2019
Dear Passionate Readers, We all started our year with the “10-Year Challenge” and it was so interesting for me to observe the various reactions! My initial reaction was to go through my albums to find that one picture that looks the closest to me today! And when I finally found it, I caught myself in the middle of my exhilaration and went… wait a second! What am I so excited about!? That I did not change? Since when?! I have always been the one to not only welcome change but to actually seek it! Why was I having this reaction when it came to my physical appearance!? Then I wondered… How is one supposed to grow and achieve and become, if one is so focused on freezing time!? So, here is to my new 10-Year Challenge!! Yes, I want to keep looking good, but more importantly I want to continue to feel good. And in order to do that, there is one more thing I need to accept... Time changes us… it changes the way we look. It does… and it is simply okay to accept this. I shall give myself the right to grow older, but I shall never allow myself to feel or think old. Every day is a gift and looking back at where I was 10 years ago and where I am today, makes me look forward to the next 10 years! CHALLENGE, here we come!!

Dr. Adel Quttainah Founder and CEO at The Quttainah Medical Center
The Quttainah Medical Center has earned a reputation as one of the key players in the Cosmetic Medicine and Surgery market sector in Kuwait and the region. It was established and is run by a remarkable man – Dr. Adel Quttainah.
COVER STORY
Facilities such as the QMC don’t create themselves, and behind them lays a story of passion and commitment. We learned more from Dr. Adel himself…
What is the extent of services offered at the QMC? We started initially to be the Middle East’s largest center for aesthetic medicine. Today, however, we’re covering a much broader range. QMC consists of four state of the art operating theaters, exclusive inpatients suites, services include Cosmetic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dermatology, ENT (Facial Plastic Surgery), Skin Care and Laser Department, Bariatric and General Surgery, Cosmetic Dental Surgery, Non- Surgical weight loss Department, Gynecology and Infertility-IVF Clinic, LVR (Cosmetic Gynecology Clinic), Complete Breast Care Clinic, Hair Transplantation, Oasis IV Hydration Clinic as well as many other services and disciplines. Why did you choose cosmetic surgery as a career? Simply, because I didn’t want to do anything else. I didn’t want to specialise in a specific area of surgery, and this is the only speciality that covers all ages and both genders. There’s always something new, a fresh challenge and a solution to be found. What is the most challenging aspect of your role in Kuwait and the region? Like any other business, you have to be consistent. that’s the challenge. In our sector, the highest quality is always the supreme goal. Happy patients bring happy patients. What’s the secret behind your success? What are your values and ambitions? There’s no secret - it’s all just pure hard work. I’m still working 100 hours a week – it’s what’s required if we’re going to maintain ourselves as the best. My ambitions are to open similar centers in Gulf states – but I’ll only do this when I can guarantee carrying forward our strong work ethics and rigid discipline to new locations.

COVER STORY
“A car’s aerodynamics and aesthetics interest me more than pure speed. I like to know what’s under the hood and appreciate the technology. For me, McLaren are the best in this regard – getting so much out of a tightly packaged engine”
How big a role does technology play in the development of surgical and cosmetic techniques? Where are the biggest strides being taken in this regard?
A friend tried to get me interested in McLarens, but to me, it was a racing car marque, that was all. Everything changed though when I got into one. The experience changed my view of English automotives.
In plastic and cosmetic surgery – other than perhaps in dermatology with its laser machines - technology doesn’t play as significant a role as people might think. You can’t tell a robot to ‘fix this nose.’ The surgeon’s skill is always the prime technology in this sector. A good plastic surgeon is the key.
Here was a stable, responsive and practical supercar – and one that can be driven every day. McLaren’s attention to detail – and luxury touches – make it perfect for me.
Work / Life Balance
You might be surprised to learn it’s not just the speed… it’s the whole package. All cars are fast these days. A car’s aerodynamics and aesthetics interest me more than pure speed.
You’re a busy man. How do you juggle the work / life balance? How do you manage to find time for family and other passions? To be honest, I don’t manage it all that well, other than at weekends or when we travel. When you’re away from QMC, do you find it easy to disconnect from work altogether?
What is it about fast cars that fascinates you?
I like to know what’s under the hood and appreciate the technology. For me, McLaren are the best in this regard – getting so much out of a tightly packaged engine. What would be your ideal car? The 720S.
Not totally. Although my specialty is more comfortable to move away from because I’m unlikely to be called on an emergency, I never disconnect altogether. Freetime We know you’re a passionate car enthusiast, and a McLaren aficionado in particular. What is it about Woking’s finest that attracted you in the first place?
What else fills your time away from surgery? I have a museum - the first and only medical museum in Kuwait. I’ve collected around 400 pieces over the past 25 years. It’s a passion of mine. Whenever I travel, you’ll find me searching antique markets around the world for additional pieces. I also use the internet to search for unique pieces. I have an old wooden stethoscope that took a year to find.

Banani Raising the real estate bar
Banani App is a tool developed and designed to elevate the tenant-landlord relationship. Its primary goal as a tool is to raise the bar of service quality provided by landlords and create brand power and recognition for real estate developers.
ENTREPRENEUR
It allows current and potential tenants to: • Evaluate a listed property on multiple factors • Communicate directly with landlords before and during a tenure • Read the evaluations of others who have visited and resided at properties • Manage book-able facilities • Follow a building of interest for future vacancies • Request, track and review maintenance with ease And many more powerful features We met with co-founder Mohammad Alhusaini to learn more…
What is your view of the infrastructure in Kuwait for tech startups? Infrastructure in Kuwait is luckily one that encourages entrepreneurship. However, many improvements can be made on both sides of the equation which are the government and its laws and the venture capital firms. The government is in a great position to radically change the ease of creating and starting a business. There are still a few steps that need to be taken, some more difficult than others. For example, it would make a significant impact on entrepreneurs if the process of licensing and incorporating a company was more straightforward and less costly. Additionally, banks can be more lenient in allowing a business account to startups. On the VC side, it is up to them to attract more audacious and forward-thinking entrepreneurs to their portfolios. But that takes more risk in pre-series A funding. Comparing the landscape to 5 or even 10 years ago, there is a remarkable shift and I believe the future of tech startups in Kuwait is bright. How will the app generate income for you? Banani is an app focused on delivering value first. We have multiple methods of doing that whether it is via its Intelligent Listing feature, powerful management tools for real estate owners or the extremely sensible dashboard which is designed for owners and managers to see the pulse of their company in under sixty seconds. Having said that, Banani only charges for its payment gateway a competitive fee and today provides all other features and modules at no cost to its clients and their clients as well. What’s the likely rollout schedule? Kuwait launch / regional / further international. Our rollout schedule is to focus on delivering tremendous value to the Kuwaiti market first starting in February. We will be going through all of the regional testing in that period and begin to bring the product to the mainstream within one month of launch. Shortly after, we will be seeking partners to expand into the GCC region and concentrate on the GCC as our operating hub and region. We want to ensure that all the opportunity we create is centered in this region before we move on to international expansion.
What’s the best piece of advice you’d give to fellow tech startups in Kuwait and the region? My advice may not be what everyone wants to hear, but it’s the truth: the road to entrepreneurship is tough. It doesn’t matter whether you have the capital or not, it doesn’t matter whether you’re lucky or not. Delivering a valuable experience continuously and in a fashion that sustains your business is a difficult undertaking. The road is tough, and it is never smooth. You will encounter problems, and they will come in places you don’t expect. If your goal is to deliver value to others and if you believe in your mission then all of these difficulties will be overcome. It’s when you don’t have faith in what you are doing that these problems become immovable obstacles. Be patient and be confident that there is a solution to every question you encounter. The effect of Banani App is to raise the bar concerning tenant and landlord character and attitude. Developer properties can now be valued at their real potential as opposed to the current evaluation which is only concerned with annual income alone. With Banani App, developers’ properties can be evaluated for their Brand Power among other factors. The launching of Banani App is phased out to be local, followed by regional and finally global.

MEN’S PASSION
Kuwait – The sleeping giant of the Gulf Today Kuwait is on the verge of a massive repositioning. With investment and new thinking set to transform the country into a regional financial and cultural hub by 2035, Kuwait’s National Development Plan has sparked a bold term for what is now underway – New Kuwait.
NEW KUWAIT
A grand title? Not when Kuwait’s claims are delivered on a solid pillar of structured urban reform married with an outward-looking philosophy. Is the Gulf’s most northerly state about to awake? We think so, and here’s why Kuwait is worth taking a fresh view of. Cultural Revival Recent developments have seen Kuwait’s cultural sector – the envy of the whole of the Gulf and most of the Middle East until the mid-1970s – once again punch at its own weight throughout the region. Two huge complexes – the Sheikh Jaber AlAhmad Cultural Centre (JACC) and the Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre (ASCC) – have recently exploded the Emirate back on to the arts scene. Owned by the Amiri Diwan of Kuwait’s, the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed Cultural Centre is a multidisciplinary public space with a mission to entertain, educate and inspire the people of the nation. It offers a program of events – music, theatre, film, workshops and spoken word – for every generation and sector of society.
JACC provides a space for dialogue to share and showcase skills and knowledge, giving younger voices a forum in which to speak. The cultural centre has proved itself a genuine platform for educational and cultural exchange and, importantly, today it functions as an influential entertainment and culture powerhouse and productive space for the region. Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre is one of the world’s largest cultural complexes housing a total of 22 galleries with over 1,100 exhibits. The complex offers a Natural History Museum, Science and Technology Museum, a Fine Arts Centre, Arabic Islamic Science Museum, Space Museum, and Theatre. A cultural complex of growing global significance, together with JACC it is part of the Kuwait National Cultural District (KNDC). A third cluster of the KNDC is the lush Al Shaheed Park Museums Complex – the largest urban park in Kuwait, it is home to the Remembrance Museum and the Habitat Museum. These three arts and culture developments comprise a multi-billion-dollar project that, with a capital cost of more than US$1 billion, makes this project one of the largest cultural investments in the world today.
32 33
MEN’S PASSION
Along with a lively roster of shows and exhibitions hosted by privately-run galleries and cultural spaces, Kuwait can today rightly hold its head high in regional affairs of the arts.
• 2020-2025: private sector engagement and initiatives • 2025 – 2030: knowledge-based economy • 2035: New Kuwait – toward smart Kuwait
Commercial Revival
The pillars of New Kuwait stand on seven firm tenets, including an effective public administration, creative human capital, a sustainable and diversified economy, strong progressive infrastructure, high-quality healthcare, a sustainable living environment, and exceptional international positioning.
Ah. The thorny issue of creating a post-oil Arabian Peninsula. Divisive, problematic, controversial and devilishly expensive to prepare for it is, whether one likes it or not, coming. Kuwait, as in the case of its Gulf Cooperation Council partners, is repositioning its commercial sector in the face of the change, and investing heavily. There is no one better placed to describe the vision of Kuwait’s National Development Plan than its ruler, the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah:
The revival is being led through the implementation of an ambitious construction program.
“[To] transform Kuwait into a financial and trade hub, attractive to investors, where the private sector leads the economy, creating competition and promoting production efficiency, under the umbrella of enabling government institutions, which accentuates values, safeguards social identity, and achieve human resource development as well as balanced development, providing adequate infrastructure, advanced legislation and inspiring business environment.”
The nation will soon welcome its second airport terminal – a US$1.5 billion project. National growth will create a power-hungry and water-thirsty Emirate, one that the under-construction Alkhairan Power Plant – with its 1,800MW and 125 million gallons of water - will do their best to assuage, while a future plant at Alzour will generate more than twice these figures. A railroad is currently in the consulting phase. Trains, trams and monorails are very much in vogue with the plans of all the Gulf’s states – don’t expect Kuwait to be left standing in the station once the wheels begin to turn.
It’s a 20-year plan, and one which won’t be fully realised until 2035 but, unlike previously announced bids to create a revitalized nation, the current vision is wellplanned and realistically structured: • 2010-2015: legislative activities prepare the road ahead • 2015 – 2020: infrastructure building
Sustainable living projects will result in the creation of four entirely new cities or commercial districts – all largely funded through the opening of the state to easier access by international investors. The Silk City and Boubyan Island development will transform five of Kuwait’s most politically sensitive offshore properties into cultural, nature, commercial, ecological and security zones.
NEW KUWAIT
What’s Kuwait’s special ingredient to ensure the success of all these projects? Visionary leadership and commitment, tied to an already first-rate existing infrastructure that’s being upgraded to world-class. Societal Opportunities Looking at raw data, Gross Domestic Product per capita in Kuwait was recorded at US$65,530 in 2017, similar to that of the UAE, and when adjusted by purchasing power parity (PPP) is equivalent to 369 percent of the world’s average. Growth is expected to continue, reaching around US$70,000 by 2020. By contrast, Japan’s is around US$40,000, Bahrain’s US$43,000, and Switzerland’s US$57,000. Having said that, keep in mind that Qatar’s is an eye-watering US$117,000 – but they may have other limitations on their mind for the foreseeable future.
Kuwaitis represents lucrative returns for retailers or desirable products – from luxury apparel to luxury cars and, increasingly, luxury marine products. Kuwait has an extraordinarily high level of HNWIs. They travel, they are style-aware, and they want the world (and their neighbors) to know it. The Outlook For Kuwait? Positive. Adopting a steady-as-she-goes approach to reviving and reinventing this proud nation has proved the wisest of strategies. Commercial and societal success of a rich and powerful nation means only one thing for this great nation – the tide is rising and the good times will roll.

In naming it ‘GT of the Year’, BBC’s Top Gear magazine praised the Continental GT’s depth of engineering, with the publication describing it as “simply one of the most complete GT cars on the planet”. Particular praise was given to the car’s composure on road, making it “easier than ever to thread through the tricky bits”. In the inaugural News UK Motor Awards, including the Times and Sun titles, the Continental GT was named ‘Luxury Car of the Year’. The judges noted that “the cabin feels as sumptuously appointed as the Princess Grace Suite at the Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo” and that “unlike many sports cars, you’ll arrive feeling as relaxed as when the journey started”. The new BMW M8 Rounding the final corner to production
From the race track to the road: the new BMW M8 Coupe is rounding the final corner en route to series production. BMW M GmbH is putting an early prototype of its upcoming flagship through its paces at the Estoril grand-prix racing circuit in Portugal.
DRIVE
“The new BMW M8 will elevate dynamic élan, agility and precision to a whole new level for its segment,” commented Markus Flasch, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW M GmbH. This is down in no small part to the extensive motor sport expertise of BMW M GmbH that was harnessed for production development of the BMW M8. The basic blueprint provided by the BMW 8 Series Coupe formed the ideal basis on which to build the new BMW M8. The BMW 8 Series Coupe has all the right ingredients – in terms of weight minimisation, centre of gravity, weight distribution, wheelbase length, track width, plus high body and chassis rigidity – to deliver handling characteristics focused on superb lateral and longitudinal dynamics. M-specific chassis tuning maximises dynamic prowess. The engineers at BMW M GmbH then pushed the boat out to endow the new BMW
M8 with the hallmark performance traits of a BMW M model. This is neatly illustrated by the design of the chassis, which underwent a fundamental rework to give the car outstanding agility and precision. All the components involved in delivering M-specific kinematics and elastokinematics have been revised. McLaren’s Speedtails start their journey Did you get yours ordered?
Every aspect of the McLaren Speedtail is designed to push established boundaries and this extends to the look and feel of each individual car. Each hand-built Speedtail will be tailored to the customer’s exact requirements, but to help make this process less demanding, McLaren’s Colour and Material design team has curated an extensive and innovative range of design concepts, arranged into three key collections.
The first, Urbane, is a collection of three themes which have been created to offer a discerning and refined feel, giving the Speedtail a sophisticated look with calm exterior hues, plus subtle and cool interior tones. One theme is Stratosphere, which sees the Speedtail finished in gloss 1K full visual carbon fibre with the contour pack, which is designed to accentuate the exterior highlights of the car’s aerodynamic bodywork. It’s set off with bespoke brushed light blue anodised aluminium brightwork, ensuring that every shimmering curve of the exterior is revealed. The luxuriant detail extends to the badging, which is crafted in platinum with TPT carbon inlay, whilst the cool-hued cabin blends the metallic light blue driver seat with light grey passenger seats. Completing the look are bespoke navy painted edge with navy contrast stitch and bespoke brushed light blue anodised aluminium brightwork. The second collection is appropriately named Visionary and offers a purposeful and unmistakeable look from moody, yet striking shades, to opulent and surprising touches. It includes the stunning Astral theme, inspired by the UK’s wealth of nautical heritage with an interior dominated by timeless navy blue, including nubuck bespoke navy passenger seats and full aniline leather bespoke navy driver’s seat, bespoke Nebular quilt and digital print on nubuck bespoke navy leather upper trim. This is juxtaposed with a vibrant, surprising exterior finished in bespoke orange with bespoke silver pinstripe, gloss 1K visual carbon fibre and white gold 18 carat with TPT inlay badging.
DRIVE
The third collection, Dynamic, is exciting and modern and makes bold statements with sporty, futuristic and sumptuous themes. It’s epitomised by the Bloodline theme, distinguished by an unhindered burst of bespoke red on the exterior, with gloss black diamond cut wheels featuring a bespoke light copper edge and silver brake calipers. Inside, the driver seat is contrasted in full aniline bespoke red, whilst passengers sit on lightweight semi aniline bespoke white seats. Accentuating the athletic theme, the steering wheel clasp, paddle shifters, window and door bezel surround are highlighted in TPT carbon quartz white. Each one of the three collections offers Speedtail customers the opportunity to personalise their car to the smallest detail with the prediction that, like the McLaren P1™ before it, every model in the 106car production run will be unique to its owner. All feature detail highlights such as body and interior panels finished in satin 1K or gloss 1K with interwoven gold visual carbon fibre or anodised aluminium, contouring and pinstriping to accentuate the elegant flow of the bodywork. Interior options include bespoke electro-chromatic glazing tints that remove the need for sun visors, nubuck and aniline leather, TPT carbon control surfaces and white gold 18 carat and TPT carbon badging.

The new Porsche 911 The eighth generation of an icon
Looking back over our life, there have been a number of constants throughout. Something that, whenever you look, it’s always there, just doing its thing. The Rolling Stones for one, Robert de Niro another. And then there’s the Porsche 911. While the Rolling Stones and Mr. de Niro are still working with v1, from 2020 Porsche will be moving on to their eighth (yes, really, eighth) generation of the enduring 911. Where’s it going to stand in the list of all-time 911s? How much better is it than the 911 you’re driving? We packed our bags and headed to Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Spain to find out.
DRIVE
A measured response to a 911 is difficult to achieve – when did you last look at one and not feel your pulse beat a little faster? However, we’ve become accustomed to seeing a new Porsche and waiting for its looks to grow on us. Not in the case of the 992 (Porsche’s internal reference for the latest-gen 911). The lines of the new model are bang on. Aesthetically, it’s one of the most complete designs on the road today. How come? The exterior design is familiar and yet undoubtedly new. The eighth-generation 911 is wider, more assertive, and more advanced. Wider wings arch over the large 20-inch wheels at the front and 21-inch wheels at the rear. The rear-wheel-drive models now match the bodywork width of the existing all-wheel models. The rear axle is 44 mm larger here. The front end – generally 45 mm wider – revives a traditional feature of earlier 911 generations: a forward-extended bonnet with a distinctive recess in front of the windscreen. Both elements lengthen the front of the vehicle and give it a dynamic look. Every perspective of the 992 delivers a great view. The rear of all models is dominated by the significantly wider, variable-position spoiler and the seamless, elegant light bar. The interior is distinctive, with clear, straight lines and recessed instruments defining the dashboard. 911 models from the 1970s provided the inspiration here, with the new dashboard spanning the entire width between two horizontal wing levels, just as it did in the original 911. It’s fresh, it’s uncluttered, it works. There’s a new feel to buttons and switches. If you’re a modern traditionalist, you’ll love the clicks and the feel. Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche AG: “The eighth generation of the 911 is even more powerful, even more emotional, and even more efficient than its predecessor – and also offers extensive digital features. And in spite of all the innovations, the 911 is still just what it has always been: a puristic sports car and the pulsing heart of Porsche – our icon.”

MEN’S PASSION
He’s not wrong. This is an automobile bursting with tech, but instead of taking away from the driving experience, they’re adding to it. What’s hot? The new 911 is the first in the world to feature an innovative system for recognising significant wetness on the road, including the Wet driving programme that can be manually selected at any time. This program has been specially developed to support the driver in wet conditions. The system uses acoustic sensors in the front wheel housings to recognise sprayed-up splash water, and in this way can detect wetness on the road. This makes it fundamentally different from windscreen wiper rain sensors, which only react optically to water droplets on the windscreen, independently of the road conditions. The response behaviour of the PSM and PTM systems is preconditioned if a road is recognised as wet. The system informs the driver of the detected wetness and recommends manually switching to Wet mode. If the driver activates this mode, the Porsche Stability Management (PSM), Porsche Traction Management (PTM), aerodynamics, optional Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) Plus, and drive responsiveness are adapted to the conditions in such a way as to guarantee the best possible driving stability. From 90km/h, the rear spoiler is adjusted to maximum downforce, the cooling air flaps open, the accelerator pedal characteristic is flatter, and PSM Off or Sport mode can no longer be activated. We pushed it to the limit on a hosed-down and very wet Circuit Ricardo Tormo. While the standard systems worked more than adequately in keeping us on the soggy tarmac, in wet mode we pushed
harder, and found ourselves snapped-back in to line whenever the electronics felt things were going a little too sideways. We drove the same circuit with and without wet mode engaged. Without was certainly too hairy than we’d care to make a habit of. Engaged, and we’re still driving the car, senses on alert, but things were far more manageable. Even more tellingly, observing other drivers fighting the car without wet mode, and flowing neatly in wet mode, it is clearly the fastest way to proceed. We’re surprised that engaging wet mode is an option – it makes a great deal of sense to take the system’s advice and switch it on when invited. For sure, wet mode is as much a leap forward in road safety as was the introduction of ABS many years ago. Keep an eye open for it – soon you’ll see versions of it everywhere. The new 911 also brings a new generation of turbocharged flatsix engines. Advanced development has been primarily focused on further enhancing performance, alongside meeting the latest emissions standards by including a gasoline particulate filter (GPF). New, larger turbochargers with symmetrical layout and electrically controlled wastegate valves, a completely redesigned charge air cooling system, increased compression, as well as the newly implemented piezo injectors combine to attain engine improvements in all relevant areas: responsiveness, power, torque characteristic, efficiency and manoeuvrability. In addition to the 22 kW (30 PS) increase in power to 331 kW (450 PS) at 6,500/min, the engine offers 30 Nm higher torque, at 530 Nm between 2,300 rpm and 5,000 rpm. The 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S are being launched exclusively with the first eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) for Porsche sports cars. Shifting is super-fast. You already know how good the seven-speed PDK was… well imagine that, and then add some.

new ratios: first gear is now shorter and eighth gear longer than before. This has made it possible to implement a longer final-drive ratio, thereby further reducing engine speeds in the upper gears. And the drive? Efficient and proficient – just as you’d expect from any contemporary Porsche. But, somehow, they’ve added to their typically Teutonic class with several bucket loads of somewhat surprising flair and ebullience. McLaren’s 720S Spider Breaks cover at the Kuwait Motor Show
The McLaren 720S Spider is a car that delivers the best of both worlds… a convertible supercar that’s every bit as thrilling as the Coupe. That means the same nerve-tingling rush, now available with the roof down. This is a car for those who see more… who look beyond convention and seek out the extraordinary. The 720S Spider is a full-throttle supercar with a retractable roof – all in one beautifully honed package. Making its regional launch at this year’s Kuwait Motor Show, our MD, Zeina Mokaddam met with McLaren Automotive’s Marketing & PR Manager, Adam Gron to learn more about this remarkable motor. The new Spider is a remarkable automobile, adding to its brother - the already stellar 720S Coupé. Other than the retractable roof, what’s new? In terms of our product lineup, the coupe was launched in 2017 to a very positive reception; we believe we have the right formula with the model. So, what we wanted to do was create a car with the same driving experience as the coupe, but with a retractable roof, thereby giving it the added exhilaration of open top motoring. The driving characteristics, the structural rigidity, the performance figures, and the engine are all unchanged from the coupe. We’ve created the lightest convertible supercar on the market. The Spider is built around our carbon-fibre Monocage II-S, it is this which forms the core structure of the car – including safety. We’re pioneers in this regard, and we’re also rather obsessive when it comes to saving weight. Driving the weight of our vehicles down in a key challenge for us. We hear the roof mechanism is a special piece of engineering in itself. The lightest and fastest in class. Tell us about it. The roof is something we are very proud of. Firstly, we’ve designed it to maintain the silhouette of the coupe. Also, it is the fastest supercar roof on the market, and it can be operated at up to 50kmh and takes only 11 seconds to open or close. What are the customisation options available? All our cars are hand-assembled – and so list of options is extensive. Beyond new colours and trims, for the first time we’re offering an electrochromic glass roof which allows the driver to tint the roof glass at the touch of a button – particularly useful in a climate such as the Middle East’s. Our MSO (McLaren Special Operations) offers what is essentially a bespoke service to our customers. Options are infinite. What’s your customer profile in Kuwait? Who’s buying? What’s selling? Kuwait is an important market for us, and our dealer here was Dealer of the Year in 2016 and 2017. We are hugely appreciative of all their great work. In terms of our customers here, they’re passionate drivers - not only men, women too. We create our cars around the driving experience; they’re exhilarating... but ready to be driven every day. It’s the second model from your Track25 business plan. What’s next? We’re announcing our third, the 600LT Spider. We’ve more than 20 to go, and all will remain true to the brand’s DNA. I can’t give any details for now, I’ll just say “watch this space”! We can’t ignore McLaren’s new Speedtail. How many were sold in Kuwait / in the region. And when will deliveries commence? Only 106 will be made for global delivery, and deliveries will begin in 2020. In the region, the car was overwhelmingly popular, and I can confirm that at least one example will be delivered in Kuwait. What further hybrid / electric developments do you have in the pipeline? This is an exciting time for the automotive industry, and for McLaren Automotive too. Towards the end of Track25 plan, 100% of our cars will include some form of hybridization. Our main reason for this is to enhance performance – we can smooth torque curves and use electrics to add to the exhilaration.

LANGE 1 “25th Anniversary” Jubilee edition of A. Lange & Söhne’s best-known timepiece
The LANGE 1 was the first watch of the new era and has been A. Lange & Söhne’s undisputed icon for 25 years. This is why the manufactory is celebrating the anniversary of the award-winning watch with a “25th Anniversary” edition in white gold limited to 250 timepieces. Its special features include a deep-blue printed argenté dial with a recess, blue date numerals, a hinged cuvette with an engraving of Lange’s headquarters and a hand-engraved balance cock with blued lines.
WATCHES
The 24th of October 1994 is the most important date in A. Lange & Söhne’s recent history. It is the day on which company founder Walter Lange and his partner Günter Blümlein presented the first four new-era wristwatches at the Dresden Palace, including the LANGE 1. The asymmetric arrangement of its dial triggered discussions, and its technical facets – such as the outsize date and the twin mainspring barrel – were enthusiastically received. In the beginning, every style-defining design is polarising. This is because it must overcome habitual expectations to unfold its aesthetic appeal. The LANGE 1 is a good example. An outsize date and an asymmetric dial layout paired with a lavishly finished mechanical calibre – in the mid 1990s, this was deemed a provocation by many people. But the unusual design attracted considerable attention and made A. Lange & Söhne famous again overnight.

MEN’S PASSION
The historic event that put A. Lange & Söhne back on the map of international precision watch-making in 1994 is recalled in the anniversary year of 2019 with a collection of different models in white gold that pay tribute to the key milestones of the LANGE 1 watch family. The hallmarks they share are an argenté-coloured dial in solid silver with printed deep-blue numerals and hour markers, blue date numerals, and a colour-coordinated blue alligator leather strap with a grey seam. The LANGE 1 marks the kick-off of the “25th Anniversary” series: it has been crafted virtually unchanged since 1994. Its movement is what reflects its technical evolution. The manually wound calibre L121.1 introduced in 2015 includes a precisely jumping outsize date display and a freely oscillating Lange balance spring. Paired with a large cam-poised balance, it assures superb rate accuracy.
WATCHES
The opulently finished movement – as was the case with the first LANGE 1 calibre L901.0 – features a twin mainspring barrel with a power reserve of 72 hours as well as typical Lange quality hallmarks. Noteworthy elements are the three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver, eight screwed gold chatons, and the hand-engraved balance cock. It exhibits a very special engraving: the outsize date with a “25” that symbolises the 25th anniversary. The manually executed lines of the new engraving pattern are blued for the first time and thus stand out with a particularly rich contrast. The LANGE 1 “25th Anniversary”, limited to 250 watches, has another prominent feature: the engraved hinged cuvette crafted from solid white gold. The engraving depicts the Lange headquarters that date back to 1873, the names of Walter Lange and Günter Blümlein, and a relief engraving of the inscription “25 YEARS LANGE 1”.

Les Mécaniques Sauvages Vacheron Constantin unveils a stunning assortment of one-ofa-kind Les Cabinotiers timepieces
Vacheron Constantin has just unveiled an exclusive assortment of one-ofa-kind models created by its Les Cabinotiers department. The power of the majestic wild animals adorning the dials and cases reflects the potency the stunning work involved in associating the watchmaking expertise of Grand Complications with the mastery of Artistic Crafts. The strength of a bird of prey or a reptile, and the panache of a feline, convey the values of the Maison: tradition and innovation, craftsmanship, hand finishing, extreme care for details, as well as elegance. Through this eloquent mode of expression in which it excels, Vacheron Constantin reinterprets each animal family, from savannah to jungle, earth to sky, myth to reality. A universe that will naturally inspire the bespoke orders that are the essence of Les Cabinotiers. Les Cabinotiers stands for one-of-a-kind bespoke technical, aesthetic and artistic challenges. Across three centuries, Vacheron Constantin has been perpetuating the tradition of “Les Cabinotiers”, the name given to the prestigious and cultivated watchmakers who exercised their art in light-filled workshops located on the top floors of Geneva buildings. Exceptional bespoke timepieces were devised at the time, brimming with a rare degree of technical and aesthetic complexity, inspired by astronomy, science and art. Today, Vacheron Constantin continues to take up these highly technical and incredibly creative challenges through offering its customers one-of-a-kind models, as well as specially commissioned bespoke watches. Engineers, designers, master watchmakers and artisans combine their imagination, their expertise and their passion in giving life to this embodiment of horological expertise and extreme refinement. Humming to the beat of a minute repeater or an armillary tourbillon, and embellished with enamelling, engraving and marquetry, “Les Mécaniques Sauvages” spring to vibrant life, gaze sharpened and instinct heightened, ready to leap into action. Les Cabinotiers 2755: the strength of a bird of prey springs to life through engraving Horological expertise takes the form of seven complications, including a rare type of minute repeater equipped with a centripetal system enabling both effective sound diffusion and a 55-hour power reserve. Intaglio fine line and pounced ornament engraving techniques bring depth and light to this creation. Mastering these techniques requires at least ten years of experience. They vividly highlight the determination, courage and strength of the eagle, whose visual acuity is reproduced in its piercing gaze. teamed with the instinct of a three-dimensional reptile Six patents have been filed for this exceptional timepiece equipped with a double retrograde armillary tourbillon, derived from the Reference 57260 watch with its 57 complications. High-tech materials such as silicon for the pallet-lever and escape-wheel, as well as aluminium for the tourbillon carriage, further enhance the precision and durability of this timepiece and lend a light touch. The patience of the engraving artisans and their love of fine workmanship are clearly apparent in the engraving work on the snake surrounding the caseband. The Maison’s signature hand finishes have served to craft the model, highlighting the matt and brilliant surfaces punctuating the dial, giving life to the scales of the animal. The art of suggestion is extremely subtle, since the precision of the visible portion enables the observer to imagine the reptile in its entirety. Les Cabinotiers Tourbillon 14-days Lion: feline panache and the flamboyance of Grand Feu enamel In this majestic model, the harmonious centrally aligned dial composition echoes the serenity radiating from the lion calmly surveying his surroundings. The fine strokes enable a realistic portrayal of the scene. The horological power of this model – featuring a Maltese cross-shaped tourbillon as well as a 14day power reserve – evokes that of the noble beast it depicts, by conveying a sense of both strength and endurance. This technical combination is matched by a particularly tricky combination of skills: the case is engraved, while the dial is coated with grisaille enamel. This technique consists in coating the gold plate with a uniform dark brown layer and, after firing in the kiln, in applying an extremely rare type of white Grand Feu enamel known as “Blanc de Limoges”, in order to endow the material with subtle shades of grey, brown and white, as well as creating shading effects. The spectacular work of the master enameller is a fascinating invitation to contemplate this masterly animal.

Since it first appeared in 1998, it has become both a mainstay of the collection and inextricably linked with the Rado story - as well as playing a starring role on the case of the new 2018 DiaMaster Petite Seconde Automatic COSC. Only Rado has thought to combine scratch-resistant and durable plasma high-tech ceramic with a material known for its elasticity: silicon. It is this natural, light and hard- wearing material placed at the heart of the new DiaMaster Petite Seconde in the form of the hairspring that has helped this new model achieve its enviable COSC certification for precision. The silicon hairspring means the Petite Seconde automatic movement is more impervious to shocks and capable of greater accuracy over time, features essential for maintaining the utmost precision in a world where everyday interference can affect the performance of a watch. Oris Dive Control Limited Edition Built for professionals
Oris dives deep into their repertoire of watchmaking genius to craft the Dive Control Limited Edition, an evolutionary progression on the independent Swiss company’s highperformance ProDiver watch, made for professional divers. The watch has a 51mm case cast in lightweight Grade 2 titanium and coated in highly scratch-resistant black DLC. It features the Oris-patented Rotation Safety System, or RSS, a signature Oris device that securely locks the uni-directional rotating bezel in place during a dive. The new watch also features a 60-minute chronograph counter at 12 o’clock, with key detailing in highly legible yellow. Only 500 will be made. Built for professionals The Oris Dive Control Limited Edition was developed in partnership with Roman Frischknecht, a Swiss commercial diver who spends his working life deep underwater, servicing the subsea industry. Working with Roman, Oris developed the patented Rotation Safety System, or RSS, which features on every ProDiver and is designed to lock a watch’s diving bezel securely in place during a dive. This innovative device has become an Oris signature. The watch has a number of features that elevate it above standard diver’s watches. First, it has an oversized 51 mm case that’s cast in lightweight, black DLC-coated Grade 2 titanium and that’s waterresistant to 100 bar (1,000 metres). In testing, Oris’s engineers actually pressure tested the Dive Control Limited Edition to an astonishing 125 bar to ensure it would perform in the most demanding conditions. To maximize legibility, the dial is oversized, too. The bezel, complete with the RSS system, has a scratch and fade-resistant ceramic top ring. The hands, hour markers and zero marker on the bezel are all filled with Super-LumiNova®. Oris’s designers have used highcontrast yellow details to indicate critical information because yellow is one of the most visible colors underwater. It also has an automatic helium escape valve, a device useful to Roman and his colleagues who live in heliox atmosphere during a saturation dive. Helium atoms are smaller than atoms of oxygen and can enter a watch. Without the escape valve to release these particles, they could damage the watch once the diver reaches regular air pressure again.
WATCHES
Safety comes first ‘In the companies I work for, safety standards are high and the equipment very reliable. Commercial diving has become one of the most safety conscious professions in the world,’ says Roman Frischknecht. That might be hard to comprehend for those of us who work on terra firma, but when it comes to his work, Roman doesn’t deal in halfcertainties. The safety of each member of the diving team is paramount. Their equipment is state-of-the-art, designed to keep them safe in extreme conditions and maintained regularly to ensure performs reliably. Roman applied the same rigor to the development of the Oris ProDiver’s signature feature, the Rotation Safety System. Oris worked with Roman during two years of development to deliver a uni-directional rotating bezel (a device used to measure dive time) that can be locked securely into place during a dive. So critical is time measurement and management in every aspect of diving, that there is no room for error. By locking a bezel in place, he can be sure of exactly how much time he has left on his dive. Oris has patented this innovation and the Oris ProDiver is the only watch in the world to carry the function. ‘A uni-directional rotating bezel is a great tool, but if it doesn’t move once it’s fixed, it gives a diver extra peace of mind when timing a dive’, explains Roman. In addition, the watch’s Swiss Made automatic chronograph movement gives it central seconds, 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph hands. The 30-minute chronograph hand has a yellow counter balance that reads off against a yellow scale, extending it to a full 60-minute display. This way reading as well as calculation errors can be avoided and safety thus increases. For a professional diver, this is exactly what comes first.

Loewe Inspired by utopian view of the great outdoors
The British writer and naturalist Robert McFarlane wrote in his book The Old Ways that, “Anyone who lives in a city will know the feeling of having been there too long.” The obvious antidote to this urban malaise is to switch off and head into the great outdoors. With that in mind, LOEWE launches a permanent line of functional essentials for men. Style preview The Ready-to-Wear collection and accessories are designed for nature. WISE Investing with Gulf Bank
While investing isn’t an exact science, there are some ways to stack the odds in your favor. Unfortunately, far too often, novice and seasoned investors alike make investment mistakes. Now there are some mistakes that you can quickly brush off, and then there are the kick-yourself, stayup-all-night-worrying types of mistakes that can cost you big time.
BANKING
With that in mind, here’s a look at four investor snafus that can’t easily be forgiven but can be avoided with Gulf Bank’s WISE Investments. Gulf Bank is the first bank in Kuwait to launch a digital investment service. WISE Investments provides Gulf Bank clients with the opportunity to invest in international markets in an easy, transparent and cost-efficient way. Let’s see how… Not Doing Your Due Diligence Rewind ten years and the investment world was reeling over one of the largest Ponzi schemes in history, when Bernard Madoff scammed billions out of unsuspecting clients. Many of the investors whom he took for a ride weren’t of moderate means, nor were they ignorant when it came to investing. The mistake they all shared was not doing their due diligence before investing with Madoff. It’s human nature to get swept up in promises of high returns and glowing word-of-mouth recommendations from friends, but for every investor who gave Madoff money, there were those who questioned his projections and returns and wisely decided not to do business with him. Whether you’re thinking of investing in a stock, bond or mutual fund or with a particular money manager, you have to do your due diligence. As Madoff clients learned, blindly trusting someone without following up on their statements can be extremely costly. Paying Too Much in Investment Fees Investors have long accepted that they will have to pay fees when investing in the international stock markets. What they might not realize is that if they pay too much in fees, it can have a big impact on their investments. One problem with investment fees is that they aren’t easily visible to investors. That’s why it’s important to learn about the fees out there and ask your advisor or broker what they charge. As with most things in life, you’ll have to be your own investment fee advocate. Leaving Money on the Table There are two sure things in modern life: death and taxes. And when it comes to taxes, not paying attention to them when investing will end up costing you. If you have a lot of gains, you can owe the government a lot. Despite that risk, many investors choose to ignore the tax implications of their moves, which can be costly. While reducing taxes shouldn’t be the main reason for making investment decisions, it can be an expensive mistake to ignore the tax consequences of your investment choices. Letting Emotions Drive Investment Decisions Investors are only human, and being human means that your decisions are sometimes influenced by your emotions, whether that’s fear, panic, envy or even complacency. Emotions can drive people to make terrible investment decisions. Take the far-too-common phenomena of buying high and selling low. Any time there’s a big drop in the stock market, some investors will panic and join in the sell-off, only to turn around a couple of weeks later and buy back the stock at a higher price. If they had just waited out the downturn, they would have gotten a much better return than they received by following the crowd selling on the way
down and buying on the way up. Another investor mistake is complacency. When times are good and the stock market is booming, some investors will take it easy and pull back from staying on top of their investments. But letting your guard down can cost you. Take the recent slowdown of the Chinese economy. While signs of China’s slowdown have been slowly emerging, it wasn’t until the situation reached a drastic stage when stocks started to react. Those investors who had stayed on top of the market, even when it was steaming ahead, could have spotted signs of trouble early on and acted accordingly. The Bottom Line It’s hard to avoid making some investment missteps. While even seasoned investors make mistakes, keeping them (and their financial impact) to a minimum will save you a lot. Staying on top of your fees, making sure you’re mindful of the tax consequences of your investment moves and, most importantly, doing your due diligence can go a long way in boosting your overall returns while avoiding costly investment mistakes.

Kuwait Yacht Show 2019 Preview As it prepares to return in March for its 7th edition, the Kuwait Yacht Show looks set to cement its position in the regional yacht show calendar even more firmly than ever. Bigger and better than before, and with a steadily rising profile in the global arena, in conversation with the organisers, alongside photographic memories from 2018, we take a sneak preview of what to expect when the ribbon is cut on the opening night at Marina Crescent in 2019...
SAIL
This is the 7th edition of the Kuwait Yacht Show – what is new for 2019? New models of yachts come to KYS every year, and every year we see more and more requests for larger spaces from clients for their yachts. Today, we host yachts of 70 to 90 feet – when we first launched the show it was around 50 feet. This year we’ll have more activities for family and visitors. These include daily talks on the KYS stage with marine topics and tips. We’ve got a spokesman from the Environment and Public Authority talking about fishing in Kuwait waters, as well as an expert kayaker. We’re running competitions too – one involves casting for fish and has more than 60 participants as well as an opportunity for other visitors to try their hand at it. In a special collaboration with the Kuwait Sailing Association we’re bringing two sailboats to give people a sailing experience during the show. All these, plus many new brands and new dealerships – now a staple we’ve become known for every year. And what are the key and now traditional favourite elements of the KYS that are set to return? The opening night is a highlight, an event not to be missed, but the in-water presentation of boats and yachts is a huge attraction annually now. For anyone who hasn’t seen it before, it’s really quite a sight! We’re known for being the first and best place to see new products. Our diving school is a perpetual favourite. And, finally, this year we’re expanding our F&B area to accommodate more people. Which for you are the key marine brands to look out for in 2019? Any new product launches? Almost too many to name, but it’s a mouth-watering list of the very best from leading global brands including Sunseeker, Azimut (as always), and Princess (they have a local dealer now). Ferretti are working hard to increase market share, and GulfCraft are coming from Dubai with all their new boats. What are the key non-marine brands we can look forward to in 2019? Zain are launching their ZainLife products for smart home functionality at KYS. And, for the first time, KYS has its own official perfume! Acqua dell’Elba will be present with their Italian fragrances inspired by the sea and the Tuscan islands. You’ve returned to Marina Crescent in Salmiya year after year. What’s key about this venue with regard to the success of KYS? It is ideally located in the heart of the city, making it easily accessible to all. It’s a great entertainment hub for all the family. And the staff at marina, as well as the yacht owners who moor their boats there all year round, are familiar with us. We work hand-in-hand with them and they’ve been part of the success of the show. In recent years the marine sector has grown hugely throughout the region, and Kuwait hasn’t been left behind. How do you feel KYS has played a role in the growth of the sector in Kuwait? KYS has had a huge effect on the growth of the sector in Kuwait.

SAIL
We have raised awareness of marine brands and the marine lifestyle amongst the public. Dealers have reported this to us every year, commenting that how being present at the show has given them a window to the wider public of Kuwait. KYS has brought more international brands to Kuwait over the past 7 years than had happened during the previous 20. KYS has boosted not only yachts – but all marine companies. Crucially, we’ve always supported local startups too – we’ve tried to give them a boost by making it easy and commercially accessible to showcase their products at KYS. Many have gone on to become successful companies in their own right.
KYS is a sum of many parts. From the exhibitors right through to the visitors and everything in between. Who are the key partners that add value to the success of this year’s KYS? Our venue partner, Marina Crescent, are prime in this respect. They’re very much involved in every aspect of the show – from planning through to implementation. Having Zain onboard as a partner this year will add great weight to the show. We view all the exhibitors who bring yachts, and all those owners who make space for us every year as key members of our team, along with the governmental entities that help us represent Kuwait in this very fine form every year. The KYS now has Silver Membership of the IFBSO – what does this mean for the show, its exhibitors and its visitors? It is a valuable recognition. Other members of IFBSO include many of the world’s greatest and longest established boat shows including Miami and Dusseldorf. Sitting alongside them now, we’re able to learn from them how to make ourselves even better. Recently, KYS Managing Director Nouf AlHajeri was elected a member of the IFBSO’s Executive Committee. As the first Arab on the committee, this is a great honour to both her and the Kuwait Yacht Show. What are the sustainability credentials of KYS This is something that is becoming uppermost in our minds – as it should for everyone. For 2019 we’re launching initiatives using the hashtag #rethinkplastic. We encourage all those who share our vision for a sustainable world to follow the tag and keep up to date with us the closer we get to the show.

WABU ‘Wood after being used’, that is
We’re going big on sustainability in 2019, and in each issue we’ll feature what we regard as a key initiative in the field. Something that combines the preservation of our planet (yes, it’s that critical these days), with a damned fine design aesthetic. This month, we’re looking at a favourite of ours, Beirut’s WABU, which was established by two of our favourite people – the brother and sister team of Carl and Christelle Bardawil. Coming from a fine woodworking and artisanal background – the family-business is Kitmo, a super-cool wood flooring and kitchen design outfit based on the outskirts of the Lebanese capital. Founded in 1961, the siblings have spent recent years giving the brand a sharp and uber-desirable contemporary design edge. With a social conscience, the two have also added an offshoot of the main business, something they’re calling a ‘vegan brand’ – WABU (wood after being used). What is it? Reclaimed wood, with imperfections preserved, used to create some really useful pieces of furniture. Sustainability credentials? Instead of chopping down trees to make their furniture, WABU search the world for abandoned wood – they’re breathing new life into discarded timber. They’ve gone through their business model from top to bottom, and also ensured the packaging for the selfassembly items is recycled and recyclable. Design credentials? Simple designs, each of which makes a practical and stylish addition to the home of the social and environmentally aware citizen of the world. Recommended.

Jackie Chan’s got the world of private aviation figured out. How about you?
Flying Solo How much time can you save traveling by private jet?
When escaping to exotic climes, how soon we can get there is important. We don’t want long queues or extensive delays. We want speedy travel to get us to where we’re going and to get our break or business meeting underway, hassle-free. If traveling by air, private jets have a reputation for offering a faster service. But is this true? Here is a look at how much time is really saved by flying private.
FLY
Easy Access Private jets are served by over 5,000 airports in America alone. That’s approximately 4,450 more than the number that commercial flights land at in the States. This cuts travel times to airports that fly to where you’re traveling to as you’re sure to find one closer to home.
airport and taking-off, this is whittled down to a matter of minutes for those flying via private jet, with customers rarely having to spend more than 15 minutes going through the check-in process. Getting There
In addition, private means you can be in charge of your own schedule. Should you have an evening event in New York followed by a breakfast meeting in London, you can charter your flight to suit your own plans. By not having to wait around for connecting flights to where you need to be next, you’re saving time that can be spent arranging your next meeting.
Once you’re in the air, things can move faster. Generally, private jets move faster than commercial planes because they are designed with efficiency in mind. So even though not all private jets can fly quicker than commercial, they are flying at higher altitudes so that they can avoid air traffic and follow a route that bypasses any congestion. Also, fuel consumption is not as important as speed, so private flights are more likely to tear through the skies.
Quick Check-In
Straight to Arrivals
When flying to your destination, there are plenty of protocols to go through, even if you’re traveling business class. From immigration and security to baggage check-in and passport control, you’ll spend time queuing before you board.
Like checking-in, the arrivals process is generally a faster and smoother procedure. This is due to factors such as not having to wait for your belongings to trundle along the baggage claim carousel and security proceedings are taken care of on the other side. Plus, the airport you arrive at will likely be at a location that’s convenient to you, so this speeds things up too.
For those flying by private jet, the chances are you’ll also be using a private terminal, too. This means that the check-in process is shorter. In fact, it’s significantly shorter. While it can often take hours between arriving at the

New Start? Do it alone…. Looking for fitness? You are your best inspiration.
Every New Year’s Day signals a string of new year resolutions, and for as long as the desire for fitness remains at the top of everyone’s list, it will remain peak time for new gym memberships. Are you one of those yearning to lose those festive kilos with thoughts turning to Vilebrequin, tote bags and the summer’s beaches? Our hot fitness tip for 2019 puts you front and center of your training regime, and it’s all delivered at the flick of the wrist. What is it? A Fitbit. Wrist-worn trackers have been around for years, and the world has developed a somewhat love-hate relationship with them. We’ve tended to feel the same way – we kind of wanted them to work and be part of our lives but, well, they never quite cemented the relationship. Until now that is…
touchscreen keeps it safe – whatever harsh treatment you’re going to subject it to, you’ll break before your Ionic does, super-sharp graphics, sleep monitor (the best we’ve seen is Fitbit’s algorithm), heart rate and cardio fitness monitoring, plus you can connect a wristload of apps to connect the Ionic with your smartphone.
Enter the Fitbit Ionic and Charge 2 (there’s now a new Charge 3 which, we’ve heard, steps up Fitbit’s game even further). Massive battery life and a host of really-useful-apps combine to make these the essential accessories for fitness tracking, knowledge, and motivation. Hook them up to Fitbit’s own app, and they become super-useful tools. We used its personalized dashboard to check daily stats, see personalized insights and got reminders that kept us moving toward our goals.
In use, it is light on the wrist. If you’re a watch-wearer, you’ll feel an absence of mass. Non-watch-wearers will barely feel its presence. To get the best out of the Ionic, as well as all of Fitbit’s trackers, wear it 24/7 - be aware that some models are water-resistant, meaning you could probably shower in it, but we wouldn’t recommend it – however, sleeping with it is essential in building a full wellness-story for you. We haven’t worn a watch at night since our teenage and Casio years, so while the first two or three nights felt disturbed, it was worth persisting.
The Ionic provides deeply personalized guidance and insights; plus, you can upload your favorite music to keep the legs pumping and muscles flexing. Other headlines? Built-in GPS makes it ideal for recording routes (on foot as well as in the saddle), a Gorilla Glass
Sleep is perhaps the most important and yet overlooked element to any fitness regime. Ionic helps you better understand your sleep quality by using PurePulse® heart rate to track your time spent in light, deep and REM sleep stages. It’s good. Very good. While the Ionic didn’t send
WELLNESS
us to sleep, the information we gained did train us to be more aware of bed- and waking-times. After a month, we’re waking feeling more refreshed than before. Fact. Heart-rate monitors are simple fare for all trackers today. It’s how the information harvested is used that sets quality above the average. Fitbit’s enabled us to learn how our cardiovascular health and fitness progressed by tracking our resting heart rate and following heart rate trends over time. We got a better understanding of our cardio fitness level and learned how to improve over time with a personalized Cardio Fitness Score. Women can use Ionic with the Fitbit app to log their period and record symptoms, track ovulation and discover patterns in their cycle. As men, we imagine this can only be a good thing. And what of the Charge 2? Effectively, it’s a stripped-down Ionic. Gone is the big, color screen. In its place is a sharply-defined monochrome screen. Data only. There’s no significant smartphone connection, although you can set it up to receive notifications of calls and texts. There’s no storage or playback for music either. The Charge 2 is a no-nonsense tracker for the hardcore fitness freak. Via the app, you’ll get the data an Ionic provides, but without its bellsand-whistles – and in many ways, it’s all the better for it. Fewer buttons to press (there’s only one) and a single tap-screen facility means you strap it on at the beginning of the day and forget about it until it needs recharging (three or four days, minimum) – but don’t take a bath wearing it. It links to the same powerful app as all Fitbits and gives the same
feedback and notifications as the Ionic. You can access much of the information via a few taps of the screen, but in reality, you’ll find yourself popping open your smartphone, synching, and bringing yourself up-to-date there. You can set both models to give you a prompt if you’ve spent too long sedentary. Sounds uninteresting? In fact, it’s a great way to draw you away from whichever screen you’re looking at, walk around the office, getting the blood flowing again, and catch up with one or two colleagues using the real face-time facility nature gave us. Use it. You’ll be surprised. Who are they for? Well, while we excel in some areas, athleticism isn’t one of these. Nonetheless, we’re fearlessly motivated and on an endless quest for information that’s going to make our lives more productive and efficient. The Ionic and Charge 2 proved to be our ideal friends. A stream of reliable information fed into our motivation to continue along our road to health and fitness. It kept us connected (to our smartphones) and engaged (with our bodies). There are few pieces of tech that have worked for us (rather than having us work for them) in such an intuitive, empowering and approachable manner. Set goals, and these two buddies will keep you on the road to fitness or weight-loss. They’ve a huge range of accessories for when you get hooked. It’s like having a trainer with you 24/7. But this is one you can turn off and walk away from on a Friday night. Fitbit tip: they’ve also got a really useful blog. Useful whether you’re a Fitbit wearer or not.
