FROM THE CHAIR

As my Board colleagues and I witnessed the success of the School’s centenary activities, it highlighted the incredible community we are so proud to serve and the important role we play in supporting the School to be the best it can be for current and future generations.

In 2023, one of the most significant tasks of the School Board was that of appointing a new Principal. After an extensive and rigorous search process we appointed Mr Andy Müller, who was the standout candidate and the best choice for Mentone Grammar. We look forward to working with him in the years ahead.

Also central to the Board’s role is to ask thoughtful and insightful questions, bring fresh perspectives to decision-making and to encourage reinvestment in our people, resources and facilities. Projects like the Creativity Centre and the Bayview Campus learning precinct, which is the most extensive building project ever approved by the Board, are great examples of our reinvestment for the future. We understand the disruption the Bayview build has caused, and we thank our community for its patience and understanding. At the time of writing, it is a delight to see the precinct open and providing a dynamic learning space for our Years 7 and 8 students.

Another important aspect of Board leadership is being open to feedback and the ongoing expansion of our knowledge of the School and the environment in which we operate. I regularly enjoy conversations with members of the School community to gain a better understanding of key issues. The Board Immersion Day in Term 3 provided the perfect opportunity for us to see the School in action and to hear directly from students about what’s important to them and potential areas for improvement. This was an invaluable experience for every Board member. I thank Principal, Mal

Cater, the Year 9 students who provided a wonderful lunch, our Year 11 student guides, and all those students and staff members we met throughout the day. What struck me most is how our ‘Happy, Healthy & High Achieving’ philosophy genuinely plays out across the School. I truly believe that Mentone Grammar is a place where every student can flourish, where they can explore new passions and interests, and where they are supported and encouraged by knowledgeable, caring staff to ultimately find their own definition of ‘Happy, Healthy & High Achieving’.

Our series of centenary events engaged over 3500 people. We welcomed alumni who have not had the opportunity to visit the School in 25 years, we had visitors from across Australia and around the world attend a variety of events and it was wonderful to see our students proudly wear their centenary pins, knowing that they are part of history and will be Mentonians for life. On behalf of the Board, I thank every staff member for the hard work and dedication they showed across every facet of the School. I thank our students for making us proud through all manner of endeavours, and the many parents, alumni and community friends who supported and engaged with us in 2023. Finally, I thank Mal Cater for his outstanding leadership now that he has finally hung up his gown. As we begin a new century with a new Principal, we can be proud of all that we have done and look forward with optimism to the next 100 years.

Mentone Grammar is fortunate to be served by a voluntary Board of professionals and business leaders who are committed to the advancement of education and passionate about the School.

04 Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2023

AN OUTSTANDING LEADER FOR AN OUTSTANDING SCHOOL

As a former student, teacher and Principal, it is impossible to do justice to the incredible contribution Mal Cater has made over his lifetime of dedicated service to the School.

When Mal began his tenure as Principal in late 2006, he inherited a school unsettled by the move to coeducation. He was tasked with preserving Mentone Grammar’s many traditions, whilst transforming it into a contemporary coeducational place of innovation and future thinking and, ultimately, restoring community faith in the School.

Working in partnership with the Board, Mal and my predecessors, Simon Appel OAM and later Geoff Ryan AM, began the development and implementation of four significant strategic phases that saw a new focus on Learning and Teaching excellence, an ambitious Master Plan to reinvigorate the entire campus, as well as extensive and balanced growth in student numbers.

Thanks to the hard work of Mal and the School’s dedicated staff, Mentone Grammar is now an employer of choice, it sits among the leading schools in the State for VCE and is the preferred

school for many families with a waitlist of over 3000 students, registered from now until 2036. We are fortunate to have a cohesive, passionate community that cares deeply about the success of the School, and most importantly believes in our commitment to develop ‘Happy, Healthy and High Achieving’ students.

As a Board, we honour Mal for his leadership over the past 17 years, and especially for his strong sense of duty in postponing his retirement, planned for 2020, to lead the School through the toughest of times.

Mal the Principal will be remembered for many things, including the positive way he engaged with students, always personable and with great humour. He made them feel special and known which in turn engendered genuine respect from students and parents alike.

From a Board perspective, it has been a pleasure to work with someone who has all the capabilities of a true ‘CEO’. He not only understood the changing needs of the School from an educational perspective; he understood the needs and priorities of running a multi-million-dollar business and the complex balance between managing growth and maintaining the core functions and values of the School. It was also Mal’s

vision and foresight that led the Board to support key projects over recent years that have had such a major impact on the School, including the Creativity Centre and the new Bayview Campus learning precinct.

I have no doubt Mal’s enduring legacy will be the way in which he has shaped, what is now, one of the State’s leading coeducational schools. I am grateful for the generous care and attention he took during 2023 to consolidate, prepare and ready the School for a new Principal in 2024.

To Mal, from the Board and every member of the Mentone Grammar community, we thank you.

Labore et Honore.

05 CELEBRATING OUR CENTENARY

Throughout our celebrations we honoured the many, many people who helped to shape Mentone Grammar and, somewhat poetically, we also farewelled our longserving and incredibly dedicated Principal, Mal Cater.

Together, our students and staff honoured these significant events with remarkable flair. I was particularly proud to be in the audience at the Palais Theatre for the Centenary Showcase in July. This event was a masterful feat of planning, countless hours of rehearsing, logistics and collective effort from students, staff and alumni, which culminated in an unforgettable show. This event set the standard for a full calendar of dance, drama and music productions that were each a testament to Mentone Grammar’s esteemed reputation in the performing arts. In amongst these highlights we saw students and staff push the bar higher across all campuses: in sport with premierships, high participation and new records, with outstanding academic achievements, and student engagement in School culture and cocurricular events.

Behind the scenes, our Executive Team continued to progress and, in some cases, complete Mentone Grammar’s 2020-2024 Strategic Plan. The six directives include:

■ Quality Teaching

■ Empowering Learners

■ Personal and Organisation Wellbeing

■ Digital Transformation

■ Celebrating our Centenary

■ The Next 100 Years.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

There is no doubt that 2023 was a momentous year for our School. We celebrated our 100-year milestone; marking the incredible journey of a small bayside school that was established in 1923 for local boys, to a leading coeducational independent school that welcomes students from near and far.

In support of these objectives and our growing student population, the School saw the development of its largest capital works project to date, the Bayview Campus learning precinct for Years 7 & 8. It is a magnificent space that has impacted positively upon the above directives.

In 2023, we also welcomed a new sports leadership team, to continue to cultivate excellence and engagement at all levels of sport within and beyond the Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria (AGSV/APS) program.

In November, the School proudly launched its new-look uniform, the Centenary Collection. The reimagined designs and range have been created to better suit a contemporary coeducational school for our new century.

Our growth in enrolments over the past years led to the establishment of two new Houses to our pastoral care structure to ensure that, as the School grows, we maintain the same level of individual care and connection that is imperative to the wellbeing of our students. Clark House was named in honour of the leadership and legacy left by former legendary Headmaster (1988-2004), Neville J. Clark MC OAM. Johnston House honours the School’s first full-time female member of staff and Acting Headmistress, Bessie Johnston (1936-1945).

A key feature of our Centenary year was that of our students’ voice. In learning and teaching, we created collegiate opportunities to ensure our students had increased and ongoing agency in their education. We also strengthened our student leadership program by doubling the number of Head Prefects from two to four. This better reflected the increasingly diverse nature of our School and ensured that these leading students had a meaningful impact in shaping the future of the School during their tenure.

Mentone Grammar is also well-known for its complementary leadership program – the Australian Army Cadet (AAC) program. This year, the School also celebrated the Unit’s 80-year milestone of developing confident, resilient young recruits with an array of impressive leadership qualities and exceptional outdoor skills. The Mentone Grammar Cadet Program remains as popular today and continues to be a formative, integral part of student life at Mentone.

As we celebrated and farewelled Principal, Mal Cater, we extended a warm welcome to incoming Principal, Andy Müller, who will lead the next chapter of our School’s great story. Andy is an experienced and respected educational leader, and we look forward to supporting him in this role.

Thank you to our community of families and Mentonians (alumni) for providing an incredible network of support for our students’ education, for attending our events and celebrations and for cultivating such a strong, caring and inclusive community.

... we extended a warm welcome to incoming Principal, Andy Müller, who will lead the next chapter of our School’s great story.

06 Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2023

THANK YOU, MAL FROM EVERYONE AT MENTONE GRAMMAR

On behalf of Mentone Grammar, I extend a heartfelt thank you to Principal, Malcolm ‘Mal’ Cater (Class of 1981) who concluded his 17 years of service as Principal of our School at the end of 2023. There was no more fitting way to honour his longstanding connection and extensive contribution than sharing his farewell with his beloved School’s Centenary year.

From joining the School as a Year 6 student in 1975 to being appointed as Principal at the end of 2006, Mal endeared himself to the community with his warmth, compassion and characteristic fun and good humour. He has been an incredibly strong leader, who persistently navigated the School through many years of continued success, as well as major changes such as: the transition to coeducation, the pandemic as well as an impressive campaign of capital works projects, just to name a few.

It was a pleasure to attend both the formal and less formal farewell events for Mal throughout the year. They were great moments of celebration and reflection for a tremendous life of service and dedication for a place that means so much to him and to us. His legacy will be indelible, and we are so grateful for the great School we have today, a result of his contemporary vision, hard work and bold leadership.

Thank you, Mal.

CELEBRATING OUR CENTENARY 07

FAREWELL TO MR CATER AWARDS CELEBRATION EVENING NOVEMBER 2023

STUDENT REFLECTIONS

Mr Cater has spent much of his life dedicated to Mentone Grammar, from the years he spent studying here as a student, to teaching for 11 years, serving as Deputy Headmaster, and as the Principal for the past 17 years. The lasting impact of his leadership is evident throughout the whole school, from the refurbishment and growth of the ELC, the increase of students and development of play spaces for Eblana, and the new buildings across all campuses.

Not only was Mr Cater involved in the physical enhancements of the School, but also the launch of programs such as the Year 8 International Learning Journey, the new Riviera Campus, the Greenways Café and the Vocational Major program in Frogmore.

As we gather to congratulate and award winners on their efforts throughout the year, it is perfectly fitting that we take a moment to reflect upon the extraordinary accomplishments of our retiring Principal and mentor, Mr Mal Cater. Over the course of his tenure, he has constantly dedicated his time, energy, and heart to this School, leaving a legacy that will inspire generations to come.

Mr Cater’s resilience and adaptability have been instrumental in ensuring the continued progress of our School. Enrolments have flourished under his guidance, a testament to the trust and confidence parents have in the educational experience offered at Mentone Grammar. The development of Shoreham Camp, including the new classroom and multipurpose space, reflects Mr Cater’s commitment to creating meaningful and enriching experiences beyond the classroom.

On the sporting front, the improvements to Keysborough Playing Fields, with resurfaced ovals, upgraded tennis courts and installed lighting, have provided our students with top-notch facilities to nurture their athletic talents.

One of Mr Cater’s passions, which he nurtured, is the Army Cadet program, as he made the effort to visit the annual camp at Puckapunyal every year, witnessing the growth in size of the unit despite it only being compulsory for Year 9s.

On a personal note, from myself and my brothers, Mr Cater has been an integral part of our education. Mr Cater’s mentorship, his advice and his eagerness to lend an ear and to always offer the time of day, no matter how busy he might be, is a testament to his selfless character. Beyond the materialistic developments of the School, Mentone Grammar will be forever grateful for the strong relationships and dynamics he has built throughout the School.

Thank you Mr Cater, for your unwavering belief in our academic and career goals and for your support as a great mentor.

SIOBHAN P YEAR 10 2023

08 Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2023

This is not a school with a focus only on academia, but rather a place where everyone feels that they are part of a community. Mr Cater has overseen the development of a school focused on a ‘Happy, Healthy and High Achieving’ policy. Mr Cater epitomises the seven School Values, always demonstrating these in his own interactions and in his commitment to ensuring positive student progress and development.

INTEGRITY RESPECT CARING RESILIENCE SERVICE DISCIPLINE ENDEAVOUR

Mr Cater has often referred to the School as a village that we all belong to, and perhaps the greatest strength of his tenure as Principal has been his ability to unite this village, bringing us all along for the ride and leaving no one behind.

To enhance the academic achievement of students at Mentone Grammar, Mr Cater has led the focus on student data tracking. This has greatly benefited academic standards within the School and led to an overall improvement in students’ VCE results. Additionally, Mr Cater strengthened student leadership within the School by introducing a studentcentred approach to voting and electing leaders. He has also been instrumental in refining the learning enrichment and learning enhancement structures, further serving individual student needs.

Like many leaders during the pandemic, Mr Cater had to swiftly reshape Mentone Grammar’s educational delivery and accessibility to an online platform.

At a time when many were feeling quite overwhelmed, Mr Cater provided a positive educational direction and a sense of calm in the chaos.

Mr Cater’s strong focus on Work Health Safety and the introduction of Risk and Compliance departments have created a safe and secure environment. Again, this is not merely to serve legislative requirements, but because student safety and wellbeing really matter to Mr Cater, at a fundamental level. So too, the expansion of counselling services within the School demonstrates Mr Cater’s

genuine commitment and investment in the wellbeing and welfare of everyone at the School. Mr Cater also extended and augmented the growing organisation chart to provide increased opportunities for staff.

Mr Cater has always valued the importance of keeping our School connected with the core Anglican values on which the School has been built. In keeping with his commitment to fostering global learners, Mr Cater oversaw the introduction of sequential Learning Journeys, which opened perspectives on how other cultures function.

Recently, with the introduction of two new Houses, Mr Cater continues to enhance the sporting and competitive potential of this School.

While it is sad to see such an inspiring career come to an end, we are all reminded personally of the unequivocal positive influence that Mr Cater has had on all of us. Our family has been closely connected to the School in various ways and we are all extremely grateful for the impact he has had.

Mr Cater, your career has embodied ‘Labore et Honore’. Go well and thank you Mr Cater.

CELEBRATING

100 YEARS

THANK YOU TO OUR WONDERFUL COMMUNITY FOR JOINING US IN THE MANY CELEBRATIONS AND FOR MAKING 2023 SUCH A MEMORABLE YEAR.

appreciate Mentone Grammar’s unique story.

Marking Founders’ Day on Friday 3 March 2023, the celebrations began with a Centenary Art Exhibition, an impressive gallery of community artworks and the much-awaited launch of the School’s coffee table book: The Changing Face of Mentone Grammar – 100 Great Stories.

The following Sunday many gathered to acknowledge the School’s Anglican history in a special church service led by current School Chaplains, Rev. Andrew Stewart and Rev. Michael Prabaharan in St Augustine’s Chapel. Off campus, our golfers enjoyed a perfect day on the green at Woodlands Golf Club.

On a massive ‘Welcome Back Weekend’, our sports community, old and new, enjoyed a return to Keysborough Playing Fields for a multi-sport exhibition between the School’s Firsts teams and alumni teams.

The weekend saw the return of countless alumni, from each of the generations, enjoy a magnificent reunion lunch on campus. After a long lunch, many enjoyed revisiting and touring the ever-changing school grounds and buildings.

The performing arts had their moment in a spectacular mid-year concert showcase of both current and past stars at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda. A surprise performance of the night included, Mal the Musical, an entertaining tribute to outgoing Principal, Mal Cater.

It was then with great glitz and glamour that the community enjoyed a night out at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre for the Centenary Gala Ball in August.

The festivities concluded with a relaxing family-friendly Centenary Family Picnic and Movie Night on a picturesque Frogmore Oval in November.

It was a wonderful year that saw over 3500 friends return to the School.

A NEW UNIFORM FOR A NEW CENTURY

The School’s Centenary in 2023 marked an exciting new era for our School – one defined by a contemporary and progressive coeducational model. As such, we took our distinctive School colours of navy blue, gold and white and recreated a suite of uniform items to best reflect changing student needs and community expectations.

We were excited to launch the Mentone Grammar Centenary Collection in November. Following many months of design, review and community feedback, award-winning Australian designer, Jonathan Ward, worked with our suppliers Noone and OnTrack Sportswear to reimagine the formal uniform and the core PE uniform.

The Centenary Collection delivers on three important considerations:

■ GENDER-NEUTRAL: students may select uniform items that best suit them regardless of gender. Different cuts and styles (e.g. tailored and relaxed) enable students to select items that best suit their own body type and personal preference.

■ ALL SEASON: our new wardrobe approach includes a range of flexible, layering options so students may wear items all year if they prefer, which also reduces the cost for families.

■ COMFORT: we have improved the fabrics, fit and texture of items so they are more practical and comfortable to wear.

By drawing on the inspiration of the past, and embracing the needs of today’s students, the Centenary Collection will continue to be quintessentially Mentone Grammar and a uniform all our students can wear with confidence and pride.

Research shows that students who dress professionally actually do better at school and that dressing smartly gives people a broader perspective. School uniforms also plays a key role in promoting pride, self-confidence, and a feeling of belonging within the School community, contributing to that sense of inclusion and positive wellbeing.

Maintaining standards around appearance is not about squashing individuality, it is about creating boundaries as well as equity, safety and practicality for the School environment.

OUR NEW BAYVIEW LEARNING PRECINCT OPENS!

AMONGST THE CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE BAYVIEW CAMPUS LEARNING PRECINCT WAS EXCITING TO WATCH. THE UNIQUE BUILD, ABOVE AND BELOW THE GROUND IS (AT THE TIME OF WRITING) NOW COMPLETE AND HAS EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS OF OUR YEARS 7 & 8 STAFF AND STUDENTS.

14 Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2023

THE BAYVIEW CAMPUS LEARNING PRECINCT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST BUILDING PROJECT TO DATE. THE DEVELOPMENT NOW ENABLES THE SCHOOL TO SIMULTANEOUSLY EXPAND ITS FACILITIES TO MEET GROWING DEMAND, WHILE ALSO CREATING SMALLER AND MORE INTIMATE SPACES FOR THE STUDENTS TO FEEL AT HOME.

The building primarily accommodates our Bayview students (Years 7 & 8). However, the design includes shared resources to benefit all students, including:

■ tech advanced classrooms

■ comfortable learning lounges, meeting pods and breakout spaces

■ a landscaped rooftop social space

■ a well-equipped science laboratory

■ Multipurpose synthetic sports field

■ a Bayview Administration Centre

■ a landscaped Bayview Quad and Wellness Island

■ a spacious multipurpose gym and presentation space

■ beautiful changeroom areas.

A key deliverable of the project was to ease local traffic flow for the School’s wider community. This has been achieved with an additional kiss-and-go drive-through area along with a considerable staff carpark hidden beneath a large versatile sporting field.

The main building, undercroft and landscaping were completed during Term 2, 2024. At the time of writing, there is additional works continuing along Naples Road to add significantly more play space and a secure bicycle compound.

The School Executive extends its sincere thanks to the community for its patience as it navigated this momentous build. Special thanks go to the School’s Property and Maintenance team and to the construction team for their tireless efforts in overcoming adverse weather conditions and unavoidable challenges to see that our Bayview students can enjoy their magnificent new home for generations to come.

15 CELEBRATING OUR CENTENARY

STAFF

IN 2023, 333 STAFF MEMBERS CONTRIBUTED TO AND ACTIVELY SUPPORTED MENTONE GRAMMAR’S RANGE OF EDUCATIONAL, WELLBEING AND OPERATIONAL PROGRAMS AND ACHIEVEMENTS DURING THE SCHOOL’S CENTENARY YEAR.

STAFF PROFILE

The School employed 231 academic staff members, 37 academic support staff and 65 operations staff.

Mentone Grammar staff comprised:

■ 69% teaching staff

■ 12% teaching support staff

■ 19% operations staff.

In 2023, no staff members, who identify as Indigenous, worked at the School.

In 2023, 33% of the academic staff worked part-time. This enabled staff the opportunity to blend their professional and family responsibilities. For other staff, working part-time enabled them to assist with the care of their parents, return to work after extended leave or facilitate specific transition to retirement plans. This created some job-share opportunities.

The Mentone Grammar 2023 Staff Register comprised 71% female and 29% male staff members with the gender composition varying between the different campuses, year levels, faculties and operational departments.

STAFF ATTENDANCE & RETENTION

There were 186 academic days in the 2023 school year with academic staff attending an amount commensurate to their full-time or part-time fraction. In total, academic staff were absent for an average of four days in 2023. Absences included Personal Leave that included Sick and Carer’s Leave and Moving Days, as required. Extended Personal Leave, Bereavement and Compassionate Leave were also approved in 2023. Long Service Leave is not considered an absence, but rather planned leave, therefore it has not been included in the calculations.

Long Service Leave may be taken by long-term staff members after 7.5 years of service to our School community.

The turnover rate of academic staff in 2023 was 18.92%, which equates to an 81.08% retention rate.

ACADEMIC STAFF QUALIFICATIONS

All teachers at Mentone Grammar are registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). A full register of Teaching staff and their qualifications are listed as an addendum to this Community Report. Annually, staff are invited to advise of any additional formal qualifications they have successfully completed since commencing at the School. Formal qualifications of all staff members are also listed annually in our School yearbook, The Mentonian

Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2023 16

SUPERVISING PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS

Mentone Grammar reinvigorated its program of hosting and supervising Pre-Service Teachers in 2022. In 2023 a Teacher Development specialist position was created to induct and mentor all new teaching staff and pre-service teachers at Mentone Grammar. The Pre-Service program is an opportunity for our teachers to give back and enrich the education sector by guiding, coaching and shadowing the next generation of teachers. We recognise the reciprocal benefits, that learning runs both ways from the teacher to the pre-service teacher and vice versa, as the emerging teachers expose our teachers to new methodologies, research and technologies. Hosting university students also provides the School with the opportunity to identify high quality Graduates for future vacancies. In 2023, Mentone Grammar hosted 24 pre-service teachers from Victorian Tertiary Institutions including the University of Melbourne, Monash University, Deakin University and Swinburne University.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

Professional Learning continued to be available for all staff, both academic and operational, in 2023. Teaching staff at the School participated in regular Teacher Learning Communities with a focus on their pedagogical practice, alongside regular professional learning within their Faculties, and this was complemented by access to a range of external Professional Learning opportunities that addressed their specific goals and learning priorities. Staff were encouraged to identify and attend targeted professional learning in line with the strategic direction of the School.

The School invested $247,441.97 in professional learning for staff in 2023, which equated to an average of $743.06 per staff member.

WELLBEING

CONNECTION AND COMMUNITY

OUR CENTENARY YEAR WAS A REMARKABLE TIME TO REFLECT UPON THE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS MADE WITHIN OUR SCHOOL’S STUDENT WELLBEING PROGRAM AND IN BUILDING STRONG CONNECTIONS WITHIN ITS COMMUNITY.

A pivotal aspect of Mentone Grammar’s approach to wellbeing is its emphasis on building connections between students, families, teachers, colleagues, the community and the School Board. This interconnectedness creates a nurturing environment where every student feels known, cared for and supported in their personal and academic endeavours.

One of the School’s programs that exemplifies this commitment is the Mentor system. This program is designed to build strong, personal relationships between students and mentors, who provide guidance and support throughout a student’s journey at Mentone Grammar. These relationships go beyond academics; they foster a sense of belonging and provide a safe space for students to openly discuss their views and aspirations.

In a changing world, where young people face a multitude of challenges, Mentone Grammar is proactive in addressing these issues. Students participate in an engaging and supportive Mentor program that explores contemporary issues. These programs equip students with essential life skills, enhance their emotional intelligence, and prepare them for personal and academic achievement.

The RULER Program from Yale University is well embedded in our Mentor program introduced in the ELC, until Year 8. The RULER approach continues to focus on developing emotional intelligence and language and building positive relationships whilst enhancing student and staff wellbeing.

The Holistic Wellbeing Program includes a focus on building respectful relationships and connections, cybersafety, child safety, study skills, team building and other classroom interventions, such as teaching vital social skills, teamwork, and the art of building friendships.

The School also partners with external specialist providers:

■ Mental health and Mindset (Nic Newling, the Champions and Think, Set, Go)

■ Career pathways and study skills (Darren Pereira)

■ Drug and alcohol information and education (Paul Dillon and the Smashed Program)

■ Responsible behaviour and safety (Paul Cronin Foundation, RYDA road safety, Road to Zero and Spinchat)

■ Cybersafety (Project Rockit and the Cybersafety Project)

■ Respectful relations (SEED and the Stride Program).

While programs and initiatives are crucial, Mentone Grammar goes further by continually fostering a sense of community and inclusivity. Events like lunchtime board games, Harmony Day, Indigenous Celebration Day, R U OK? Day, Pride Month, International Women’s Day, family events and various House events serve to strengthen bonds among students, families, and staff.

In addition to its strong wellbeing focus, the School also offers extraordinary opportunities for leadership and personal growth through activities such as the Army Cadet program and cocurricular activities such as camps and community-based activities. These experiences include beach walks, rock climbing, outdoor adventures, interschool sports competitions, Learning Journeys, cultural immersions, incursions and skill development sessions and interstate adventures. Qualities of independence, cooperation, teamwork, cultural awareness, kindness, and support are instilled when we provide a comprehensive wellbeing and community focused program.

We continue to have access to extensive information and resources about relevant topics (mental health, cybersafety, school survival, healthy body, positive parenting,

and other special reports) impacting parents and students at: https://mentonegrammar.schooltv.me/

As we reflect on our 100-year history, we are proud of our enduring commitment to student wellbeing and community building. In a world that is constantly evolving, our School remains steadfast in its dedication to equipping students with the skills and support they need to thrive, both personally and academically.

Thank you to our caring therapy dogs, Lenny and Scout, who have provided unconditional care and support to our students and staff. Thank you to the Mentone Grammar community for its ongoing support, resilience, care, and kindness shared throughout 2023.

CHILD SAFETY AT MENTONE GRAMMAR

DURING 2023, THE SCHOOL BOARD AND EXECUTIVE CONTINUED TO UPDATE AND RATIFY THE SCHOOL’S CHILD SAFETY POLICY, TO ENSURE THE SCHOOL CONTINUED ITS ‘ZERO TOLERANCE’ COMMITMENT TO PROTECTING ITS STUDENTS FROM ALL ASPECTS OF HARM.

Along with the School’s Values of Caring, Respect, Integrity, Endeavour, Service, Discipline and Resilience, the latest Child Safety Policy is guided by a number of overarching principles that drive the development and regular review of strategies, practices, policies and procedures to uphold our commitment to protect students from all forms of harm. They are:

■ All students at the School have a right to be safe and to feel safe.

■ The welfare and the best interests of the School’s students are paramount.

■ The views of students and a student’s privacy must be respected.

■ Clear expectations for appropriate behaviour by staff with students must be established, including in the Student Safety Staff Code of Conduct.

■ The safety of students is dependent upon the existence of a student safe culture.

■ Student safety awareness is embodied, promoted and openly discussed within our School community.

■ Families can participate in decisions affecting their child and they, and the School community, are engaged and informed about the School’s operations and governance.

■ Procedures are in place to screen all staff and external education providers who engage in student-connected work (whether occurring on the School grounds or at a location connected to the School).

■ Student safety is everyone’s responsibility.

■ Specific responsibilities in respect of student safety as outlined in the Student Safety Responsibilities document.

■ Annual student safety training is mandatory for all members of the Board, the Principal, staff and anyone else otherwise engaged by the School in relation to student-connected work.

■ Procedures for reporting and responding to alleged or suspected incidents of child abuse or reportable conduct (including the complaints process and supports available) are clearly communicated and accessible for all members of the School community. This includes students and otherwise, members of the school community, who must have access to information and support in a reader friendly, accessible, culturally safe and age-appropriate manner.

■ Students from culturally or linguistically diverse backgrounds should receive special care and support.

■ Students who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander should receive special care and support.

■ Students with a disability should receive special care and support.

■ Staff have regard for a student’s diverse circumstances and needs, so that they can provide support and respond to those who are vulnerable and to ensure equity is upheld in policy and practice.

■ Staff working with students will be suitable and supported to ensure student safety and wellbeing values are reflected in the School environment.

■ Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of students in relation to visitors to the School, including third parties contracted to provide services either directly or indirectly to or for students.

TECHNOLOGIES

OUR CENTENARY YEAR OF 2023 SAW MENTONE GRAMMAR BUILD ON SOME OF ITS ESTABLISHED DIGITAL SYSTEMS WHILST ALSO JUMPING ON THE WAVE OF AI (ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE) AND THE EVER-INCREASING VARIETY OF PLATFORMS INCORPORATING THIS SIGNIFICANT CHANGE.

Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2023 22

AI – MICROSOFT BING CHAT AND COPILOT

In alignment with the Australian Framework for Generative Artificial Intelligence in Schools, Mentone Grammar seeks to support our community in undertaking the ‘safe, ethical and responsible use of generative AI to support better school outcomes.’ We aspire to harness the potential of AI in learning and teaching, while managing the risks of the technology. Our mantra throughout is that AI should be used to enhance, not replace staff responsibility. In keeping with this imperative, guidelines were outlined and shared with staff, both teaching and administrative, to assist them in navigating what can be a challenging and ever-changing landscape.

Working parties were formed, to continually explore how staff can utilise these powerful AI systems. Beyond 2023, guidance will be offered to students about acceptable use of AI and how they can get the most from AI. Microsoft Copilot will be the focus for students as a reliable and safe AI option.

CANVAS

Canvas was launched as the School’s Learning Management System (LMS) at the beginning of 2023. Andrew Dobbyn joined us as our Digital Learning & Innovation Technical Specialist and was integral in training staff and helping them build and deliver curriculum in an effective manner. As teachers become more comfortable with the platform, they will continue to create courses that draw on a range of digital systems, to help build interactive and engaging content. As Canvas can be continually improved, year on year, the sky’s the limit for what can be achieved beyond 2023.

TECH NINJAS

At our School, we are proud to have a group of students who are passionate about technology and eager to help others with their IT needs. They are the Tech Ninjas, a student-led IT support team that provides assistance to students and staff across the School. Whether it is troubleshooting a device, setting up software, or teaching a new skill, the Tech Ninjas are always ready to lend a hand and share their expertise. They also assist students in their class and whole year levels with various IT projects and tasks, such as creating presentations, videos, digital updates and NAPLAN preparation. The Tech Ninjas are not only a valuable resource for our School community, but also a great example of leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving. We commend them for their initiative, dedication, and enthusiasm.

BAYVIEW BUILDING TECHNOLOGY

Prior to the opening of a new Bayview Campus learning precinct, a test space was setup in the senior school to train staff on the plethora of exciting technology available in every classroom in the new building. Now (at the time of writing), each space is active as a Teams Room, where staff can record content and portions of lessons from their devices. Audio is now enhanced with FrontRow microphones and speakers and classes can be connected in a range of different ways. Teachers and students now have a number of ways to share and collaborate from their own devices or by using the Samsung touch screens. It has been exciting to see the benefits this latest technology has brought to our Bayview students.

27 CELEBRATING OUR CENTENARY

APPLIED LEARNING & THE VCE-VOCATIONAL MAJOR

IN 2023 THE SCHOOL INTRODUCED A NEW SENIOR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE – THE VCE-VOCATIONAL MAJOR (VM). THE VCE-VM CERTIFICATE MEANS THAT ALL STUDENTS WHO UNDERTAKE YEARS 11 & 12 CAN NOW COMPLETE A VICTORIAN CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION (VCE), CREATING BROADER OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNING PROGRAMS THAT MATCH INDIVIDUAL SKILLS AND INTERESTS.

VCE-VM STUDENTS UNDERTAKE VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN SCHOOLS (VET) WHICH IS USUALLY COMPLETED VIA A TAFE, ALONG WITH STRUCTURED WORKPLACE LEARNING (SWL), WHERE STUDENTS DEVELOP ADVANCED TECHNICAL AND EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS IN THEIR CHOSEN INDUSTRY.

In 2023, many VCE and VCE-VM students were enrolled in a range of VET certificates, including Allied Health Assistance, Building and Construction, Automotive, Early Childhood Education, Equine Studies, Engineering, Community Services, Beauty, and Events, to name a few. Students learnt from industry experts and had access to advanced technologies in their industries, giving them industry experience and a hands-on approach to their learning. Staff enjoyed the opportunity to visit students onsite at TAFE, with a highlight being treated to a fabulous three-course meal at Angliss restaurant, prepared by our commercial cookery students.

Students also immersed themselves in The GLOBE project, that explores cultural values within organisational practices, conceptions of leadership and the economic competitiveness of societies etc. It allowed our Year 11 students to apply their knowledge and skills in real-life learning contexts, to further understand the notion of ‘community’ at a local, national and global level. A highlight of The GLOBE project was the Fiji Book Drive, in which students demonstrated exceptional teamwork and initiative to sort and categorise over 50,000 books to be shipped to Fiji, to brighten the lives and educational outcomes of more than 6,000 children.

On campus, students devised a successful ‘celebration day’ for our Year 12 VCE-VM cohort, going through the process of excursion proposals and risk assessments. They also developed a Mentone Tour, sharing highlights of their local community while operating as tour guides. On their Great Ocean Getaway camp, students extended this skill to developing a weekend away for a designated client, developing an itinerary within a specified budget and creating a client package to promote the tour. As part of the itinerary, they had to consider different United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the impact their selected activities, accommodation and transport options would have. On this camp they also considered issues of economic, environmental, and social sustainability of this regional community, especially looking at the impacts of COVID lockdowns and bushfires.

Our Year 12 VCE-VM students prepared for life beyond school, creating Linked In profiles, business cards and video resumes for their personal branding task in their ‘Adulting 101’ project. Students presented their ‘assets’ to a member of the Mentone Grammar marketing team who gave them valuable feedback about their presentations and tips on how to enhance their interview techniques. Students also developed a five-year plan

28 Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2023

which they discussed with the Careers Counsellor and produced a quality portfolio of their education, achievements and work journey, which they presented to the School Executive Team at the end of the year.

It is always a joyful experience to see and hear how much these students have grown from the opportunities they embraced in their time at School and the self-belief and confidence they possess as they leave the School.

Ever since I joined the school in ELC, I have always felt respected, supported and encouraged in everything I did, whether that be partaking in the performing arts, applying for leadership positions or trying to start a sustainability club. I have so many amazing memories and I’ve met some of my best friends over these last fifteen years. Overall, I’m just so grateful to have been given the privilege to spend most of my life here, and I know that no matter where I go in the future, I’ll always have a place at Mentone Grammar.

KEIRA PATRON

As the fourth Riley to go through Mentone, I am forever grateful to be, not only, a lifer, but a Mentonian. Mentone Grammar is all I’ve known in life, where I came to grow as a kid, and where I formed the foundations of the person I am today - a true home away from home. As I leave my home this year, I leave with unrivalled experiences and friendships. Thank you to everyone who made this journey so special for me, my teachers and mates that I hold so dear. Words do not do justice the impact this school, and the community that surrounds it, has had on me. I wish, and know, that it will continue to do so for generations to come.

PATRICK RILEY

I tumbled into the ELC in kindergarten thinking I had forever in front of me, and now, fifteen years later, I wish I could slow time down…… thanks Mentone, I’ll always carry you with me.

STUDENT ACADEMIC PROGRESSION

LEVERAGING EDUCATION DATA AND ANALYTICS

AT

MENTONE GRAMMAR, WE UTILISE OUR ANALYTICS PLATFORMS FOR MEASURING AND SUPPORTING STUDENT PROGRESS THROUGH THE AGGREGATION AND ANALYSIS OF INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT DATA.

Providing insight on student outcomes through data-based visualisations, our data aggregation and reporting systems inform our Learning and Teaching approach and aid in tailoring customised instructional strategies for individual learners.

The Student Performance System (SPS) serves as a resource for parents, offering an in-depth view of their child’s current Learning Profile for students in Year 5 and above. This includes Learning Behaviour reporting, academic progress for all subjects and teacher feedback on individual assessments. The SPS is updated nightly, ensuring that stakeholders have access to the most upto-date student data, fostering constructive and forward-looking conversations between our staff, parents, and students.

Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2023 32

EDUCATIONAL TESTING

Each year, students in Years 4, 6, 8, and 10 participate in Education Skills Profile Testing (ESPT) administered externally.

These tests evaluate reasoning abilities (verbal and non-verbal), mathematical skills, reading comprehension, spelling, and written expression. Scores are measured on a Stanine scale, ranging from 1 to 9, with 9 indicating very high performance relative to Victorian students of the same age, and 1 indicating low performance.

The results are shared with parents and are particularly informative for our teaching staff. They also help identify students for participation in our Enrichment or Learning Enhancement Programs. We are committed to providing ongoing support to help all students achieve their full potential.

The chart below presents the average Stanine values for each tested area among our 2023 Years 4, 6, 8, and 10 cohorts, alongside the State benchmark. We conduct a comprehensive analysis of individual performance, growth, and trend data to identify contributing factors and formulate strategic action plans based on the outcomes.

NAPLAN AT MENTONE GRAMMAR

Student achievement in NAPLAN is now evaluated against four proficiency levels, replacing the previous numerical NAPLAN bands and national minimum standards:

■ Exceeding: the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.

■ Strong: the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.

■ Developing: the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.

■ Needs additional support: the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes that are expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.

Our School has consistently achieved positive results in NAPLAN and in 2023 our students’ achievement levels are well above the Australian averages, as demonstrated in the chart below. LEAD SCHOOL EFFECTIVENESS SURVEYS

CONDUCTED BY INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS VICTORIA (ISV), THE LEAD SCHOOL EFFECTIVENESS SURVEYS PROVIDE INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS WITH A BENCHMARK FOR THEIR EFFECTIVENESS AND INSIGHTS INTO HOW THEY ARE PERCEIVED BY THEIR STUDENTS, FAMILIES, AND SCHOOL COMMUNITY.

Since 2010, we have participated in the ISV LEAD School Effectiveness Surveys. This data is utilised throughout the School as an important measure of our community achievements and informs our ongoing improvement strategies. Analysing the results longitudinally helps us identify trends and evaluate the effectiveness of our initiatives.

41 CELEBRATING OUR CENTENARY

ABOUT OUR FACILITIES

IN 2023 THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY WITNESSED THE RAPID PROGRESS OF AN IMPRESSIVE REBUILD OF THE BAYVIEW CAMPUS. THIS BUILD WILL FURTHER ENHANCE THE OVERALL BALANCE OF THE SCHOOL BY INCORPORATING THE LATEST IN CONTEMPORARY LEARNING SPACES.

Mentone Grammar is structured into six distinct age and stage campuses on one site.

The School’s campuses begin with a vibrant Early Learning Centre, that leads into the Eblana Junior Campus, together, catering for mixed classes from 3YO Kinder to Year 4. They are connected by inviting ‘discovery’ gardens.

In 2021, the School added a specialised campus for Years 5 & 6 students, named Riviera. Its amphitheatre, learning hubs and green room are all popular features.

Close by, the Bayview (Years 7 & 8) Campus, now completed, features additional flexible and specialist learning spaces.

These campuses have all been designed with a creative balance of quality learning spaces, communal hubs and play spaces. Within the Senior area of the School, the Greenways Campus is home to Year 9 students exclusively and offers a studentrun café, casual break out areas and private gardens. Built on the site of the former Thorold Hall, the Centre maintains many features of the original space but with a contemporary twist.

The Frogmore Campus for Years 10 to 12 students is complete with contemporary facilities for visual and performing arts, technologies, food studies, sports, languages, a specialist environmental and science wing, a Year 12 private study and a large library with extensive communal study areas.

The grounds surrounding all six campuses provide generous play and sports options, along with many shaded seating areas.

Mentone Grammar also owns 17 hectares of Playing Fields at Keysborough, providing curated facilities for the School’s busy sports program including tennis, hockey, touch football, rugby, soccer, football and cricket. As spacious parkland,

it is also ideal as an outdoor learning environment for the School’s cocurricular activities such as Cadets and for junior excursions.

The School also owns a much-loved beachside camp at Shoreham. The Shoreham site operates as an ‘extended classroom’ for experiential learning programs that include the marine environment, conservation and exploration and places of local geographical and historical significance.

Mentone Grammar is committed to ongoing improvement of all facilities and grounds with respect to maintaining and planning for a safe and sustainable future.

SHANE WARNE OVAL

- A DEDICATION

On a rainswept morning in February 2023, it was an honour to posthumously name the School’s main match oval at our Keysborough Playing Fields in memory of this true legend. The unseasonable weather certainly did not dampen the spirit of the heartfelt occasion and the club rooms were packed to the rafters.

Principal Mal Cater welcomed Shane’s family, father Keith, two of his children Brooke and Jackson and brother, Jason (Class of 1989), along with School cricket teammates, coaches, friends, and members of Mentone Grammar and Camberwell Grammar’s First XIs to share stories and morning tea before Brooke and Jackson Warne officially unveiled the new Shane Warne Oval sign.

The gathering was treated to beautiful tributes from Shane’s father Keith, close friends and School teammates Wayne Fuller (Class of 1988) and Ravi Krishnan (Class of 1985), School cricket coach Barrie Irons, and Principal Mal Cater whose speeches all shared a common theme: Shane was generous, well-mannered, he had time for everybody, and he just wanted to win!

The School extends its sincere thanks to the Warne family and all who attended for making this such a memorable day and we are proud to report that our First XI was triumphant in their tight battle against Camberwell (Mentone 6/220 defeated Camberwell 9/203) to cap off a wonderful tribute.

JOHN PEERS TENNIS CENTRE

On a sunny morning, the Principal Mal Cater and Mentone Grammar’s Director of Sport, Brenton Sanderson, welcomed guests including John and his family, former Firsts players and coaches, special friends, students and families of the current Girls’ Firsts Tennis teams from both Mentone Grammar and Haileybury.

In 2001, as a Year 7 student, John was quickly recognised for his exceptional tennis skills and was immediately selected for the Mentone Grammar Firsts Tennis team. For the next six years, the Firsts teams went on to win five AGSV Tennis premierships. John then went on to find success on the professional tennis circuit with over 30 Doubles titles, including grand slam victories in the 2017 Australian Open Men’s Doubles and the 2022 US Open Mixed Doubles. He has also been a successful member of the Australian Davis Cup Doubles team for many years and was incredibly proud to win a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 with Mixed Doubles partner, Ash Barty. John was gracious as ever in his response to the School’s tribute, recognising his cousin Troy as an inspiration in his early tennis career at School and his gratitude towards being looked after by the senior boys on the team, as well as the honour he felt in having the facilities named after him all these years later.

Ella R, the 2023 Girls’ Firsts Tennis Captain, summed it up beautifully in her speech, recognising John as an absolute legend of the sport and an ongoing inspiration to all Mentone Grammar tennis players.

AS ONE OF THE FINAL CELEBRATIONS OF OUR CENTENARY YEAR, ON SATURDAY 18 NOVEMBER THE SCHOOL WAS DELIGHTED TO NAME ITS KEYSBOROUGH PLAYING FIELDS TENNIS FACILITIES AFTER OUTSTANDING MENTONIAN AND AUSTRALIAN TENNIS ICON, JOHN PEERS (CLASS OF 2006).

45 CELEBRATING OUR CENTENARY

AS PART OF THE SCHOOL’S CENTENARY COMMEMORATIONS, THREE BESPOKE SCULPTURES WERE CREATED AND PRESENTED TO THE COMMUNITY IN OCTOBER 2023.

The unveiling of each installation was connected to the launch of the School’s annual Art and Design Shows and added to the unique legacy of art curations around the campus.

The sculptures all celebrate creativity and commemorate the centenary year. They were created by gifted artists, Andre Sardone, Ben Fasham (Class of 1994) and Cameron Moorhouse (Class of 2016).

Each sculpture tells a different story but with a common theme of evolution, growth and change.

THE ART OF STORYTELLING

MEGA POD ARTIST: ANDRE SARDONE

On the lawn by the front driveway of the School there now sits an artistic sculpture, a pod, which is made from rusted metal. This has been crafted by Bendigo artist, Andre Sardone.

Seed pods have evolved to thrive in different environments and are crucial for the survival and reproduction of many species. This piece reflects upon the interconnectedness of our world and the constant process of growth and change.

ANDRE SARDONE

46 Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2023

A STORY OF ONE’S VOYAGE ARTIST: CAMERON MOORHOUSE (CLASS OF 2016)

Now, anchored pride of place beside the Frogmore oval, is a boat crafted by Mentonian, Cameron Moorhouse. Inside the boat are etchings that signify Cameron’s journey through the School. It was designed as an interactive artwork which, if students wish, they can sit in and contemplate their own journey.

Forever changing yet always recognisable; it is here that the foundations of your character, skill and scholar will be forged. Like navigating a river, steer your ship as you so choose and take whatever opportunities that come your way for your time here will one day come to an end.

EVOLVING ‘THE FLAG POLE’ ARTIST: BEN FASHAM (CLASS OF 1994)

Replacing the original flagpole on Venice Street, Ben’s 7.2 metre sculpture represents a student’s journey through the School. The three crescents signify this journey from being a young person to a graduate. The stainless-steel sphere is the artist’s signature.

The spike represents what we aspire to achieve and how the School and School community shape the student’s future. The three main shapes represent the Preschool, Junior School and Senior School. The sphere represents the core values of the School being respect, caring, resilience, service, discipline, endeavour and integrity.

The School thanks the artists for their spectacular contributions, together with our Parents & Friends group for their very generous support of this project.

54 Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2023

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Mentone Grammar has a vibrant and welcoming community of parents, Mentonians (alumni), friends and partners who provide an extended network of support for our students and our School.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES

The Mentone Grammar School Foundation Limited gratefully accepts donations or bequests. Tax deductible gifts can be made to the School via the Foundation Building Fund.

You can also become part of Mentone Grammar’s rich history by sponsoring a tax deductible named seat within the impressive Thorold Theatre created in perpetuity for the life of the building.

We are also delighted to work with community members on any customised giving opportunities or major gifts. For more information: mentonegrammar.net/community/giving-opportunities

COMMUNITY GROUPS

We are fortunate to have two wonderful volunteer organisations associated with the School that offer a number of ways you can get involved.
