THE MARINE EDITION Hello sailor
ISSUE NUMBER 93 - MARCH 2018
JUST A THOUGHT Dear March 2018, For the world, March is marked by Mother’s Day. For MEN’S PASSION it is marked by our annual MARINE EDITION as our sister company gives “berth” to a new edition of the KUWAIT YACHT SHOW. And what a labor giving “berth” it is indeed! But like every mother knows, nothing compares to the feeling than seeing the outcome of all your labor come to fruition and to watch it grow every year to a point where it actually outgrows you and starts having a life of its own. It is with the greatest of pride that I watch my protégé, my colleague and my partner, fly with KYS 6th edition, taking it and herself, to new heights and horizons. No mother can ever be prouder! To life, To a most magnificent journey of growth, To every Mother, To every Father, To every human being who has mothered or fathered a human, a project or a human project!

Today, we take a different view when we look out to sea. Although our relationship with the coast still delivers a commercial benefit, we’re more likely to view the sea as a place of leisure. The month of March sees the return of the annual Kuwait Yacht Show. In this special edition we take a look back over its first five years, and highlight some of the things we’re most looking forward o this year.

A great season on the seas opens with the Kuwait Yacht Show
E
very year since 2013, the Kuwait Yacht Show has marked the beginning of the marine year in the Gulf’s most northern state. It’s a gathering of industry and commerce, traders and customers, sailors and the just-plain-curious. Back in its familiar home of Salmiya’s Marina Crescent, it’s a week of luxury and of gateways to new adventures.

This year’s Kuwait Yacht Show looks set to be one of the best editions so far. Across the region the marine industry continues to grow within the recreational sector. In a sense, it is held back by only one thing - availability of berths. Build a marina, and they will come. Kuwait’s appetite for a day on the ocean waves remains undimmed, and we’re always looking for new ways to enjoy our time at sea. The Kuwait Yacht Show shines a spotlight on some of the very finest (and often most fun) aspects of sailing in the Arabia Gulf - and for those with the financial wherewithal - beyond. From superyachts to day cruisers and lightweight recreational craft, the Kuwait Yacht Show has the nation’s marine-lovers covered. Throughout four days from the 27th to the 30th of March, the 2018 edition of the show provides the the year’s best opportunity to get hands-on experience with the hottest and the best from the marine world. And there’s more. For those with an eye for tech-wizardry and even the latest styles, the Kuwait Yacht Show has special focuses in these areas too. It’s not just boats - keep an eye open for this year’s official Kuwait Yacht Show car... the Lincoln Navigator. Known as a ‘yacht on wheels’, it is a well-appointed luxury SUV for those who appreciate the indomitable Lincoln style. The Kuwait Yacht Show is more than just a boat show.

Kuwait is one of the largest leisure boating markets in the Gulf. According to figures from the Kuwaiti Government, there are now an estimated 15,000 registered leisure boats. Kuwaitis have always been sea people and the boat ownership ratio is estimated at one boat for every 44 Kuwaiti nationals and expatriates with higher incomes, a figure that is very high even for developed boating markets in Europe and the United States.
Kuwait Yacht Show The first five years
F
or five years, PH7 Group’s Kuwait Yacht Show has returned each spring to herald the start of each new yachting year. Landing later this month, from the 27th March to be precise, at the city’s Marina Crescent in Salmiya, this 6th edition of KYS once again collects together the best of the marine world - and adds a dash of automotive and style too. On the eve of the 2018 edition of the Kuwait Yacht Show, there’s no better time to look back at highlights of the first five outstanding years and look at some of the reasons for its enduring success.
THE MARINE EDITION
The market is almost exclusively an imported one for small boats and yachts with a small network of boat distributors associated with all of the major Gulf boat builders and European and US shipyards. The boating season in Kuwait is from April to September, the opposite of that to the lower Gulf states such as the UAE, Qatar and Oman.

A private initiative by PH7 Group, it has nonetheless secured enthusiastic support from the states Ministry of Commerce and Industry – a sure sign of the value Kuwait places on the marine economy, and an official acknowledgment of the value this now well-established yacht show has imbued on the international image of the nation.

Manei Power Boats Made in Kuwait
A
bdullah Al Manei is about to change the way marine enthusiast in Kuwait look at sports catamarans. The man behind Almanei Boats and Marine Equipments, Abdullah is all set to debut his unique, top-of-the-line catamarans at this years Kuwait Yacht Show. Abdullah reinstituted his father’s company last year, wanting to revive his father’s legacy, a dream he has harbored and worked towards for many years. Almanei Boats and Marine Equipments was originally started by Ali Al Manei back in the mid 1980s and ever since its inception, Almanei is best known for its catamaran designs. The flourishing business saw an untimely demise due to the Gulf War. What makes the Almanei catamarans so special? “Well that’s a family secret,” exclaims Abdullah. However, in a country like Kuwait, with strong winds, catamarans make for a great sailing experience, he lets us on. The Almanei catamarans can go up to 60 mph+ of speed, and not only show 20% more fuel efficiency when compared to Deep V boats, but also promise superior air and water dynamics. Considering these boats have a very low water float level, they can sail comfortably even on shallow waters. At this year’s KYS, Almanei will be showcasing two of their most unique catamarans featuring fibre glass hulls - the mpb22 and mpb-32. The mpb-22 is a 22 feet, two-seater sports catamaran ideal for those looking for adventure and speed at sea. The mpb-32 is a 32 feet, nine-seater catamaran, perfect for sailing leisurely with your family and friends. Much like its owner, the Manei Power Boats are all made in Kuwait. “We wanted to show people exactly what we can create right here. You don’t always have to go abroad for superior quality. The trade history of our country is proof of our superior boat making capabilities. Almanei is as much about reviving our traditions as it is about wading our way in to the future,” said Abdullah. For a man who has spent a large part of his childhood at his
father’s workshop, Abdullah understands the need to stick to traditions as much as he values moving forward with the times. The Almanei boats, claims Abdullah, are unsinkable because of the formula they use for the catamaran hulls, however the upgrade from wood to fibre glass is his own addition. “One of the biggest challenges Kuwait’s marine industry faces is the lack of upgrades. We have been doing the same thing over and over for years, but I see that changing now. Which also makes it a good time for Almanei to come back in business,” said Abdullah when talking about why ‘now’ is a best time for him to revive his family legacy.

Lincoln Navigator
A look at the official car of this year’s Kuwait Yacht Show
Y
ou can be sure that every detail of the annual Kuwait Yacht Show is pored over in the tiniest of detail. So, when making a choice for the show’s official car, the most obvious route to go down was to appoint an automobile where every detail has been equally fastidiously examined. McLaren Automotive, launched in 2010, is now the largest part of the McLaren Group. Every vehicle is handassembled at the McLaren Production Centre (MPC) in Woking, Surrey, England. The company has three defined product families: Sports Series, Super Series and Ultimate Series which are retailed through over 80 retailers in 30 markets around the world.
The 2018 Lincoln Navigator is a fine balance of elegance and muscle. It’s the perfect expression of every car - all wrapped up in one oversized package. It’s neither shy nor retiring, but it is incredibly well-behaved. First produced in 1997, the Lincoln Navigator is celebrating its 20th anniversary. This yacht on wheels is the first non-limousine model to seat more than six people. There is no doubt that the Navigator brings ease and command with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter engine and a 10-speed transmission. The engine, capable of producing 450-horsepower, gives drivers and passengers a smooth and controlled ride. Knowing where you’re headed in life – and how you’ll get there – instills you with a calm confidence. Navigator reinforces that feeling with a new Twin-Turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces best-in-class horsepower and torque. Plus, the new 10-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission is designed to adapt in real-time. Using input from a dozen sensors, it
determines what you want, then engages the right gear at the right time to deliver the performance you seek. Adaptive Suspension helps get you there smoothly by isolating the vehicle from road imperfections, while enhanced soundabsorbing materials and Active Noise Control help keep road noise at bay. The result is a relaxing atmosphere conducive to quiet contemplation or pleasant conversation. The best interior quietness in the class. The character of a home stands out in its details – and the same is true within this serene sanctuary. Lincoln artisans honed every aspect to encourage tranquility. The sweeping horizontal lines of its hand-wrapped dashboard reinforce the spaciousness. Real wood trim naturally enriches the ambience. European stitching adorns its hand-wrapped leather assist handles and Wollsdorf leather-trimmed heated1 steering wheel. French seams on the upholstery are stitched precisely 6 mm apart.

Y
ou may never ave considered yourself a yachtsman (or yachtswoman for that matter) until you passed by this year’s KYS. Want to know more? Here’s a look at some of the key marine and yachting events that will be coming over the horizon during 2018.
Monaco Yacht Show 26 - 29 September Each year, the MYS curates the exhibition of 125 extraordinary one-off superyachts built by the world’s most respected shipyards and welcomes 580 leading companies from the yachting industry. In September, the yachting industry turns its focus exclusively to the MYS where 45 new launches are annually unveiled in a worldwide debut. Explore an expansive selection of boats and yachts for sale. Discover the latest nautical supplies and services, as well as lifestyle products.
Volve Ocean Race until June You might want to have spent more than one day at the Kuwait Yacht Show before thinking of entering this race, but it remains the toughest challenging in the sailing world. Racing one-design Volvo Ocean 65s, the world’s best professional ocean racers drive themselves to out-work and out-perform their competition around the globe. It’s relentless: the importance of winning, the adventure of life on board, the transformative effect on the sailors — all of these combine to give the race its power and depth. Lendy Cowes Week 4 - 11 August Since 1826 Cowes Week has played a key part in the British sporting summer calendar and is one of the UK’s longest running and most successful sporting events. It now stages up to 40 daily races for around 1,000 boats and is the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world.
Qatar International Boat Show 13 - 17 March Taking place just prior to Kuwait’s Yacht Show (and just after the Dubai International Boat Show), QIBS makes an interesting stopping-off point mid-way through the region’s series of marine exhibitions.
The event offers a great mix of competitive sailing and social activities. The 8,500 competitors range from Olympic and world class professionals to weekend sailors. In excess of 100,000 spectators come to watch the sailing, enjoy the parties and live entertainment, and to experience the unique atmosphere. It is genuinely a one-of-a-kind event.

Porsche Cayenne
Trail-blazing across Fujairah with the third-generation Cayenne
N
ew engines, new chassis, innovative control concept and more connectivity mark just a few highlights of Porsche’s new third-generation Cayenne. The 250-kW (340 hp), threelitre turbo engine delivers 29 kW (40 hp) more than the previous model. The 2.9-litre V6 biturbo engine in the Cayenne S, which reaches speeds of up to 265 km/h, brings it up to 324 kW (440 hp) – an increase of 15 kW (20 hp). Equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package, the new Cayenne S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in less than five seconds.
DRIVE
With this new generation, the Cayenne is writing a new chapter in the relationship between driver and vehicle: The Porsche Advanced Cockpit is fully integrated into the sporty, luxurious atmosphere. So, all looks good on paper, and we’ve been huge fans of the Cayenne since it was first introduced back in 2002. Looking at those performance figures it sounds more like a sportscar than an SUV, right? Right. And there’s a reason for that - every car Porsche has ever produced throughout its history is, first and foremost, a sportscar. If it has any additional capabilities after that, they’re a happy bonus. Invited, as a guest of the Porsche Centre Kuwait, to put the new Cayenne to the test on the rugged trails of Fujairah, Men’s Passion’s Zeina Mokaddam (bottom right) jumped at the chance. Sporty and precise with a clear design – new and yet familiar, the appearance of the Cayenne has been enhanced in the style that runs through the Porsche Design DNA. The enlarged air intakes at the front are clear indicators of the increased performance. The new horizontal light edges mean that the SUV now appears wider and more athletic, even when stationary. The Cayenne is based heavily on the iconic 911 sports car: The third edition of the SUV, which has also been enhanced visually, now has mixed tyres and rear-axle steering for the first time. In addition to these typical sports car features, the onroad capabilities are further improved by active all-wheel drive as standard, Porsche 4D Chassis Control, three-chamber air suspension and the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) electronic roll stabilisation system. Despite its significantly extended standard equipment, the Cayenne weighs up to 65 kilograms less than its predecessor and remains perfectly suited to off-road use. The Cayenne’s expanded performance range, improving both sportiness and comfort, is due in no small part to the new eightspeed Tiptronic S gearbox. Shorter response times and sportier ratios in the lower gears enhance both on-road performance and off-road capability. At the other end of the expanded spread between comfort and sportiness, the long-transmission eighth gear ensures low torques, optimised fuel consumption and relaxed driving.
or off-road, the new Cayenne has impeccable manners and exceptional capabilities. Consistently eager for more, we’d point to the optional adaptive air suspension with its new threechamber technology as a key highlight - it significantly increases the spread between a sporty, firm connection and the driving comfort expected of a touring car.
The new Cayenne combines three chassis concepts in one new design: sports car, off-roader and touring car. This involved developing a new lightweight chassis base with a front axle featuring a separated link design and a multi-link rear axle.
Essentially, the new Cayenne adapts more than ever to the terrain (urban jungle or real one), as much as to the driver’s moods. The only question you’ll need to ask of yourself as you slide behind the wheel of your new third-generation Porsche Cayenne is “What do I want it to be today?”.
In practice, what does this all add up to? Porsche have, once again, delivered a sportscar with genuine SUV credentials. On
However you answer, you’ll know you’re driving a superlative sportscar with supreme SUV prowess.

A new concept in automotive retail, the new site in the Lebanese capital of Beirut adopts an innovative sales format, one which enables the sports car manufacturer to interact with a wide spectrum of target groups. For us, it delivers the upbeat spirit of a contemporary gentleman’s tailor that’s also part automotive showroom and very much a hipster hangout. Through the new Porsche Studio, we’ve witnessed the creation of a welcoming space that matches the desires of its clients with the full potential of the marque. Similar to “Porsche on Sylt” and the “Porsche Studio Guangzhou”, the new premises offer visitors an immersive brand experience, which highlights a range of the brand’s services. A special feature is the runway staging area – reminiscent of a catwalk at a fashion show – and LED screen, which plays visual content depicting various sports cars in real-world scenarios. Special sound and fragrance elements create an experience that appeals to all senses. Porsche Studio Beirut is centrally located in the Solidere shopping district, covering an area of over 309 square metres and providing the brand with a strong presence in the immediate vicinity of its current and prospective customers. Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo A plug-in hybrid with 680 hp
C
ombining the 4.0-liter V8 engine from the Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo with an electric motor, the 2018 Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo delivers a total output of 680 hp and 850 Nm of torque, These figures make it one of the most powerful production vehicles Porsche has ever made. But it is not just power that makes the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo unique in its segment. Its concept, including a large tailgate, low loading edge, increased luggage compartment volume and seating for five means that the new flagship of the model line offers a high degree of everyday practicality. Like the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid sedan, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo offers a compelling demonstration of the performance advantages of hybrid technology. The new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo utilizes a boost strategy derived from the 918 Spyder and combines a 136 hp electric motor with a 550 hp twin-turbo V8 engine. The E-performance powertrain allows the vehicle to sprint from zero to 100 km per hour in 3.4 seconds and complete the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds. The top track speed is 310 kmh. The Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo has a range of up to 49 kilometres and a top speed of 140 km/h when driven solely using electric power, which result in no local emissions. The lithium-ion battery has an energy content of 14.1 kWh and can be charged within 2.4 to 6 hours, depending on the charger and power connection. With their Panamera E-Hybrids, Porsche created a series of part-electric vehicles that you’d actually want to drive. For 2018, with the E-Hybrid Sport Turismo, they’ve gone one step further and delivered a part-electric vehicle that you simply MUST drive.

MSO Defined options are designed to further enhance both the appearance and technical credentials of McLaren cars, providing greater choice of material finishes and in many instances delivering significant weight reduction compared to standard components. The MSO Defined Titanium SuperSports exhaust, newly available for the 570S Coupé, 570GT and 570S Spider, is 5kg lighter than the standard Sports Series exhaust. The reduction in system weight is enabled – as the name suggests – by extensive use of titanium, a material more commonly associated with aerospace and motorsport. Of equal if not greater importance and considerably more obvious is the cleaner, crisper exhaust tone that has a pronounced crescendo above 5,000rpm and peaks at 5dB louder than the standard Sports Series system. The Titanium SuperSports Exhaust costs £4,750 when specified
on a new McLaren Sports Series vehicle at time of purchase. The system will also become available for retro-fitment from mid-2018 as part of the McLaren Aftersales range. “The MSO Defined option range from McLaren Special Operations allows McLaren owners to personalise their cars by selecting from a portfolio that is tailor-made for each McLaren Series and so perfectly complements their vehicle,” explains Ansar Ali, Managing Director, McLaren Special Operations. “With the 570S Spider now available and customer interest in our Sports Series continuing to grow, these new MSO Defined products provide even greater choice and opportunity for customers to create their own special McLaren.” The Black Pack gives buyers of a 570S Coupé or 570GT the opportunity to specify exterior body parts finished in black as a replacement for standard-fit Dark Palladium grey components. The MSO Defined Black Pack comprises front splitter; front aero blades; side skirts and side air intakes; door inserts; rear diffuser;

Separately, a Nano Black Exhaust Finisher that complements the Black Pack can be specified for the new Titanium SuperSports Exhaust, which has a Nano Clear Exhaust Finisher as standard. Devotees of carbon fibre can additionally opt for MSO Defined Extended Carbon Fibre Sill Covers with McLaren Branding in satin finish Visual Carbon Fibre, available on 540C and 570S Coupé, 570GT and 570S Spider. As well as emphasising McLaren’s commitment to lightweight components, the extended sill covers deliver a striking visual effect and protect the tub carpet underneath the cover. For Sports Series owners to whom the smallest details are important, McLaren Special Operations is also now offering MSO Defined Ignition Keys, painted in either Black or McLaren Orange. For example, it can take a full week to review 20,000 square metres of walnut material for the burr walnut veneer. Bentley typically rejects between 30 and 70 percent of veneers offered and all materials must have a high-burr density, minimal sapwood and feature no bark growth or structural defects. Each raw veneer is cut to a precise 0.6 mm layer, and each bundle of raw veneers must pass rigorous Bentley tests for stability in UV light and consistency from tree to tree. This process takes at least 18 months before the veneer is placed into a car.

Ferrari Portofino
We’re going on the road with Maranello’s latest Grand Tourer
Following it’s unveiling in
2017, and prior to deliveries commencing in May 2018,
at the invitation of Kuwait’s
Ferrari dealer Al Zayani, we’re heading off to the Puglia region of Italy to
drive the Ferrari Portofino
for the first time. Here’s a

hen it was first unveiled at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, it’s fair to say the new Portofino caused quite a stir. While the creation of beautiful motor cars is something Ferrari are adept at, delivering a convertible that looks as good with its roof up or down is an accomplishment few marques even get close to. With their latest GT however, Ferrari knocked the ball out of the park.
Beauty and performance are both key elements of the DNA of every Ferrari. Before we set off for Puglia, let’s consider what we know of the Portofino - the replacement for the muchloved California T - already. - an all-new chassis features a significant weight saving over the car it replaces - the renowned Ferrari V8 turbo now punches out 40 cv more than the California T’s power unit - all aspects of the 8-cylinder’s efficiency have been honed with the adoption of new pistons and con-rods, and a new intake system design - the Portofino’s vehicle dynamic characteristics have been completely revised and benefit from the introduction of new technological solutions - the Ferrari Design Centre-penned Ferrari Portofino is an aggressively-styled car with a two-box fastback configuration – unprecedented in a coupé-convertible with a retractable hard top - that adds extra sleekness to its silhouette, lending it a sportier character without impinging on its elegance and dynamism.

T
he Ferrari 488 Pista, which will be unveiled at this month’s Geneva Motor Show, is the successor to Ferrari’s V8-engined special series - the 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia and 458 Speciale – which have received critical acclaim for their performance and undiluted handling. The Ferrari 488 Pista marks a significant step forward from the previous special series in terms of both sporty dynamics and for the level of technological carry-over from racing. The name is, in fact, a direct homage to Ferrari’s unparalleled heritage in motor sports. The car’s development evolved directly from the company’s involvement in the FIA World Endurance Championship where it has won five Manufacturers’ titles in the GTE class in the six years since the series’ inception, taking 29 out of 50 races - and 25 years’ experience in running the Ferrari Challenge one-make series. The Ferrari 488 Pista’s extensive weight saving solutions, along with engine, vehicle dynamics and aerodynamic developments all derive from Ferrari’s racing cars: the 488 GTE and the 488 Challenge. The result is a car with an uncompromising mission: to offer track-like performance on and off the road, even when in the hands of non-professional drivers.

Maserati MY2018 Four of the finest. Where design matters
There are few manufacturers of automobiles that better understand the value of design than Maserati Here, we take a look at what’s on the road for 2018.
The two souls of the new Ghibli
Gran Turismo and Gran Cabrio
After four years of remarkable success in the international markets, the Ghibli’s exterior has been respectfully restyled to emphasize both its elegance and its sportiness - the pillars of its Maserati signature personality. Faithful to its DNA, the 2018 Ghibli range offers unmistakable class, top-quality performance and a stylish yet comfortable driving experience.
The GranCabrio range has been streamlined for 2018 and two well-defined versions will be offered – Sport and MC. The 4.2-litre GranCabrio has been discontinued, while the Sport and MC share the same powertrain and interior personalization packages. Both the GranCabrio MC – short for Maserati Corse – and the GranTurismo MC take on important ambassadorial roles for the entire Maserati range, representing the company’s long and illustrious racing heritage.
Ghibli GranLusso and GranSport are immediately recognisable thanks to their distinct exterior features and exclusive interiors. The exterior design stands out for its coupé-like attitude as well as for several unique features: the distinctive C-pillar bearing the iconic Saetta logo, the frameless doors, the pronounced grille that resembles iconic Maserati cars of the ‘50s, and the range-standard quadruple chromium-plated exhaust pipes. The addition of the Ghibli GranLusso and GranSport to the 2018 range drove the Design Centre in Turin to give each trim a clear identity, primarily by restyling the front and rear bumpers.
When it came to the MY18 restyle, the timeless Pininfarina design was treated with the utmost respect by the Maserati Design Centre. The results, among others, are even better aerodynamic efficiency and compliance with the latest pedestrian safety regulations. In essence, the GranTurismo is the ultimate expression of what grand touring means to Maserati.

The Quattroporte MY18 retains its top status in the high-end sedan segment with power upgraded V6 versions and a new Electric Power Steering that enables the new active Advanced Driving Assistance Systems.
In 2016, a new wind was unleashed in the luxury SUV segment with the arrival of the Levante. In 2018, the Maserati of SUVs has been further improved and enhanced with a range of new features for an even more thrilling driving experience – both onand off-road.
In terms of engine specifications, the top-of-the-range V6engined Quattroporte S and S Q4 now deliver 430 hp and 580 Nm peak torque, 20 hp and 30 Nm more than in the MY17. The increased power output grants the Maserati flagship sedan a top speed of 288 km/h and better acceleration. The Quattroporte S accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 5.0 seconds (MY17: 5.1 seconds), while the Quattroporte S Q4, with the Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system, needs only 4.8 seconds for the same sprint (previously 4.9 seconds). The introduction of Electric Power Steering (EPS) is another first for Maserati, replacing the previous hydraulic system.
The MY18 Levante made its world premiere at the 2017 Frankfurt Motorshow with a new range strategy and an array of hi-tech features, including EPS and the addition of new active functions to the existing driving assistance systems. The new range strategy – inaugurated by the Quattroporte in 2017 and continued by the Levante and the new Ghibli in 2018 – introduces two distinct new trims alongside the three existing powertrain versions: the luxury-orientated GranLusso and the red-blooded GranSport. Elegance and luxury reign in the Levante GranLusso.

Officine Panerai Behind the scenes at Neuchâtel
W
hen you’re this good at making watches, you don’t need to make a song-and-dance about it. Every day, since their establishment in 1860, the fine folk at Officine Panerai have gone about the creation of primarily functional and latterly desirable timepieces in a style befitting the brand’s Italian / Swiss heritage. We got a rare opportunity to visit their extraoridnary (yet understated) manufactory in the town of Neuchâtel. Let’s be clear. Although Panerai may not have the glitz associated with many in the world of fine watches, they more than make up for this in very many other ways. For years essentially unchanging and (as we’ve already mentioned) above all else practical pieces - as endorsed by the Italian Navy - recent years have seen an increasingly enthusiastic nod towards the more stylish Panerista. They’ve been enduringly stylish since forever, but never fashionable. One senses this is a state of affairs that quite suits the Florentine watchmakers. However, to wear a Panerai on the wrist speaks volumes about the owner. He, and increasingly these days she, is likely to be someone who doesn’t follow convention, but instead treads his own path. A Panerai has always been the mark of someone with an inate appreciation of fine engineering, and someone with a sense of measured adventure. Someone who is at peace with their place in the world. Someone who knows that it is the small gestures, rather than the grand, that people remember us for. Someone just like you and me perhaps?
A thread of restraint runs through the company - nothing happens unless there’s a damn good reason for it to - yet a more telling trait is that of the quiet pursuit of excellence. So, the creation of Panerai’s new(ish) manufacture took its own time in consideration and creation, but when it opened its doors in 2014 it was clear that it was well worth the wait. Remember that this is a company with valuable heritage nearly 160 year’s worth. Yet it walks a fine line in embracing today’s world while retaining an importance awareness of its past. The manufactory is as far from an archetypal traditional Swiss watch factory as one can be removed - it’s white, there’s an air-lock on entry, it’s proudly carbon-neutral and recycles rainwater. What does this have to do with making some of the world’s most discretely charismatic watches? Quite a lot actually - it’s a mark of the men and women who carry the Panerai torch firmly in their hands through these frenetic 21st century times in which we live. To look around the factory is to get the sense that all remains good in the world.
WATCHES
While some brands involve themselves in constant ‘armsrace’ mentality-driven challenges to deliver the most exotic of creations, Panerai’s approach is reassuringly realistic with a continuing focus on real-world practicaility. There are exotic materials, but they’re in there for valid reasons. There’s nothing rock’n’roll about a Panerai, other than the knowledge that it’s going to be the watch of choice for those in the know. The manufactory has opened doors to measured changes - and pretty soon Panerai will be making all their own movements. Considering it is only a decade and a half since they made their first, it’s a sign of how far they’ve come while maintaning their true sense of self. Revolutionary? No. Evolutionary? Completely. And to the point of perfection. Discover more tales from Neuchâtel online at passionsarabia.com/life-refined

P
anerai presented their new Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic models at this year’s SIHH, with the stainless steel or red gold case, in sizes of 42 mm and – for the first time – only 38 mm in diameter. These dimensions and characteristics make these watches extremely versatile, as does the new range of colours for the dials and straps of each new model. They’re worth closer inspection. These new Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic watches are fitted with the OP XXXIV Manufacture calibre, with automatic winding and a power reserve of three days, the basic standard of Panerai’s movements. CASE The Luminor Due case is 38 mm in diameter, the smallest ever produced by Panerai, and it is only 11.20 mm thick. It is made entirely of AISI 316L stainless steel, a steel alloy with excellent properties of corrosion resistance. The winding crown is protected by the classic bridge device with lever, patented by Panerai in 1956. The case and bezel have a polished finish. Solid steel back. DIAL The ivory dial, with exemplary luminosity and the classic Panerai design, has luminous dot markers and large blue figures, matching the hands. The small seconds counter is at 9 o’clock and the date window is at 3 o’clock. MOVEMENT The Luminor Due 3 Days is fitted with the Manufacture OP XXXIV automatic calibre, with a power reserve of three days. The bidirectional oscillating weight winds the watch continuously and efficiently. The balance oscillates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). 12½ lignes in diameter and 4.2 mm thick. 171 components.
WATCHES
With a diameter of only 38 mm or 42 mm, the new Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic has the unmistakable Panerai design in six new versions suitable for every wrist and situation. The Luminor Due is the thinnest and most versatile of Panerai’s creations. Its elegant, logical design, with pure, minimalist lines, is the result of a sophisticated technical reworking of the historic Luminor design. This has transformed an icon of high quality sports watchmaking into a new classic, suitable for every wrist and situation but always immediately recognisable with its powerful Panerai identity. These new Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic watches are fitted with the OP XXXIV Manufacture calibre, with automatic winding and a power reserve of three days, the basic standard of Panerai’s movements. The dial design – with large luminous figures in the purest Panerai style, small seconds counter and, for the first time in this collection, the date window – ensures the legendary legibility which has been an essential characteristic of the brand since the first example created in the 1930s.

Unique piece
Unique piece
With its invitation to live in harmony with the rhythm of the cosmos, Poetic Astronomy recreates the sparkle of the stars in a new series of twelve Midnight Zodiac Lumineux models, each equipped with an exclusive lighton-demand module.
The sun source of life, light and heat caresses a spinning fairy with its warm rays. The fairy stretches in an ethereal pose, reaching towards translucent clouds with her diamond wings.
With its gentle pale glow, the mysterious orb of the moon is the focus for this new Lady Arpels Nuit Féerique creation.
First developed in 2016 for the Midnight Nuit Lumineuse watch, this self-winding mechanical movement now illuminates the twelve signs of the Western Zodiac. Cherished by the Maison ever since the first lucky medals created in the 1950s, the astrological theme here comes to life in twelve luminous dials: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.
To give depth to the scene, craft skills have come together to create a succession of planes. In the foreground, the sun is made up of two pieces one in relief and one hollow set with yellow sapphires and spessartite garnets, providing the orb with an intense glow. In two and three dimensions, both opaque and transparent, clouds of turquoise, mother-ofpearl, enamel and diamonds enhance the beauty of this early-morning sky.
Made up of a hollow, diamond set surface and an openwork dome adorned with sapphires, it seems to illuminate the scene from the background, attracting the attention of a graceful fairy. Within the dial, different crafts come together to recreate the night’s sparkle: cut aventurine for the deep blue background, miniature painting and sculpted white gold on the fairy’s costume, round and tapered-cut diamonds to suggest the course of a shooting star.

Spirit of Mountain Exploration
Not just a single homage to a historical reference, the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris collection takes the spirit of Memovox Polaris and applies it to today’s man of action with a full range of timepieces: a three-hand automatic, a chronograph and a chronograph world time, as well as two models with a stronger vintage feel.
For 2018, and showcased at this year’s SIHH in Geneva, two new Millenary models come in white gold and pink gold with mother-of- pearl dials and diamond-set bezel and lugs. The innovative feature: matching, Polish woven gold bracelets which offers the strap a more dynamic, supple and sophisticated look and feel.
Inspired by the legendary professional Minerva watches from the 1920s and 30s that were meant for military use and mountain exploration, the 1858 collection pays tribute to the 160 years of the Minerva Manufacture and its extraordinary heritage.
Combining the high manufacturing know-how of Jaeger-LeCoultre, where all mechanical movements are made in-house, with the robustness, design aesthetic and sporty elegance today’s man demands, the JaegerLeCoultre Polaris is destined to become the symbol for an active lifestyle.
Both the original Milanese and the new Polish mesh bracelets are made from long, gold-wire ‘springs’ that are woven together to achieve a chainmail effect. But with the new and more complex Polish style, the wires are fitted in opposing directions giving an arguably more interesting finish than the traditional Milanese.
These watches were highly accurate, legible and robust for use in extreme conditions and are the inspiration behind this new collection which is being enriched with new vintage exploration-inspired timepieces, featuring distinctive aesthetics, innovative complications, a mix of materials and a choice of different case sizes.

IWC’s Tribute to Pallweber
IWC presents exclusive pocket watch with digital hours and minutes display
I With a clear focus on technology and development, the Swiss watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen has been producing timepieces of lasting value since 1868. The company has gained an international reputation based on a passion for innovative solutions and technical ingenuity.
WC Schaffhausen unveiled a pocket watch with jumping numerals at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva as a special highlight of the Jubilee collection, in celebration of the company’s 150th anniversary. The IWC Tribute to Pallweber Edition “150 Years”, limited to 50 pieces, is the fi rst pocket watch from IWC with a digital hours and minutes display since the production of the historical Pallweber pocket watch was discontinued in 1890, and the first new pocket watch from the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer in the 21st century.
In 1884, IWC manufactured the fi rst so-called Pallweber pocket watches. These innovative timepieces showed the hours and minutes in digital format with large numerals on rotating discs. In its 150th anniversary year, IWC honours this achievement with the IWC Tribute to Pallweber Edition “150 Years” (Ref. IW505101). This exclusive pocket watch is limited to 50 pieces. It is housed in an 18-carat red gold case, elaborately decorated with guilloché work and worn on an 18-carat red gold chain. The pocket watch features a white dial with a lacquered fi nish and white display discs. The small seconds hand is blued. As a reference to the design of the historical Pallweber watches and a tribute to F.A. Jones – the American watchmaker who founded IWC – the windows of the digital display are labelled as “Hours” and “Minutes”. Two windows in the spring cover reveal the hours and minutes, so the time can be read even when it is closed. The case also features a closed dust cover on the backside. The IWC-manufactured 94200 calibre advances the display discs by using a separate wheel train with a barrel of its own. The fact that the flow of power in the main wheel train operates independently guarantees precision and a 60-hour power reserve.

Spring Summer 2018
he new SS18 collection stages the new King of Hearts and their multiple talents: artist, writers, actors from all over the world with one thing in common: they are all Millennials. D&G becomes a get-together place, expression of the creativity of a new generation in their search of freedom of expression. Artists that are constantly travelling between east and west and define and shape the multimedia society where they live. The result is a surprisingly unique interpretation of the new expressive languages of Dolce&Gabbana.
STYLE
The clothes were as eclectic as the cast. A playing-card king motif and revived takes on print and color inspired by Memphis (the design movement born in Milan just as Dolce & Gabbana were themselves starting out as twentysomethings) played through it, along with a stalking leopard-and-tiger jungle print and Japan-esque prints inspired by their recent Alta Moda excursion to Tokyo.

There were hand-painted jeans, tweaked silhouette pajama suits printed with images of the brand’s popular hand-scrawled trainers, and a highproduction oversized sequin king-motif tee. There was also a series of interestingly progressive double-breasted cropped bomber jackets in black or olive that came peppered with patches urging eternal love.
STYLE
There was plenty of secondgeneration famous, including Dylan Brosnan (son of Pierce), Brandon Lee (son of Tommy and Pamela), Tyler Clinton (nephew of Bill), Myles O’Neal (son of Shaquille), Sacha Bailey (son of David), Roberto Rossellini (son of Isabella), and Tuki Brando (grandson of Marlon).

Corneliani Spring / Summer 2018
T
his Spring is dominated by cool tones: nuanced shades of the new “whale” blue are matched with masculine grays which are illuminated with an oil green accent, exclusively used for the accessories and knits. This dominant characteristic of our times, this continual rhythm of change, seems to dictate the beat of a new style. The collective rules fade away before our eyes, and before we can construct new ones, each of us seeks assurance in our own personal identities. This is reflected in the way we choose to portray ourselves. Fashion responds to this, offering concepts suited to the new geographic and existential nomadic restlessness, creating everyday objects that adapt to a variety of conditions, indulging us with elegance and delicacy. Being a part of the Corneliani look is like belonging to a club where elective affinity determines membership. The idea of fluidity and movement has been the inspiration for the next season, which offers a fully coordinated wardrobe that flows from a metropolitan look to one of leisure. The story we have dreamed up is of a voyage, through city and desert, structured in three chapters and written with the language of color, in pigments borrowed from an impressionist painting. FULL SUMMER A full-blown summer style is dominated by burnt tones of “terracotta” coupled with the purest white, and natural desert tones enriched with “tuareg blue” and ocher. The soft silhouette and natural fabrics contribute to the overriding sense of extreme sophistication and relaxation.
Techniques: New pinstripes with frisé effect and interrupted lines give a modern signature to traditional tailored fabrics. The crisp blues are conceived alongside warm grays and browns, in a series of proposals exploring the theme of windowpane patterns. Clever handling of the tones underlines textural contrasts, and new structures give a dynamism to fabrics and yarns, creating a look that is both casual and elegant.
STYLE
Strong contrasts, such as beige and black, hint at an identity that is sporty, yet sophisticated. Violet-toned inky hues run through the entire collection, creating a surprising harmony. Emphasis on detail creates a synthesis between sportswear and tailored garments: hydro zips, nylon with prints extracted from traditional drapery, and cottons with a membrane add functionality, while maintaining a tailored look. SUNNY TIME The colors become bolder and blend to create new color combinations. The various shades of oil green illuminate and determine the balance of color. They are combined with all the shades of gray, from pale to black. Weightlessness is the dominant characteristic: garments are airy, and constructed in impalpable nylons, fabrics have strong mat weave textures and structures that are reminiscent of patterns created in sand blown by the wind. FULL SUMMER A full-blown summer style is dominated by burnt tones of “terracotta” coupled with the purest white, and natural desert tones enriched with “tuareg blue” and ocher. The soft silhouette and natural fabrics contribute to the overriding sense of extreme sophistication and relaxation.

aul Smith looks to the ocean for spring/summer ’18 with a black and white campaign featuring Polish model Malgosia Bela and Ben Allen. The South of France was a key reference for the campaign, with neon signs, a seascape background and sandy beach
floors combining to create images that have the characteristic irreverent spirit that Paul Smith is known for.
Black and white imagery features in a Paul Smith campaign for the first time in many years. As a designer known for his
confident use of colour, the decision to present primarily black and white images, with an injection of colour to highlight key pieces, is both bold and modern.
Accents of colour are used sparingly throughout the campaign to highlight the Ocean print, which iscentral
to the theme of the collection. The print is a bright and optimistic
take on classic Hawaiian shirt motif and evokes a faded 1950s surfer theme, mixing a collage of vibrant florals, undersea coral
and Japanese koi carp. Key Ocean products that feature in the campaign include short-sleeved shirts and outerwear for men alongside dresses and trousers for women.

Further developing the aquatic theme, a graphic tuna fish motif, which features on men’s shirts and women’s bags, is inspired by Paul’s many visits to the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo. From this print, a tuna is recreated in neon signage to cap off a visually surprising and fun approach to the season.

Hugo Boss Spring Summer 2018 Summer of Ease

STYLE
Keep updated with the finest fashions and styles at passionsarabia.com Shot by acclaimed photographer Glen Luchford and created under the direction of Chief Brand Officer Ingo Wilts, the imagery is light, free and airy, evoking a sense of calm. This new campaign takes BOSS in a more relaxed direction than ever before, perfectly balancing ease and the elegance the house is known for. The setting is a clifftop house on a Greek island, the building’s clean architecture blending seamlessly with the vast sky and deep blue waters of the Aegean Sea. Sunlit and reduced in its color palette, this simple, stripped-back surrounding frames the ready-to-wear and accessories, which follow the relaxed mood. For menswear, signature BOSS tailoring is softened in both color, cut and cloth. Flintstone blues, sun-faded whites and
muted navy form the center of the palette, while relaxed doublebreasted tailoring is cut from paper-touch cotton and outerwear is loose and undone. Fresh leisurewear pieces are also brought into focus, with anoraks, shorts and open collar shirts ready for the day by the ocean. Womenswear presents beautiful soft-cut dresses in flowing plissĂŠ, subtly oversize outerwear and easy tailoring, at times lightly pulled in at the waist with nautical-inspired rope belts. Faces of the campaign, models Benjamin Eiden and Grace Elizabeth are captured in a natural manner, reclining in the shade and gazing towards the horizon, embodying the mood of the campaign. Just like this, the message this Spring/Summer is to sit back, relax and dream.

Fareed Abdal Art Between The Lines
F
areed Abal’s paintings much like his personality are multi-layered. An architect, artist, teacher and intellect - these are just some of the labels people attach to him. However, the one word, in our opinion, that would summarize this master creator would be ‘simplifier’. For his fourth solo show at Dar Al Funoon, Fareed Abdal presented a series of new works that contemplate the immense capacity of one’s mind to transform perceptions into reality. The new body of work explores a correlation between thought and form. Zahra Husain met with the artist
“The one thing that I have always attempted through my art is to simplify ideas. Art for me is a medium through which I present an alternate opinion to the public. I take a complex text and break it down into images and perceptions. So what might seem like a complicated religious text on war and victory on the surface, at its core may represent finding graciousness in defeat. This is what I want to bring to light, that what may seem, may not always be. I want people to find spirituality by questioning their beliefs,” said Fareed about finding his purpose through art. His latest collection, Figurative Calligraphy, explores the mind’s immense capacity to transform perceptions into reality, the correlation between thought and form. Each painting in the collection represents an intricate web of words, shapes and colours. Webs that get untangled on a closer look. Every stroke of the artist’s ink explores calligraphy, religion, and translation. Words and letters take the form of faces and figures, ideas are expressed hidden in ink, and although, they might seem strewn around recklessly on the canvas, they aren’t! Every little detail is placed there strategically by the artist. “The idea for this particular exhibition occurred to me while I was experimenting with calligraphy. As I was writing I was noticing silhouettes in the voids and spaces between letters... compositions between compositions, and so I began pursuing the figure,” said Fareed, while talking about the inception of his latest collection.
CULTURE
Over the last two decades as an artist, Fareed has endeavored to deconstruct and challenge society’s norms and ideas. His art is a catalyst for enriching conversations, be it about traditions, beliefs or even the ongoing disputes in our region surrounding the origins of our mythical and sacred history. Figurative Calligraphy explores the idea of duality through concepts like ‘Habeel’ and ‘Qabeel’ and ‘Ismael’ and ‘Israel’. Words are projected as solid forms, and experiencing the art is more like ‘reading in between the lines’. “Every piece of art from this exhibition makes me think of cultures that use masks to express psychological states and archetypical emotions. I like to think of this body of work as an exploration of some of the masks (and shadows) of our own culture... an inner and outer exploration of self vis-àvis society,” said Fareed. To him, true beauty lies in harmony. His relentless pursuit of art, aesthetic and beauty, is also about finding balance. Balance between what was said, what is written and how it will be received. Having received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture in 1980, followed by a Master’s Degree in Architecture in 1983 from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Fareed ran his own private practice under the name Fareed
Abdal Architects & Consultants. While art had always been a hobby, a form of meditation and relaxation for him, it wasn’t until the turn of the century that Abdal Fareed, began to explore his role in society as an artist. In his opinion art plays a very important role in reinstating cultural sensitivity to the Middle East. An idea, the acceptance of which, can go a long way in bringing peace and prosperity to the world around us. “The Arab world, once at the front of development and innovation, is today in derelict condition. The simplistic assumption that to be unified we must all be the same is limiting, and as constituents of this environment it is our duty to encourage diversity and its expressions through art, literature and performance before attempting to define that which binds us.” Highly personal yet universal concerns spur Abdal’s multi medium practice. Geographical, social, and spiritual motifs inform his body of work. For a viewer, Abdal Fareed’s paintings are not just a work of art, but a book of revelations. Every time one looks at his art, a different detail pops out, a story is revealed, an idea seeps through and throws light on a perspective that hasn’t yet been considered. In addition to being a consulting architect and practicing artist, Abdal Fareed is also on the faculty of the College of Architecture at Kuwait University.

Nirvana
T
by AGi Architects
here are no words to define the concept of Nirvana, a mental state with effects in the physical and spiritual planes. This makes it difficult to explain and only those who practice meditation can understand how far they are from reaching it. These thoughts led AGi Architects to name this project Nirvana. Words like “house”, “villa”, or “palace” fail to represent the scale of the building, its materialisation, or its spatial order. We prefer the term “home”. The features of a home are not physical, but rather emotional and affective, and Nirvana Home has been designed and built to satisfy the needs of the inhabitants in these terms. This home is also a reflection of the culture within which it is developed. Its point of contact with the location at ground level is a public floor dedicated to socialisation, for the gathering of family and friends. With this in mind, the spaces were designed to look at one another, detached from the surroundings and interconnected through a series of courtyards.
DESIGN
The international design firm AGi architects was founded by two architects educated at Harvard University, Joaquín PérezGoicoechea and Nasser B. Abulhasan. With a noticeable international character and a multidisciplinary focus, AGi architects offers a professional service emphasizing quality, creativity and exclusive design. distinctive and imaginative solutions.
The series of geometric voids in grey polished marble contrasts with the exterior’s white rough ceramic finish. The duality of textures is similar to that found in a marble quarry, where the polished geometric voids contrast with the natural mountain terrain. Inside Nirvana Home, little by little, step by step, the horizon and the sea begin to dominate and the building is marked by a formidable diagonal that displaces matter so as to reach maximum transparency, allowing rooms on different façades to look towards the sea. This strategy generates a string of empty spaces that become threedimensional courtyards holding gardens at different heights and acting as shared spaces for parents and children. The last floor of Nirvana Home is where the private spaces are found, for the exclusive use of the parents who, from this privileged position, are able to preside over the indoor activities of the home without losing sight of the sea and the horizon.

Figurative Calligraphy Fareed Abdal at Dar al Funoon
For his fourth solo show at Dar Al Funoon, Abdal presented a series of new works that contemplate the immense capacity of one’s mind to transform perceptions into reality. The new body of work explored a correlation between thought and form. The artist stated: “The idea for this exhibition occurred while experimenting with calligraphy, my usual medium. As I was writing I was noticing silhouettes in the voids and spaces between letters… compositions between compositions, and so I began pursuing the figure. Regarding the content of the writing, this is informed by ongoing disputes in our region surrounding the origins of our mythical and sacred history… or Abrahamic origins. I’m interested in dualities and tensions expressed in concepts such as ‘Habeel’ and ‘Qabeel’ and ‘Ismael’ and ‘Israel’, and how words are projected in one’s outward appearance. It makes me think of cultures that use masks to express psychological states and archetypical emotions. I like to think of this body of work as an exploration of some of the masks (and shadows) of our own culture… an inner and outer exploration of self vis-à-vis society.” Highly personal yet universal concerns spur Abdal’s multimedium practice. Geographical, social, and spiritual motifs inform his body of work, which encourages viewer participation outside the confines of complacent contemplation. Preoccupied with the human-nature relationship, Abdal meditates on the complexities among cultural beliefs, spirituality, and transience.
