ISSUE NUMBER 78 - JUNE/ JULY/ AUGUST 2016
JUST A THOUGHT Dear Passionate Readers, I am writing you this letter right after finishing a meeting with one of my visionary clients. As a self-made man, and one who has gone through many of the trials of life, when he speaks, I listen. And his words were simple. Changing times need a change in mind frame. “If you want to sail around your own shores, a small boat will do, but if you want to venture into the open waters, if you want to truly expand and explore, then you better equip yourself with a much larger boat, else you will tumble on the first wave” How true! Curious and driven by nature, I have to agree that my mind frame has to expand with the expansion of my dreams and ambitions! This is our summer issue and many of us will be traveling on and off this season; exploring and experiencing, yet the most exciting journey remains, the one we take with our minds… In one human life’s journey … there is still so much to explore… Till next issue,

MEN’S PASSION - June - July - August 2016 - ISSUE #78 - SOLD IN KUWAIT KD 3
This edition of MEN’S PASSION is a celebration of those amongst us who step outside of themselves to explore not only the world, but whilst doing so exploring their limits. A shared trait is an overt combination of single-mindedness with a high degree of social responsibility. You’ll learn that whilst getting much out of what is often a solo focused endeavour, they are invariably doing so with a bigger picture - and one for the greater good.

THE EXPLORERS
Ali Khalil Husain Explorer and co-founder of Husaak
S
ome people are destined to remain tourists throughout their life. Others become travels, even explorers. Ali Khalil Husain is one of this rare, and very special, breed. He took his spirit for adventure further than most when, in 2013, he co-founded Husaak Adventures. A natural extension of his passion for adventure, and following an increasing number of requests to take others on his travels with him, today Husaak is one of the leading adventure travel companies in the region, and organizes regular expeditions within some of the world’s most remote places. What does the life of this explorer-businessman entail? We grabbed him at a moment when he wasn’t in a wadi, up a mountain or down a cave network and sat down to learn more.
THE EXPLORERS
The Arabian world had a great tradition of adventure travellers and explorers throughout histor y. It’s perhaps not so sparkling now. Why do you feel things are changing for the better now though? Many explorers that came from the region, Ahmad Bin Fadlan with his tales about the Nor thern land exploration; Ibn Batota; Ahmad Bin Majed and many others to whom histor y did not do justice – all have personally inspired me. We are a culture that was forced to explore in order to survive due to the unforgiving nature of our land. Water is scarce and so is vegetation, so the need to be curious and creative was par t of our histor y - not because we wanted it to be, but rather than because we had to find a way survive with ver y little. Looking at today though, in the era of oil wealth, all of this was lost ver y quickly. What was planted in our genes for thousands of years has been lost over just 50 years, but I believe that the instinct is still there. We see it in our community of explorers, it takes just one trip and people are already addicted, feeling good and the experience definitely has a major impact on them. We’ve all, globally, become accustomed to travel being so easy that in the modern era the focus is on the destination. There’s a return to the journey itself being a focus. Can you give me your thoughts on this. Totally agree with you here, I think this - especially in the GCC - is the way we are heading. The whole concept of conventional travel is no longer attractive to the
young generation. I do believe that it had to do with the transition between being extremely poor nations to postoil rich - and it took couple of generations to overcome the ‘need’ for a 5-star holiday and now the younger generation are seeking more of an experience rather than merely a vacation. They’re attracted by the 5 billion stars in the open skies rather than the 5 stars hotels. This generation already has luxur y within their ever yday life, and now there is more interest in going back to basics. Back to something their body will recognize as ‘feel good’ and ‘feel satisfied’ which almost guaranteed in ever y adventure. What are your personal adventure in this form?
reasons
for
seeking
For me, there are many reasons – par tly it was seeking peace, feeding my curiosity, enjoying the physical challenge and definitely loving those trips that make you feel small, where your problems will feel so small you will laugh at them when you are standing so insignificant in the middle of majestic mountains. After Husaak became a business and travel developed a commercial perspective, it’s become about changing people, giving them a different perspective in life, seeing the change that happens within 48 hours is just a great feeling. Explorers are dif ferent from others. What are the qualities a natural-born explorer possesses? Curiosity is number 1. Drive and energy are number 2 and the passion to what they do is close behind.
10 11
THE EXPLORERS
Through Husaak you of fer ‘trips’ and ‘expeditions’. What are the additional qualities you’d look for in someone wishing to join an expedition? Someone who is seeking change, someone who is curious to find out what does it take to shake yourself, someone who is not there to follow the crowd. Are Hussak’s journey’s simply sanitized ways for people to feel they’ve had an ‘experience’ – or do you of fer a genuine experience that extends beyond luxur y travel? How? I think you must tr y our trips for you to get the answer, our experiences are raw, we tr y to make it as raw as possible, sometimes that means adding risk, and taking risk. I can easily do adventure ‘Disney World’-style, but I chose to keep things back to basics. Back to doing ever ything on your own and being fully sustainable as a team for 48 hours. Have you had situations where, part way through a journey, a traveller has decided they’ve taken on too much? There were couple of incidents where travelers felt they wanted to stop and turn around, most of them we manage to encourage them to look again, and turn their experience into a success stor y and make the traveler complete the journey. But in a few cases we have sent folks back to the camp to wait. Where are the next sought af ter areas adventurers are asking you to take them? The unique factor in our experiences is that we offer them in virgin places, we are not interested in mountain peaks or heavily commercialized locations. We are after places where others don’t dare to go or where no tour operators exist. During our Tanzania trip, for example, we reached villages that hardly had any interaction with outsiders. In our Mongolia trip, we relied on the team to get from one end to the other of the country on their own. This means going through villages, places that can never be visited if you are in a conventional tour to Mongolia. Our Alaska trip
THE EXPLORERS
is based on my own personal experience after living there for 4 years, our Arctic hikes are based on no trails, we make our own path, and so on. Can you give me a couple of unforgettable experiences? In almost every trip there are many unforgettable experiences. During my most recent travel, we had 2 teams going caving in two different parts of a mountain but part of the same caving system. A rainstorm occurred as one team was just leaving the top cave, and the situation completely changed within minutes - now we had running rivers going through the cave. We managed to escape from the top cave but were extremely worried about the other team at the bottom. It took about 2 hours before the flood reached them. We were stuck at the top for more than 24 hours with no phone or access to civilization and they were equally exposed. We met the next day in the morning and both teams were so happy and in tears to see the others survived the storm. It brought all thirty participants together as a family instantly, even though some of them just met for the first time. Best moment on an expedition? My best moments remain the smile on people’s faces at the end of ever y trip. Worst moment on an expedition. The worst moments for me are always around caving, especially when going inside deep caves, I am usually the last one at any major drop. The drops are pitch black and you are sending people down on a rope and you can’t see them and they can’t see anything. Until you get all the par ticipants back to the main entrance safelythat’s always my worst feeling. Where is top of your list of places for adventure and exploration? The Arabian Peninsula remains one of the most untouched places in the world and one of my favorite to explore. Of other similar locations I would say Mongolia is a favourite.

Arwa Abulhassan Traveller and adventurer
S
ome of us are born curious. Born with the desire to look at things differently. Indeed, sometimes with the need to look at different things completely. When Arwa Abulhassan was just 13 years old and her family booked a Caribbean cruise vacation, she booked herself in to a campsite in France. Not what you’d call classically typical behavior for a teenage girl – but Arwa is far from typical in many aspects.
THE EXPLORERS
Today, married and with three young children, she alternates her weekends between wifely and motherly duties and weekends down a cave or on a col. She values both equally, and has become adept at balancing one with the other. Remove either, and somehow there’s a whole lot less Arwa. As she grew, still a teenager, wanderlust took her to Chile and Tanzania. Neither place she visited as a tourist, in both cases she engaged her host countries as a traveller. “Even at a young age”, she recalls, “for me travelling was about learning, about becoming part of the place I was in”. And this is the classic distinction between a tourist and something more – a traveller. While a tourist sits on the outside and observes, a traveller – such as Arwa – dives in to her environment and engages. For her, travelling is “About experiences. It’s about learning”. She studied abroad – international relations, and ultimately a masters degree in international law. Worthy qualifications, but neither of which spring to mind as being much help when crossing an ice field. And while they’re useful in other ways, Arwa has learned far more about the world and its people during her years of traversing the globe. Her passion has created a way of life for her. As International Expeditions Manager she’s now at the heart of many other people’s adventures too.
14 15
THE EXPLORERS
The business aspect wasn’t part of the plan – it’s something that she drifted towards.
welcomed them. With not a word being spoken, respect was gained and her and her group became part of the celebration.
“We were travelling often, just doing our own thing. Family and friends were always keen to hear our stories whenever we returned, and they’d start to ask to be included on the next journey we took”, she says. Adding fellow travellers, first in small numbers, their ad hoc adventure tours quickly became a fully-fledged business with, today, hundreds having benefited from her experience.
It is this ability to connect with people, and with the lands they traverse, which marks out a true traveller.
Far from this detracting from her own pleasure as a freespirited traveller, it has added to her satisfaction as she sees others share her same experiences. Her wise observance of people and their traditions pays great rewards. She recalls an experience in Tanzania: “I was with a small group of travellers, at a short distance, a Masai village. I knew, but the way they were dressed, that they were in the middle of an important event. Something unique to the Masai was going on. I look closer, and could see the village was marking the passing of boys in becoming warriors”. Aware that to amble in to such a setting would be inappropriate, she and her group waited at the edge of the village. They were approached by a warrior. Seeing him come near, Arwa bowed her head in the distinctive style of a Masai – something she had learned during her earlier years in the country. She gestured to another of her group to do the same. The warrior
Of course, there are other experiences a traveller must go through that, although still memorable, real different emotions – for example the occasion she was chased by a jaguar. Her life is a balance of many elements – work and family we’ve mentioned. It is also a balance of risk and reward. “When we travel, we push ourselves outside our normal every day limits”, she says. “Those that travel with us do the same thing. This is part of an individual and shared experience. It’s my role, and the role of others in the team, to ensure we’re always making calculated risks though”. True adventure is measured, it is controlled. In this manner the rewards are the greatest. In its purest form, adventure is not extreme, it’s not ‘fear for the sake of it’. Arwa’s journeys involved challenges – challenges to the body, the mind and the soul. Returning home, every traveller should be changed by their expeiences. Two weeks on the beach may be just what we need to top up the tan, but two weeks of travel and exploration with Arwa and her creates a different view, and one that endures.
GCC HIKING
Together We Unite The First GCC Hiking Championship
I
n late spring 2016, 66 athletes from across the GCC took part in the first annual hiking championship, held in Ras Al Khaimah. From from a stroll across a hillside, this was a highly competitive event – a true test of fitness wrapped up in a spirit of adventure.
GCC HIKING
Comprising six teams of 11 athletes from across the UAE, KSA, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait, the Hiking Championship tested participants’ fitness levels as they made their way through the rough terrains of Jebel Jais, reaching heights over 1,000 meters. The teams met the day before the competition where they were briefed on the day ahead and had the chance to meet their fellow athletes at a designated base camp by Wadi Galila Dam. Members of the public were also invited to take part in a fun day of music, traditional food, and folk dances and were also offered the opportunity to enjoy climbing, camping and cycling competitions. The strenuous but rewarding hike finished at the top of Jebel Jais Mountain - the official finish line for the competition
- where the United Arab Emirates team completed the competition in just 01:58:00 minutes. The winning team was shortly followed by Omani and Saudi Hikers who finished in 02:08:00 and 02:20:00 minutes respectively. Haitham Mattar, CEO, Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority said: “Ras Al Khaimah provides a beautiful backdrop for hosting a wide range of great outdoor activities. One of our goals for 2016 and beyond is to host a variety of exhilarating outdoor events, with a great deal of focus on sporting events in particular. The Hiking challenge is a great example of this. It is open to residents and visitors alike, and further positions Ras Al Khaimah as the ultimate outdoor destination.” Yasser Sharaf, President & Founder of Sharaf HQ Investment, the founders of Adventure HQ said, “As an Emirati company, we are delighted to hold this GCC initiative in Ras Al Khaimah – it brings our community together and inspires people to stay healthy and discover the great outdoors in a beautiful setting. The competing teams are great role models of how our passion can bring nations together as one, and challenge ourselves collectively to reach great heights. The challenging route gave the athletes the opportunity to test their stamina and strength as they enjoyed a beautiful route through the UAE’s tallest mountain, Jebel Jais”. Following the success of this year’s Hiking Championship, Adventure HQ plan to make the championship an annual event.

THE CONSUMMATE EXPLORER
Zed Al Refai
M
Explorer, mountaineer, environmental advocate
ention mountaineering to anyone in the Middle East and it won’t be long before the name of Zed Al Refai is mentioned. Equally, mention Zed Al Refai and it’s an absolute certainty that the response will focus on his achievements on Mount Everest. Yet there’s so much more to the man and his life. Yes, he was the first Arab to summit the world’s tallest mountain – and that’s a remarkable story in itself – but it’s only part of the story of this complex, multilayered and passionate life. It could be said that being the first to summit Everest has proved somewhat of a curse on Zed – he laments that, invariably, it’s the first topic that comes up in interviews. Indeed, it is often overlooked that he has combined a successful business career with his other adventurous exploits – he’s filled his life with as variety of challenges, each of which would provide more than enough tales to fills pages of this magazine. And along the way he’s found time to give back – to those he’s worked with, climbed with and lived with, and is currently largely focused on giving back to the planet on which we all live. Advocating sustainability is high on Zed’s list of priorities. “I’ve travelled enough in my life to see nature in many forms”, he says, “and if we’re going to be able to continue, we’re all going to have to commit to respecting nature a little more than we currently do”. It’s an aim that none of us can afford to overlook and, of course, it’s incredibly topical with climate change becoming ever more apparent to even the most casual of observers. For Zed it’s a personal passion – conserving our precious water resources, making efforts to recycle, considering our choices when it comes to the environment. “We’re already making a difference”, he’s positive in his assertion, “but we’ve got a long way to go. Everything we do now is about planting a seed of thought in people’s minds, it’s about making changes today that will make a big different to our tomorrows. It’s everyone’s responsibility to do their best. I see people are taking things seriously now, and awareness is improving”. Zed is a product of his experiences. He’s happy to admit, “Mountaineering taught me everything”. Behind the title ‘first Arab to summit Everest’ lies the story of two unsuccessful attempts were illness and seriously adverse weather conspired to force a return to base camp. There are multiple tales involving other mountains too – numerous ascents of Kilimanjaro, Elbrus and others. And the first Arab to successfully complete the mountaineer’s iconic Seven Summits (the highest peaks on all continents).
THE CONSUMMATE EXPLORER
Turning 50 years old later in 2016, he was climbing during a period when it was a largely unfollowed sport in the Middle East. That he became the ‘first’ to achieve so much was purely incidental to his successes. “I didn’t set out to be the first at any other these things. The truth is, at the time, I was the only one climbing intensively. A life in the United States and, subsequently in Switzerland from 1992, cemented his connection with outdoors adventure and particularly with mountains. The numbers of climber of Everest in recent seasons has provoked accusations that the experience has become ‘sanitized’ – that the magic has gone. It’s become ‘too easy’ to summit. For sure, some of the challenge has been reduced – when your dollars are transformed in to comfortable conditions at base camp, greater access to oxygen bottles (and willing sherpas to carry them for you), better equipment for the climb and getting use of today’s technology to provide reliable weather predictions a climber can be guaranteed an ‘easier’ climb than those of just a decade ago, but for Zed the true challenges remain. “Climbing a mountain is physical, but it’s also a mental challenge”, he insists. And he’s the difference between someone who sets out purely to summit and someone who is a true mountaineer and adventurer. For Zed, the mountain is the experience – not only the summit. He questions those whose mountaineering CVs are short and end with a summit of Everest. To him, his achievement remains a stage in a long love-affair with climbing. Today, after many years of climbing and having ‘done it all’ he’s as passionate about climbing smaller mountains as he is big. “Every mountain I climb these days is Everest to me. Each climb, each route and each day provides its own special challenges. Nothing I climb means anything less than Everest”. From this man, whose pedigree is unchallenged, by understanding his approach to life much can be learned.
20 21
THE CONSUMMATE EXPLORER
He’s keen to give back, and is involved in a number of initiatives to encourage a younger generation to explore not only the world, but also their own limits. He’s a partner at Rahhalah – a UAE and Kuwait-based adventure organization founded by Suzanne Al Houby – the Arab world’s first female to summit Everest. “I know what my climbing and my adventures have created within me. And during my work with Rahhalah I’ve seen similar experiences do the same to others. I’ve seen people leave on an expedition, and return as changed human beings”.
Rahhalah and their Transformational Journeys have the simple aim of transforming lives. Their 2016 program includes Alaska, Borneo, Peru and Morocco. Well resourced, well provisioned and well organized, these are no less life changing experiences than those Zed went on alone during his early years. We may not have all been born with the overtly pioneering and adventurous spirit the Zed Al Refai demonstrates in every aspect of his life – but through his efforts, we’re all able to test ourselves and experience the thrill of exploration – of the mind, the body and the globe.

ven for the tourist who’s seen it all, look at it again through a traveller’s eyes and you’ll be amazed. Think differently, and take a fresh look at where and how to travel. Here’s a few of the very best places to go this year.
Greenland Top-dollar wilderness Natural Habitat Adventures’ brand-new eco base camp, with high-thread-count linens, hot showers, and a gourmet chef, is as close to a luxurious safari-style camp as you can get in these parts. Set on Sermilik Fjord at the edge of the Greenland Ice Sheet, one of the least explored regions of the Arctic, the camp is within view of 5,000-foot peaks that
plunge into the sea. Why pay top dollar to sleep in polar bear country in temperatures that barely hit the fifties in August? Because as Olaf Malver, the Danish camp founder who has spent 26 years exploring this coastline, says, “You will be dazzled by its dizzying beauty, strength, and simmering silence.” Guests can take guided ten-mile hikes through tundras, kayak among humpback whales, and visit Inuit villagers who live by centuries-old traditions. From $8,995 for nine days.
WHERE TO BE INSPIRED
Chile Adventure hub Running 2,610 miles north to south, Chile is the longest country in the world, and 80 percent of it is covered by mountains. With vast wild spaces like 650,000-acre Patagonia National Park (which opened to the public this year), pristine rivers with big trout, classic old-school ski areas, and pisco sours and damn good wine, it’s hard to go wrong. Consider these dream itineraries: (1) Fly into the capital city of Santiago, then work your way south to 370,000-acre Yendegaia National Park in Tierra del Fuego. The former cattle ranch opened in 2013, but very few people
have been lucky enough to explore this swath of untouched glaciers and peaks. Be one of the first to take it all in on a 16day boat-assisted hiking and sailing epic with Chile Nativo ($8,000). THE LUXE WATCHES
Marco Tedeschi Regional Director, Hublot
A
microtechnical, design and surface engineer, Marco Tedeschi joined Hublot in 2007 as Product Manager, handling watch design, prototyping and production. In 2011, as Head of Middle East & Africa, he implemented and developed the brand’s strategy, tailored a marketing strategy for the Arab world and expanded the Hublot boutiques network. As Creative Manager and a member of the product creation committee, he collaborates closely with Jean-Claude Biver and Ricardo Guadalupe on new product designs and trends. He also manages special brand partnership projects. In Kuwait recently, we sat with the dynamic young Marco as he took us through the wonderful world of Hublot’s novelties. • What distinguishes Hublot from other brands, apart from the fabulous fusion of materials you employ? We are know as exemplifying the art of fusion. But this refers not only to the way we work with materials, but also with the way we connect the past to the future. We’re also connecting tradition to innovation. In everything we do, we always try to be the first, to be different and unique. We have a good example here with the new collection – All Black – we were the first to create that concept. We have numerous examples throughout the collection. Another example is the Berluti – newly launched. • In 2015 the Big Bang, the iconic watch of Hublot celebrated its ten-year anniversary. Launched in 2005, the world was very different. How do you ensure the Big Bang maintains its relevance in 2016? That’s quite funny, because since 2005 the same watch has remained the best-seller. The first and iconic steel Big Bang is still the number one. Over the years we have made many variations, but the first became the icon – and when people think about Hublot this is the watch that first comes to mind. • Which were the key launches at Baselworld? We had many. The Berluti I’ve already mentioned. The Big Bang Unico was a significant launch, as was the new Big Bang for ladies. Across our four products lines Big Bang is still the main line. The Hublot Masterpiece stands out as a piece that attracted a lot of positive comments.
HUBLOT
• What was the reaction to these new launches – in particular with your clients in the region? If I tell you we have a waiting list in many countries for our new models, that will give you some idea as to the reception our watches received. Most of the novelties will begin to be delivered now, the order book is full, and so our only challenge that remains is to deliver. • What makes a watch become an icon? For a watch to become an icon, this is something that must be bestowed upon it by the people. There’s no recipe to creating an icon. Having said that, I feel that ever y ‘icon’ must contain cer tain ‘codes’, for want of a better word. It has to be simple, not too fancy. It has to have a stor y behind it. But no one can predict in advance whether a new watch is destined to become an icon. • Regardless, what’s your feeling about this year’s new models? Do you have a feeling that any of these are destined to become icons? That’s a good question. I really believe that the one-click ladies Big Bang is going to make its mark on the watch business. The one-click function is ver y significant. It’s
already on the Unico – and it makes changing straps ver y easy. For women, this is hugely impor tant in order to accessorize their watch. • You’ve previously launched limited edition pieces in Dubai, Qatar and Kuwait. Can you tell us about the process of conceptualizing and creating these. And when will we see the next? The next will be at the end of this year. It will be the second Kuwait edition. The process is long. What I always insist on doing discussing and even discovering the concept with our local par tners, but also with our clients. When we make a dedicated watch for a dedicated market it’s impor tant that we give them what they want. It is perhaps the only time we listen to the market so intently. Usually we don’t do market studies – we create what we believe in, and then create a market for it. • What is your personal relationship with time? I’m always running after it! I wish there were 48 hours in a day rather than 24. But seriously, time is ver y impor tant for me since I am always travelling. I value time – I have work and I have family. The key is to get the balance of time right. This is what I am constantly seeking.

Big Bang Unico Sapphire All Black
Classic Fusion Berluti
The All Black becomes completely transparent. Ten years after the launch of the All Black concept, and to mark the anniversary of this current “must-have” trend, Hublot is subverting the natural order. It uses transparency to foster a new narrative between the visible and invisible. The exterior of its Big Bang watch is now invisible, so that the construction and movement of the timepiece are now fully visible.
Berluti’s emblematic Venezia leather and its famous patina, partnered with Hublot’s innovation in watchmaking creates The Classic Fusion. Hublot and Berluti work as modern day alchemists to create a watch with character and soul. In celebration of the Parisian shoemaker’s 120th birthday in 2015 it adorned an array of straps and dials for The Classic Fusion model.

For all those who spent hours building and dismantling technical constructions, experimenting in the engineering world, the Big Bang MECA-10 offers itself as a transitional object. It took two years to develop and refine a new manufacture movement with on-board mechanics. Atypical architecture with Meccano-type design. Hublot has created a new manufacture movement. Entirely conceived and developed in house, the HUB1201 is a skeleton mechanical movement with manual winding and a 10-day power reserve. There are 223 components, straight and curved perforated metallic strips, crown gears, racks, plates, axes, and ratchet wheels.

Big Bang Tutti Frutti Linen
Big Bang Unico Italia Independent
After lace and denim, it’s time to place linen centre stage. This natural plant fibre is not only used for the strap, it also adorns the case and dial of the new Big Bang Tutti Frutti Linen collection. Light yet strong, it is anethical and sustainable symbol of elegance. Hublot is not only using this fibre in its original role as a fabric, but also to create an alternative to carbon fibre for its watch cases.
When two hubs of innovation fuse materials and style, the end result is a truly rebellious timepiece. The camouflage pattern, fused with the structure of the TexaliumÂŽ, is given a more stylised reinterpretation. Creative entrepreneur and style icon, Italia Independent Co-Founder and Chairman Lapo Elkann sets free his talent combining genres, exhibiting the greatest taste while always being at the cutting edge of fashion.

Big Bang Unico Sapphire Once again, Hublot is adding its innovation and expertise with materials to the history of watchmaking firsts. By transforming the ‘savoir-faire,’ Hublot has developed the manufacturing ofunique and very hard materials, such as Magic Gold, the world’s only scratch-resistant gold. Now in 2016, Hublot has created 500 Big Bang Unico Sapphire models cut straight from sapphire, without losing sapphire’s unique and rare character. Sapphire—an extremely difficult material to machine—has until now been reserved for one-of-a-kind pieces or very private collections. After its ambitious MP05 “LaFerrari” Sapphire project, Hublot is capitalising on the challenge that it has just met and asserting its expertise in sapphire cutting by interpreting itin a series of 500 pieces.

Omega A history as timekeeper
T
hroughout our history as Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games, OMEGA has helped to capture some of the most remarkable sporting moments. With victory coming down to milliseconds, it has been their passion and duty to play a part in this illustrious event. As the Olympic Games have evolved over time, and athletes have become faster and stronger, OMEGA’s own excellence in timekeeping has also continued to grow.
THE LUXE WATCHES
Looking at the Olympic Games today, it is clear to see that OMEGA’s timekeeping has evolved to become a highlysophisticated system that leaves no result in doubt. In London in 2012, OMEGA introduced three new pieces of “futuristic” equipment including new starting blocks used by sprinters and short-distance runners; the innovative Swimming Show that instantly ranks the top three finishers in the pool; and the high-precision Quantum Timer used in athletics and water sports that has an enhanced resolution of one millionth of a second. Added to this, there are even more devices now being used such as the laser and sound “starting pistol” with its bright red colour, and the OMEGA Scan’O’Vision MYRIA that captures 10,000 frames per second in a photofinish. Over 84 years, our reputation has been cemented by dedication and passion. For the athletes who compete at Rio 2016, every result is now in very safe and experienced hands. On 26 occasions since 1932, OMEGA has fulfilled the prestigious role of Official Timekeeper at the Olympic Games. Under their watchful eye, records have been set and broken, history has been witnessed and legends have been made. No matter the year, the Olympic Games have always delivered a multitude of great moments in time. Now, as the world’s attention turns to Rio de Janeiro, the brand will assume its duties for the 27th time. Surrounded by the colour and culture of this vibrant city, we will work with the enduring commitment and passion that has sealed our unrivalled reputation.
For an edition of the Olympic Games today, OMEGA sends around 480 tonnes of equipment, miles and miles of cabling and 450 timekeepers. This massive undertaking shows the effort that our brand is willing to exude in order to serve the dedicated athletes who are competing on one of the biggest stages of their lives. Of course, it is not just these few weeks in which OMEGA gives focus. Throughout our history as Official Timekeeper, we have also been a leading force in researching, developing and mastering the technologies that record every second. In the pool, they have developed many systems that make victory indisputable. These include the famous touchpads positioned at both ends of the swimming pool, allowing athletes to stop time with their own hands. Out on the track, OMEGA has been responsible for the creation of the most famous devices used in precision sports timing, among them the Scan’O’Vision MYRIA photofinish cameras, starting blocks, false-start detection technology and highspeed video systems. These Olympic Games in Brazil promise to be like no other. It is the first time that South America has hosted the largest and most famous multi-sport event in the world and, like everybody, the brand is expecting an unforgettable occasion. For OMEGA, there is also a true sense of pride. We know that whoever stands on the podiums in these Olympic Games will do so with the most precise knowledge of their medal-winning performance.
40 41
The Evolution Of Omega Timekeeping As athletes become faster and stronger, OMEGA has also advanced its own strengths and abilities in the world of Olympic Games timekeeping. Three technologies in particular have seen a great evolution that proves just how far we’ve come. New Timekeeping Technologies At The Rio 2016 Olympic Games • Omega Scan’O’Vision Myria Perhaps the most widely known sports timekeeping device used in athletics is the photofinish camera, the equipment set up at the finish line of sprints, hurdles and other races. Each runner’s image is captured by this device as he or she crosses the finish line and it is this information that the judges use to officially determine the champion of each race. The new OMEGA Scan’O’Vision MYRIA is a combination of a time detector and a chronograph. Its photofinish images are produced using a high-tech image-capture device that records up to 10,000 digital images of one vertical line per second. Improved light sensitivity means that images are of higher quality than with previous versions of the photofinish camera and thanks to its compact size; it takes less time to assemble and disassemble. • New Omega Photocell Technology Photocells have been an important part of “stopping time” since 1948. They are used to give an instant result at finishlines and give racers and spectators a precise understanding of the winner’s recorded time. In most recent competitions, two pairs of photo¬cells have emitted beams of light across the finish line that halt time as soon as a competitor crosses. Today, OMEGA proudly introduces the next generation of this vital equipment. Instead of two photocells, there are now four, all integrated into one unit, and positioned on the finish line of the Athletics events. With four photocells in operation, more body patterns are able to be detected as they cross the line, and it will no longer be necessary to move the height of the
cells for hurdle races. This means even more accuracy at the moment that matters. • New and improved scoreboards The hi-resolution scoreboards that will be used in Rio de Janeiro have been re-designed and are operated by new software that enables them to display not only text and live information, but also animations, athlete pictures and visual imagery. Using modern effects, winners’ names, results and their nation’s flag can be boldly displayed, adding to the drama, thrill and excitement of each event. Not only is there consistency across all events, but the big moments such as records and medal winning performances will be highlighted like never before. A lot of time has been spent testing with different distances and contrasts to ensure visibility is at the highest level possible. It’s a great advancement from the amber and black displays used in the past. • False start detection system The starting blocks in Athletics have been enhanced with builtin sensors that measure an athletes’ force against the footrest 4,000 times per second. The detection system instantly sends the force measurements to an on-site computer and creates a “force curve” so that the starter can visually analyse the reaction in the event of a false start. This is all possible because of new software and enhanced communication technology between the starting blocks and the false start detection system. • Golf scoreboards As golf makes its return to the Olympic Games after more than a century, OMEGA is introducing a new scoreboard especially for the event. Placed at ground level on four dedicated tees, the scoreboards will be equipped with radar measurement systems. As a player tees off, information will be captured and then displayed to spectators so that they can closely follow the action. Along with the player’s name and current score, the scoreboard will show a live output of the stroke speed, estimated distance and height of the stroke.
• Archery targeting system For the first time at the Olympic Games, technology will be used to record scores in archery events. Until now, the judging has been done solely by the human eye using a specialised scope. Now, OMEGA introduces a new target with a built-in scanning system. When the arrow hits the target, two scanners run lengthways and widthways to calculate the arrow’s distance from the centre point. The system has a 0.2mm accuracy which is impossible for the human eye to detect. It’s also fast, delivering results within 1 second from the moment the target is hit. Special Editions • Seamaster Diver 300m “Rio 2016” Limited Edition Rio de Janeiro is a city full of life. It is the first place in South America to host the Olympic Games and the perfect location for athletes and spectators alike. Inspired by this dynamic spirit, OMEGA has created the Seamaster Diver 300M “Rio 2016” Limited Edition. The timepiece is a combination of watchmaking expertise and unique craftsmanship. Beginning on the city’s famous beaches, we have taken the wave pattern from the mosaic design on Copacabana’s sidewalks and used it as inspiration for a similar style on the watch’s lacquered black dial. The uni-directional rotating diving bezel is also black, this time made from black polished ceramic. However, what truly sets this feature apart is the lacquered numbers in red, green, yellow and blue. These represent the exuberance of Rio as well as the five colours of the famous Olympic rings. Of course, the event itself has been commemorated in exquisite fashion. On the reverse side of the polished and brushed stainless steel case, the screw-in caseback has been stamped with the “Rio 2016” logo and engraved with an individual Limited Edition number. Only 3016 of these pieces have been produced. Other features of this timepiece are typical of the iconic OMEGA Seamaster 300M style. These include a date window
at 3 o’clock, a helium escape valve at 10 o’clock, and polished facetted skeleton rhodium-plated hands coated in white SuperLumiNova. Presented on a stainless steel bracelet, the timepiece is driven by the exclusive OMEGA calibre 2500 and is water resistant up to 30 bar (300 metres / 1000 feet). • Seamaster Bullhead “Rio 2016” Limited Edition As part of OMEGA’s Olympic Games Collection, the Bullhead Rio is a unique celebration of heritage, precision and sporting excellence. At first sight, it is instantly recognisable for its individual style and design. The blue leather strap links directly to the Rio 2016™ logo, and features subtle stitching along each side, coloured yellow, green, red and black to represent the iconic Olympic rings. This colour theme is continued on the rotating inner-bezel, serving as a meaningful reminder of the unity and harmony that the Olympic rings signify. The case itself has a true link to history and sport. This particular style was first released in 1969, and was used by rally drivers to time their laps. It’s highly appropriate then, that the spirit of speed has now evolved to exemplify OMEGA’s continuing association as the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games. Like its predecessors, the Bullhead “Rio” also features a white dial, as well as a central chronograph seconds hand, and a 30-minute recorder at 12H. It’s interesting to point out, that the name “bullhead” was originally a nickname, coined by watch collectors who admired the shape of the timepiece, and concluded that it indeed looked like the head of a bull. There is no doubt that the qualities of strength and determination will be on show this year. Built with OMEGA’s exclusive Co-Axial calibre 3113, and stamped with the Rio 2016™ logo on the caseback, this is sure to become an instant collector’s item. Before the first race is run, the winning standard in watch-making has already been set.

Freakwing from Ulysse Nardin
A
s partner to the Artemis Racing team in the America’s Cup, Ulysse Nardin is flying the team’s colors high with the new FreakWing, which is packed with innovations and cutting-edge technology just like the famous high-tech AC45 catamaran of the Swedish challenger.
The jewel of the sea has finally been encapsulated in the form of a watch ! To celebrate its partnership with the Artemis Racing team for the 35th America’s Cup, Ulysse Nardin has adorned its new FreakWing with the most emblematic features of this high-tech catamaran: the upper bridge for the minutes is inspired by the internal structure of the rigid sail, while the texture of the rotating hours disc evokes the mesh net of the multihull. The bezel and case back are forged from carbon fiber, an element that is omnipresent in high-level sailing. And so, fly-ing the colors of the Swedish challenger, the FreakWing is a hymn to excellence, to innovation, to technology and to precision - values which are shared by both brands. The Artemis Racing AC45 catamaran, the challenger of the Swedish Royal Yacht Club – the 5th oldest sailing club in the world – is designed like no other: its rigid sail in the shape of an aeroplane wing and foils allow it to achieve phenomenal performances; reaching up to 45 knots – more than 80 km/h. Ulysse Nardin’s Freak collection follows the same philosophy. For fifteen years, it has produced the most audacious innovations and the most daring architecture. This watch was the first to integrate a silicium escapement in 2001, a diamond version in 2005 and the Dual Ulysse escapement in the same year. Without a dial or hands, it is made in such a manner as to pivot its movement on itself. Linked to the center of this unusual vessel, the lower bridge indicates the time, while the upper bridge –which carries the gear train, the paired balance spring and the escapement in silicium, exclusive to the Dual Ulysse escapement– displays the minutes.
As spectacular as always with its Tourbillon in the center, riding high with the Artemis Racing logo on the back, the new FreakWing offers a highly readable hour and minute display, as well as the date at four o’clock. On the technology side, it features the UlyChoc safety system, a new generation of shock absorbers. Entirely conceived, developed and produced in-house, it replaces three traditional micro-elements with just one made from silicium. This is a true world-first, and is the subject of a patent application. This solution avoids any slack or friction, allowing for perfect re-centering of the balance wheel in the event of an impact. Sturdier than ever, with a black DLC titanium case and a carbon-style strap with yellow stitching, the FreakWing is also phenomenal to use. In the absence of a crown, it is the upper and lower bezels, integrated into the movement, which perform the various functions: the first, secured by a safety clip between the lugs at 6 o’clock, can be used to set the hours and minutes when rotated clockwise, and to set the date when rotated anti-clockwise; the second, on the case back, is to wind the mainspring barrel – designed for a power reserve of eight days. The America’s Cup, which is the oldest international sporting competition (1851), even before the first modern Olympic Games (1896), will take place in June 2017. Until then, like two master mariners, each having mastered the ropes of their respective disciplines, Artemis Racing and Ulysse Nardin can count on each other giving the very best of themselves.

Roger Dubuis’ Excalibur Spider Charismatic variations on an inspirational theme
F
or the many watch lovers who have become keen fans of the Excalibur Spider collection since its launch in 2015, Manufacture Roger Dubuis introduces two dynamic new interpretations of a horological success story drawing upon multiple sources of inspiration.
Acknowledged as the pioneer of contemporary skeleton calibres, as well as a specialist in architectural and technical mechanics, Roger Dubuis proudly showcases both these claims to fame in distinctively colourful new versions of the Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon – a standout model epitomizing a recent and entirely novel take on its iconic Excalibur collection. Stellar skeleton-work sophistication meets arachnid-inspired intricacy Skeleton-work motifs, with their geometrical complexity and powerful symbolism, are a recurrent theme in nature that is picked up in the watchmaking world by paring down components to essentials while maintaining their functionality and enhancing their aesthetic appeal. The Roger Dubuis Astral Skeleton approach is based on an exclusive multi-level, star-shaped construction reminiscent of modern cityscapes, while enhancing the clarity of the dials through its star tips pointing directly to hour-markers. The extreme maturity achieved by the Manufacture in this field has enabled it to drive this expertise beyond the movement alone and apply it to whole new areas of the watch: the case, flange and hands. The resulting Spider collection is a decidedly contemporary interpretation of horological traditions. Commenting on this choice of name, Product Strategy Director Gregory Bruttin highlights the parallels between the Manufacture and “the patient, meticulous and inventive nature of the work done by this resourceful arachnid as it daily spins its web in ever more novel and intricate patterns, reinventing its craft and constantly adapting it to new situations”. By promoting transparency, visibility and sculptural effects, the Spider principle offers an ideal expression of the superlative quality and high-end finishes implied by the Poinçon de Genève certification: a reliable guarantee of exclusivity, origin, expertise, performance and durability.
THE LUXE WATCHES
The unmistakable 3D aesthetic impact, combined with the inherent sophistication characterising these “Technical Skeletons”, is thus reinforced by the external skeletonworking that accentuates the distinctive movement architecture. The RD505SQ calibre powering the Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon models also features two other Roger Dubuis technical characteristics that have become easily recognisable signatures: the micro-rotor and the flying tourbillon with its carriage shaped like a Celtic cross. These fascinating creations are perfect embodiments of the Manufacture’s consistent ability to innovate and surprise. The legendary Excalibur sword adopts an even sharper, edgier look Inevitably conjuring up legendary visions of the bold and the brave, Excalibur radiates a dauntless charm that naturally also draws today’s urban Warriors. Its unmistakable suit of shining armour includes the round case, fluted bezel, triple lugs and Dauphine-type hands that devotees have come to know and love. This rugged exterior is viewed through the Spider prism and its holistic interpretation of the skeleton principle, contributing to a resolutely technical, outdoor and automobile-inspired spirit. The latter is enhanced by the use of titanium for the “container”, flange, screws and folding clasp, giving a pleasantly light and comfortable feel on the wrist. The speedometer-style ring surrounding the tourbillon and serving as a small seconds counter further contributes to the high-octane motorsports style, while ensuring seamless integration into the skeleton work and avoiding any visual overload. A typical Roger Dubuis blend of practicality and
iconoclastic aesthetics. Optimal legibility in any lighting conditions is ensured by the Superluminova enhancing the tips of the hands and the applied screws on the flange. Fiery red or true blue In these vivid and dynamic new 2016 interpretations, colourful red or blue DLC titanium accents on the skeleton flange, crown, small seconds counter and hand- tips complement the strong contrasts between silvertoned and black elements. The red model is teamed with a mean-looking black rubber strap, while the blue variation is fitted with an über-cool white rubber version. This approach is entirely in tune with the versatile and varied Rarities concept introduced by Roger Dubuis, providing clients with unlimited scope for creativity reflecting that of the Manufacture itself – and thereby guaranteeing the inherent rarity of every timepiece. Astral Skeleton complexity and functionality; arachnidan lightness and intricacy; Poinçon de Genève durability and performance: these sterling qualities are matched by the contemporary Warrior’s unique sense of honour and energized by vibrant touches of colour. Fascinatingly varied yet complementary influences converge and collide in these exhilarating new expressions of the Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon.

Roger Dubuis with the FFF Racing Team In it to win it
A
s the 2016 racing season gears up, ready to roar into action, Roger Dubuis lines up on the starting grid of GT championship racing in the world-class company of the FFF Racing Team recently created by the 31 year-old Chinese tycoon Fu Songyang.
Multiple parallels can be drawn between the world of motorsports and that of Roger Dubuis, including dedication to performance and precision, along with a determination to stay ahead of the pack. First and foremost, however, their natural affinities are based on a shared and relentless obsession with incredible mechanics, expressed through finely tuned engines and equally state-ofthe-art, meticulously honed movements. Moreover, this compelling enthusiasm for technical complexity is backed by an equally powerful penchant for sophisticated design conveyed through streamlined bodywork as well as in the sleek exteriors of Roger Dubuis timepieces. Much like the high-calibre Hong Kong-based FFF Racing Team that is dedicated to providing a “professional platform for the discerning driver to race alongside the elite in the most prestigious GT racing arenas in Europe and Asia, the Genevabased Maison shows an undeniable ability to compete with the best and attract connoisseurs of discerning taste. This specialist of architectural and technical mechanics is reputed for its innovative work in the realm of double flying tourbillons as well as contemporary skeleton calibres. Given its whole-hearted nature manifested in all its endeavours, Manufacture Roger Dubuis has opted to sign a partnership as primary sponsor of the FFF Racing Team. Composed of both professional and amateur drivers, FFF Racing competes in key GT events in a number of prestigious locations, and is known for offering fascinating immersion experiences reminiscent of those provided by Roger Dubuis for visitors to its Manufacture. This cooperation will encompass 15 races (see list below) across Europe and Asia, notably as part of the Le Mans Cup raced on such legendary tracks as Imola and Le Mans, as well as the GT Asia championship with events held in Korea, Japan and China. VVIP guests will enjoy behind-the-scenes access offering them a chance to immerse themselves in the racing universe: a dynamic, people-oriented approach entirely in tune with the Roger Dubuis flair for staging mechanics in aesthetically appealing ways making for memorable experiences. “Roger Dubuis and the FFF Racing Team share a fascination for – and indepth knowledge of – what we like to call haute mécanique, the high-octane mechanical equivalent of haute couture. This partnership embodies our intrinsic values and priorities as a specialist of architectural and technical mechanics.” Jean-Marc Pontroué, CEO Roger Dubuis. A bespoke special edition To mark this auspicious cooperation, Roger Dubuis is issuing
an eight-piece limited edition of its already iconic Excalibur Quatuor, introduced in 2013 and whose affinities with the world of racing are vividly apparent. This stunning model features pink gold accents creating a warm and striking contrast with the charcoal rhodium-plated finishing as well as with the black DLC titanium case. This timepiece sporting the FFF logo at 12 o’clock clearly displays its revolutionary means of compensating for the earth’s gravity by means of four sprung balances together with five differentials. And talking about the kind of stats to which R&D teams in the automotive world can easily relate, the Excalibur Quatuor was the result of five years of research, 24 months of effective development, 21 watchmaking crafts and 40 people involved in the project. These bespoke timepieces entirely worthy of the legendary Excalibur collection will be presented during the Shanghai and Macau events and the inimitable Quatuor design will also be featured in selected areas.

100 Editions Of The Targa Florio
T
with Eberhard & Co. and A Special Edition Champion V
his year, from 5 - 8 May, another memorable event has been added to Eberhard & Co.’s rich programme of sponsorships in the world of vintage cars: the renowned Targa Florio, which has celebrated its 100th edition and at which the watchmaker has been the Official Timekeeper and presented a chronograph especially created for the competitors in this race. The bond between the Swiss watchmaker, which has been producing high-quality timepieces since 1887 and which has been one of the major players on the old-timers’ scene for over 20 years, and exclusive cars goes back to 1992. It is a love that has endured over time and that is constantly being enriched by innovations such as this latest addition to the fold and the decision to create a special model dedicated to the racing enthusiasts lucky enough to have the honour of taking part in this edition.
Set up in 1906 through the enlightened genius and entrepreneurial spirit of Vincenzo Florio - a highly cultured man enamoured of his native land - the “world’s oldest and most famous” automobile race, an icon of Italy and of Sicily in particular, which has left its mark on the history of motor sports, looked proudly towards the future through a four-in-one event: Targa Florio Rally, Targa Florio Historic Rally, Targa Florio Classica and Targa Florio Historic Speed.
Eberhard & Co. has come up with the Champion V Targa Florio watch to celebrate the race’s Centenary. Being a sports chronograph, it is ideal for all those who face the trials of life and their passions with pluck and determination. It has been given to all participants (1 per crew) and all competitors had the chance to purchase a second watch at a special price. Elegant, sophisticated and sporty, Champion V is a mechanical, selfwinding chronograph with two counters, one for the minutes and one for the hours, where style and technology merge in a highly versatile equilibrium. The dial of the special edition Targa Florio is customised with the logo of the 100th edition and its style and colours are evocative of motor races. Waterproof at 50 m, it has a 42.80 mm steel caseback with convex sapphire glass, a caseback fixed with 6 screws and enhanced by polished satin finishes, a steel bezel with a circular aluminium insert that has been treated with anodic oxidation and it comes with a leather strap with a customised “E&Co.” buckle.
It has been set to be the motor racing event of the year, bringing together extremely valuable cars, great champions, crews from the four corners of the world, collectors and enthusiasts. The history of this discipline came to life again in the very places where it was born, passing on a culture which, besides being all-Italian, is part of our global heritage. The cars and the streets which saw the feats of great drivers such as Fangio, Varzi, Nuvolari, Merzario and Vaccarella featured once again prominently in the event.

Drive de Cartier For connoisseurs
I
nstinct, independence, elegance, these are the qualities of the Drive man; an attitude and a mindset that are not just about existing, but about knowing how to live. This is a man who cannot be categorised, who seems natural on first impressions, but is more sophisticated than he initially appears. His true talent is an aptitude for style and freedom. He appreciates the good things in life for himself and the pleasure they bring him. His watch is worn as a reflection of the man, rather than for status, the same applies to his passions which he steers, as he would his car, appreciating the beauty of the skills involved. People say he’s a connoisseur, sensitive to the precision of a fold, an exact shade of patina or a meticulously turned cuff or lapel. These are the details that make the difference for him. Was it the balance between the dimensions of the case and the taut linear design that initially caught his eye in the Drive de Cartier watch? Certainly the mark of this stylish timepiece’s character is cultivated in its cushion-shaped case. The Drive de Cartier watch is the watch of a man of passion and continues the long standing tradition of Cartier watches with distinctive shapes. The Drive de Cartier Collection Over and above a strongly defined character, the aesthetic emphasis of the Drive de Cartier watch changes with each different model. Its case, in pink gold or steel, is fitted with a black, grey or white guilloché dial marked by Roman numerals punctuated with sword-shaped hands. The transparent case-back reveals the Manufacture movement 1904 MC, available in two versions: hours, minutes, small seconds and date for the 1904-PS MC; and second time zone, day/night indicator, large date and small seconds for the 1904-FU MC. The Drive de Cartier watch is also available in a Fine Watchmaking version, with a flying tourbillon 9452 MC, certified “Poinçon de Genève”.

THE LUXE WATCHES
With the patterning of the guilloché dial resembling the design of a radiator grill, the domed crystal, counter at 6 o’clock and the winding crown shaped like a bolt, the motor car is an indisputable presence. This is an allusion that Cartier has diverted and enhanced, reinterpreting the distinction of its streamlined forms. The finishes seem designed to meet the exacting standards of the connoisseur: textured satin at the sides with polished surfaces for the top and bottom. The former is intended to magnify the volume, the latter to hone it. The mechanics of a style Three calibres power the Drive de Cartier watch: the 1904PS MC, the 1904-FU MC for the small complication, and the 9452 MC for the Fine Watchmaking version. All three are produced at the Cartier Manufacture. The calibre 1904 MC, created in 2010, was among the first movements conceived, developed and assembled by the Cartier Manufacture. The care lavished on calibre 1904 MC, with refined finishes such as the Côtes de Genève decoration on the bridges and the oscillating weight, or the polished screw-heads, attests to the high standards of quality to
which Cartier holds its movements. This 11 ½ line calibre has been designed to maintain perfect chronometric stability, harnessing a double barrel system to ensure consistency of the mainspring torque over a long period. Fitted with a fine regulating system, the calibre was conceived for the Manufacture to perfectly adjust its chronometry and guarantee that it runs with great precision. The calibre 1904-FU MC, created in 2014, combines a retrograde second time zone display, a day/night indicator, a large date and small seconds, with the complications coordinated directly by the crown. This movement equips the small complication model of the Drive de Cartier watch. Finally, the Drive de Cartier Flying Tourbillon watch, a Fine Watchmaking timepiece fitted with the mechanical movement with manual winding, calibre 9452 MC. Certified “Poinçon de Genève”, this watch is assembled and set in the Cartier Fine Watchmaking “Poinçon de Genève” workshops, situated on the first floor of the Cartier Boutique at 35, Rue du Rhône in the heart of Geneva. What has been achieved here is a watch created in accordance with the most prestigious of all watchmaking certifications, testifying to Cartier’s excellence in Fine Watchmaking.

Carbon Fibre Extreme Oris Williams Chronograph
B
Oris has announced one of the most innovative, technically advanced watches in the company’s history – the Oris Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme. It is made using an Orispatented manufacturing technique never before seen in watchmaking.
The watch’s case is made of carbon fibre and titanium, but not just any carbon fibre. Oris has developed and patented a carbon fibre manufacturing technique derived from processes used by Oris’s long-standing Formula 1 partner Williams and never before seen in watchmaking. Oris’s technique has been designed to exploit the full potential of carbon fibre, and it delivers three key benefits. The first two are rigidity and water-tightness. In most carbon fibre watches, these can only be achieved by adding in extra components such as metal reinforcements or a metal ‘containers’, but Oris’s solution bypasses the need for these. The third is in postproduction. Processing carbon fibre after it has been moulded and hardened is labour-intensive and costly, but the Oris technique overcomes this. To make this unique, high-performance carbon fibre composite, sheets of woven carbon fibre reinforced polymer are layered manually in individual moulds in two steps and then twice hardened under five bar of pressure at 130°C in special ovens. The use of fibre waves rather than shreds ensures the material is solid, with no hollow spaces. Each watch-case middle part is individually made by hand. The process is so sophisticated that it delivers a completed case shape and finished surface. The titanium case back and sapphire crystal can be mounted straight onto it, without further machining, special gaskets or ‘containers’. In fact, the only additional processes required are to mill off any redundant material, and to mill the holes for the crown, chronograph pushers and the bracelet.
THE LUXE WATCHES
Oris has developed this material using knowledge shared with the Williams Formula 1 team, with whom it first partnered in 2003. Carbon fibre polymers are used wherever a high strengthto-weight ratio is required, as in a racing car’s monocoque or steering wheel. It is five times lighter and twice as stable as stainless steel. Oris has used it in the middle part of the Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme multi-piece case. The part weighs just 7.2 grams.
Completing the Oris Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme case are polished, black-DLC-coated titanium elements, including the bezel, crown, push buttons and screwdown case back. The watch is fuelled by Oris Calibre 674, a modified version of ETA’s ultra-reliable 7750 calibre. This gives it three counters, one for small seconds, and hour and minute chronograph counters. Williams blue on the chronograph hands and counters completes the watch’s sporty design language.

Rado’s three lightweight minimalist masterpieces
L
The True Thinline in marvellous monochrome
ess is more: Swiss watchmaker Rado is breathing new life into the old adage with the addition of three minimalist masterpieces to its collection. In a world weighed down by visual clutter and manic multitasking, this super slim, toned down trio delights with its utter simplicity. Styled with an uncompromising “back to basics” approach, these three new additions to the True Thinline family have been stripped to their barest essentials. Each piece is crafted in a monochrome colour palette – pure white, stark black or lustruous plasma – using Rado’s signature material, high-tech ceramic. Free of indexes, subdials and flourishes, the True Thinline’s dial is a beautiful blank slate – even the second hand has been done away with. The timepiece’s sober, restrained lines and incredibly slim profile make a fresh and modern impact – a new way to make a fashion understatement. With a case that measures just 4.9 mm, the True Thinline is the thinnest ceramic watch that Rado has ever produced. These new True Thinlines have taken this minimalism a step further, embracing not only a minimal size but also a minimal aesthetic. The result is a design that transcends fashion trends, a deliberately pared down shape that reveals the poetry of a watch in its most basic form. Afloat on the wrist Hailed as a marvel of engineering when it first arrived on the watchmaking scene, the True Thinline’s elegant simplicity is powered by an unbelievably thin movement of just 1 millimeter. The Thinline owes its extreme lightness and super slender silhouette to its monobloc ceramic case – a groundbreaking type of case construction featuring solid ceramic with no need for a stainless steel core. Despite their light weight and airy aesthetic, this True Thinline trio still boasts the same durability and scratch resistance as Rado’s other high-tech ceramic models. Rado’s signature material, high-tech ceramic achieves an impressive union of lightness and hardness. It is 25% lighter than steel while being nearly five times harder, making it one of the lightest and most durable materials used in luxury watchmaking. With its light weight, breezy shape and atmospheric design, the True Thinline appears as though it is afloat on the wrist. Luxury, lightness and minimalism combine to striking effect in these latest standout pieces from Rado.

Louis Moinet Black Gold Derrick
A
telier Louis Moinet unveils a spectacular new-look Derrick Tourbillon, a timepiece designed to revolutionise the world of watchmaking while doffing the hat to the world of oil. The Black Gold Derrick proudly shows off openwork mechanical parts of the movement and the new version further enhances the technology involved in its extraordinary mechanism. This spectacular salute to the business of black gold, boasts a skeleton movement, haute horlogerie finishings, a three-day power reserve, and an all-new seconds display. The Black Gold Derrick picks up the watchmaking tale where Louis Moinet left off three years ago with the Derrick Tourbillon. Black gold watchmaking The original spirit of the piece, redolent of the world of oil, remains intact. The watch’s entire movement represents the drilling process. A drive shaft sits on the right of the dial, between 2 and 4 o’clock. Thispowers a long articulated arm, known as the walking beam, between 10 and 2 o’clock. At its left-hand end is the oblong-shaped ‘head’, the most striking visual characteristic of a derrick. The circuit naturally ends with a barrel at 9 o’clock, made from titanium and symbolising successful extraction. It too is in constant rotation: Louis Moinet has dedicated it to marking the seconds, read off at the bottom of the barrel, on a red engraved seconds track. The rotating barrel is also engraved with Louis Moinet’s name, atop its iconic fleur-de-lis motif. Exclusive developments Echoing the black gold depicted as running through the watch, the bridges are made from black PVD. Created exclusively for the Black Gold Derrick, they are open-worked, so as to give pride of place to the visual effect of the going train. The plate is also completely new, as is the barrel cover. This now offers a view from above of the spring, whilst raised engraving on the minimalist-style cover proudly displays the 72-hour power reserve. Watchmaking ethos The Black Gold Derrick is imbued with the spirit of fine watchmaking. The time is displayed by two central rhodiumplated hands, regulated by a tourbillon escapement at 6 o’clock. The bridges and their many acute angles are all hand-finished, featuring pearled decor on the plate and the derrick bridge, and fine lines on the other bridges.
The assembly is housed in a new white gold case by Louis Moinet, dubbed NEO. Premiered worldwide at Baselworld, it embodies a noteworthy step by the Ateliers towards a more dynamic, contemporary style. The NEO case’s original, contemporary design includes open-work lugs; in a fine watchmaking flourish, these sport black zircontips. In addition to open-work lugs, the sides have beensculpted, and the crown has also been modernised. This technical assembly, with over 45 parts, is topped by asix-screw bezel, now one of Louis Moinet’s stylistic hallmarks. The Black Gold Derrick comes in a strictly limited edition of 28 pieces.

Classically Evolved Porsche 911 Carrera
S
ome things become classics on their very first day. Somehow, one knows when something is just right. It was ever thus with architecture, and in modern times became so with automobiles. That’s not to say they can’t be improved. Taking a fresh look at old classics is a gift for today’s generation of architects and auto engineers. Achieved in Kuwait with a 21st century take on Dar Hamad; and in Stuttgart on the 911 Carrera.
THE LUXE CARS
The designer’s challenge is to make their project relevant to today. It’s not about reinventing – the key to the enduring success of the 911 is that it has remained true, in essence, to Ferdinand Porsche’s original ethos - it’s about incorporating today’s technology and standards into yesterday’s successes. The 911 Carrera is the brand icon of Porsche. Powered by bi-turbo engines for the first time, it sets new benchmarks in performance and efficiency. The further developed chassis – with standard active damping (PASM) and a ten millimetre lower ride height – delivers an even broader spread of characteristics between sporty and comfortable. Inside, the new standard Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system with multi-touch display offers a considerably expanded range of functions and greatly simplified operation. The 911 Carrera has been one of the world’s best-selling sports cars for decades. Now the new generation has arrived to further extend this lead. The new 911 is exceedingly well equipped to do this with innovative turbocharged flat engines, an advanced chassis that offers an even greater spread between performance and comfort and a new infotainment system.

n invitation from McLaren to test drive one of their fine motorcars is an occasion to savour. When that drive is going to take us from Ras Al Khaimah’s Waldorf Astoria hotel, to Jebel Jais in the Hajjar Mountains, we know it’s going to be a memorable drive and an opportunity the let the 570S stretch its legs.
THE LUXE CARS
The McLaren Sports Series is the third and final product family to join the recently announced three tier model range from McLaren Automotive. A pure McLaren from the ground up, the Sports Series launches in coupé bodystyle with two models – the first, and most powerful, is the 570S Coupé, which will be joined by the more accessible 540C Coupé from Q2 in 2016. These models complete the range alongside the Ultimate Series, comprising the McLaren P1™ and McLaren P1™ GTR, and the Super Series, which is the core McLaren range featuring the 650S, available as a Coupé and Spider, and the 675LT. The Sports Series introduces the unique McLaren DNA to the sports car market. Each model has been designed and engineered by a team of experts at the iconic McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) alongside the Formula 1™ team operations, and every car is hand built in the state-of-the-art McLaren Production Centre (MPC) alongside the current range. As with every McLaren model designed for road or track since 1981, the Sports Series range is built around a lightweight carbon fibre chassis. High performance and high efficiency is also delivered through a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged V8 engine. With no compromises, the Sports Series is the perfect entry point into the world of McLaren. The Drive The Sports Series offers unrivalled performance and driving exhilaration in the sports car class. It is the only car in its sector to offer all the credentials typically found in the top-tier supercars: lightweight carbon fibre chassis construction, midengine rear wheel drive configuration. Overall performance for the 570S Coupé is class-leading with the 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint taking 3.2 seconds, while 200 km/h is reached in just 9.5 seconds. Top speed is 328 km/h (204 mph). A dry weight of 1,313kg (2,895lbs) is around 140kg (309lbs) lighter than the nearest rival. This low weight ensures optimised handling, agility and makes the Sports Series even more responsive. Steering The steering in the Sports Series has been designed with refinement and feel as the key parameters. A fast steering rack ratio allows quick changes of direction and improves ease of control when driving at the limit – pivotal to a great sports car. As with the models in the Super Series and Ultimate Series ranges, the system used for the Sports Series is electrohydraulic ensuring a natural feel that cannot be replicated with a fully electric setup. The electro-hydraulic pump also powers the optional front lift system – which allows the ride height to be increased by 40mm at speeds of up to 60km/h (37mph). A one touch short-
cut to raise the vehicle is available through the steering wheelmounted menu stalk. Tyres developed with Pirelli As with the all models in the McLaren range, the tyres for the Sports Series have been tested continuously throughout the development programme specifically in conjunction with technical partners Pirelli. The design brief was focused on balance and agility, with a view to create a tyre with progressive levels of grip allowing the driver to explore the limits of the car with total confidence. “Being the only contact with the road, the tyre is critical to how the car handles and behaves, and McLaren treat them in the same way as any key suspension component. They are specially tuned and developed with Pirelli, and that makes a huge difference to the dynamics of this car.” The 570S Coupé is fitted with performance-focused Pirelli P Zero™ Corsa tyres as standard, while a Pirelli P Zero™ is available as a no-cost option. Tyre sizes are 225/35/R19 on the front and 285/35/R20 on the rear. The P Zero™ Corsa tyres have been developed with stiffer sidewalls and treads, offering outstanding grip levels, and yield advantages on a circuit and in standing-start acceleration. The P Zero™ option provides optimum performance levels in extreme wet and cold conditions. Braking system The 570S Coupé is equipped as standard with carbon ceramic discs (front: 394mm x 36mm / rear: 380mm x 34mm), with sixpiston callipers on the front and four-piston callipers at the rear. Newly developed ABS software is also present, and bespoke to the Sports Series, which has been designed to optimise brake feel. This new system also reduces pulsing through the pedal. A new ESC (Electronic Stability Control) system, developed with Bosch, includes a new ‘Dynamic’ mode which provides reduced intervention, to allow greater vehicle control on the limit and ‘driftability’. The ESC system for the first time includes a dedicated control switch, allowing ESC control independently to the handling control dial. This allows the choice of full, dynamic or ESC-off when in Sport and Track handling modes. With an improved pump and dual valve system, the ESC system is refined and provides greater resolution and thus more progressive control. Also new to the Sports Series is a new Performance Traction Control, which incorporates bespoke McLaren software to deliver more precise control in extreme situations. In Dynamic mode, the traction control allows a gradual transition at the point of slip (YAW angle) and therefore more confidence to explore the Sports Series at the limits of its handling.

THE LUXE CARS
The McLaren Sports Series features a number of Formula 1™-derived technologies, including the Brake Steer system. Initially developed by McLaren during the 1997 season, and subsequently banned due to the significant performance advantage offered, the system aids cornering by bringing the vehicle’s nose into the apex by applying braking force to the inside rear wheel. This enables the driver to brake later and get on the power earlier. Suspension The Sports Series is fitted with a newly-developed suspension system ensuring enhanced levels of driver engagement and refinement on both road and track. The system uses independent adaptive dampers with front and rear anti-rollbars – distinct from the Super Series and Ultimate Series – and Formula 1™-style dual wishbones. Adaptive dampers offer control over bump and rebound settings using the familiar McLaren ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ handling settings, with the 570S Coupé having bespoke damper settings to other McLaren models to date. In ‘Normal’ mode, the system provides a refined yet engaging ride, while the ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ settings allow the 570S Coupé to become more track-focused when required. Twin damper valves give precise control, while dual wishbone suspension provides optimum suspension travel and geometry.
“For a sports car, it is more about the grip balance and the response of the tyres and the response of the steering. The Sports Series has narrower tyres than the models in the Super or Ultimate Series, and the car still has high enough objective performance, but it is also about the subjective feel. It is hard to measure subjective performance, but how big the smile on the drivers face is when he goes round a corner is always a good measure. McLaren have used the suspension geometry and set-up to create a balance that makes the car really want to turn in to a corner. It feels like all you have to do is look at the apex of the corner and the car is sucked into it.” Powertrain • 3.8-litre twin turbo V8, with 30 percent of components bespoke to the new model, produces 570PS (562bhp) and 600Nm (443 lb ft) • Stop-start system fitted for the first time on a McLaren offers greater efficiency during city driving, improving fuel consumption and CO2 output • Optimised gearchanges through seven-speed seamless-shift gearbox (SSG) with ‘Cylinder Cut’ technology The Sports Series features an evolution of the 3.8-litre V8 twin turbo engine, named M838TE, with 30 percent of components bespoke to the new model. mid-engine rear-wheel drive supercar configuration optimises handling and agility – except that it competes in the sports car, not the supercar, market – delivering power through a seven-speed seamless shift gearbox (SSG). Despite being one of the world’s most powerful road car engines, it is also extremely efficient. A new stop-start system seen for the first time at McLaren provides greater efficiency during city driving, improving fuel consumption and CO2 output. The 570S Coupé returns 26.6 mpg (10.7 litres/100km) on the EU combined cycle with an improved range, while emissions are just 249g/km. Other improvements to the efficiency of the powertrain include new 60-degree camshaft phase controllers that reduce internal engine inertia and provide greater control, both benefitting CO2 figures and engine response. The vacuum system has also been deleted from the engine which saves 2.5kg and reduces complexity. Sharing technology with the Super Series, the M838TE engine includes Formula 1™ technology such as dry sump lubrication – to enable higher cornering speeds without oil surge – and a
flat-plane crankshaft, to allow the engine to be sited as low as possible to improve the centre of gravity and both handling and agility. ExxonMobil ensures each groundbreaking McLaren model benefits from the highest levels of technical commitment and expertise. The Sports Series joins the Super Series and Ultimate Series in being factory-filled with New Life™ 0W-40 developed by McLaren Automotive technology partner Mobil 1. The high technology engine lubricant has an optimum combination of synthetic base oils designed to meet the high performance engine demands. The advanced formula contains additives specially developed to better protect the engine by preventing build-up on critical engine parts, allowing McLaren engines to run like new after thousands of miles, even in the harshest driving conditions. The Sports Series is fitted with new equal length exhaust manifolds produced from cast stainless steel mounting sections mated to stainless steel hydroformed tubes. These optimise exhaust flow and provide a performance advantage in terms of consistent, uniform back pressure, while also delivering a new, distinctive crisp exhaust note.

British GT Championship For over 20 years the British GT Championship has been an intrinsic part of the UK’s national motorsport fabric. But, having undergone a number of changes throughout those two decades, it is difficult to envisage an era more competitive than the current GT3/4 format. A 33-strong full-season grid comprising 11 different manufacturers will take in the majority of this season’s rounds. Championship organisers expect more entries to materialise throughout the year, while Silverstone and Spa look set to welcome more than 50 cars thanks to the Competition 102 GT4 European Series joining at both. First organised by the British Racing Drivers Club in 1993, the BRDC National Sports GT Challenge (as it was then known) featured grids of wildly different machinery loosely grouped into vibrant classes comprising sportscars and saloons. The term ‘British GT’ was first used in 1995 just as a new age of GT1 and GT2 cars was beginning to materialise. Indeed, the latter half of the 1990s would see some of the category’s most incredible and iconic cars, such as the McLaren F1 GTR,
Porsche 911 GT1, Lister Storm GTL and Jaguar XJ220C contest British GT in the hands of topline international racers and home-grown amateur talent. But a GT racing revolution was about to take place, and Britain would be at the forefront. With GT1 becoming an increasingly distant memory and GT2 proving too costly the championship sought a fresh direction. New, balanced GT3 regulations had proven popular in Europe under SRO’s guidance and when the organisation was appointed British GT promoter in 2005 the same cars made their way across the Channel. Indeed, since then British GT has re-established itself as the world’s foremost domestic GT series. GT4’s arrival and subsequent expansion currently sees two classes running on the same track at once, an important aspect of GT competition that enables a driver to prepare for international endurance racing, while the option to also field GTC entries remains a possibility. Traditional British sportscar manufacturers have always featured heavily in the series: Lotus, TVR, Marcos, Darrian, Lister and, more recently, Chevron, Ginetta, Aston Martin, McLaren and Bentley have underlined the championship’s unique British spirit.

Aston Martin DB3S headlines Bonhams Aston Martin auction
T
he expected star of the show at Bonhams Aston Martin auction was a 1953 Aston Martin DB3S, raced by Sir Stirling Moss, Tony Brooks, Peter Collins, Roy Salvadori and Reg Parnell. With an estimate of ÂŁ6-7 million, the ex-works race car attracted the attention of classic car collectors across the globe.
THE LUXE CARS
“Few cars that have appeared in film can also boast an association with so many great names from the heyday of British sports car racing, but this Aston Martin DB3S does just that,” said Tim Schofield, Bonhams UK Head Motoring. “Drivers who raced it include such legends as Peter Collins, Roy Salvadori, and Sir Stirling Moss, competing at world-class level in such gruelling races as the Mille Miglia, the Spa Grand Prix and the Nürburgring 1,000kms.”
Aston Martin President and CEO Dr. Andy Palmer said: “We are very proud of our heritage at Aston Martin so it is fascinating to hear about the histories of the cars that come up for sale at these auctions. Some of our cars have led extremely interesting lives.”
Since specialist auctioneer Bonhams first held an Aston Martin sale in 2000, the auction has become one of the highlights of the automotive calendar. As in previous years, Aston Martin Works in Newport Pagnell will host the auction.
Joining the 1953 Aston Martin DB3S, which is one of only 11 works cars built for the World Sportscar Championship, were an array of exciting lots. A 1962 Aston Martin DB4 Convertible with an estimate of £1.5-1.6 million is listed alongside a 1963 Aston Martin DB4 Series V Vantage Convertible; one of only five right-hand-drive examples. Other highlights included a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Convertible and a 1968 Aston Martin DB6 ‘Mark I’ Volante, which is one of the rarest of post-war Aston Martins.
Aston Martin Works is the historic home of the iconic sports car maker, a unique facility with a remarkable automotive heritage. An approved heritage service and restoration facility as well as a new car dealership it is possible to view, purchase, service and restore cars from every era of the marque’s 103-years.
Paul Spires, Commercial Director at Aston Martin Works said: “The Bonhams Aston Martin auction exceeds our expectations every year. It is a delight to see Aston Martins that have been lovingly cared for being sold to new and existing enthusiasts. Judging by the lots we are going to have another exceptional year.”

The BOSS Man New modern satorialism
B
OSS Menswear for Fall/Winter 2016 presents an artistic take on light and shadow. The juxtaposition of shiny and matte, textured and smooth, uses the impact of light on different surfaces to create distinctive effects. Glossy nappa sits beside suede; brushed textures are paired with neoprene; wool contrasts with rubberized finishes. The BOSS tailoring DNA stands at the center of the collection. Clean cuts and sharp silhouettes are the signature, but color, detail and combinations herald a new mood.
THE LUXE STYLE
Sportswear elements signal a modern way of dressing, but balance is key. Sharp tailoring is completed with clean sneakers or a backpack, while sporty separates are dressed with a briefcase and lace-up leather shoes. Suits in understated grays and refined navy blues are shot through with highlights of color. Full monochrome looks feature a pop of yellow, rich red or bright blue – either in a tie and leather accessory, or as a bold outerwear piece – a parka jacket or bomber. Sometimes the suit itself is the point of impact, in an intense blue or graphic houndstooth. Tailored excellence is brought into focus, with the introduction of the full canvas suit capsule. The full canvas suit combines expert tailoring techniques with cutting-edge technology for unparalleled results. Each piece is made in Germany, in dedication to master craftsmanship. A Fall/Winter collection would not be complete without outerwear. Ultimately luxe, even the heaviest-looking pieces are reworked with a lighter touch this season – whether
it’s a boiled wool coat bonded with insulating neoprene or eiderdown filling on the perfect quilted jacket. Craftsmanship is also key to soft, tailored coats made from double splittable cashmere. Working by hand, the edges of the cloth are opened up and the two layers folded back and stitched together to construct a garment that is cleanly finished and super light, eliminating the need for a lining. Rever sible blousons and bomber s in nylon and nappa leather allow for t wo completely dif ferent looks. Water-resistant jackets are laser cut and craf ted from bonded cot ton, a glimpse of the interior revealing vibrant color. Jer sey also plays an impor tant role, with raw- cut suits presenting a distinctive new option for the BOSS Man’s wardrobe. The Fall/Winter 2016 collection leads us further in a new direction for BOSS Menswear. With the influence of modern sportswear, the look has a definite ease, but the message is always this: precise, masculine and sartorial.

The Skywalk and Hugo Boss

ritish round-the-world sailor, Alex Thomson, has undertaken yet another breathtaking stunt with his racing yacht, the HUGO BOSS. The Skywalk is the third in a series of stunts that pushes the daredevil skipper to his limits and beyond.
THE LUXE STYLE
Chasing the HUGO BOSS yacht upwind using a 10 meter kite, Thomson attaches himself to a line in the water, which is fixed to the top of the mast. It pulls tight and the speed of the yacht propels him 100 meters in the air – higher than London’s Tower Bridge and double the height of the yacht. At the peak of his flight, Thomson releases himself and, using only the kite, expertly controls his descent back down to the water. He lands the kiteboard in style, whilst wearing a perfectly cut, water-resistant BOSS suit. Thomson is passionate about all things wind-powered, and so kite surfing was the natural choice when planning to complete the trilogy of stunts that began with the Keelwalk in 2012. “The previous two stunts that we carried out – the Mastwalk and the Keelwalk – were so successful that, as a team, we just knew we couldn’t stop there. We were all in agreement, we wanted to do something even bigger and better”, Thomson commented.

Manufactured in Italy, using exceptional fabric created by revered cloth-maker, Loro Piana, the suit combines a high-performing textile with confident use of colour and contemporary construction. High-twist yarn that gives crease-resistance is woven loosely in the summer suit, to create a season-appropriate jacket and trousers with a dry, tropical handle.
Following on from the gymnastic feats witnessed at last season’s LC:M, Paul Smith returns with a pedal powered presentation. Nodding to Paul’s personal love of cycling, the suit’s breathable and crease resistant credentials are put to the test by world champion, freestyle stunt cyclist, Ben Savage, as he balances precariously on a series of sculptural art pieces.

SEASIDE STORY Vilebrequin x Massimo Vitali
I
n 2016, Massimo Vitali and Vilebrequin shift perspectives, swapping the sands of Porquerolles for the pool of Le Provenรงal. The second vibrant installment in a collection of wearable art.
THE LUXE STYLE
The collaboration between Massimo Vitali and Vilebrequin was inevitable: while Vitali has dedicated his career to the art of seaside photography, Vilebrequin has been dressing the chicest bathers since 1971. As an Italian, Massimo is fascinated by rise of tanning clans on the Mediterranean coastline, identifying “beach lovers” and “rock lovers.” With this in mind, he came up with a twopart photo project for Vilebrequin paying tribute to different vacation styles on the Riviera. A mere 60km from St-Tropez, the spots chosen by Massimo each reflect the spirit of neverending summer in their own unique manner: the protected shores of Porquerolles Island and the rocky poolside of the legendary Provençal Hotel in the Giens peninsula. If last year’s Porquerolles capsule collection was a tribute to all the beach lovers, this time around, Massimo points his lens to the other side of the water, shooting the Provençal so that rock lovers can pledge their allegiance by wearing the pool print on their swimwear.
Surprising though it may seem, Vilebrequin and the Provençal share a common thread, having made their debut during the golden days of the French Riviera. The Provençal was founded in 1951 by Marius Michel, a former chef at the Lido in Paris, while Fred Prysquel, then a racing car journalist, went on to design the first ever pair of Vilebrequins in St-Tropez in 1971. Both were revolutions in their own right – and still are! Marius Michel was responsible for designing the first ever salt water pool cut from the rock, while Fred Prysquel ushered in a whole new generation of swimwear. Fast-forward to 2016, and vacationers the world over continue to wear Vilebrequin swim shorts. But perhaps not enough for Massimo Vitali’s liking! If you look a little close, you may just spot a few more in the frame thanks to a playful mise en abyme technique. The photograph will feature on the house’s signature Moorea swimsuit and on a beach tote. For the first time, it will be available on the flat belt swimsuit, the Merise, so that we can all share our love of poolside living.

Chopard 1000 Miglia Extreme For daring men

ore than a mere race, the Mille Miglia is a ritual gathering that brings together car aficionados from all over the world. On scenic roads winding through the most breathtaking Italian landscapes, they celebrate a common passion for these classic vehicles that combine technical precision, mechanical performance and timeless elegance. Precision, performance and elegance have always been cardinal virtues for a watchmaker like Chopard. And since 1988, the company has supported the Mille Miglia race, celebrating each meeting through a limited edition “Mille Miglia” watch. Last year, Chopard launched the Chopard 1000 Miglia perfume, a seductive and sophisticated fragrance that reflected the spirit of this unique event. The new Chopard 1000 Miglia Extreme is inspired by the tension of the race, the feeling of speed and the rush of adrenaline. It reflects all the intensity and excitement of the competition. Chopard 1000 Miglia Extreme was designed for daring men who are not afraid to take risks – calculated risks. For winning such a race is both a matter of self-confidence and perfect mastery. It requires all the concentration and ability of a consummate pilot to remain in the zone, to find this delicate balance between abandon and control. It is the most exhilarating feeling. It takes a very specific mindset to appreciate this kind of tension and thrive on it. Chopard 1000 Miglia Extreme was conceived for such free spirits. It is an ode to this dizzying sensation of speed, thrill and liberty. Chopard 1000 Miglia Extreme is a vibrant and addictive woody oriental. To convey the sudden rush of adrenaline experienced during a car race, Bruno Jovanovic (IFF) created a striking contrast between a fresh and vivifying floral top note of lavender and a powerful base note of leather. It perfectly symbolizes the mix of extreme intensity and unwavering assurance that characterizes a good pilot. This unique olfactory effect is sustained by a strong heart chord composed of Chopard 1000 Miglia’s iconic asphalt accord facetted with precious cedar wood. Combining a rich and smoky evocation of the road and the timeless elegance of cedar, this blend is totally in synchronization with the fragrance’s universe.
Chopard 1000 Miglia Extreme’s appearance is a tribute to the automobile and watchmaking savoir faire. Underlining the intensity of this fragrance, the bottle is uniformly black. Its lacquered mat finish is a token of sobriety and elegance. The black rubber cap is reminiscent both of the Mille Miglia watch bracelet and of the Dunlop tire that inspired it. As for the red lines that appear on the flacon and the black outer box, they imitate those found on the race cars’ crew stickers.

Mandarin Oriental Redefining luxury
W
hen it opened a couple of years ago, the Mandarin Oriental Bodrum set a new level for luxury hospitality in Turkey, if not through this part of the Middle East. Unlike the majority of the group’s hotels which are city-based, the Bodrum property is a resort. Set on a hillside overlooking Paradise Bay, the superbly designed hotel with its apartments and villas appears to grow out of the rockface. Softened through the addition of 1.2 million plants and trees, the resort is a true coastal idyll.
THE LUXE TRAVEL
Its exceptionally and beautifully appointed rooms, apartments and villas make a comfortable homefrom-home for the duration of a stay of any length. Indeed, such are the facilities and so large is the scale of the resort that it would be perfectly possible (and wonderfully enjoyable) to spend many days without setting foot outside the property.
is worth waiting for. Their Turkish fish and seafood restaurant – Balikçisi – from May to November. The fresh and locally caught salted sea bream – supreme. Dining at one of their number of beach bars does not diminish the culinary experience either – Blue Beach bar deliver on taste, ambience and view. We challenge you to find better.
With 10 restaurants – ranging from beach bars to fine cuisine (count Japanese, Italian, Mediterranean and Turkish amongst these) – you can dine differently every day.
Deservedly, and easily, our Number One.
Two beaches and a couple of swimming pools are enough for most hotels. The Mandarin Oriental has a total of 55 pools – many of their apartments have a private pool. Those that don’t have a pool often have a private garden. Some have both. All have a stunning view. Check online before you book to make sure you get the room you want. Our choice? King, sea view with pool. If the hotel were to claim they have no competition in the region, one might think them smug. If we say it, you’ll know it’s for real. We’ve travelled, and we’ve stayed at many of the world’s finest hotels around the world. This one is right at the top with the very best, and is rightly judged to be peerless in Turkey. More than merely Turkish, this is an international hotel, with local accents. For the experienced Middle Eastern traveller who enjoys life’s finest things, it’s a seamless transition. For those wishing to dip their toe back in to the culture of home, this summer will see the opening of a shisha cabin and bar. Such is the design of the resort that, through clever use of its topography, restaurants, pools, cafés and beaches are effectively hidden from one another. A walk through the shady lanes is the only way to discover the extent of this paradise – golf buggies with drivers are available for those unwilling or unable to tackle the gentle climbs. The spa lies at the heart of every Mandarin Oriental property. Bodrum’s is quite exceptional. A full menu of treatments is offered in luxurious surroundings, and for those who take their spa time a little more seriously than the rest of us – you might like to stay in one the their villas that houses its own private spa. A sign of how popular they are is that they’re building another one. Although open all-year round, this is the time the resort truly comes to life. Kurochan, the hotel’s Japanese restaurant, is only open from July to October – but

Musandam-Oman Sail’s Adventure Continues Transat Quebec-St Malo on the race card
T
he learning curve on the Sultanate of Oman’s flagship MOD70 Musandam-Oman Sail, supported by the Ministry of Tourism, is due for a shift in emphasis in 2016 with their early season programme of the Myth of Malham, the Volvo Round Ireland Yacht Race and the Transat Quebec-St Malo races designed to hand Omani crew extra roles and responsibility in the pursuit of success.
THE LUXE YACHTS
Last year the team placed the focus on fitness as they racked up thousands of miles across Europe with a 50% Omani crew, setting a new Round Ireland record plus a new speed record at Kieler Woche 2015 in Germany. The stakes have been raised this year and the selection of the three events in May, June and July will help to prepare the Omani sailors for roles at the highest level of offshore racing. The Myth of Malham at the end of May (28-29) and the Round Ireland Race in June (18) are both organised by the UK’s Royal Ocean Racing Club and offer an opportunity to compete against other MOD70s, explained skipper Sidney Gavignet, while the Quebec to St Malo Race is more about adventure and exploration. “The Quebec to St Malo Race is a classic,” he said. “It is a race I have done three times and it is special. East to west across the Atlantic starting with a 400-mile section down the Saint Lawrence river which is bordered by mountains on both sides. There are lots of whales – including the Beluga Whale – and white beaked and white sided dolphins. In a sailor’s career doing this race is something you will never forget. “It is more about adventure and the memories. Also it means two transatlantics – one going there and one coming back so it is good training for our Omani crew mates.” Although Oman Sail and Gavignet have yet to finalise the crew for the season, he is keen to take new offshore talent Raad Al Hadi, who impressed during a recent training run between Lorient and Morocco. “Raad is good and learning quickly so we will take him from Quebec to St Malo where he will gain experience but he is still a student so we do not plan to take him on the RORC races,” Gavignet said. Omani sailors Fahad Al Hasni, Sami Al Shukaili, Yassir Al Rahbi will also be back in action along with Irish offshore specialist Damian Foxall and France’s Jean Luc Nelias, who was navigator on Volvo winner Groupama in 2006. The three Omani sailors have been preparing for their summer by campaigning their J80 at the 2016 Grand Prix Ecole Navale in France having raced together for EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour in February.
Gavignet’s experience will serve Musandam-Oman Sail well in the Quebec-St Malo but the Myth of Malham, a 230-mile race from Cowes to the famous Eddystone Lighthouse and back, will be a brand new experience for him. “It is an English classic so we are looking forward to it and would love to win it. We will be up against two other MOD70s which is the main reason why we are doing it but it will be a challenge because the other two boats Phaedo and Team Concise have done a lot of sailing over the last few months.” Results are important, Gavignet continued but Oman Sail’s objective to develop top class sailors for world class events requires a broader focus. “We want the guys to take on more responsibility. To be an accomplished offshore sailor, you have to think on your feet and we have some real talent on this crew so I will be working with each crewmember individually to encourage them to take responsibility, perhaps for a winch or for safety or whatever other role they might need to prepare for a major offshore race.” The remainder of Musandam-Oman Sail’s summer programme will be announced later in the season but according to long standing crew member Fahad Al Hasni, racing against the other MOD70s is the highlight. “By the end of this programme, we would like to be the leading MOD70,” he said. “It will be a challenge because the boats are all different now and the other crews have done a lot of sailing but our time together as a team on the Farr 30 at EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour, during our training run from Lorient to Rabat and in the J80 at GP Ecole Navale has made a difference to our team work so we feel well prepared.” MOD70 Musandam-Oman Sail Programme: 1. Myth of Malham: Starts Cowes, Isle of Wight – Saturday 28 May 2. Volvo Round Ireland Yacht Race: Starts Wicklow, Ireland – Saturday 18 June 3. Quebec – St Malo: Starts Quebec, Canada – Saturday 10 July

Abu Dhabi Real Estate Market Matures
D
espite reduced activity on the back of low oil prices, demand for Abu Dhabi real estate remains intact in response to population growth, strong consumer spending power, growing tourism, the provision of diversified free-zones, and improving market regulations. By Anna Amin, Cityscape magazine Over the past decade, the Abu Dhabi skyline has transformed significantly as the real estate market has developed in line with a growing economy and population. During this time, Abu Dhabi has made impressive progress towards achieving its long-term goals of developing a world class health and education sector, as well as encouraging greater private sector participation and attracting foreign investment, in a move to liberalise its economy and diversify away from hydrocarbons, as outlined in the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. The oil question Hydrocarbons still represent about 50% of Abu Dhabi’s GDP and the steep fall in oil prices has not gone unnoticed. “Oil revenues have always been a key driver of Abu Dhabi’s economy and real estate markets – in generating a significant proportion of GDP, FDI, employment and consumer spending,” says David Dudley, International Director, JLL MENA. “The oil sector forms over half of Abu Dhabi’s GDP, so a reduction in oil price directly impacts a major part of the economy. Indirectly, low oil prices also lead to spending cuts in the government sector and a reduction in government spending on economic diversification and infrastructure. If low oil revenues are to remain for the foreseeable future, there is a case to say that there is an even greater need for the government to continue to invest to diversify the economy,” Dudley comments. Faisal Durrani, Partner and Head of Research, Cluttons, says that due to the oil price rout, government deposit levels have fallen by AED 56 billion in the 12-months to the end of September 2015 (according to the National Bank of Abu Dhabi), suggesting a liquidity crunch may be building in the background. “This will have a direct impact on the mortgage

market, which is already very restrictive and business lending may also come under increased pressure,” Durrani explains.
price has led to a reduction in investor sentiment, which has negatively impacted the sale market and transaction volumes.
On the positive, Dudley says that real estate demand growth continues from major capital projects commenced when oil revenues were strong. “Projects such as the airport expansion, the growth of Etihad Airline and major tourism attractions have an economic multiplier effect, ensuring continued GDP growth,” he says. He adds however that it is increasingly evident that job cuts are happening, and government spending on the next wave of major projects will be on hold for a while, leading to a slowdown in the pace of demand growth.
Cluttons’ Durrani adds that since the market remains sentiment driven, it would be remiss not to factor in the oil price story. “Depending on whether your glass is half full, or half empty, the oil price fall may be viewed as the catalyst that drives further economic diversification, or the primary reason for the real estate sector slowdown. In reality, the sentiment is probably a combination of the two,” he says.
Market sentiment Abu Dhabi’s real estate markets experienced an upswing from 2013 to 2014, led by residential price growth at 25% per annum and a general recovery of all sectors, which was driven by improved economic conditions, investor sentiment and increased government spending, as per JLL. “This bull-run came to an end in Q4 2014, triggered by the decline in oil prices, sentiment and a slowdown in Dubai’s real estate markets – with most of Abu Dhabi’s real estate sectors remaining flat during 2015,” Dudley says. According to JLL, the short term outlook is for reduced demand growth, but also reduced annual supply completions – leading to relatively stable market conditions characterised by low vacancy rates in high quality stock and prime rents remaining relatively stable across each asset class. “The extent to which this stability is maintained very much depends on the return of domestic government spending in spite of a reduction in oil revenues,” Dudley says. While JLL say that supply and demand dynamics remain relatively balanced for end-user demand, the decline in oil
Residential market In the residential rental market, “while demand growth has reduced due to the slowdown in economic growth and job cuts in government and oil sectors, this is offset by a major reduction in annual supply completions leading to relatively limited vacancy in many sub-sectors of the market. Annual supply completions historically averaged 10,000 units per annum – however current supply completions are a fraction of that,” Dudley says. According to JLL, prime residential rents increased by over 30% over the past three years, with the annual growth rate decreasing each year at 17% in 2013, 11% in 2014 and 4% in 2015. “During 2016, we expect residential rents to remain relatively stable in some sub-sectors, and we expect to see a modest decline in rents for others, but given relatively tight vacancy rates within quality schemes we are not expecting a dramatic fall in rents due to limited supply completions coming through. In the event that the current pause in government spending remains for a while longer we could see more significant downward movement of rents,” Dudley says. Abu Dhabi’s residential sales market on the other hand remains dominated by speculators with a much smaller proportion of the buyer market representing yield investors and owner occupiers, as per Dudley.

REAL ESTATE REPORT
“Over recent years, prime residential prices went up at a higher growth rate than rents – at 25% per annum growth during 2013 and 2014 and a major increase in transaction volumes. As the market softened during 2015, prices have remained stable but transaction volumes have dropped significantly. During 2016, we expect transaction volumes to remain low putting greater pressure on sales prices,” Dudley says. Office market According to JLL, market-wide office vacancy rates have reduced from 40% to low 20%s over the last few years. “While 20% is a significant vacancy rate,” as Dudley says, “vacancy rates within established Grade A buildings are minimal, leading to rental growth for Grade A rents over recent years.” Cluttons’ Durrani adds that while the capital’s Grade A office market remains relatively small and demand for high quality space is stable and strong, the recycling of space previously occupied by the hydrocarbon sector may however cause rents to stabilise or fall slightly in older schemes. Although the recent development of oil companies reducing headcount and shedding office space, which has led to increased vacancy in the office market, JLL say that this is mitigated by minimal increases to new speculative supply. “The majority of new office buildings are either committed to end users (such as ADNOC/ADIB HQs) or are in secondary locations. The free-zones offer an opportunity for new growth sectors and are able to command a rental premium due to the regulatory benefits they offer,” Dudley says. In terms of development, JLL believe that in the short term there is limited potential to develop new speculative office
supply – other than cost-effective, functional business park space in decentralised locations at a reduced land cost, or new buildings secured by occupational pre-lets. Retail market Abu Dhabi’s retail market has shown significant growth over recent years and welcomed the addition of high-quality malls to its landscape such as Yas Mall on Yas Island and The Galleria on Al Maryah Island. The outlook for the market is positive. “Significant consumer spending power from the local population and continual growth of tourism volumes mean that retail rents remain relatively stable and are expected to remain so over the short term,” Dudley says. “While significant retail space is set to enter the market from 2018 onwards – notably Al Maryah Central and Reem Mall – the development pipeline has reduced and demand growth remains positive, particularly linked to tourism growth,” Dudley says, adding that with greater competition however, JLL expect the market to polarise with lower quality malls needing to be re-positioned. Hotel market As Abu Dhabi is working on establishing itself as a major tourist destination in the region, the emirate’s hospitality market continues to grow to meet the demand from rising tourism numbers. Dudley says that tourism growth now outstrips supply growth. “On the supply side, while the last few years have seen major additions to supply, the decision by the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (ADTCA) to limit the number of new hotel licenses has reduced the amount of supply coming through. Across Abu Dhabi, only 1,000 keys were delivered
REAL ESTATE REPORT
during 2015, increasing supply to 20,700 keys at year-end. An additional 4,900 keys are however scheduled for delivery between 2016 and 2017 in the emirate,” he says. While supply completions remain limited, demand has been growing at a significant pace. According to JLL, major projects leading to increased tourism demand include the expansion of the airport and Etihad Airline, increased capture of stopover demand, the improvement of Abu Dhabi’s leisure offering and ongoing sports, entertainment and corporate events supported by global marketing initiatives. “The growth in tourism demand from these initiatives initially led to an improvement to occupancy rates, followed by recovery of ADRs given year-on-year growth in tourism arrivals. Medium term hospitality demand trends are highly positive as the government’s various large-scale initiatives to grow tourism continue, resulting in further major increases to annual visitor arrivals,” Dudley says. Improving regulatory environment As Abu Dhabi’s real estate market has continued to grow over the past decade, so has its regulatory environment evolved with 2016 marking a major step towards greater maturity for the emirate.
Public sector support is crucial to addressing the affordable housing issue as, in the words of Dudley, “it is unlikely that the private sector will be able to deliver [affordable housing] without public sector support.” Coinciding with the implementation of Abu Dhabi’s new real estate law that came into effect in January this year is also the opening of Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) on Al Maryah Island. As the financial free-zone continues to publish additional regulations which affects the real estate market on Al Maryah Island, the zone will benefit from better clarity and regulations for all companies and individuals wishing to invest in real estate on the island. According to Dudley, Abu Dhabi’s free-zones such as ADGM, Masdar City, twofour54, SkyCity and KIZAD, are supporting further growth in Abu Dhabi’s real estate market through attracting continued investments. “These [free-zones] are now gaining momentum and offer strong benefits to occupiers, further helping to stimulate demand growth [in Abu Dhabi],” the JLL expert concludes.
“During 2015, the government published its long-awaited real estate laws including setting up a new Real Estate Regulatory Authority and new regulations affecting escrow accounts, land and property registration, strata law, the licencing of real estate activity and new fees and procedures. These laws are now in the process of being implemented. “The law will help support a better regulated market, will improve transparency and will help protect consumers and investors. With a current slowdown in transaction activity, the full impact of the new laws will be felt during the next upswing,” Dudley explains. According to JLL, the new law places greater regulation on developers, which will inevitably suppress supply growth. “This will help reduce the risk of oversupply in the current period of weaker demand but the key will be maintaining a healthy balance between supply and demand to keep rents and prices at a competitive level,” Dudley says. While Abu Dhabi’s residential market is not short of high-end developments, the lack of affordable housing is a persisting issue which the government is also aiming at addressing. “New planned legislation around fixed quotas for ‘affordable homes’ may help to ease access to the property market; however further detail is yet to be confirmed. In order to truly tackle the problem of affordability, it’s important to run the numbers. When you consider that an average expat household aspiring to purchase a home has to contend with an average annual rent of AED 204,000 against an average household income of AED 199,000, the problem of the lack of affordable housing in Abu Dhabi is incredibly clear, especially when you factor in the 34% increase in average house prices since 2010,” Cluttons’ Durrani says.

Students from Kuwait University, Gulf University of Science & Technology, the American University of Kuwait, Box Hill College of Kuwait and the Australian College of Kuwait each held entrepreneurship competitions for potential cash and prizes, and the chance to advance to the Startup Kuwait National Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition. Since January, over 600 college students in Kuwait have participated in Startup Kuwait events, and 110 student entrepreneur teams submitted entries to the program. On May 29th, the top 11 teams also pitched to a group of distinguished entrepreneurs, business leaders and government officials for a chance to win various prizes and support for their venture. The students were judged on several criteria, including innovation, opportunity, the relevance to Kuwait and the GCC, the business model, progress to date, social responsibility, and other markers set at the individual college level. They learned about Lean Startup and the Minimum Viable Product, the importance to guerrilla marketing and social media, and how to directly communicate with customers.
The majority of the student teams fell into three categories. The largest group wanted to be service providers in Kuwait - ranging from business documentation to salon and beauty. The second largest group wanted to start restaurants, cafĂŠs and entertainment venues. And finally, a few enterprising teams were looking to create new technologies to solve problems in Kuwait. Happy Diamonds Celebrating an iconic watch Since 1976, Happy Diamonds have been joyfully lighting up the eponymous creations from Chopard. Over the years, the famous moving diamonds have been staged through a myriad of precious and playful watch and jewellery creations. This year, Chopard is revisiting the iconic model in which they were first introduced. The first Happy Diamonds creation was a gents watch with a large cushion-shaped 18-carat white gold case framing a black dial magnificently highlighting the first moving diamonds. This first creation, which won the prestigious Golden Rose of Baden-Baden in 1976, has inspired a model celebrating the 40th anniversary of the invention of moving diamonds.
Paying tribute to the original cushion shape, but this time designed for ladies, today’s Happy Diamonds watch is a precious jewelled timepiece exuding a vintage charm mixed with a contemporary feel. The prong-set diamonds circling the dial emphasise its gentle curves, while moving diamonds whirl freely across a textured white mother-of-pearl background. Chopard is introducing a new type of Happy Diamonds: diamonds set with prongs, to sparkle even more while continuing their free and playful dance. There are more diamonds than ever on the dial and they also vary in size, thereby accentuating their whirling dance and the sense of diamond-studded profusion. Inside this playground, a mini subdial, also ringed with diamonds, bears the watch hands. This precious timepiece also exists in a round-shaped version.
