THE UNEXPECTED

Dear Passionate Readers, Analysts always tell you what to expect... And those who love you warn you against the unexpected... Yet, if I were to define my life in a single phrase, it would be ‘a series of unexpected events’. And when things go as expected ….. well, in all honesty, I find it boring and uninspiring... I have always loved how children react when faced with the unexpected… And I guess that child still lives in me... May it still be living in you, my Passionate Readers. And may your life always be filled with the excitement and thrill of the unexpected. Till the next issue,

COVER STORY

“DAGLA (meaning) – a long, winter jacket, highly popular 60 years ago and a sign of ultimate luxury” DAGLA opened its first store in 2012 and, with a passion to make national dress relevant once again, has since opened four more in Kuwait. Based on the pure principle of focusing on the finest details, Abdullah Al Essa and Abdul Ghafour Tfouni have built an enviable reputation for highlighting quality while respecting tradition. We met Abdullah Aleisa to learn more. What was the lightbulb moment? What inspired you? Over ten years ago I was sitting with my partner, and we were talking about how we like to change the status quo. We were reflecting how traditional clothing has been with us forever, and how the experience hasn’t changed. At that moment we decided to do something about it – to upgrade and update things. We talked it through, and immediately decided that it was something we must do. I’m driven by the aim of raising the quality of living – in any way. With DAGLA, we’re addressing our culture, our heritage, our men – all the right elements when it comes to redefining the way we live today. We were pioneers then, and are today.

to that. We introduced a lot of designs, and initiated a lot of collaborations – using local talent where we can. We inspired the creation of nice pieces that are balance the tradition with the contemporary – it’s a fine line. How often do you come up with contemporary designs? It changes every season. In fashion, you have to be ahead of the game. In our first three years we created similar designs and demand started to grow. Then innovation kicked in. I think we’ve created a beautiful impact and also created a demand for something that wasn’t in the market before us. Where, other than your boutiques, is DAGLA currently available? What are your future plans in this regard? We have five boutiques. We opened our first in 2012 – it was and still is a small space yet highly frequented in Dahiat Abdullah AlSalem. Today our flagship store is in Blockat. Furthermore, people may call, book an appointment and we can visit them at their home or office. But this is not the essence of DAGLA. The essence is living the experience by visiting us in tore – the same as with any designer… Gucci, Prada… the experience is gained by visiting the designer at home. It’s the same with us.

What is your aim? We guess it’s to contemporize on the traditional. How? It is not as simple as contemporizing the traditional – we have two elements. The first element is to create a quality experience – so, it’s the same thing, but through better quality. A better quality of thread, a better quality of stitching, a better quality of buttons, a better quality in measuring. It’s all about quality. A detailed finish. It saddened us to see the way men were dressing, what they were accepting as being ‘right’.

Our current plans include a move from our tailoring roots to become a retailer – we’re focusing on creating a brand. From being a tailor, we’re remodelling to become stores where customers can buy everything that relates to the style they want to be dressed in including shoes, accessories and bags. In the future we’ll be ready-to-wear as well as tailored… and it’s happening as we speak! We’re aiming to compete on an international level.

Are you exploring new fabrics and construction techniques? Always. We started with traditional fabrics, and then kept adding

We’re also creating an online store to cater to men’s fashion buying in general. Effectively, this will be our sixth store.

“We’re preserving a tradition by making it relevant today” What are the key details that define a quality dishdasha? It starts by taking the correct measurements, and by the tailor understanding what is right. There is a standard – there are correct proportions. Then we move to cutting – this must be handled by a master cutter with great experience. Very few people can take this ‘recipe’ of numbers and create an actual garment that fits and works and looks right. He’s like our executive chef. The right stitching is critical – everyone notices poor stitching. Good stitching needs the best skills and the best machines – we have both. We also give time to the process – it can’t be hurried. Then the finishing – the buttons, the collar, the cuffs. If we’ve done it right, it will always look right and feel right on the owner.

find a dishdasha they can wear for every occasion – this is what we are tapping in to. We’re preserving a tradition by making it relevant today.

All of these we can still address through ready-made, at least to some extent, even though there may be compromises to make. Through our experience, we can gauge what are typical standard sizes, and we understand fully the correct proportions. We can tailor ready-to-wear products with excellent accuracy and fit.

When not dressed by DAGLA, what will we find you in? To be honest, I’m sure that as time passes and our retail collection grows, 80% of what I wear is from DAGLA. It’s a lifestyle. Outside that, I dress casually.

What is your feeling about traditional dress in today’s world? When and where should it be worn? I believe traditional dress can be worn every day of the week. However, until now we haven’t received the opportunity to do so. At DAGLA, we create dishdashas of many forms – from casual to formal and everything in between. There is a huge demand from people to

Now a little about your life and style… Other than the way a man dresses, what are the key identifiers of his style? I’m a big fan of integrating your personal attributes in to how a man showcases himself to people. Whatever that takes. There’s no standard recipe. Build up accessories that reflect who you are and how you feel about yourself. It’s an individual process.

In general, how well does the Kuwaiti man adapt to fashion and adopt new styles? They’re ahead of the game. They’re daring, they’re trying new things. They’re always on top of what’s new on an international level. There’s no question, we are early adopters and are happy to push the styleenvelope. This is something that we should take credit for. We’re aiming to see the same bravery in the area of the dishdasha!

What is your earliest memory? Jumping on my parents’ bed with scissors in my hand. I was only two and half years of age and ended up hurting myself in the chest and was rushed to the hospital. As such, later in my life, it was quite serendipitous when scissors became part of my life and career!

What is your guiltiest pleasure? My biggest pleasure is to travel. But I feel no guilt when I do!

What is your most treasured possession? I’m not attached to material possessions. I could lose everything and still be happy. Having said that, I do love my ski boots – skiing is an essential part of my life.

How do you relax? Meditating, or simply being at home with my family.

What is the trait you most admire in yourself? I try to always be in synch with people and the world around me. What is the trait you most admire in others? Honesty. What would your super power be? Peace-maker.

How would you like to be remembered? I truly don’t care to be remembered. While I’m alive I want to make a change and improve people’s lives. Whether they choose to remember me won’t be my concern after I’m gone. By then, it’ll all be about the next generation.

SIHH and Baselworld Will coordinate their dates from 2020

This partnership marks a significant breakthrough for the watchmaking industry From 2020, the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva (SIHH) and Baselworld in Basel, the two major events in the watch industry, will synchronise their calendars. In 2020, the SIHH will be held from 26 to 29 April in Geneva, followed immediately by Baselworld from 30 April to 5 May in Basel. The calendars have been synchronised until 2024.

THE WATCH EDITION

The coinciding of these dates is good news for the whole industry. Until now, the SIHH took place in January, while Baselworld was held in March. This arrangement meant that the professionals, press, and clients shared by large watchmaking brands would have to travel to Switzerland twice in the space of just a few weeks. This calendar now coming closer together will be effective as of 2020 onwards. Fabienne Lupo, President and Managing Director of the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, which organises SIHH, stated: “Our two events have always been different, yet complementary. Resynching with Baselworld will further confirm Switzerland as the foremost destination for watchmaking in the world. This is something we welcome wholeheartedly, as it is in the interests of all.”

“Baselworld and the SIHH are working for the industry and its clients. We have sought dialogue with the SIHH and together have found a solution, which benefits visitors, the media, and the entire watchmaking industry enormously”, declared Michel Loris-Melikoff, Managing Director of Baselworld. “This partnership between the two most prominent exhibitions in the industry represents a major breakthrough for the future.” A partnership that works for the industry For visitors attending both events, and in particular those from other continents, these agreed dates will make their trips to Switzerland far easier. This important and essential breakthrough for the Swiss watchmaking industry is also welcomed by major players in the sector.

Omega’s Seamaster Diver 300m Limited Edition

In 2018, the iconic Seamaster Diver 300M collection was reborn with a dynamic new look and technical standard. Now, OMEGA is proudly welcoming a new Limited Edition model that carries that same design excellence as well as an important link to the past.

THE WATCH EDITION

It was the original Seamaster Diver 300M in 1993 that introduced the unique metal known as tantalum. Most commonly used in electronics and medical equipment, tantalum is a lustrous bluegrey metal that is more rare than gold, harder than steel, and highly corrosion-resistant. It is also particularly difficult to work with, adding to its rare use within the watch industry. The distinctive colour of tantalum worked perfectly within the revolutionary Seamaster Diver 300M watch design and became a popular attribute of that original release. Today, OMEGA has reintroduced the metal for this special model limited to 2,500 pieces.

Freak neXt Xplore. Xcite. Xist.

The latest model in the iconic “FREAK” collection, the “FREAK neXt” watch marks a new technical feat for Ulysse Nardin. This prototype watch, a showcase for Ulysse Nardin’s technological expertise and the flexible silicium blade technology in particular, sets the tone for a new generation of FREAK models to come, where innovation is taken to the Xtreme. Discover this new chapter in the Freak collection, combining all the most iconic innovations of the FREAK VISION model with an extraordinary new 3D flying oscillator! At a press conference held beneath the minimalistic curves of London’s Serpentine Gallery, in the presence of Patrick Pruniaux, the watch brand’s CEO and Stéphane Von Gunten, Research and Innovation Director, Ulysse Nardin unveiled its latest concept watch, the FREAK neXt: a concentrate of technologies in the same spirit as past innovations. Ulysse Nardin has been at the cutting edge of watchmaking since its foundation in 1846. Technological exploration is more than a method, it is a philosophy, a raison d’être, a daily driving force. With the new FREAK neXt concept watch, the Swiss manufacture proves that the adventurous spirit of the FREAK collection is very much alive and driving Ulysse Nardin’s technical departments more than ever. The new FREAK neXt is the current quintessence of all the technical and watchmaking skills of the Ulysse Nardin Manufacture, unveiling an oscillator of truly spectacular design. WHAT’S NEXT? So what’s the latest from the depths of Ulysse Nardin’s new “laboratory on the wrist”? After 10 years of continued research, development and improvements in collaboration with Sigatec – a firm co-owned by Ulysse Nardin that specializes in the production of silicium micro-components – the Manufacture is now in a position to present what appears to be the pinnacle of a paradigm shift in mechanical watchmaking that began in 2015 with the Ulysse Anchor flying escapement: the new neXt flying oscillator.

THE WATCH EDITION

THE “NEXT” FLYING OSCILLATOR AND ITS 3D DESIGN First came Ulysse Nardin’s flying tourbillon and flying anchor escapement. Now, we present the flying oscillator! “The balance wheel regulates even better as it has a great moment of inertia and performs rapid oscillations of great amplitude.” Léopold Defossez That is precisely the challenge that the new FREAK neXt has successfully taken on. Toying with the limits of the physics of materials, the new Freak neXt flying oscillator presents an entirely innovative 3D design. Based on flexible mechanisms using the elasticity of silicium blades, a principle that is truly mastered by Ulysse Nardin, this oscillating regulating device does away with the central pivot, its center literally suspended in mid-air. The central idea of this regulating organ is to totally eliminate the axis of the balance wheel in order to create a virtual pivot point. This is a radical development that hugely improves the traditional principle of balance spring regulation introduced in the 17th century. The neXt flying oscillator, with its 3D multi-layer construction – four layers of blades and a solid layer that serves as a flywheel – is a highly significant technological development for watchmaking research. This new oscillator eliminates the necessity for pivots and jewels. The new FREAK features a “suspended” beating heart that “levitates” without a balance-cock (balance bridge). The direct result of this system is none other than the total elimination of friction on the bearings, optimizing the global quality factor and therefore the movement’s energy consumption. The only remaining friction is with the air. No more – or very little – friction, no more contact, no more wear, no more oil. Made up of 32 silicium micro-blades measuring 16 micrometers in width, connected to one another without contact with the mainplate – forming 16 triangles superimposed in 4 parallel layers – the oscillator beats to a highly efficient frequency of 12 Hz, for a remarkable 70-hour power reserve. The frequency has been multiplied by 3 while at the same time increasing the power reserve by 30%. This incredible technical feat is made possible thanks to the elimination of friction, particularly given the fact that the energy consumption depends on the frequency, cubed (if the frequency is doubled, the consumption is multiplied by 8). But this major innovation comes as no surprise. It is the last stage in a decade of developments for FREAK concept watches at Ulysse Nardin with the 2014 launch of the Ulysse Anchor escapement, followed by the Grinder, also fitted with blades, presented in 2017 on the Freak InnoVision 2 model.

26 27

MEN’S PASSION

ABOUT THE ULYSSE ANCHOR ESCAPEMENT The Ulysse Anchor escapement is based on the principle of flexible mechanisms using the elasticity of leaf springs. This constant escapement, made entirely of silicium, presents a circular frame with a fixed anchor at its center that pivots without friction. It is held in the air by two tiny silicium leaves, perpendicular to one another, which are tensioned in order to bend and maintain them in a bistable state. The result is a positive energy balance during the angle of lift that maintains constant oscillations of the balance without being influenced by the variations of the engine torque. ABOUT THE GRINDER The self-winding “Grinder” system has revolutionized energy transmission as it is twice as efficient as existing systems. The “Grinder” uses the smallest of wrist movements. The oscillating weight is connected to a frame carrying four clicks or blades, which gives the self-winding system twice the angular stroke (like a bicycle fitted with four pedals instead of two). A flexible guiding mechanism considerably limits friction. SPACE-INSPIRED DESIGN & EXTRA WHITE MINIMALISM A true architectural gem, the FREAK neXt has a high-tech, ultra-contemporary look. It is in immaculate white with phosphorescent touches, applied by Ulysse Nardin’s designers to highlight their latest invention. The bridge of the baguette movement (the finishing gear train) has a slightly trapezoidal shape inspired by the spaceships from Star Wars, and is framed by four luminescent tubes filled with Superluminova for a phosphorescence effect that is visible only at night. A small logo in the colors of Ulysse Nardin – positioned on a transparent lens made from glass using a subtractive 3D production process – completes the decoration of the baguette movement. Contrasting with the celestial purity of the dominant white, the 3D multilayer oscillator is chameleon-like: depending on the angle from which it is viewed, it presents glistening blue, purple or green reflections. The new FREAK neXt comes with a white Superluminova bezel, white

THE WATCH EDITION

Superluminova shafts at the sides, as well as a white automatic winding support on the back of the watch. The rubber strap is also white with white stitching and dark blue “point-de-bride” stitches. Evoking purity, simplicity and minimalism, the FREAK neXt is dressed in platinum and titanium. This watch, which is not available for sale, demonstrates the brand’s commitment to extending and enriching its collection by taking its watchmaking eXpertise to the next level. This is a watch whose call of adventure will tempt any self-respecting modern-day Ulysses. The highly sophisticated mechanism, which will be incorporated into commercial products by the end of the year, opens up new, unexplored horizons for Ulysse Nardin. NEXT IS FOR... X FACTOR In the New Year, Ulysse Nardin added the “X factor” to its collections and watchmaking. The first letter in the name of the popular Xbox, showing where to sign in legal documents, the symbol of a chromosome, a generation, an intersection, multiplication, marking the spot on treasure maps: the 24th letter of the alphabet lets the imagination run wild. X represents the unknown, unspecified or variable factor. X is for eXploration, eXtraordinary, eXcess, eXperience, eXcitement, eXtreme and compleX. More than just a slogan, it is a declaration, reminding us of the boldness and creativity embodied by the new FREAK neXt. FREAK VISION The FREAK neXt is not the only new model introduced to the FREAK family. Today, the FREAK VISION is dressed in new clothes: black (in titanium) or pink gold – satin-brushed or polished. The first selfwinding watch in the collection showcases the revolutionary innovations unveiled by Ulysse Nardin with its “InnoVision 2” concept watch. The most significant include an ultra-light silicium balance felloe with nickel inertia-blocks and stabilizing micro-blades, and a new case, topped with a box-domed sapphire crystal.

Time to act Aquis Date Relief Oris and expedition swimmer Ernst Bromeis go their own way

Oris and expedition swimmer Ernst Bromeis are going their own way to raise awareness of the importance of water, with the release of the Oris Aquis Date Relief, a high-quality diver’s watch. For many years, Oris has been campaigning to protect and conserve the world’s oceans as part of a mission to bring change for the better. But we continue to see signs that there is so much work still to do. Together with our customers and retail and media partners, we want to bring meaningful change to the state of the world’s water. In that vein, we are proud to introduce the Oris Aquis Date Relief into our collection of high performance Aquis diver’s watches, and a new partnership with the expedition swimmer and water ambassador Ernst Bromeis. Ernst took the Oris Aquis Date Relief to Lake Baikal with photographer Maurice Haas for a preparation swim ahead of his 2019 project ‘The Blue Miracle’, which will see him swim across a number of lakes, including Lake Baikal, the world’s largest freshwater lake, to raise awareness of the world’s water. The Oris Aquis Date Relief is inspired by the colour and feeling of water. The grey dial recalls the colour of a stormy sea, while the watch’s signature diving scale numerals in relief are a reminder of the texture of water, as well as its elemental role in all life. The watch shares its architecture and performance values with the Oris Aquis Date. It has a 43.50 mm (1.713 inches) stainless steel case with a uni-directional rotating diver’s bezel and is water-resistant to 30 bar (300 metres). It comes on a choice of straps or a metal bracelet, and its sapphire crystal sits over a dial decorated with applied hour markers, which, like the hour and minutes hands, are filled with luminescent Super-LumiNova®. Its Swiss Made automatic mechanical movement provides it with a central second’s hand – in urgent red – and a date, seen through a window at 6 o’clock. Oris and Ernst are going their own way through this project to educate thousands of people about the need to conserve the world’s water – before it’s too late. The shape of water Water sustains all life. Oris works with non-profit organizations to bring change and is increasing its efforts to educate the world about the challenges facing our water. Just how bad is the situation facing the world’s rivers, seas and oceans? And how much does it matter to the world’s population? Some of the statistics are stark. According to the World Health Organization, 3.4 million people die every year as a result of preventable water-related diseases, most of them children. The Pacific Institute, a global water think tank, reports that in developing countries, an estimated 90 per cent of sewage and 70 per cent of industrial waste is discharged into waterways without any treatment at all.

THE WATCH EDITION

And news reports detail stories of dead sea creatures found with stomachs full of plastic. While much is being done to improve the quality of the world’s waters, there are fears that the scale of the problem is only just becoming apparent. We must act now – before it’s too late. Oris continues to work with nonprofit organizations on projects that bring real change. In the last few years, we’ve worked with the Coral Restoration Foundation to replant coral; with Pelagios Kakunjá to protect endangered shark species; and with conservationists looking to secure UNESCO World Heritage Site status and protection for Clipperton Island, the world’s most remote atoll, which sits on a critical migration route for a number of threatened species. Oris has also introduced a watch strap made from a material called r-Radyarn®, which is produced from post-consumer recycled polymer in a process that requires significantly less energy and water than conventional manufacturing methods. But there is much more we want to do, can do and will do. One of the benefits of Oris’s independence is being able to respond quickly to customers’ needs. But it also means we can go our own way and make high-impact choices that deliver change that makes a measurable difference. The Oris Aquis Date Relief and our mission to Lake Baikal with expedition swimmer Ernst Bromeis is the next step in a journey towards a future where the world is full of clean water. The Blue Miracle Expedition swimmer and Oris ambassador Ernst Bromeis plans to swim 800 km across Lake Baikal as part of his new global water awareness campaign.

32 33

MEN’S PASSION

Ernst, tell us what you do and why. I’m an expedition swimmer. I’ve swum the greatest lakes in Switzerland and the length of the Rhine, more than 1,200 km. I’m also a water ambassador, meaning I try to bring the fundamental importance of water to people. My new global water campaign is searching for new water ambassadors to increase reach and awareness. It’s time to act! What is ‘The Blue Miracle’? It’s a project I founded, inspired by the planet viewed from space, which looks like a blue marble and for me a blue miracle. Every life on our blue planet is based on water. What’s behind the Lake Baikal swim? In 2019, I’ll start my global water campaign, which should reach the whole world. Lake Baikal is the world’s largest and deepest freshwater lake. Locals call it ‘the holy sea’ or ‘the source of the world’. How far have you swum on Baikal? During my research I swam short distances. It was more about looking for a relationship with the ‘holy sea’. And I found it! I also met the locals, including Sascha, a fisherman. He said: ‘You can’t swim this lake. It’s too dangerous. Too stormy. Too cold.’ But it’s ok. Water temperatures in the summer will be about 12 degrees. Things like what he said keep me motivated to find my own way. What impact have your swims had so far? I don’t have an objective statistic. This is about touching people – that’s the basic principle behind getting change started. Are your swims ever dangerous? There is always danger in the open water and I’m often afraid. I could drown every time. Swimming the Rhine I came across strong currents, rocks, huge ships and factories lining the shore. I felt small and vulnerable. I was once saved by a boat when I swam too close to some hydraulic power turbines. What threats to water have you witnessed? During my Lake Baikal research I saw a lot of bottles, plastic and other trash. The threats you can’t see are maybe the bigger tragedy – all the pesticides, hormones, micro plastics and medicines in the water. Each year the Rhine is contaminated with 30 tons of micro plastic. How do we solve the plastics problem? The more news, the better – we need way more information about this topic. We have to take responsibility for our way of life, our lifestyle. Create bottle free zones with your freshwater from the tap. Don’t take a shower or a bath every day. This way you can save water and energy – and your money.

THE WATCH EDITION

Why did you choose to work with Oris? Oris is an authentic and freedom-loving brand. Oris and I have similar attitudes and values. We are both going our own way, inspired by beauty and simplicity, and by the basics of life. How did the Oris Aquis Date Relief perform? During my research in Siberia, the Oris Aquis Relief worked well. I’m convinced that it will also do a great job during the Baikal Expedition swim. I trust in Oris’s work and art. The Other Side Of The Lens Legendary photographer Maurice Haas covered Ernst Bromeis’s Lake Baikal preparation swim. Here, he explains why he got involved. Maurice, tell us a bit about yourself. I’m a child of the 1970s and I grew up in the beautiful Swiss mountain town of Chur. How did you get into photography? I often used to take pictures of friends when we were snowboarding in the winter and skateboarding on the streets in summer. After I graduated from school, I started an apprenticeship with a local architecture firm, but at the same time I started developing film and doing my own black and white prints. And I just got hooked. After I finished my apprenticeship and a spell in the army, I got a job as Hannes Schmid’s assistant and travelled the world with him. It was tough, but I loved it, and in 2001 I stepped out on my own and became a full-time photographer. When you’re behind the camera, what are you looking to capture? I try to capture moments that are bare and honest. I always try to be quiet, yet ready. It’s about what happens in between – that’s where the moment is. I try and transport a feeling. I’m always trying. How did you meet Ernst and why did you sign up to his Baikal Expedition project? I first met and shot Ernst about six years ago and we had an immediate connection. I’ve always been in awe of him and what he stands for. When he asked me to go to Baikal with him, I didn’t hesitate for a second. His message is so important. It was an honor to be a part of it. What was the preparation swim shoot like? It was great – but challenging! In the space of three days, it went from being summer to winter. In Siberia, there are no spare parts, no rental for forgotten equipment, so we had to be properly prepared and pack wisely. Why is it so important to think about the state of the world’s water? It doesn’t matter who you are, water affects us all. Every human being needs water. And nature is soul – it’s everything we have to protect us. Right now, I’m very concerned about the water situation on our planet. There is so much plastic in the water. It’s a real problem. Why did you choose to work with Oris? Even though we’d had very little contact, we clicked right from the beginning. I like the claim – #GoYourOwnWay. That says a lot about my life and what I do with a camera. I also liked Oris’s mission to raise awareness about water. That’s so important right now. And by happy coincidence, I have family who come from Hölstein, too. Your thoughts on the Oris Aquis Date Relief? It’s a simple watch, but it’s beautiful, and extremely tough. It was a great partner on the shoot, and of course, I love that it’s supporting Ernst and his honest commitment. And when you’re somewhere like Lake Baikal, which is really unforgiving, you need that kind of partner.

Hamilton and Interstellar Making ‘The Murph’

In 2014, the futuristic blockbuster Interstellar hit movie theaters, captivating audiences with its special effects, intriguing plot and the love story between a father and his daughter. The Khaki Field Murph is one of the main emotional links between the two main characters.

THE WATCH EDITION

‘The Murph’ is the affectionate name given by fans of the movie to the Hamilton watch that stars in the film and is integral to the plot. No other movie appearance epitomizes the importance of Hamilton’s Hollywood collaboration quite like ‘the Murph’ in Interstellar. In the film, the existence of humanity is under threat and a team from NASA uses interstellar travel to try to find a new planet. Cooper, a former NASA pilot, joins the mission which means leaving his daughter, Murph. Cooper gives Murph his watch. From inside the ‘tesseract’ of the fifth dimension Cooper sends a message using Morse code through the seconds hand of Murph’s watch. It is the quantum data that will help humanity escape dying Earth. When she works out the formula, Murph shouts ‘Eureka!’ to mark her discovery. Humanity is saved. It was clear that fans of the movie wanted an opportunity to own a piece of cinema history that means something to them. Now that Hamilton is celebrating its cinema year, they’ve made the Khaki Field Murph. With its 42 mm stainless steel case, black dial, beige Super-

LumiNova® inlaid hands, H-10 automatic movement with 80-hour power reserve and black leather strap, the Khaki Field Murph is an exact reproduction of the movie watch. The only difference is one that is sure to appeal to fans of the movie. The word ‘Eureka’ is printed in lacquer in Morse code on the seconds hand. If you didn’t know it was there, you’d never see it: it is barely visible to the naked eye. For those in on the secret, it’s clear to see and will have special significance for Interstellar fans. The links to the movie don’t end there. In close collaboration with the film’s award-winning production designer, Nathan Crowley, Hamilton developed a special box which is an inspiration of the famous tesseract from the film. The Khaki Field Murph itself is not limited, but the special packaging is. Just 2,555 have been produced. The colored stripes recall the inside of the supercube where Cooper is when he discovers he can communicate with Murph through time and space. Hamilton’s defining movie moment is now a defining moment for the movie’s fans who can finally own ‘the Murph’ – a piece of movie history.

The Maison Francis Kurkdjian with founding partner Marc Chaya

He knows how to talk about perfume like no other, using images that speak to everyone. Born an artist, Francis Kurkdjian became a perfumer. Through an association of ideas. Because he has a feel for his times, a desire to tell beautiful stories and curiosity about people and raw materials. For the pleasure of giving pleasure. For an attraction to taking risks - the antidote to boredom.

STYLE

we began to see the emergence of niche brands. These grew because of customer demands, they wanted scents that were not widely distributed or too easily accessible. They wanted something more creative and sophisticated too. Then we saw an evolution in retail. Large stores looked for creativity in an attempt to reinvent themselves as destination stores to compete against perfume chain stores. Maison Kurkdjian was founded in response to these demands. We were and are creatively driven, not marketing driven. Our marketing simply serves our creativity. The industry is evolving in this direction. This is continuing.

Our Zeina Mokaddam sat with Marc Chaya. Together with Francis, in 2009 they founded the Maison Francis Kurkdjian. Marc is the energy and business force behind Maison Francis Kurkdjian. Tell us a little about the DNA of the maison of Francis Kurkdjian. You style yourselves as keen observers of society. In which aspects? Fragrance is a form of art, a form of creation that sits within its own time. Francis is an artist of the 20th and 21st century, and his work is reflective of his society and the era in which we live. The maison is a luxury fragrance house that carries the name of one of the most celebrated perfumers of our time. The DNA is that we see ourselves as the most luxurious fragrance house, but our luxury has a very special definition because we feel that the term ‘luxury’ has been overused and widely misused. For us, the luxury comes in the genius of creativity. Our luxury stands in the craftsmanship, in the knowhow. It’s not about the price, it’s about the quality of the work. Also, our luxury is shared through the highest levels of customer experience. We thrive on creating an uplifting experience through our fragrance. You’re marking a decade of the maison. How have you seen the business of scents evolve over those years? What trends have you observed? What do you feel will be next to come? We’ve seen the landscape change dramatically. For nearly 60 years, fragrance was booming through something which became known as ‘mastige’ – a combination of mass and prestige. Fashion designers discovered that fragrance is an accessory that enables every customer to take a little piece of the designer’s dream home with them. If she can’t afford to buy a couture Chanel dress, she can afford a little bottle of perfume. However, through this ‘mastige’ the market became over-saturated. From designers, it then also became celebrities who marketed themselves through fragrance. In the early 2000s though,

You refer to perfumers as artists. Tell us more about how you draw this parallel – particular in the case of Francis and his approach to the creative process. Perfumery is a form of art without question. In any form of art, you need to master your technique. You have to learn chemistry, how to mix essential oils. But even knowing this is not enough though – it doesn’t make you an artist. Francis Kurkdjian though, IS an artist, a creative genius. He regards those 800+ essential oils as colours, or as musical notes. He uses them to interpret and make real his visions. A perfumer isn’t a chemist, he or she is an artist. Something else to understand – art can express joy or sadness. But through perfume, we only express joy. Talk to us about the two spirits of Gentle Fluidity. The two perfumes are devoid of orientation. How does a scent successfully avoid gender? That’s the beauty of perfume. An essential oil IS gender neutral. It’s what you do with it that determines orientation. Take silk – you can cut it in to a tie and make it masculine, or you can cut it in to a dress and make it feminine. So, it’s what you do with your material – in Francis’s case essential oils – that gives it gender. Interestingly, in the Middle East there is no gender orientation in perfume - men and women can readily wear anything. Floral, woody, amber, anything. It’s only in the 20th century that the rest of the world started to define some scents as masculine, others as feminine. For Gentle Fluidity, Francis decided to celebrate these aspects and similarities. He has used the same five base notes to create two different scents. How should they be worn? Individually, blended on the skin? Every one of our creations is a stand-alone creation. They live on the skin in their own free way, they are not designed to be layered. They can complement each other though – in your own very personal way. Your scent is an invisible emotion that gives away part of your personality to others. Your perfume needs to make you feel happy, and feel at ease with who you are. Scents are often ‘love at first sight’ – you know immediately whether you like it or not.

Bentley at 100 Celebrates at Geneva

Bentley celebrated its Centenary at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show with a range of new models, including a highly evocative new Centenary Limited Edition, inspired by one of the British brand’s most iconic racing cars.

Making its first ever appearance on the world stage in Geneva was the new Bentayga Speed. The world’s fastest production SUV features more purposeful styling to match its imperious performance credentials. Alongside the Bentayga Speed, the stylish, all-new Continental GT Convertible made its global public show debut. Enjoying its European show debut, and celebrating Bentley’s centenary, was the new Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner. This superbly crafted car, which includes a piece of W.O.’s personal 1930 8 Litre’s crankshaft, pays tribute to Bentley’s founding father and is restricted to just 100 examples. To commemorate the Centenary, engineers cut the crankshaft into 100 sections for display in each of the new Mulliner cars. The piece is beautifully mounted between the two rear seats and makes each Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner unique. Visitors to the Bentley stand were able to develop a deeper understanding of the type of customer experience that makes this iconic British brand truly extraordinary. The range of available experiences –

cuated in the new Innovation Lab – included the opportunity to learn about Bentley on Demand, the company’s luxury connected-mobility service, and Bentley’s Advanced Connectivity, which is the world’s first super-fast, reliable and secure in-car WiFi system, as well as an insight into the type of industry-leading services Bentley is exploring for the future. The Ferrari F8 Tributo A celebration of excellence

Ferrari has revealed the first official photographs of the F8 Tributo, the new mid-rear engined sports car that represents the highest expression of the company’s classic two-seater berlinetta.

DRIVE

The name is an homage to both the model’s uncompromising layout and to the engine that powers it – with a massive 720 cv and a record specific power output of 185 cv/l, it is the most powerful V8 in Prancing Horse history for a non-special series car and sets the benchmark not just for turbos, but for engines across the board. The 3902 cc V8 won “Best Engine” in the International Engine of the Year awards three years running in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and, in addition, in 2018, was awarded the title of the best engine of the last two decades. As these prestigious awards demonstrate, in the automotive world, Ferrari’s V8 engine is seen as the very epitome of sportiness and driving pleasure. This is particularly the case when it is mid-rearmounted in a two-seater. Ferrari has been honing the scope of abilities of this architecture, which creates an optimal weight balance, to perfection for over four decades. The result is the F8 Tributo, which is one of the fastest, most thrilling and communicative supercars ever. The new car replaces the 488 GTB, with improvements across the board, providing even better control on the limit along with greater

on-board comfort. The F8 Tributo punches out 50 cv more than the car it replaces, is lighter and benefits from a 10% improvement in aerodynamic efficiency along with the latest version of the Side Slip Angle Control, now in 6.1 guise. So while the F8 Tributo offers the highest levels of performance of any car in the current range, that performance is also very usable. The F8 Tributo delivers its 720 cv without the slightest hint of turbo lag and produces an evocative soundtrack. Instantaneous power is matched by exceptional handling thanks to advanced vehicle dynamics solutions. These include a new version of the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (FDE+) which can be activated in the manettino’s RACE position for the first time, a move designed to make performance on the limit easier to reach and control for an even greater number of drivers. The steering wheel rim is also smaller in diameter to enhance the level of tactility and make the car feel even more agile. In addition, weight reduction measures have cut the car’s dry weight by 40 kg compared to the 488 GTB, further enhancing both responsiveness and driving pleasure without impinging on interior comfort.

MEN’S PASSION

State-of-the-art aerodynamic solutions incorporated into the car’s body help ensure that the extraordinarily powerful engine can be fully exploited. As with the 488 Pista, the F8 Tributo’s aero package is directly evolved from the track and it adopts several features from the 488 Pista designed to help manage engine heat, including, for instance, the rearward-angled front radiators and the dynamic engine air intakes positioned either side of the spoiler instead of on the rear flanks. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the F8 Tributo is essentially a bridge to a new design language that will continue to emphasise Ferrari’s key characteristics of high performance and extreme aerodynamic efficiency. The front of the car is characterised by the S-Duct, a solution that made

its debut on the 488 Pista, but which has been redesigned to suit the extensive modifications made to this area of the car. The result is that the S-Duct alone contributes an impressive 15% to the overall increase in downforce compared to the 488 GTB. The new, more compact, horizontal LED headlights allowed Ferrari’s aerodynamicists to incorporate new brake cooling intakes in combination with those on the outside of the bumper, the aim being to improve air flow throughout the entire wheelarch and thereby avoid having to increase the size of the braking system to cope with the car’s greater speed. The new Lexan rear screen showcases the engine compartment and also brings a modern twist to the most distinctive design element from Ferrari’s most famous V8, the F40. The louvres help extract hot air from the engine compartment without impacting the efficiency of the

DRIVE

blown spoiler which has been further evolved to increase downforce generated at the rear. The spoiler wraps around the tail lights, visually lowering the car’s centre of gravity and allowing a return to the classic twin light cluster and body-coloured tail, another signature of the early 8-cylinder berlinettas like the very first in the legendary series, the 1975 308 GTB. The cabin retains the classic, driver-oriented cockpit look typical of Ferrari’s mid-rear-engined berlinettas, but every element of the dash, door panels and tunnel, has been completely redesigned. The new generation HMI (Human Machine Interface), complete with round air vents, new steering wheel and controls as well as a new 7” passenger touchscreen display, significantly enhance the on-board environment for driver and passenger.

On The Road with the Portofino How Ferrari’s 600cv Portofino has changed the game for everyday supercars

The Ferrari Design Centre-penned Ferrari Portofino is an aggressivelystyled car with a two-box fastback configuration – unprecedented in a coupé-convertible with a retractable hard top – that adds extra sleekness to its silhouette, lending it a sportier character without impinging on its elegance and dynamism. More than just good looks though, this is an everyday supercar to prove the point, our Zeina Mokaddam got behind the wheel and took it on the streets of Kuwait City.

DRIVE

From first sight, the Portofino immediately looks every inch the nimble athlete - roof up or down, it looks the complete sporting GT. No compromises. Indeed, roof up, so neatly does the roofline blend in to the trunk that you’d be pushed to guess there’s a retractable roof only the flick of a switch away. This is no mean feat, and countless other marque’s failed attempts to achieve this spring to mind. The power-folding hardtop is lighter than before despite being larger and beefed up. It can be opened and closed at speeds up to 40 kmh; but doing so is like opening a drag chute. The body is sculpted and includes a plethora of slats, vents and intakes – all designed to drag hot air away from the engine and feed air to the intercoolers. Complex, and necessarily open, the Portofino is nonetheless fully 6 percent more slippery than the California T. Add to this more power – 40 cv more; deduct the sizeable weightreduction – around the mass of an averagely-sized man; plus, factor in a slight addition to maximum torque; and you’ve got a car that will take you to 200 kmh in 10.3 seconds (it launches hard), and onwards to more than 320 kmh. The roads of Kuwait city were our canvas to put the Portofino’s chassis and suspension to the test. Ferrari claim the car’s lighter body is still 35 percent stiffer than before, and front springs are 15.5 percent

firmer, 19 percent firmer in the back. It’s a sporting – but comfortable – ride ALL the time… adaptive damping sees to that. Electrically assisted steering – only previously part of the 812 Superfast – is perhaps on its way to becoming the norm for all Ferraris. It’s quick, it’s easy, it’s super-smooth and it centres well. The last one percent of feedback that you might be looking for doesn’t always appear – your heightened senses will be employed when the time comes make up for this. Carbon-ceramic brake rotors are standard, and these offer reassuringly strong stopping power delivered in conjunction with a firm pedal feel. Infotainment systems are a focus for both driver and passenger alike. In the Portofino neither is overlooked – as long as you select the optional touchscreen for your passenger to play with – then they’ll be able to modify navigation waypoints mid-journey. The front seats, now with thinner – and magnesium – frames, are superbly supportive and wildly adjustable. They don’t provide enough rear leg-room for more than the briefest journey however. Another Ferrari that’s really useable every day. This is becoming a habit for Maranello. The Portofino has picked up its predecessor’s the California - ball, but such are its advances, it is now playing an altogether more enjoyable game.

A highlight in its own right, the new 911 Cabriolet is one of three new sports cars Porsche launches at the 89th Geneva Motor Show. “With each new generation of the 911, we face the challenge of enhancing our iconic car carefully and yet consistently to meet the needs of the future,” says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. Alongside the rear-engine 911 Cabriolet, Porsche also unveils the mid-engine 718 T, a 300 hp (220 kW) driving machine available in the Boxster and Cayman variants. The Macan S, with a new V6 turbocharged front engine, completes the debuting trio as a bestseller in the brand’s model range.

DRIVE

Four months ago, Porsche launched the new 911 Coupé in Los Angeles. The eighth generation of this timeless sports car is more powerful, more digital and faster than ever before. Now it is the turn of the open-top variant of the 911 to take centre-stage. The S model features a 450 hp (331 kW) twin-turbo engine that delivers top speeds of over 300 km/h, and acceleration of 0-100 km/h in less than four seconds. Drivers can enjoy the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and with the Porsche Wet mode even safer handling on wet roads. The model’s design applies a modern twist on classic elements from classic 911 models. The latest 911 Cabriolet is the latest in a long line of open-top Porsche models that includes the company’s very first vehicle. This body style first appeared in the 911 family more than 30 years ago, and it continues to symbolise a uniquely intense driving experience to this day. The weight of the soft top has been further optimised, and it now takes only twelve seconds to completely fold it away, thanks to a new hydraulic motor – it closes back up with the same swiftness too, even when travelling at speeds up to 50 km/h. Made predominantly from magnesium, the high-tech structure of the soft top, designed by Porsche, prevents the roof from ballooning even at high speeds. The new 718 T – concentrated driving dynamics Porsche launches a second model at the Geneva Show, the 718 T. The new touring variant of the Boxster and the Cayman combines the 300 hp (220 kW) powerful four-cylinder turbo boxer engine with highly sophisticated dynamic components such as the Sport Chrono package and PASM sports suspension that includes a 20-millimetre-lowered body. The car also comes equipped with PADM adaptive body positioning and Porsche Torque Vectoring with mechanical rear differential lock as standard – features which are being made available with the 2-litre boxer engine for the first time. In combination, they pack the high-performance character of the two-seater sports car into an especially exciting Porsche experience: the 718 T will be most at home on winding country roads, offering the sheer joy of driving as its ultimate goal. Equipped with the essentials, this puristic driving machine is the heir to the 911 T from 1968 and the 911 Carrera Clubsport from 1987. The new Macan S – more powerful, with a new design and interior features The new Macan S also makes its first public appearance in Geneva. Porsche has comprehensively upgraded the Macan in terms of design, comfort, connectivity and driving dynamics. The distinctive Porsche design DNA is visible in the compact SUV’s three-dimensional LED light panel on the rear of the vehicle. Eye-catching new features in the interior include the 10.9-inch touchscreen of the new Porsche Communication Management (PCM), the newly arranged and designed air vents and the optional GT sports steering wheel familiar from the 911. The range of comfort equipment is extended with an ioniser to improve the air inside the car, and a heated front windscreen. The Macan S is powered by a new V6 engine with 3-litre displacement and twin-scroll turbocharger in central turbo layout. The engine has a power output of 354 hp (260 kW) and torque of 480 Nm. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) and the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive are a perfect match for the new engines.

Maserati has also announced the start of sales in Europe of the Levante Trofeo and Levante GTS.

LEVANTE TROFEO LAUNCH EDITION - A LIMITED EDITION

This amazing Levante’s quintessentially sporty personality is highlighted by new details in “3D Touch” matt carbon fibre, the specific instrument cluster graphics, floor mats with metal Trofeo badges, and a Maserati clock with a unique dial. The on-board set up is completed by a 1,280-watt, 17-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium surround sound audio system for a concert hall sound experience.

To launch the new model in the market, Maserati is presenting the Levante Trofeo Launch Edition, a limited edition of 100 units. The Levante Trofeo Launch Edition will be available not only in the Blu Emozione Matte colour presented at the Geneva International Motor Show but also in the unique paints Giallo Modenese and Rosso Magma. Inside the Levante Trofeo cabin is a wealth of elegant features which create an environment of pure luxury. “Pieno Fiore” is like no other leather used in the automotive industry for its natural, soft feel and for the unique character it develops throughout the years.

PERSONALIZATION The special things about the Maserati stand at this 89th edition of the Geneva International Motor Show is the way it focuses on highlighting a distinctive Italianness and the process of craftsmanship and customization, considerations that have prompted Maserati to host on their stand - together with Ermenegildo Zegna, a longstanding partner and a leader in the field of men’s luxury clothing, two other leading artisanal firms in their field: Giorgetti, the internationally renowned Italian woodworking company, known for its furniture and unique design pieces, and De Castelli, a leading metalworking firm, specializing in the production of unique home design accessories, custom surfaces and projects.

DRIVE

At Maserati tradition becomes innovation, combining fine craftsmanship, advanced technology and sophisticated design for the sort of exclusive, unique mix only Maserati knows how to apply to its cars. The stand provides an instructive tour through three different dedicated thematic areas. Each area will feature a display of tools, materials and components that, specially crafted by Zegna, De Castelli and Giorgetti, bear witness to the unending quest for excellence, style and originality, typical of products designed and Made in Italy, and therefore typical of Maserati. Speaking of innovation and design, when it comes to customizing the stand, for the first time ever Maserati is taking advantage in the Customization Area of a D-Table, the only interactive table which combines the latest-generation software and elegant, sophisticated design.

21st century control Team Italia aboard the new 69m Benetti Spectre

Team Italia, world leader in the marine electronics market for mega and maxi yachts, is proud to have installed an I-BridgeÂŽ console that uses fully integrated multitouch technology aboard the new fullcustom 69-metre Spectre by Benetti. In addition to the concepts of electronics, ergonomics and style, there are also innovative applications of mechatronics (the innovative discipline that integrates mechanics, electronics and IT to automate the systems), which have been engineered and constructed by the company to suit the yacht.

SAIL

The full-custom I-Bridge® system for the 69m Spectre was created using multitouch technology for the control and management of the wheelhouse, which relies on three fully redundant 32” touch panels with 4k technology. These devices allow to control and manage, in addition the steering and joystick pilot functions, all the other systems on the yacht, such as the FIRE SYSTEM, WATERTIGHT DOORS, FIRE DOORS and INTRUSION DETECTOR. The control of the navigation systems, such as radar, full ECDIS, CCTV, searchlight and thermal cameras, is instead managed via 3 multi-controls equipped with joggers, trackball and OLED systems. The I-Bridge® console on the Spectre has a 46” touch chart table that, in addition to working as an IMO-approved planner, also manages the I-PLAN and I-NAV applications, the Anchor Watching System, the document and Systems Supervisor applications, as well as the infotainment section. The full control and management of all navigation data is achieved through ultra-stretch monitors, which means this data is always available to the captain in every navigation phase. Two integrated wings allow to control the yacht from the external stations as well. Finally, TEAM Italia can provide regular system maintenance using remote diagnostics to access the installed systems through specific authentication and authorisation procedures.

Concierge Service from Gulf Bank Does your bank do this for you?

Does your bank offer you a concierge service? Gulf Bank does for its premium credit cardholders – that’s those with Visa Infinite, MasterCard World and Visa Signature. So, what’s on offer?

BANKING

Firstly, let’s look back at the history of concierge banking. A new concept? Not really. In fact, it is a service that was first created almost a century ago when America’s House of Morgan established a division within the bank set on helping customers with their wants and desires from banking services to everyday items such as reservations, concert tickets, shipping and shopping for hard to find items. It operated very much in the same way a concierge in a hotel.

Today, Gulf Bank is committed to enriching a wider group of its customers lives and making the tasks involved in getting the best out of modern life just that little bit easier.

Throughout the years, other banks developed this idea to also include basic business services such as foreign translation, typing assistance (how very 20th century!), event planning, general office support and basic marketing.

What do you get?

Concierge banking, however, has traditionally been reserved for a bank’s private banking clients.

That’s why their concierge service is now available to all Gulf Bank’s premium credit cardholders namely Visa Infinite, MasterCard World and Visa Signature.

LISTINGS

OUR CURATED HIGHLIGHTS OF WHAT’S ON IN THE REGION DURING APRIL Lina Bakir’s Fusion Dream: Unforgettable: A fusion of orchestra, singers and outstanding Kuwaiti pianists She’ll be known to many of you as the musical impresario behind the decade-long series of ‘Une Nuit de Rêves’ concerts and, this time, Lina Bakir is back with something on an altogether larger scale – a night at the Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre on Saturday 4 May from 7pm. Lina’s ‘Fusion Dream: Unforgettable’ picks up where ‘Une Nuit de Rêves’ left off… and takes things to another level. Where those earlier dinner / concerts provided memorable evenings on an intimate scale, ‘Unforgettable’ takes to Kuwait’s most significant stage and offers the nation a dazzling musical journey around the world. For one night only, be inspired by performances from outstanding pianists as well as the talented vocalists and the superb orchestra accompanying them. Delving into the heart of the Arab world with songs from Fairouz and Asmahan, you’ll travel through popular culture with Lady Gaga’s ‘A Star Is Born’ and Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’… amongst other well-known tunes. You’ll get your toes tapping to the rhythmic beats of Latin tempo, and Bocelli’s inspiring songs including ‘Bésame Mucho’. Other geniuses are not overlooked – listen out for classics such as Chopin’s ‘Nocturne’ in C-sharp minor and ‘Casardas’. At the heart of Kuwait’s musical maturation – Lina has taught two generations of the nation’s young musicians – she is a passionate supporter of the advancement of live performances and an advocate for the importance of the creation of a musically eloquent society. The evening is supported by ABK, DHL and Bayan Dental Clinic. Do not miss it! More info at jacc-kw.com
