President’s Update Jonathan May

The 2016 YLD calendar is in full swing and the first three months have brought great programming to our membership and the larger Memphis community. In February, the Memphis YLD put on another hugely successful High School Mock Trial competition over the course of two weeks. Every year it is remarkable to see the talent and skill these high students demonstrate. I had the honor of judging the final round with Judge Gina Higgins and MBA President Shea Wellford, and I am fairly certain the students from White Station and Saint Mary's were as good as many trial lawyers find in a real Shelby County courtrooms. We are incredibly grateful to the more than 100 local attorneys who volunteered their time to serve as team coaches and competition judges. We also appreciate the Shelby County Circuit and Chancery Court judges and the University of Memphis College of Law hosting our competition. Lastly, I cannot say enough about the hard work of Mary Wu and Josh Baker, who organized and executed another great competition. In March, our CLE Committee, led by Julia Kavanagh and Jonathan Lindsey, put together a CLE centered around the Netflix documentary "Making a Murderer". The CLE was open to the public and featured a panel of local criminal defense attorneys and prosecutors, moderated by Judge Gerald Skahan. Everybody needs CLE hours, but when you can get them while talking about something as timely, entertaining and confounding as "Making a Murderer", all the better. Check out the CLE report for information about our upcoming CLE on privacy law issues!

This being Hoop City, the ďŹ rst quarter also included the YLD night with the Memphis Grizzlies complete with our #901Law growl towels - and the YLD Basketball League. If you missed out on a chance to participate in these programs, make sure you keep an eye out for our upcoming YLD Bowling Night, the annual YLD Charity Golf Scramble in September, and a YLD kickball team we hope to form this fall. We are working on some exciting social programing that will give us a chance to get together in some new ways, including a night at the Levitt Shell. Speaking of upcoming events, we encourage all YLD Members to attend the great events that Law Week Committee Chair (and former YLD Board Member) Matt May and his Committee have planned for us. The Law Week Wrap Party will be held on Friday, May 6, 2016 beginning at 5:00 pm in Court Square. Please join us for the Memorial Service at Calvary Episcopal Church on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at 12:00 pm. As always, please contact me or any other Board Member if you would like to become more involved with the YLD or would like to serve on one of our Committees. We are excited to get into our summer calendar and look forward to seeing all of you at our upcoming events! If you have not already, I would encourage you to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter & Instagram.

Privacy Issues in Litigation: Everything You Need to Know from HIPAA to Social Media, will take place at the Memphis Bar Association Offices at 145 Court Avenue, Suite 301 on May 26, 2016 from 3-5:00 pm. For more information, please contact Jonathan A. Lindsey at jlindsey@martintate.com or Julia Kavanagh at jkavanagh@bakerdonelson.com. For MBA members, the cost is only $50 if you register by May 24. Register now here and check the MBA’s calendar for more information on this and other upcoming CLE courses. Privacy issues play an ever-increasing role in the world of litigation. Aside from the obvious duty of confidentiality to the client, young lawyers increasingly must be able to properly navigate the treatment of sensitive and protected information, including medical information pertaining to an opposing party. The influx of personal information regarding individuals available on the Internet also creates issues regarding the proper use of such information, both in the context of litigation and in our clients’ lives. As more seasoned lawyers often look to young associates on issues pertaining to technology, knowledge of the latest developments in these areas is a must for the young lawyer. Please join us on May 26, 2016 from 3-5:00 pm for a CLE seminar covering these important issues. Leslie Isaacman with Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, P.C., will speak first, covering the basics of the HIPAA law and the obligations it places on lawyers litigating cases involving medical information. Ms. Isaacman will be followed by Mary Wager with Rice Amundsen & Caperton, PLLC, who will speak on a vast array of social media issues, from the proper use of materials in the context of a litigated case from discovery through trial to cases involving underlying social media activity, including divorces and revenge pornography legal matters.

SOCIAL

Natalie Bursi & Adam Johnson

The YLD was out in full force to cheer on the Grizzlies’ D-League team versus the Denver Nuggets on March 30 after enjoying a rousing happy hour at 12 Bar, sponsored by Matt VanCleve with Chartwell Financial Group. Unfortunately, the Grizz could not grit ‘n grind their way up that mountain, falling 109-105. Be on the lookout for the annual YLD Bowling Night in July at Billy Hardwick’s All Star Lanes as Motion to Strike will be back on the docket . Social will also meet Service Saturday, June 25. We’ll be participating in a Habitat for Humanity project and ending the day at a concert at Levitt Shell. Stay tuned for details.

The YLD Basketball League concluded April 25 with our Championship Game between Team FedEx and the Carpenter Law Firm. In a slight upset, Team FedEx defeated the one-seed Carpenter Law Firm 80-67. Thank you to everyone that helped to make this year a success. Save the date for our YLD Golf Tournament benefiting the Boys and Girls Club. The tournament will be held at Galloway Golf Course on September 23, 2016. More information will be provided soon.

PUBLIC SERVICE

Josh Baker & Mary Wu

YLD Hosted Another Successful Legal Lines On April 21, 2016, the Young Lawyers’ Division coordinated the Annual Legal Lines Event held at WREG-TV by staffing a total of six phone lines for 2.5 hours and providing free legal advice to the News Channel 3 viewing area. As usual, the phones began ringing as soon as the event began and did not stop until the conclusion of the event. This year, a total of twenty-one local attorneys, including members of the YLD, manned the phone lines. Callers who had questions that could not be easily answered by volunteer attorneys were referred to other local agencies. As always, New Channel 3 promoted Legal Lines leading up to the event on its Live at 9 program. Legal questions ranged from simple personal injury matters and concerns regarding domestic issues such as divorce and child support to complicated real estate and probate matters. We would like to thank all the attorneys who volunteered for this worthwhile event and the New Channel 3 staff for working with us to make it possible.
