FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT Jonathan May If you haven’t been keeping up with us, you’re missing a great summer for the YLD! Part of our mission this year was to find some fresh programs that would allow us to engage you, as YLD members, in interesting new ways. Part of that has been through our push for better social media engagement, and Shayla Purifoy has led the charge to build our Twitter, Instagram and Facebook following. If you haven’t “liked” or “followed” accordingly, do it! We have also worked to plan social events that go beyond the usual happy hour, and the First Annual YLD Night at the Levitt Shell was outstanding. We had more than 30 YLD-members, spouses and kids out for a great – if hot – night of music and food trucks and beer. While I will leave it up to Adam Johnson to decide whether there is a Second Annual event, I would encourage you all to be there if so! As you’ll see below, we also had a very successful bowling night at Billy Hardwick’s, working with the Campaign for Equal Justice to raise money to support MALS. The Privacy Law CLE in May was really strong, and the upcoming program on legal aspects of starting a business is a must-attend for young lawyers looking to expand their business practice. It is hard to believe we are already into the home-stretch of the YLD calendar, but we are about 6 weeks from our annual charity golf scramble. Mark down September 23rd on your calendar – defend it from depositions and hearings – and plan to join us at Galloway to enjoy great golf and cold beer to raise money for the Boys & Girls Club. Next time you hear from me, it will be time to talk about nominations for the 2017 YLD Executive Board. If you think you may be interested in running, I recommend you reach out to one of the current board members and talk to them about it. And if you haven’t already been doing so, make sure you come out this fall so people know who you are when they seen your name on the ballot! Until then. Jonathan

CLE

Jonathan A. Lindsey & Julia Kavanagh Thanks to everyone who came out to the YLD’s Privacy Issues in Litigation CLE on May 26th. We had great attendance and fantastic questions from those who came out. The YLD CLE committee would like to extend a very special thank you to our speakers, Leslie Isaacman and Mary Wagner. Leslie gave a great overview of the federal HIPAA law and how it applies to handling PHI in the context of a civil case. Mary provided a comprehensive and sometimes entertaining look at the use of social media information in litigation cases, from discovery through trial. In August, the YLD will be providing a CLE focused on preparing attorneys to tackle legal issues faced by startups and other emerging companies. Entitled, “Where to Start with Startups,” the CLE is on Tuesday, August 22nd from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the MBA offices. The opening speaker will be Eric Mathews, CEO and Founder of Start Co, who will discuss the startup climate in Memphis and the needs of startups, in general. Following Eric’s presentation, local attorneys will provide sessions on the following legal issues in the context of emerging companies: (i) entity formation and corporate governance (by Emily T. Brackstone, Baker Donelson); (ii) employment law, including employment agreements and restrictive covenants (by Gary S. Peeples, Burch Porter); and (iii) intellectual property (by Adam Eckstein, Martin Tate). The CLE will conclude with an attorney roundtable discussion on issues of professional responsibility faced by attorneys representing emerging companies. Thanks to all and we hope to see you out at our August CLE!

Thanks to everyone who came out for the YLD’s Annual Motion to Strike at Billy Hardwick’s on July 28th! Food and drinks were provided by our wonderful sponsors, IPSCO, the Campaign for Equal Justice Young Lawyers' Committee, and Westlaw, and we were able to raise money for MALS. Congratulations to Aaron Kandel, who won “Most Strikes” and “Highest Score” and to Shayla Purifoy and Jason Yasinsky, who won “Best Dressed.” Join us Tuesday, September 13th 4:30 pm at Bounty on Broad for the “How to Work a Room” CLE. John Tarpley with Lewis Thomason will give tips about client development. Stick around for the happy hour after sponsored by FindLaw with Thomson Reuters. Check MBA’s website and our Facebook page for upcoming registration.
