PRESERVING OUR CULTURAL TOPSOIL by Martin Cothran

ost people think topsoil is just dirt. But it is far more than that. When people lived closer to the land, they knew this, but now farming is mechanized and we have an industrialized food system. To most people, this all seems just fine. Food is easy to get—and cheap. What else matters? What few people hear about is the degradation of the soil that produces our food. According to many reports, we are losing topsoil at an alarming rate. According to one expert we are losing "30 soccer fields of soil every minute." In an article in Time magazine, John Crawford at the University of Sydney says we are "stripping the topsoil of nutrients at 10 to 40 times the rate that it can be naturally replenished." Over-farming. Over-grazing. Deforestation. The use of artificial chemicals. "Simply put," says Crawford, "we take too much from the soil and don’t put enough back." Harry Caudill, a writer who worked for years as a country attorney in the hills of Eastern Kentucky, described how topsoil is formed: The first layer is made up of clearly recognizable leaves from the most recent autumn. The next layer is less recognizable, the one after that formless, and finally there is a rich mass of unremembered mold from remote times. But the plant atop this composition grows out of it all, is nourished by it all, and contributes to it all. The composite layer is the plant's heritage.

According to Scientific American, it takes a thousand years to produce an inch and a quarter of topsoil. Through proper care of their land, farmers can help in this process by continually giving back to it. But it still takes a long time. 2

"A culture," says Caudill, "is accumulated in the same manner, an accretion deposited by each generation." Six or eight generations back, the deposits become formless, but the influences persist. We cannot escape the consequences of what those old dead generations did and left to us. Daily we confront in others, and ourselves act out, influences whose social beginnings were old in Europe when Caesar's legions sailed for Britain.

Culture is lost and degraded in the same way as topsoil—through the failure to preserve and replenish it. Instead of inculcating in each new generation a knowledge and appreciation of the ideals and values that constitute the underlying layers of our Christian civilization—a civilization with deep roots in Greek philosophy and poetry, Roman social and civil order, and the Hebrew nation's record of its dealings with the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—we increasingly use up the benefits of our past without putting anything back from which future generations can thrive. We used to have a way of preserving our cultural topsoil. It was called "education." We grew each new generation out of the richness of our past so they could add back to the cultural soil. But our industrialized education system no longer considers passing on our heritage to students to be a priority. The primary purpose of classical education is to pass on the accumulated wisdom of Western civilization. And it does this through the proper cultivation, not of the soil, but of the soul—a practice that not only uses the heritage we have been given, but adds another layer to it. MemoriaPress.com

What do I need to watch Streaming Instructional Videos? The only thing you must have is a device (computer, phone, tablet, etc.) with internet access!

arents often ask classical educators, "What good is Latin going to do for my child? Is spending all those years on a dead language really going to educate my child?" We trip over ourselves in pointing out the many benefits of learning Latin. It trains students to think logically, to better understand grammatical concepts, and it teaches many roots of English words. But we sometimes forget to point out one of the greatest benefits of learning Latin: You get to read Latin! Classical authors, poets, and church fathers wrote in Latin. Not only that, they were masters of Latin and spent much time thinking of the best way to convey their thoughts in Latin, not English. As every Latin student knows, reading Latin is not easy or a quick process. Since we are mortals we must be always mindful of time, and reading a translation of Cicero’s First Catillinarian takes much less time than translating it. Anyone who has translated this magnificent speech will be able to attest that the translation does not do it justice and will be able to show you why. Translations inevitably fall short of their originals, either due to grammatical differences between the languages, double meanings that do not exist in English, ambiguities that do not exist in Latin, or irreproducible artistry in the original. Here are just a few examples. The Subjunctive Mood One of the hardest aspects of Latin grammar to explain is the subjunctive mood. By changing the ending of a Latin verb you can change something definite ("I am eating") to something indefinite ("I may eat" or "I should eat" or "I could eat," depending on context). The subjunctive is a vibrant part of the Latin language; wishes, opinions, possibilities, desires—these are all found in the subjunctive. Marcus Tullius Cicero was the greatest Roman orator. People went to the Forum just to hear him argue court cases. His argument on behalf of Archias is one of his most famous. Archias, a Greek poet, stood accused of not being a Roman citizen. The trouble was that the building that allegedly held the record of his honorary citizenship had burned down. Cicero claimed Archias was a Roman citizen, but that even if he weren’t, Rome should want him because he was a poet. Cicero cites Gaius Marius, a Roman general who had a poet follow him around and record his deeds. He says, … itaque ille Marius item eximie L. Plotium dilexit cuius ingenio putabat ea quae gesserat posse celebrari. … So too the famous Marius especially adored Lucius Plotius, by whose genius Marius thought the things that he had done would be celebrated.

When a Latin author talks about what another person thinks, feels, or perceives (such as "Marius thought"), and he uses subordinate clauses (quae gesserat), he can indicate whether the sentiment contained in the clause is his own or the person's he is talking about. In English,

these clauses are ambiguous. Consider the English, "Amber thought John, who was an idiot, had left the party." Does Amber think John is an idiot or does the author? There is no way to tell in English. In Latin, you indicate that it is the speaker's assertion with the indicative mood (the normal mood), and that it is the assertion of the person about whom you are speaking with the subjunctive. When Cicero uses the indicative (gesserat) instead of the expected subjunctive form (gessisset), he tells us that the deeds of Marius are not something that Marius merely imagines, but rather actual deeds that the poet records for posterity. Cicero is saying, "Poets don’t make things up—they record the great deeds of our great men so we should accept them as citizens." The point in context is small, but it shows the way that Latin authors choose their words for maximum effect. The student who knows his Latin grammar will spot it straightaway.

Sometimes, however, even good translators will make bad choices that obscure the original meaning rather than clarify. Both of these translators render Augustine’s ad te as "for Yourself." "For" is an acceptable translation of ad, but "for" is not clear enough here. What Augustine is saying is that God created man for His use; man was made to complete the works that God had designed him for, namely praising Him. The English "for" fails to effectively capture this meaning. Vergil Even the best translators cannot properly convey the artistry of the original author. Latin is a notoriously succinct language, and Latin poets are extremely economical; they can squeeze shades of meanings out of a few nuanced and powerful words. A translation can never reproduce all the creative skill of the original. A picture of the Sistine chapel will awe you, but it cannot give you a sense of the space that the painting takes up, the colors as they really are, or the thickness of the strokes. You would have to be there physically to "feel" it, and to get all the beauty out of Latin poetry, you must read it in Latin. Take just four words of Vergil’s Latin from the Aeneid and compare it to the amount of space required to bring out the meaning in English. In Book 2, the hero Aeneas is trying to escape Troy, which is being sacked by the Greeks. As he rushes around he encounters his fellow Trojan Panthus, and asks him for a status report. Within his short speech, Panthus tells Aeneas:

Sometimes, however, even good translators will make bad choices that obscure the original meaning rather Tu excitas ut laudare te delectet quia fecisti nos ad te et inquietum est cor nostrum than clarify.

St. Augustine’s Confessions Translations can also fail to carry double meanings, or are translated in ways that make ambiguous what was clear in the Latin. Consider two different translations of a famous sentence from the opening of St. Augustine’s Confessions paired with the original Latin. Augustine says:

donec requiescat in te.

Outler translates this as: You have prompted him [man], that he should delight to praise you, for you have made us for Yourself and restless is our heart until it comes to rest in you. [adapted Outler translation, removed archaisms]

Pusey translates: You awake us to delight in your praise, for You made us for Yourself, and our heart is restless until it repose in You. [adapted Pusey translation, removed archaisms]

Notice excitas is translated differently by Outler and Pusey as "prompt" and "awake" respectively, and that they translate requiescat as "comes to rest" and "repose." Outler focuses on the core meaning of excito, to cause an action in something else, and similarly its opposite, requiescat, to cease motion. But Pusey also picks up on the secondary meanings that Augustine is using. Excito also means to wake up and requiescat also means to lie down for rest after a long day. Pusey and Outler have not misconstrued the Latin. With a translation, you can only choose one meaning of a word to render into English. With the Latin, you can appreciate both meanings simultaneously.

Fuimus Troes. Fuit Ilium. (2.325)

A word-for-word literal translation would read: "We were Trojans. Ilium [Troy] was." But this is not what Vergil means. Fuit and fuimus are both perfect forms of the Latin "to be" verb, sum esse fui futurus. In the perfect tense, fui means "to have been and to not be." What Panthus means is ,"We were Trojans, but are not now. Ilium was, but is not." David West translates it as "The Trojans are no more. Ilium has come to an end …" This accurately conveys the meaning, but it lacks the force of the original. West has accurately captured the meaning, but neutered the potency of the Latin. To get that, you must read the Latin. In classical educator heaven, there is a large comfy couch, a bottomless cup of strong black coffee that never gets cold, and a personal Library of Alexandria. Unfortunately, here on earth, we sometimes must settle for translations, but whenever possible, we should try to go back to the Latin. Until you do you won't know what you are missing!

ach of us in our daily lives hears a lot of arguments, and all of them are different. But, in one respect, there are only two basic ways to argue. We might call these two kinds of argument "arguing forward" and "arguing backward." The First Way: Modus Ponens Arguing forward involves beginning with a principle or a universal truth and inferring a conclusion that is its consequence. This kind of argumentation is characteristic of mathematics and philosophy. Every square is a four-sided figure A chess board is a square Therefore, a chess board is a four-sided figure

The universal truth here is the fact that every square is a four-sided figure, and the conclusion is the specific statement that a chess board is a foursided figure. But this kind of argument can be used in politics and other areas as well. Abraham Lincoln is a good example of someone who argued forward. On the

issue of slavery, Lincoln began with the assumption that no human being should be enslaved. That was his broad, general principle. He then employed the specific assertion that African Americans were human beings, from which it followed that no AfricanAmerican person should be enslaved. No Human being should be enslaved Every African-American person is a human being Therefore, no African-American person should be enslaved

Or, If no human being should be enslaved, then African Americans should not be enslaved No human being should be enslaved Therefore, African Americans should not be enslaved

This argument affirms that "no human being should be enslaved," and concludes that AfricanAmericans should not be enslaved. This kind of argumentation is what is used in geometrical proofs. The movement forward in the argument can also take the form of what is called Modus Ponens in hypothetical reasoning (like the second slavery example above): If P, then Q P Therefore, Q

It starts by affirming the antecedent (P) and ends affirming the consequent (Q). It affirms forward. The Second Way: Modus Tollens Arguing backward also involves deduction, but employs it in a different way. In the process of arguing backward, we make an inference, and then, rather than arguing forward to a positive conclusion, we argue backward to a negative conclusion: Every animal that is kosher chews the cud and is cloven-hoofed A pig does not chew the cud nor is it cloven-hoofed Therefore, a pig is not kosher

Or, If the material is copper, then it will conduct electricity This material does not conduct electricity Therefore, this material cannot be copper

This way of arguing starts by affirming the consequent (Q) and ends denying the antecedent (P). This kind of argumentation is particularly suited to a consequentialist argument; that is, an argument against some idea or policy on the basis of the bad consequences that are likely to ensue. For example, at the time of this article's publication, the debate on health care is raging. The argument made against the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare") by many conservatives is that if we don't repeal and replace it, premiums will continue to skyrocket and insurers will continue to leave the market. And since we want neither of these things, we should be opposed to Obamacare. But supporters also argue backward when they argue that, if we repeal the ACA, then more people will be uninsured. And since we don't want people uninsured, we should not repeal the ACA. Both of these example arguments take the same form, which is called Modus Tollens: If P, then Q Not Q Therefore, not P

Modus Ponens argues positively forward, while Modus Tollens argues negatively backward. Both are legitimate and effective ways to argue. Martin Cothran is the author of Traditional Logic I and II (p. 30) as well as Material Logic and Classical Rhetoric (p. 31).

e live in an era highly focused on the visual. Our lives are shaped by digital images blasted from cell phones, tablets, and massive billboards that obliterate the night sky with their intense light. Yet, despite this visual stimulus, we travel farther each day from meaningful encounters with the important human expression called “art.” What role ought art play in our lives? How do we start the process of engaging our children in the study of art? Let’s begin with three points about children and art. First, remember that children are marvelously impressionable regarding exposure to art. To the degree their visual life includes real objects of art, they almost always develop some fondness for it. Second, in my usage the term “art” casts a wide net. It includes painting, sculpture, graphics, mosaics, mobiles, as well as virtually any kind of decorative art and handcraft (grandma’s embroidered tablecloth, an inlaid cloisonné belt buckle, stained-glass windows, or handmade pottery). Any object that someone has spent effort making beautiful or meaningful qualifies, in my book, as art. Now I’ll tread gently with my third point. As a musicologist and historian, I love it when children are brought up to recognize “the masterworks,” be it music, art, theater, or dance. We dedicate ourselves at Professor Carol to providing the curricular tools necessary to help bring such masterpieces to life. But a more time-critical goal involves helping children understand what constitutes art: its materials, processes, functions, and message. This goal may sound lofty, but it fits well into daily life and does not require extra training or the application of outside curriculum.

The Materials of Art Children love to know how something is made— its ingredients, its mechanics, its internal secrets! Spending minutes identifying the source of light in a painting trains a child’s eye to see the physical world. Permitting a child to paint a narrative mural (telling a story) along a backyard fence connects that child with MemoriaPress.com

the world of nineteenth-century Romantic painting. Allowing a child to explore the media of art—chalk, watercolor, oils, materials for sculpting—yields sophisticated results in his future ability to analyze art. A child’s eye and heart can be equally affected by an opportunity to watch a professional artist work with the raw materials of art. You may have to ask around, but finding an opportunity, for example, to witness an artist cast a bronze sculpture can be a lifechanging experience (for you as well as the child).

The Presentation of Art Another fruitful path involves the realm of presenting art (exhibiting). Here’s an exercise that can appeal to children. Look in a thrift store or in a relative’s attic for an unframed painting or graphic. Go to a framing shop or craft store and, if possible, find an employee willing to share the basic principles involved in framing art. Then have the child select the frame. (This is an exercise; you don’t have to buy anything!) Confronted with the task of framing, a child must analyze and decide in a concrete way how best to enhance its significant features. Meanwhile, back on the home front, install art everywhere you can: in the bedrooms, in the breakfast room, on the sun porch. Don’t forget that blank wall in the bathroom! Borrow art from public libraries (it often is possible). Look in second-hand shops for visually striking items to display: porcelain and glass figurines, hand-woven textiles, rustic folk art. Let the child decide where the art hangs (or sits), week by week. All reactions are valid, from “Hey, I get it first, ‘cause I’m the oldest,” to “Oh no, don’t put it in my room! I don’t like it. Put it in Tommy’s!” Rotate the same piece of art to several locations. Discuss whether it “speaks” differently depending on light and the function of the space.

Recreate Historical Dialectics Older children may find themselves fascinated by the classic “battles” in art history, such as the biting review written in Paris by Louis Leroy in 1874 degrading the paintings that later would be deemed Impressionist masterpieces. Students will be surprised to learn of the nightmarish 1937 exhibit in Munich of paintings labeled “degenerate” by Adolf Hitler, many of which were by respected Jewish artists. Encourage students to learn about these turning points in art history and to debate the merits of the situation, either within the context of those times, or within the values of today’s popular (visual) culture.

Build the Narrative The goal always is to build the narrative about a piece of art. No matter what the student’s assessment, the multi-step processes of discovering, engaging, analyzing, and drawing conclusions are guaranteed (and I stand by that verb) to strengthen a young person’s receptivity to art. There will be sufficient time as an adult to deepen specific knowledge about art. But nothing can replace early exposure on tangible levels that transcend “textbook knowledge” and speak directly to a child’s heart, mind, and curiosity.

Analyzing and Critiquing Even the youngest child can critique art. Start with art in the homes of friends and relatives. Look especially for family-heritage pieces: “Why do you think Mr. Howard’s granddad brought that painting from Holland when he immigrated?” Or, “Why would Great-Aunt Betty use plain blue cloth for that star in the corner of the quilt, but speckled blue for all of the others?” Launch an art scavenger hunt when out in public. Stand before art and decorative items displayed in hotel lobbies, waiting rooms, church foyers—wherever you happen to be. Help younger children form a set of rudimentary questions, such as: • What is this? (a painting, an engraving, a cross-stitch, a sculpture) • Does it have a label or indication of title and author?

e are dwarfs mounted upon the shoulders of giants," Bernard of Chartres told his scholars in the eleventh century. The great Schoolman meant that we modern folk incline toward the opinion that wisdom was born with our generation. We see so far only because of the tremendous stature of those giants, our ancestors, upon whose shoulders we stand. Gothic architecture in the eleventh century could not have existed without its foundations in the ninth and tenth centuries—or for that matter, in the architecture of ancient Syria. Atomic physics in our sense could not have come into being without the speculative spirit of the seventeenth century—or for that matter, without the intuitions of the pre-Socratic Greeks. Our civilization is an immense continuity and essence. Bernard, Bishop of Chartres, was right: If we ignore or disdain those ancestral giants who uphold us in our modern vainglory, we tumble down into the ditch of unreason. A French philosopher of our time, Gabriel Marcel, writes that the only healthy society is the society which respects tradition. We ought to live, Marcel says, in an atmosphere of "diffused gratitude"—of sympathy for the hopes and achievements of our ancestors, from whom we derive our life and our culture, and which we are morally obliged to pass on undiminished, if not enhanced, to our descendants.

We are grateful to the giants upon whose shoulders we stand. This feeling or atmosphere of diffused veneration is weakened in our modern age, for many people live only for themselves, ignoring the debt they owe to the past and the responsibility they owe to the future. They are ungrateful; and ingratitude brings on its own punishment. Normative knowledge, then, is no burden, but instead a rich patrimony. Those who refuse it must be taught by personal experience—a hard master, as Benjamin Franklin says, though fools will have no other. Edmund Burke gave this concept of willing obligation to the dead, the living, and those yet unborn its most moving expression. We are all subject, he wrote, to "the contract of eternal society." This immortal contract is made between God and mankind, and between the generations that have perished from the earth, and the generation that is living now, and the generations that are yet to come. It is a covenant binding on us all. No man has a right to abridge that contract at will; and if we do break it, we suffer personally and all society suffers; and we are cast out of this civil social order (built by the giants) into an "antagonist world" of total disorder—or, as the New Testament has it, into the outer darkness, where there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Sometimes we witness them.

Courage One afternoon before her regular blood work, Michelle settled into a good book in the back seat of our car. She seemed unconcerned about the painful needles invariably wielded by rookie phlebotomists. All of this awaited her but she pressed on, as she does every day. As I watched her through the rearview mirror, I decided to tell her what I had been thinking. “Michelle,” I said, “I want you to know how much I admire your courage.” Surprised and somewhat embarrassed, she covered her face with her hands. FSR is a balanced, age-appropriate approach to phonics and reading, with a serious focus on correct pencil grip and letter formation. Also, while many phonics programs today use the ladder approach (consonant-vowel blending), we prefer the more traditional (vowel-consonant) approach combined with word families. n his famous essay on fairy stories, J. R. R. Tolkien asserted that one of the most important facets of fairytales is that they hold up a “Mirror of scorn and pity towards Man.” The fairy story, Tolkien wrote, “may be used as a Mirour de l’Omme” (mirror of man), as something that shows us ourselves. If this is so, and it is, it means that the greatest fairy stories are not mere fantasies that serve as a flight from reality, but are a powerful means by which we can see ourselves and others more clearly. In this sense, and paradoxically, the greatest fairy stories are also works of realism. They show us reality. The best way of putting Tolkien’s words to the test is to see how The Lord of the Rings, probably the most popular fairy story ever told, holds up a mirror that shows us ourselves. In The Lord of the Rings there is one character, above all others, who can be said to represent us. This is Boromir, who is the only mere Man in The Fellowship of the Ring. The Fellowship consists of four hobbits, a dwarf, an elf, a wizard, a king … and a man. Our sole 52

representative in the Fellowship which sets out from Rivendell is Boromir. It is Boromir we see when we look in the mirror. The “Mirror of scorn and pity” shows us a traitor. It shows us the one who betrays the fellowship, who severs the bond of friendship. Boromir, as the representative of humanity, is moved to this act of treachery because he desires to use evil means (the Ring) for a good end (saving Minas Tirith). In order to attain the evil means that he wants to use, he employs evil means (theft) to get it. He is starting as he no doubt will continue, justifying one evil action after another on the grounds that it serves an ultimately good end. Boromir, blinded by pride, does not see that we cannot use evil means to a good end without corrupting the good end itself, making it evil. If Minas Tirith had defeated Sauron’s army by using the power of the Ring, it would have fallen under the Ring’s power, thereby ceasing to be a civilization worth defending and becoming an evil empire worth resisting. Such a victory would be pyrrhic. Indeed it

would be the harshest and most ironic of defeats. It would not have been the defeat of evil but its victory. It would have been better for the people of Minas Tirith to fall nobly in battle against the evil enemy than to have succumbed to evil themselves. And lest we fail to get the point, we can see that history is full of examples of people taking the Boromir option, employing evil means to further an ostensibly noble cause. We think perhaps of the French Revolution and the use of the guillotine in the service of “liberté, egalité et fraternité” (all good ends in themselves) and the Reign of Terror which ensued. We think of the show trials and mass executions in communist countries in the name of the same freedom, equality, and brotherhood. We think of the systematic extermination of the weak, the disabled, and the defenseless in the womb in the name of “freedom of choice.” In showing us Boromir, Tolkien is holding up a “Mirror of scorn and pity,” showing us ourselves. This is what Tolkien called the “applicability” of a story, the way in which it can be applied to our own world and our own lives. 1-877-862-1097

It should be added that Tolkien gives us other characters in The Lord of the Rings who serve as a mirror of ourselves, such as Faramir, Boromir’s brother, who states that he would not pick up the Ring if he saw it lying on the side of the road, and that he would not snare even an orc with a falsehood; in other words, that he would not tell a lie, even to the devil himself, never succumbing to an evil means to a good end. Faramir is, therefore, not only Boromir’s brother but his alter ego or even his antithesis and antidote. If Boromir shows us who we are tempted to be, Faramir shows us who we should be; one is the sinner, the other the saint. And Tolkien also shows us ourselves in the character of Gollum, who is so consumed by his desire for self-gratification that he has become addicted to the bad habits that are destroying him, shriveling his soul into a mere wreckage of what it once was. There are, therefore, several ways that Tolkien allows us to find ourselves in Middle-earth, seeing ourselves reflected in the characters and the lessons they teach us about what it is to be human.
