The 4th drupa Global Trends tracks key economic and market developments across the global printing industry. Printers in all regions, except the Middle East, reported growing levels of capital investment. Functional and packaging printers were more confident of rising investment levels than those in publishing and commercial sectors. For the first time, investment in finishing is the top priority, closely followed by print technology. However there is greater investment in prepress/workflow/ MIS as printers begin to realise the need for greater automation.

Kodak expands global markets for process free plates Sonora UV process free plates are now available in Asia, ANZ, Middle East, and Europe

Kodak’s Sonora UV process free plate, the latest addition to the company’s process-free technology portfolio, is now available in many regions of the world. Sonora UV is based on technology used in the Sonora XJ process free plate that has been commercially available in Japan since 2016. In the pressroom, Sonora plates, like the flagship XP version work with existing press setups and sequences. They are capable of running on

sheetfed, heatset web, and commercial coldset presses and can run applications such as commercial print, newspapers, offset packaging, and UV. According to Kodak, Sonora UV plates expand the capability of Kodak’s process free plate portfolio to an even wider group of print service providers. They are capable of delivering longer run lengths for UV print applications than any other process free plate – up to

30,000 impressions. This allows printers to take advantage of both the environmental and economic benefits of process free plates and the expanded set of opportunities associated with UV technology, including flexibility, high print quality, and faster drying times. For packaging printers, Sonora UV plates can meet the demands of UV print applications increasingly used by today's packaging and commercial printers. Richard Rindo, GM worldwide offset print and VP print systems division, Kodak, said, “Kodak invests in R&D that advances the capabilities of print service providers and equips them to offer a wider range of applications and tackle new markets while accomplishing all that in the most environmentally way possible. Over 3,000 customers around the world are yielding significant cost and environmental benefits from Sonora and with Kodak manufacturing facilities now located in the USA, Europe, Japan and China, printers across the globe benefit from faster supply, support and customer service.”

KBA increases focus on packaging printing for revenue growth The company is building a new demo centre for digital and flexo presses at its Würzburg headquarters for customers from emerging markets

Claus Bolza-Schünemann

Koenig & Bauer (KBA) has laid the foundations for a new digital and flexographic press demo centre at the company’s Würzburg parent plant. With a usable area of around 2,100 m², modernised premises of 21,164 m³ and investment totalling € 6 million (including technical infrastructure; without demo presses) the project is the latest in a series of new buildings at the Würzburg site, following a new logistics centre and design building in 2001, two new production halls in 2003 and 2008 and a new foundry in 2012. The KBA Group is concentrating on growth sectors like packaging, digital and industrial functional printing. 70% of the group’s new press revenue is generated in the booming packaging sector. The group headquarters in Würzburg was chosen as the site for the new demo centre to provide suitable, conveniently situated presentation facilities with easy access to Frankfurt International Airport for customers from expanding markets

As counterpart to the demo centre for sheet offset presses and processing systems at Radebeul in Saxony, the new demo centre in Main-Franconia will feature a RotaJET digital printing press for commercial, publication and decor printing, a flexo rotary press from KBA-Digital & Web Würzburg’s Italian subsidiary KBA-Flexotecnica cooperating on flexible packaging, and a newly developed sheetfed flexo press from KBA-Digital & Web for direct printing on corrugated cardboard. The centre is due to be ready for occupancy in autumn 2017. Aside from customer demos, testing new developments is also planned.

Claus Bolza-Schünemann, charmain, KBA, said, “KBA-Digital & Web builds the world’s largest inkjet roll-fed rotary presses and in future also high performance sheetfed presses to meet the growing demand for corrugated cardboard packaging. We want to present our systems for the above growth sectors live in action at the new demo centre. Many of our national and international customers want to see the presses being operated in action before they decide to invest. And of course, we hope that this substantial investment will have a positive impact on our business in these new markets for KBA.”

Titanium Dioxide shortage leads to higher prices of printing inks TiO2 is a white pigment which is irreplaceable for the formulation of white inks and coatings due to its high opacity

The printing industry has been observing a substantial increase of Titanium dioxide (TiO2) prices for the last 18 months, mainly driven by reduced production capacities in Asia as well as recent mergers substantially reshaping the TiO2 market. On top of this, a fire incident – declared as force majeure – occurred in January 2017 and forced one of the largest TiO2 manufacturers to stop its production. The affected site in Pori, Finland, normally accounts for a considerable amount of the global

TiO2 ink grade capacity which now is shut down creating an immense supply shortage. The supplier is committed to repairing the site as quickly as possible but the duration of the production stoppage is still unpredictable. Going forward, serious supply shortages throughout 2017 can be expected. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a white pigment that is irreplaceable for the formulation of white inks and coatings due to its high opacity. Especially in flexible packaging, the performance of a white ink is key

for a high-quality print result. That’s why the current TiO2 supply shortage has substantial impact on the printing ink industry. Siegwerk, an international supplier of printing inks for packaging applications and labels, will increase the prices for all of its inks containing titanium dioxide (TiO2) effective April 1st. This price increase is caused by steadily rising raw material costs due to a serious supply shortage of TiO2. Hugo Noordhoek Hegt, President EMEA at Siegwerk, said, “We have been working intensively to maintain a continuous supply of titanium dioxide through our own global supply network. Thus, we have secured the supply for our current customers. We will work closely with them to determine the individual best solutions by evaluating the use of alternative titanium dioxide grades or products of different qualities. However, the persisting supply shortage has led to substantial cost increases and therefore also forces us to adjust the prices of all of our inks containing titanium dioxide.”

Flint Group to increase prices of its packaging, narrow web and sheetfed products

ME‌Printer April 2017

Prices will increase between 4% – 7%, globally, effective April 3rd 2017

12

Flint Group is introducing a global price increase for its packaging, narrow web and sheetfed customers due to highly volatile raw material markets and an uncertain macrolevel landscape. The Flint Group packaging, narrow web & sheetfed division confirmed price increases of between 4% – 7%, effective April 3rd 2017. On 22nd February, Flint Group announced price increases and a variable surcharge due to the supply constraints and price infla-

tion seen in the global Titanium Dioxide (Ti02) market. The security of supply for many ink-related raw materials has recently worsened (in addition to the Ti02 crisis), thus expediting a further general price increase announcement to cover the rising cost landscape. Doug Aldred, president of the packaging, narrow web & sheetfed division, said, “The increases will vary by product group and our business managers will be in con-

tact with their customers to discuss the details. Flint Group is working to mitigate the costs of these dramatic increases in raw materials being passed to our customers by investigating alternative sources of supply and committing capital to efficiency projects. However, in such volatile conditions the Group has no option but to review the sustainability of current pricing models and adjust accordingly.”

Scan speeds of 240 mm per second and parallel processing of tasks also help accelerate workflow and both models feature the industry’s only user-replaceable process cartridges which means projects won’t get derailed by downtime. All controls are managed at the front by a clear 8.5” color touch screen panel which gives rapid access to frequently used menus with the improvement of the user interface. A new Print Data Converter fixes typical problems such as speckles, slants or the kind of errors sometimes seen with scan data or file converter data. OKI has retained the legacy Teriostar features such as the photoconductor drum which is actually a cartridge that can be replaced by the user. Enhanced Teriostation2

integrated software, which is standard on both models, delivers complete network access to the copier and enables users to send jobs including multiple files to the printer from anywhere on the network using most common file formats TIFF, PDF and more. New security features include identification with smart card for print, copy and scan. This prevents unauthorised use, the risk of leaving sensitive drawings uncollected, eliminates waste and controls job logs. These new models also enable the complete deletion of data on the hard disk drive (HDD) if the printer is sold or, if leased, or returned to owner. Mathias Militzer, vice president META region, OKI, is bullish about growth in theMiddle East and Africa region, as OKI plans to increase its investments into new markets and double its business in 2–3 years. “The Middle East and Africa is now one of the biggest markets in the world for OKI’s office printers. In addition to their ease of use, maintenance and total cost of ownership, OKI’s LED

printers have the advantage of operating with fewer parts which significantly decreases their failure rates,” said Mathias. OKI is also diversifying into wide format and industrial printing.“ The response to our new products in this region has been remarkable, particularly from traditional offset printers making their entry into digital printing with small investments. Furthermore, a growing number of SMEs providing marketing and advertising services is investing in OKI printers to handle their various short-run printing jobs for their clients. Simultaneously, the marketing departments of bigger companies are choosing to handle their printing jobs in-house due to the affordability and versatility of OKI printers. In order to help such companies solve their challenges, we offer the additional options of renting and leasing printers for those who do not wish to buy them. Our focus is to increase our market share in all these categories with a target of achieving 50% of our revenue from these new businesses in the next few years,” he added.

Interpack 2017 preview Heidelberg’s ‘Zero Defect Packaging’solution

Heidelberg and its Swiss subsidiary Gallus will present solutions for defect-free, industrialized folding carton

and label production, under the motto ‘Smart Print Shop – Zero Defect Packaging’. The joint participation of the two companies will focus on the challenges of defect-free packaging production from the point of view of brand companies. Heidelberg is responding to the demand for serial or even customized packaging and labels with the Primefire 106, the first digital printing system in B1 format for industrialized printing applications, presented at drupa as well as the Gallus Labelfire 340 for digital label production. The integrated Prinect Packaging workflow developed by Heidelberg plays a central role here, by laying the foundations for industrialized production. It enables automation of the workflows – from order acceptance, through structural design, prepress, and press through to postpress – and facilitates intelligent communication between the areas in order to prevent defects. The Primefire 106 features Perfect Stack technology

for automatically removing incorrectly printed sheets from the process and immediately and correctly reprinting them. Integrated barcodes and QR codes or even serial numbers can also be added to all sheets for complete traceability. The Gallus Labelfire label printing system also provides the option of individually identifying entire packages or even the individual label. Inspection systems can be used to register locations in packages with missing labels as well as incorrectly printed or damaged labels so they can be corrected in downstream systems by removing or reprinting them. Gallus will also be presenting its new process, ‘Metallic Doming’. It can be used to produce raised textures with metallic luster on plastic substrates using rotary screen printing. The result is a haptic sensation that could previously only be produced using hot-foil embossing on paper substrates. Effects of this type are now also possible on tube laminates as well as PP and PE substrates.

Leibinger’s industrial inkjet printers and monitoring system Paul Leibinger will exhibit its continuous inkjet printers for high-contrast marking of packaging made from materials such as cardboard, plastic, shrink wrap, foam, glass or metal. These can be used to print on flat, concave, convex and structured or rough surfaces. The inkjet coders print fixed or variable data without contact, during ongoing production and with fast-drying inks. The printing allows the application of simple text, serial numbers, best before dates, various fonts,

logos, all common barcodes and DataMatrix codes as well as PPN codes. Leibinger will present models from its JET3up and JET2neo printer series for the packaging industry. The JET3up PRO features protection class IP65 for package marking and coding for food in a wet or dusty production environment. The JET3up PI enables marking and coding of dark packages with white or light inks. The JET3up Rapidoffers high-speed production up to 1000 m/min.

EyeC’s inspection systems for folding cartons EyeC will showcase in-line inspection technology for the 100% examination of folding cartons and luxury packaging as well as inspection solutions with the off-line inspection from midsized samplings. EyeC will show the EyeC ProofRunner Carton Pre-Feeder in action on the folder gluer from Kohmann. With this flexible inspection system, carton manufacturers can use the latest technologies directly in their existing processes without replacing their existing folder gluers. The module can be connected to any folder gluer. The inspection system checks the print quality of text, graphics, colors, foil stamping, as well as 1-D and 2-D codes on the entire carton surface. Defective boxes are ejected via the ejection device of the folder gluer before the production is delivered to the customer.

For high-value materials such as complex luxury folding cartons, EyeC offers the EyeC ProofRunner Carton HiLight: the system inspects the special combination of hot foil and blind embossing. EyeC will demonstrate the use of this inspection system on the PrintChecker sorting unit from Kohmann. The in-line system is also offered as a pre-feeder module or a retrofit module. In addition, EyeC will present the EyeC Proofiler 1200 DT. The new flatbed scanner is capable of

scanning documents in size up to 1270×915 mm and checking them against an approved PDF file in just one inspection run. The EyeC Proofiler 1200 DT is useful in the case of printing sheets, thin leaflets or flexible packaging. Besides the inspection of graphics and texts in all languages, the EyeC Proofiler 1200 DT offers other options such as checking colors, 1-D and 2-D codes or Braille. The EyeC Proofiler 400 DT facilitates the individual inspection of cartons or labels.

Business strategy

“BOPP films are preferred for its lower cost, versatility and environmental friendliness S. Satish, global head – sales and marketing, Cosmo Films, talks to ME Printer about the global packaging trends driving demand for BOPP films and the Middle East export market lamination and labeling applications in this market. Our focus is to further grow our speciality films sales in this market though increased engagement with brands, flexible packaging converters and channel partners. What are the future applications and growth markets for BOPP Films? The packaging industry is constantly looking for solutions in the areas of enhanced shelf life of the product and sustainability. BOPP films have a huge potential to fulfill these unmet needs of the industry. Future growth for BOPP is expected to come as more and more brands replace heterogeneous laminate structures (mostly involving PET and PE), with a BOPP-BOPP homogeneous laminate structure for easy recyclability. Another major area of growth would be BOPP based high barrier films to replace Alu Foils and other complicated laminate structures. With many brands upgrading to high speed machines in quest of improved productivity, high speed packaging applications also provides BOPP films an opportunity for growth. Similarly the transition from fin sealing to lap sealing also offers BOPP films a huge growth opportunity in some markets.

How big is the Middle East export market for Cosmo Films? What are your best selling products in this region and for what applications? 22

The Middle East export market is the 3rd largest market for us, after US and Europe. We sell a comprehensive range of speciality and commodity films for packaging,

What are the global packaging trends driving demand for your products? The packaging sector is in a constant state of flux as brands are engaging with customers like never before. Packaging is

playing a pivotal role in helping brands differentiate their product offerings. Growth in packaged foods markets around the world will continue to be a key driver for future demand underpinned by population growth, urbanisation and rising incomes in developing markets. We would like to state that BOPP films are a preferred option owing to its lower cost, versatility as well as environmental friendliness. Some of the trends driving the demands of our products are:

certificates etc. Outdoors: Tree tags, train station & airport signages& displays etc. We have now upgraded our Synthetic Paper for universal printability (compatibility with any printing technology) because of which not only does it’s versatility further increase, but it also helps in reducing the inventory carrying cost for the printer We are expecting exponential growth in Synthetic Paper in all the markets that we are present in.

• Need for enhanced shelf life requirements for food packaging • Need for high speed packaging for improved productivity • Need for light weight packaging to reduce cost and waste • Need for recyclable laminate structures due to concern for environment • Need for enhanced packaging finishes for differentiated shelf appeal • Need for better aesthetics and longevity in labelling applications • Shift from wet to thermal lamination for better results and concern for environment • Shift from paper to synthetic paper for longevity and also to protect the environment by reducing deforestation

Will you continue to be entirely invested in BOPP technology? How are you positioned to compete with other global manufacturers with regard to product innovation, distribution, and pricing?

Product Innovation: We believe in leading through innovation. It starts from an unmet customer need. As step one, we try and understand customer’s unmet needs and then customize our innovation efforts to fulfil that need. This is how we create product differentiation and carve specialties for it in each segment. Some of the innovations (which are nothing but simplified solutions to the next set of challenges that industry faces) in the speciality segment that we can think of are as follows: • The development of DTP (Direct Thermal Printable) films is an innovative step in the sense that it completely eliminates the need for the ink ribbon in thermal printing and also offers 100 percent moisture resistant alternative for information labeling requiring variable printing. • ‘Low Noise’ adhesive tape films which are specially designed to avoid the noise coming from peeling off the tape at the time of packing cartons etc

Distribution: We serve customers in more than 80 countries across the world from our 5 plants in India, Korea and US. We have warehousing facilities in India, Korea, Japan, Europe, Canada and US. While 60% of our sales comes from direct customers, we also have an extensive channel partner network in almost every major country across the world who stock our products regularly and service the local market. The customers are supported by more than 60 salespersons working out of sales offices in India, China, Japan, Korea, Europe and US Pricing: We are one of the largest manufactures of BOPP films in the world. This gives us the leverage to get the best prices for all types of raw materials. The significant difference between S Asia raw material price index as compared to other markets like Europe and US, and our ability to get the best freight rates through strategic carrier partners, enables us to be competitive in most of the markets that we serve. The preferential trade agreements between the countries where we have manufacturing facilities and the destination country, also often offers us an edge in terms of pricing. We believe in value based pricing for our speciality range and have seldom faced any major pricing challenge for the same.

ME‌Printer April 2017

What are your growth projections for synthetic paper? Synthetic paper is an exciting and versatile product. It can be used as a substitute for paper in any application that requires durability, longevity, non-tearability, moisture resistance or chemical resistance. This includes areas such as commercial printing, tags & labels, retail & packaging, identification & credentials and outdoors. Some of the applications under each of these segments are as follows: Commercial printing: Maps, calendars, posters, recipe books, instruction manuals etc. Tags & Labels: Chemical drum labels, airport transfer tags, track & trace labels etc. Retail & Packaging Segment: POP graphics, carry bags etc. Identification & credentials: visiting cards, land documents,

We are among the Top 10 BOPP films manufacturers in the world and our vision is to become the most preferred global brand offering value added BOPP films. We keep pace with the market with regard to product innovation, distribution and pricing:

• Ultra High Barrier films to replace Alu foils • High Hot Tack and Low SIT (as low as 75degC) barrier films to enable high speed packaging and enhanced shelf life of the product • BOPP films with heat sealing compatibility with PE for lap sealing applications • Universal printable Synthetic paper for replacing paper in applications requiring non tearability, moisture resistance and longevity such as maps, children books, id cards, certificates etc • Easy peel Lidding films which also offer good seal integrity • Black Velvet Lamination Films to offer an intense black colour along with a velvet touch to the laminated paper/paperboard or package, for enhanced aesthetics

drupa

th

Global Trends report 2017 Printers in all regions, except the Middle East, reported growing levels of capital investment The 4th drupa Global Trends report authored by drupa organiser Messe Düsseldorf and partners Printfuture (UK) and Wissler & Partner (Switzerland) tracks key economic and market developments across the global printing industry. The survey conducted in October 2016 had nearly 1200 participants with a good cross section from all the main market sectors and regions: 839 printers participated and whilst the majority were from Europe (525), the rest of the world was represented in all regions (314). Given the relatively smaller number of suppliers, responses were received from 331 of which 220 were from Europe. Two years ago, the drupa team was able to report an almost universally positive picture from both printers and suppliers re-

porting on their own companies’ economic health, described as the ‘drupa barometers of economic confidence’. Last year the picture was more variable between the regions, with some doing well, and others, struggling. It is a similar picture in 2016; however, the variances are even larger.

The economic situation of printers and suppliers

In global terms, 42% of printersdescribed their business as in a ‘good’ economic state, whilst 11% described it as ‘poor’, a positive net balance of 31% (this net balance is indicated in the charts below). The forecast for next year is somewhat more optimistic

than the reality the following year, whilst in some cases the difference is striking, for example, in Africa, which reported a net decline in confidence, the first time for any region since this report series started in 2013. With regard to end market sectors, functional and packaging printers globally are more confident than commercial printers who are in turn more confident that publishing printers, a pattern that has been present since 2013. However that global summary masks significant variations at the regional level. Publishing printers in Africa and Asia were more confident than those in commercial print and it was the reverse of that in Australia/Oceania and the Middle East. In general it is a similar positive story for suppliers, with 56% reporting their company in a ‘good’ economic condition and just 6% stating it was in a ‘poor’ state, a positive net balance of 50% - the same as last year. Curiously the regional variations are less than last year. Perhaps amongst both printers and suppliers in general, a more cautious (and perhaps more realistic) outlook is emerging. The economic summary in the main report indicates there is good cause for that caution. The printers’ and suppliers’ own more detailed financial performance figures support this more conservative view. Printers globally report continuing falls

in prices which are compensated for by increasing utilisation and hence raising overall revenues at a cost of falling margins.

Financial performance

Studying the data both by region and by market sector, the picture is more complicated; for example, South/Central America and Africa reported net positive price increases whilst the Middle East reported severe price and margin falls. Similarly whilst publishing printers in North America show falls in revenues, prices and utilization, in South/ Central America and Africa, rises were reported in all three measures. Despite the general squeeze on margins, employee numbers continue to rise globally with a +9% net balance, ranging between +21% North America and 0% South/Central America and Australia/Oceania. Whilst production employee numbers increase globally +9%, there is a small decline -2% in administration employee numbers. In the more developed regions, employees in publishing printers are falling sharply;for example, -21% in North America. Globally for suppliers the pattern is similar with revenues up 17% but prices down -24% and margins down -27% (nevertheless, this is the least negative, net balance in three years). Again the picture is patchy regionally with the Middle East and South/ Central America struggling. One might expect that global and regional financial market conditions would affect printers and suppliers alike. Not so. Globally, printers reported better financial conditions this year on all measures (except average debtor days where they, like suppliers, reported a worsening picture). Suppliers globally reported a worsening situation on all measures, with terms getting worse particularly in South/Central America, Africa and the Middle East (printers agree with suppliers in these regions). Printing is a very diverse industry when it comes to the print technologies used. Fourteen out of sixteen technologies listed scored a 10% or above penetration in at least one of the market

sectors. Overall digital toner cutsheet colour presses led by a wide margin in terms of the positive net balance of print volumes in 2016 at +25% followed by digital inkjet rollfed colour at +11%. The picture is more complex when you drill down into the market sectors, where for example there is 8% growth overall in sheetfed offset largely due to the packaging and publishing markets, and an 8% growth overall in flexo due to the packaging and functional

printing markets. Past trends in the production mix of conventional print continued this year with ever-shorter run lengths, ever-shorter lead times and an ever-increasing number of jobs. However, there was a major surprise in the apparent irreversible transition to digital print; as for the first year there was a small but distinct reduction in the proportion of turnover that was digitally printed. Considering market sectors, digital print is

Trends

clearly having the greatest impact in functional markets followed by commercial, then publishing, and then only modestly to date in packaging. Disappointingly, the proportion by value of digital print that is variable refuses to rise. In 2013, 19% of the printers then using digital print reported that more than 25% of their digital print was variable, while the figure for 2016 is 18%. As variable data is the major added value component of digital printing, this is an alarming trend. Another striking figure this year was the clear fall in the proportion of printers who reported they have a web to print/storefront installation. After several years of steady

increase, this year, there was a significant fall – down 3% globally. Not all regions fell but some were decisive; for example,in North America, it fell 25%.

Capital expenditure

Printers in all regions, except the Middle East, reported growing levels of capital investment. Functional and packaging printers were more confident of rising investment levels than those in publishing and commercial sectors. For the first time, investment in finishing is the top priority, closely followed by print technology. However there is greater investment in prepress/workflow/ MIS as printers begin to realise

the need for greater automation. As for plans for investment in print technology, sheetfed offset has knocked digital toner cutsheet colour off its overall top place, with digital inkjet cutsheet colour growing rapidly to take equal third place alongside flexo. For the first time in this report’s history, since 2013, there is a different market leader in each market sector with digital toner cutsheet colour in commercial, sheetfed offset in publishing, flexo in packaging and digital inkjet rollfed colour in functional. Suppliers’ capital investment plans remain strong globally with most regions forecasting a net increase. The exceptions are those regions struggling in performance terms; for example, in South/Central America and the Middle East. By far the most popular investment type is the development of fresh sales channels (46%),and also research and development. The least popular type of investment is up to its best level yet at 20%. Suppliers will spend more next year on marketing and whilst trade shows and product training remain the most popular uses of that budget, online content and education is almost the fastest growing customer support tool. Strategically both printers and suppliers agreed the biggest constraints to growth were a lack of demand creating strong competition. While investigating into the causes of the lack of sales, printers agreed that finding new customers was the most difficult, whilst for suppliers it was competitive pricing. As to how best to drive improved profitability, printers put their faith in a combination of reduced staffing/ improved productivity and new print technology whilst suppliers will rely on new products and new sales channels.

Market specific trends

Commercial printers facing the impact of digital communications have been encouraged to find new revenue streams with fresh added value services. With four years of data now available it must be reported there is no evidence of any such growth, with the notable exception of wide format print up from 37% in 2013 to 50% in 2016.

communications. Printers report sustained improvements in revenues to offset reductions in pricing and margins and strong capital investment plans. Whilst for suppliers, improving revenues and margins coupled again with strong investment plans show a positive future. The good news is not universal; while functional and packaging print are in an expansion mode, publishing print is in a more defensive mode with commercial print somewhere in-between. In regional terms, the Middle East has chronic problems undermining performance, and Africa and South/Central America remain fragile. All print companies must continue to adapt and meet the market challenges head on. This will mean a ruthless approach to efficiency and automation while at the same time learning new skills and developing new added value services. Nevertheless it is pleasing to report that overall, print has got its ‘mojo’ back. The full version of this report is available to purchase online at http://shop-md.suttermedia.de/ en/Reports/ North America leads the way in adding new services, but even in that region, there is some evidence of a fall in the range of services offered. Multi-channel or cross media services are still a minority application (18% globally), although again North America is well ahead (38%). Publishing printers are having the hardest time in adjusting to digital media as evidenced throughout the report. An increasing number of titles have online editions with the consequent reduction in circulation, although the number of titles lost to online-only editions remains very low. Other means of creating added value such as personalisation, versioning and variable content are growing but slowly (once again North America showing the way). Yet relatively few publishing printers are adding fresh added value services beyond the historic prepress, design and storage/ fulfilment options. Packaging printers have seen a relatively small impact of digital

media to date at least and remain generally confident across all regions. On the other hand, the level of adoption of added value SKUs remains modest in most cases, with interactive features the most common to be adopted. It is clear that digital print is starting to have a real impact (32% offer it globally), most commonly for labels but with flexibles and folding cartons following and some signs for corrugated. For Functional printers the outlook remains very positive, with those in this market sector putting ever more resources behind it as they enjoy good growth rates in most applications. Inkjet is the dominant print technology for most applications (up from 61% in 2014 to 74% in 2016).

Conclusion

Following the successful drupa 2016, this survey has provided the statistical support that shows print is recovering from the double hit of the global recession and the impact of digital

The first day of the Hunkeler Innovationdays demonstrated both growth and enrichment of the biennial event. The sunny and relatively warm day with Alpine snowclad peaks all around helped as the event opened

with a press conference of the Hunkeler group. The press was addressed by Stefan Hunkeler, his brother Michel, who was inducted into the company about a year ago, and by their father Franz Hunkeler, who said, “I am proud

of my two sons.” As the company heads towards its centennial in 2022, when Franz Hunkeler will be 75, Stefan helmsoperations as the chairman and Michel as the managing director. Michel spoke about the complex-

ity and challenges faced by printers inproviding format-flexible, error-free, intelligent and secure documents. He pointed out that cooperation amongst technology and equipment manufacturers is key as complex tasks require even more specialized and expert knowledge and integration. The cooperation with Muller Martiniand Horizon was demonstrated at Innovationdays with still more unique and advanced binding solutions—an example of the complex integration projects that are coming. For instance, in the Hunkeler book productionline, the unglued book blocks are picked up by a Hunkeler line andhanded over to a Muller Martini perfect binder that is specially designed to accept these. Two observations emerge from what Hunkeler product manager Hans Gutsaid at the press conference and also during the guided tour he conducted to highlight some of the main features of the company’s products at the exhibition. The first is that digital color production is for many applications; it is not about just speed but quality. It seems that speeds of 80 to 180 mare really where the highest and most stable color quality is emerging inwebfed digital printing. The second isGut’s observation on the use of primers and coating that enable substrates to be printed by digital presses andparticularly inkjet digital presses. Hesaid, “By using various coatings and primers, the press manufacturers are focussing mainly on printability. However, sometimes these coatings and primers make paper processing and finishing more difficult and we need to sensitize the industry to retainand develop the finishability as well.” I had several interesting interactions with Xeikon, Kodak,Canon, Fujifilm and Ricoh at the show. There were many new presses on display, including those from Canon and HP. Fujifilm showed a technology demonstration of a webfed press printed with thesame Samba head as in its successfulJetpress 720.

Launch of new Océ ProStream as an alternative to offset

ME‌Printer April 2017

Print output of the Canon ProStream inkjet press

Canon presented three digital production presses including the first public showing of the new Océ ProStream continuous feed color inkjet press. Designed to offer highest quality and extended media choice for high-volume commercial print work, the ProStream ran to roll-to-roll at on a range of stock for printingdirect mail, books, catalogues, and brochures. Canon also demonstrated its flagship sheetfed digital presses –the imagePress C10000VP drum and toner press and the Océ VarioPrinti300 inkjet press. The new ProStream that was actually announced three days earlier at the Oce Poing facility in Germany, is 80 metres a minute press with a 1200 dpi resolutionachieved with a new Piezo headthat actually has 1200 nozzles perinch. The press is squarely aimed at offset quality with droplet sizes of2 and 5.6 picolitres and uses a new polymer based ink developed and manufactured by Océ. There is a new flotation air dryer and the press is capable of laying down a lot of ink with coverage as

high as 100% in any one color and up to 350% in a combination of four colors. Canon claims that the ProStream is able to exceed the Fogra51 and Fogra 52 gamuts on coated and uncoated substrates respectively. The ProStream incorporates

Canon’s ColorGrip paper conditioning technology, ensuring optimal print quality on standard coated and uncoated offset papers from 60 to 160 gsm. With a printing width of 540 mm and maximum print speed of 80 metres per minute, the ProStream offers best-in-class productivity of up to 35 million A4 pages per month. The non-contact flotation drying technology minimises physical stresses on the paper and leaves the printed image untouched until dry, enabling dense ink coverage for vibrant color reproduction. Christian Unterberger, chiefmarketing officer and executive vice president, production printing products at Océ said, “With this new press, customers can now confidently migrate high-value work from offset to inkjet. This will enable PSPs and brand owners to exploit the full creative potential of variable data printing to elevate print’s effectiveness within data led multi-channel campaigns.” Demonstrated at HunkelerInnovationdays producing directmail items, calendars, photo booksand brochures, the press will be commercially available from summer 2017.

Ricoh again showcased the Ricoh Pro VC60000 thatit had shown two years ago at the same event and also at drupa 2016. It ran the inkjet CMYK duplex inkjet press at high speed in roll-to-roll and roll-to-cut with dynamic perforation supported by Hunkeler and Horizon systems. While at the last Hunkeler show Ricoh demonstrated inline preprint and postprint coating stations on untreated and offset papers, at the just concluded show the company stuck to smoother inkjet primed stocks. Shown alongside thePro VC 60000 inkjet press at the show was a Ricoh Pro C9100 color cutsheet digital production press. A broad range of pre-print edsamples were available, such as perfect bound books as well as posters, postcards, loyalty cards and statements, and direct mail applications. Print samples also showed the excellent results using a fifth clear varnish coating station. Ricoh showed its software such as its digital book printing solution with Ricoh’s TotalFlow Batchbuilder and Ricoh’s ProcessDirector 3.5. Heidelberg, together with Müller Martini and Polar, demonstrated a range of finishing solutions for print shops and book binders. The Heidelberg Stahlfolder was incorporated in several finishing lines at the show including the live demonstration of quick changeovers with signatures being fed inline to the DigitalPresto II saddle stitcher from Müller Martini. On display at the Müller Martini stand were the integrated Heidelberg Stahlfolder TH 56buckle plate folder, the Polar D56programmable guillotine with an extremely compact footprint and the Polar BC330 3-side trimmer. The Stahlfolder TH 56 can be used separately as a standalone folding machine and can be quickly and seamlessly

integrated into inline production solutions with the saddlestitcher, increasing flexibility, utilization and guaranteeing a good return on investment. Polar also showed an interesting and highly compact version of its Digicut laser cutting machine for the precise cutting of complex shapes and outlines from digitally printed single sheets. In addition, there was a jointpresentation of the Müller Martini Connex data management system and Heidelberg’s Prinect workflow showing the benefits of both inlin eintegration and automation pointing to Heidelberg’s concept of the ‘SmartPrint Shop.’ While Heidelberg does not yet have a high-speed webfed inkjet solution except its GallusLabelfire UV inkjet press, there was a technology demonstration of a webfed solution at the Fujifilm stand at Hunkeler showing the same Samba inkjet heads that Heidelberg uses in the Labelfire press as well as in its B1sheetfed Primefire inkjet press.

Strong interest for Horizon’s dynamic book production modules According to Michel Hunkeler, this year’s Innovationdaysevent signaled a new level of openness and cooperation with leading manufacturers such as Horizon and Muller Martini. The implication is that this new level oftechnical exchange and agreementhas meant better integration of the paper finishing modules with the binding and end-process modules of these manufacturers. Smart binding systems, designed to handle consecutive productive production of single books with varying format and pagination, is one area where this integration is paying off even in India. Horizon showed a fairly elaborate smart binding system similar to what they showed at drupa 2016, including the BQ 480 perfect binder which is now shipping. A newer version of theBQ480 4-clamp perfect binder with more powerful

stepping motors that improve its milling, sizing, pressing and creasing capabilities was shown at Hunkeler Innovationdays. Horizon’s Indian representative Om Prakash HR explained that while the leading Indian digital bookprinters cannot always go in for the entire automated system at one time, they are keen to have smart binding systems for the dynamic production of single copies and short runs. In one case, a leading book printer who saw a similar solution at Horizon’s stand at drupa has been able to implement the solution in the pastyear, by only buying some of the essential modules and leaving out a couple to save costs. World Wrap Masters winning design to come to life with speedboat wrap Elsewhere on the show floor will be the return of the World Wrap Masters Series, where the best wrappers from around the world will showcase their skills to compete to win the title of World Wrap Master. On Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 May, the competition will see 36 wrappers battle it out to be crowned European Wrap Master 2017. The winner and runner-up will then go on to participate in the final, taking place on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 May, where they will be joined by regional and national winners from past Wrap Masters events. Patrick Charrier of Bazoom Studio, France, has won FESPA’s recent World Wrap Masters Design Competition. The winning design will be applied, by the world’s best

vinyl installers, to a speedboat used by the HaugaardRacing Team in the 2017 World Formula 4 UIM Powerboat Championship. In order to qualify, participants were required to produce an attentiongrabbing design demonstrating their creative skills. Prerequisites for the design included the boat number (22), the racing team’s logo and World Wrap Masters sponsor, Hexis’ logo. Patrick’s design will be printed and installed during the World Wrap Masters Final, taking place at FESPA 2017 in Hamburg. Patrick Charrier said: “The inspiration for my design came from the Danish Drakkar (aka Viking longboat). The general idea was to give an impression of movement to the boat, even when it’s at a standstill. Blue and white are the top colours for a boat – lots of white

for the pontoons to contrast with the surface of the water. The gradated honeycomb patterns evoke the composite materials used to construct the boat. The stars are included to reference the pilot, the tightrope walker in his cockpit, as well as a nod to shooting stars and speed on water.” The winning design was chosen by the driver of the raceboat Sebastian Haugaard Trads, and the World Wrap Masters Series head judge, Ole Solskin Ravn. Sebastian commented on the winning design: “Bazoom Studio’s design is unique and personal, incorporating beautiful flow lines and colours. We have not yet seen similar designs in the racing community and are confident this design will differentiate us in the field. We look forward to meeting Patrick at FESPA 2017 and seeing his design come to life. The

boat not only looks good on paper, but due to the bright colours will look amazing on the water.” Visitors to FESPA 2017 will be able to see the boat being wrapped with Patrick’s design during the live final on the 10thand 11th May 2017.

Increased focus on LED and textile printing at SGI Dubai 2018 The 21st edition of the show will be held on 14–16 January at DWTC

ME‌Printer April 2017

SGI Dubai 2018 will feature an expanded area for LED signage and textile printing under the themes ‘SGI LED 2018’ and ‘SGI Textile 2018’. ‘SGI LED 2018’ will feature LED solutions for both outdoor and indoor deployment. ‘SGI Textile 2018’ will focus on technologies and products for textile printing and its markets. Sharif Rahman, CEO, International Expo Consults, organizers of SGI Dubai, said, “We are expanding these two segments – LED and textile printing – to equip businesses to boost their manufacturing capabilities and market opportunities. LED installations were perceived to be expensive for a long time, but that impression is slowly changing as advancement in LED technology has made it possible for LED signage installations to function well in this region’s hot weather conditions. Furthermore, sustainability initiatives and government support are increasing the widespread adoption of LED products across every industry. Similarly, there’s a growing industry in the Middle East for printed textiles, particularly, in the fashion and retail industries.”
