all children of all nations. All children need the Lord Jesus. Christian education, firmly rooted in the classical tradition, delivers heaven to each and every one. As time passes, it seems that more and more children are diagnosed with academic, social, behavioral, and mental needs. These vary in degree and kind. However, regardless of the needs of the children, all children need to know Jesus Christ and what He has done for them. All children need the instruction that has carried the Christian truth from century to century, from civilization to civilization, and from shore to shore. This education is adaptive and flexible, even though it is challenging and rigorous. This education is God-pleasing and time-tested. This education, like the truth of the gospel, breaks all barriers. It knows no boundaries. Classical education and the Christian Church are a match made in heaven. The Christian faith and classical civilization are taught together so that each generation of children may flourish as God intends: centered on Christ and the neighbor who needs Christ. Classical education and culture serve the gospel by inclining children of every ability and age toward that which is needed, not only by the individual student, but also by their neighbors now and in the future. 502-966-9115
